Here is a powerpoint presentation for my AS Media Coursework showing my research into two radio stations, Heart FM and BBC Radio 5 Live and Sports Extra
3. History of Heart
• First began broadcasting on the 6th of september 1994.
• It’s the UK third independent regional radio station.
• The first song to be played on heart was “Something got me started” by
simply red.
• Its original music format was soft adult contemporary with its old
catchphrase “100.7 degrees cooler!”
4. • There are a total of 21 heart radio stations in the UK
• 18 of them are owned by Global Radio
• The other 3 are under a franchise.
Global Radio: Also own other radio stations for example capital and capital xtra,
classic fm and smooth radio.
Ownership of heart
5. Notable Presenters.
• There are a total of 17 current presenters at heart each with their own
unique show for example Mark Wright presents club classics on friday and
saturday evening. And former spice girl Emma Bunton presents the saturday
afternoon show with a variety of music.
• Other presenters for example are: Stephen Mulhern, Emma Willis, Jason
Donovan and Marvin Humes who does the charts of a sunday evening.
6. Daily schedule
This is an example of the daily schedule at heart fm:
01:00am-04:00am is Simon Beale, 04:00am-06:00am is the early breakfast
show with Jenni falconer, 06:00am-10:00am is the morning show presented
by Rich and Zoey, 10:00am-01:00pm is Toby anstis, 01:00pm-04:00pm is Matt
Wilkinson, 04:00pm-07:00pm is Dan Mills, 07:00pm-10:00pm is the last
scheduled show of the day and is presented by Lucy Ellis.
7. Target Audience
• The Target audience of heart fm is between the age of 25-44 years old, and
have targeted their shows for pretty most everyone. And they say that
anyone from a husband, wife, parent or professional will enjoy the show.
8. Audience Figures
• 41% of hearts listeners are found in the target audience and are found in
the age of 25-44 years old.
• 58% of hearts listeners are female and the other 42% are male.
• The average heart listener listens to an average of 7.2 hours each week.
9. Final Thoughts
By this information I have found out that heart fm is very popular and that it is
broadcast all over the country and that most people in the UK can listen to it
on the radio. Hearts audience are very loyal and they average about 7.2 hours
a week listening time.
10. BBC Radio 5 Live
“On digital and online this is BBC Radio 5 Live”
11. History
• First broadcast in 1994
• Ran a 24 hour service
• First audiences reached over
4 million
• Rebranded in 2000
• 5 live sports extra was
launched in 2002
14. Daily Schedule
Here is a typical weekday schedule for radio 5 live:
0100 - 0500 - Up all Night, 0500 - 0515 - Morning Reports,
0515 - 0600 - Wake up to Money, 0600 - 0900 - 5 live
breakfast, 0900 - 1000 - 5 live breakfast, 1000 - 1300 - 5 live
daily, 1300 - 1600 - Afternoon edition, 1600 - 1900 - 5 live
drive, 1900 -1930 - 5 live sport, 1930 - 2100 - 5 live (sport
specific section that changes daily e.g 5 live olympics/ 5 live
rugby world cup) 2100 - 2230 - 5 live sport, 2230 - 0100 -
Coverage of the day’s main news stories.
However, radio 5 live’s schedule changes daily sports stories.
5 Live has a different weekend schedule, focused on live
commentary for weekends.
15. Target audience
• Heavy focus on sports and news rather than music
• Predominantly aimed at an older audience, most likely
to be male and interested in sports.
• I imagine the typical 5 live listener to be male aged
around 30-40, has a big interest in sports but too low of
an income to regularly watch live games and so will
listen to commentary instead.
16. Audience figures
Survey period - March 2015 to June 2015
Total population covered - 53,575,000 (adults 15+)
Total listeners per week - 5,322,000 (adults 15+)
Hours per listener - 6.8 (hours per week)
Total hours listened - 36,436,000 (hours per week)
17. Radio 5 live Sports Extra
• launched in 2002 as a “sister-station” to
radio 5 live
• First programme was commentary of
Manchester United vs Sunderland
• Has limited competition regarding sports
commentaries with Talksport being it’s
main competitor.
18. Thoughts on the station
• Liked the sports commentaires
• Found it too boring to listen to all the time
• Lacked variety
19. Thoughts on what I found out
• Found it interesting as I assumed they would have a small audience but they
can reach audiences of over 5 million users per week.
• I also liked the way that the station's programming is not rigid and is
dependant on the day’s major sporting/news stories.
