Planning Task:
Location & Setting
Opening Scene
This is where the friends will hang out and be seen at the beginning of
the trailer.
For this we will need a location that is bright and open.
This will give the impression of a happy setting, before Ben’s condition
worsens.
We considered a range of locations for this:
Parks
These are open and easily accessible places.
However Parks are used too frequently and are not very
visually appealing
Beach
These are less accessible, however, they do offer a unique
location that would set our film apart from others
Final Decision
We chose a beach location for this film as it
gives the best opportunity to create a
setting that defines this film as both
unusual - visually and plot-wise - and
quite British as well.
There is an abundance of beaches nearby
on the Isle of Wight, however many are
either too busy or too inaccessible.
Our final decision is too film this scene on
East Cowes beach as it is reasonably
quiet and accessible for all of our actors.
Psychiatrist Office/Consultation Room
In these scenes we see Ben discussing the surgery
and its outcomes, with a psychiatrist.
This setting needs to be small, clean and
uncluttered.
Within the room we may use a desk and posters to
give the impression this room is in a hospital,
but not an operating theatre.
There are a few possible locations within school
that we considered.
Interview room
Empty Classroom
School Office
Final Decision
After careful consideration we decided to
use one of the teacher’s offices for this
scene.
This is because the interview rooms were
too small to be able to set up the
camera in the right position.
In addition to this the teacher’s office has a
computer screen and board that will be
important props for the scene.
School
There will be multiple scenes shot in and
around the school grounds.
This will entail a main entrance to the
school, where we see Ben walking
through after his surgery
We will also need an area for the friends
to socialise
Possible locations within the school
include:
Classroom
Corridor with lockers
The main entrance
Final Decision
For Ben’s scene as he walks back into school,
following his surgery, we will use the Sixth
form entrance and possibly the stairs. THis is
because this is an open area and allows us to
use extras in the scene.
Due to the difficulty of setting up lighting
effects in the school toilets we will use the
dance studio for the scene when Ben is
staring into the mirror.
Lastly, we will use for the scenes where the
friends are just hanging out in school.
Ben’s House
During these scenes Ben is seen to start to
change as the effects of his surgery
make him more aggressive.
For these scenes we will need a room that
is well lit and has furniture, to make the
shot more appealing and homely.
In another scene Ben and Luke are playing
video games.
We considered each of our houses for this
location.
Final Decision
In the end we decided that Frankie’s house
was best for this location and that the
other houses would be more suited to
other locations during the filming
process.
The reason for this is:
It is very close to other locations which can be
used in the production.
In a quiet location, easier to film scenes which
require silence.
The house is well lit
However, as Frankie does not have a
Michelle’s House
The house needs to be reasonably sized to
show that she has a decent upbringing
and matches the clothes that she wears.
A lot of shots will feature the outside of the
house and so it needs to be quite
solitary to avoid background noise such
as traffic interfering with the shot. Some
scenes inside the house will need to be
well lit with a homely appeal.
Again, we considered each of our houses
for this scene.
Final Decision
We decided that the best house for this
location is Josh’s.
The main reason for this is that many of
the shots will feature the outside of the
house. Therefore we need a house that
is big and picturesque.
Continually, the house is in a secluded
area, therefore there is less chance of
background noise such as traffic and
other people interfering with the shot.
Estate
For the scene where Ben commits his first
murder we need a somewhat quiet
street that is lit by streetlights.
We considered a number of nearby estates
and the town centre.
However, we also had to take into account
how accessible these places are for our
actors and how busy they will be in
terms of people and traffic
Final Decision
We decided to use the estate near the
school.
We chose this because it is easy to access
from school and it is very quiet outside
of the “school run” hours.
This is particularly important as part of our
scene involves one of our own cars and
so we need to film away from other cars
Forest
For the scenes where Ben buries the body we
will need a dark, overgrown and sheltered
area.
This will need to be dark and secluded in
order to appear very sinister.
Location-wise we considered a number of
forests on the island such as Borthwood and
Parkhurst.
Final Decision
We had to take into account the
accessibility of each of these forests and
how close they were to road traffic - that
may create unwanted background noise
-
Eventually we decided to use Borthwood
forest
We chose this location as it is close to
where we are filming another scene and
so we could film both in the same day
