• Playing popular well known and current music.
• Topical conversation and talking points
• Interviews with celebrities
• Live music
• Calls from listeners
• Games and special features
• Regular news bulletins
5. Live broadcasting
and the presenter
• The Radio one breakfast show is broadcast live every morning
from the BBC studios in London, from 6:30 to 10am
• The regular show host is Nick Grimshaw, his signature style is
lively, bubbly and chatty and his ironic sense of humour,
these are all traits that attract the listeners and make them
listen every day, they feel they can connect with him, also he
has a northern accent meaning working class people can
relate to this and creates a sense of familiarity, which is a form
of social integration.
6. Music conventions
• The type of music that is played on the show is in the majority chart
music this is because of the large audience and the wide range of ages
listening so to appeal a wider audience.
• Although most of the music is current chart music, specialist and
alternative music Is also played for the sake of some special features.
• Radio one is known for being very supportive of new music and does
this through BBC introducing where new bands and artist can get
airplay for there music and in turn recognition. Therefore the breakfast
show will occasionally play certain songs from this playlist.
• The breakfast show starts with a signature jingle, meaning it is
recognisable and people know what show it is. for example somebody
may have their alarm set from the beginning of the show, 6:30, so they
will be woken up by the same jingle every day and they recognise this
every time it comes on.
7. Topical conversation and talking points and
Interviews
• Due to the time of the show and the style of the presenter the
conversation on the show is very relaxed, light hearted chatty and
bubbly. The presenter Nick Grimshaw is known for this chatty
broadcasting style and ironic humour, so the conversation is similar
of that to friends, helping the audience connect and more likely to
listen to the show again.
• The show will have celebrities on each week for interviews such as
actors artists and well known public figures. This is often because
they have a film, product or single to promote. This makes the
audience feel aware of what is happening what films are out and
new music releases. When the guests are on the show, the
presenter will often have a game or special feature to include the
celebrity. This allows the audience to see a different side, and feel
they can relate to the presenter and the celebrity better.
8. Calls from listeners
• The show will often have calls from listeners
for games or at certain times of the day every
day for example they always have a caller at
around 6:50, if they have an interesting topic
for example if it’s their birthday.
• This interaction with the audience makes
them feel connected with the presenter and
they can relate with the other callers
9. Games and features
• The breakfast show has regular and signature games and
features that are played each day. An example of this is a
feature called ‘Nicks tape', a dance music inspired segment,
featuring different radio on dj’s who mix different tracks live,
similar to a live dj set. This is scheduled every Friday for the
last hour of the show. This means it signifies the end of the
week for the audience , or last day of work, by creating a
feature that differs to the layout of the normal show, e.g
alternative music it gives the listener something to look
forward to and reason to listen again.
• Games on the show are a chance for the audience to
participate, and connect with the show.
10. News bulletins
The breakfast show has new bulletins every
hour and half past the hour. The news studio
and team is different to the breakfast studio
and production team. Having news breaks
every half hour allows the audience to stay
informed and connected. Because of the time
of the show any big or new news will be aired
for the first time on the show, so having
regular bulletins means people hear the news
as soon as they wake up.
