Objectives
To allow us to learn more about the life of being an quantity surveyor.
To allow us to experience and expose to the actual working
environment in site such as working under the hot weather.
To allow us to see how the quantity surveyors, engineers, contractors
and workers communicate and work to each others in the site and the
teamwork between them.
To allow us to recognize the building materials in real and how the site
workers name the materials in site rather than recognizing by pictures.
This will allow us to learn faster and more compared to a in-class
lecture.
To allow us to have a basic understanding about the process in
constructing a building.
To allow us to have the oppocunity to be in the construction site before
we graduate as an quantity surveyor.
To allow us to have the awareness of taking care our own safety by
wearing safety helmet and boots whenever we step into construction
site. This is very important as there will be many safety problems occur
in site.
To enable us to see how the construction machineries work such as
mixing concrete by concrete mixer.

Introduction
For this visit, we were required to produce a site report. This assignment was
intergrated by Measurement 1, Building Materials, and Construction
Technology. Since it was a site report, Sr. Ang had planned a site visit to a
construction site for us. After she got the permission from the contractor of the
site, we paid our visit to the site on 20th June 2014. The registration number
for the site is JKKP/WP/14/03/9119, it is located along the Old Klang Road,
which is also beside Pearl Point Hotel. Sr. Ang reminded all of us to get a
safety helmet for ourselves before the trip as it is the safety requirement for us
to enter into a construction site. In our batch, we have around 56 students and
the bus only can carry up to 40 passengers, therefore some of us would need
to go by car pooling.
On that day, Sr. Ang was the only one who accompanied us to the site. We
left our campus at around 0815 and the journey took us around 45 minutes to
reach the destination as the traffic in that morning was moderate.
We entered the site with safety helmet and the safety and health officer, Mr.
S.A Jivanatham welcomed us with some speeches about safety precautions
and introduced the project to us.

Content / Technical observation
The project ongoing in this site is a mix-use development construction project.
It combines both commercial and residential in just one building and it is
named as Pearl Suria. The whole project will cost around RM101, 600, 000.
The estimation for the completion of this project will be in November 2015.
This building only consists one block which has 25 levels. There will be 2
levels of basement carpark and 2 levels of shopping malls at ground floor and
first floor. The basement carparks are reserved for the commercial. Level 3rd
to level 6th will be built to use as residential carparks. Then, the service
apartments will be built starting from level 7th to level 24th, which consist of a
total of 403 units of service apartment. The last level, level 25th which is also
the top level of this building will be built as a Rooftop. Other than these, there
will be a pedestrian bridge which linked the Pearl Suria to Pearl Point Hotel.
After Mr. Jivanatham finished breifing us about the project and safety
precautions, we proceeded to the basement of this building. While I was about
to leave to basement, I saw a big pipe which is connected to the upper floor. I
was wondering and I asked Mr. Jivanatham about this. He told me that it was
used to transfer concrete from the concrete mixer to the upper floor and it was
made by steel. While I was on my way to basement, I saw the temporary
accommodation for the workers. Their rooms were all linked together like a
long house and were fully made by timbers. I even saw some of the workers
were playing chess. They were enjoying and they looked warm and happy
while they saw us walking by. We were then came to a bigger space and Mr.
Tan explained to us about how the basement is built and the type of
foundation. Bore piles were used as the foundation of this building and the
bore piles surrounded the basement and formed a retaining wall.
Out of a sudden, I saw there are a lot of square-shaped things beside us and I
asked Mr. Jivanatham about that. It looked familiar to me as I may be seen it
somewhere else before. I was dawned when Mr. Jivanatham told me that was
actually air-con shaft. After that, we moved back to the ground floor level
again, I saw the workers dried their clothes on the mainframe of scaffoldings.
When we reached the entrance of the basement, Sr. Ang showed us that the
6. 5
size of beam does not need to be the same as the column which it is
connected to. Then we were all following the pathway to first floor, I looked on
top of me and I realized that there were many pipes on top of me. Out of my
curiousity, I asked Mr. Jivanatham again. He explained to me that were
sanitary piping and it was used to transfer waste and soil water. And, Sr. Ang
suddenly asked us to look at the building beside us and pointed to the bars
coming out from the columns and beams. She told us that those were starter
bars which were used for extention purposes. And then suddenly she pointed
to the other side and asked us to look at the beams and told us that beams
can also be in slope.
Then, we continued moving to second and third floor. I was talking to my
coursemates and suddenly I kicked on something. I kicked some
reinforcement bars which coming out from the floor. I looked at them and the
word “stirrups & links” came to my mind then I asked Mr. Jivanatham whether
I was correct. He answered “yes” and told me that later they would surround it
with formworks and pour concrete inside the formwork to form a divider.
After that, one of my coursemates asked Mr. Jivanatham whether they have
the concrete cover, Mr. Jivanatham looked around and he picked up
something on the floor and showed to us. He then explained to us how was it
made and he said they usually called it “Dao Gua” in the site. Then he told us
that there was also something called “vulgar word” in the site, he took up
something from the floor again and he told us that was actually called joint pin
and also explained to us about its function.
We were then finally came to the third floor, which was the last floor we could
visit. We came to the scaffolders and listened to Mr. Tan about its function.
After that, I would never espect that we could have the chance to walk down
to the ground level by using scaffoldings. We came to the ground level and it
was almost the end of our visit. Before we went into the site office to have our
refreshment drinks, Sr. Ang showed us the staircase which hasn’t been filled
with concrete. We could clearly see there were reinforcement bars inside the
formworks and Sr. Ang explained to us about the procedures in constructing a
staircase. It was amazing when we stepped into the site office because it was

so cold compared to outside. We were then enjoying our drinks and asking
questions. It was a memorable site visit and Mr. Jivanatham, Mr. Tan and Sr.
Ang had satisfied all our curiosities. We took a group photo and shaked hand
with Mr. Jivanatham and Mr. Tan before we left.

Learning outcome / Conclusion
I have learnt and experieced a lot after this site visit. First of all, I have
experieced the life of being an quantity surveyor . Going to site is one of the
job for being a quantity surveyor especially contractor quantity surveyor , so it
is a good experience for us since we got this great chance to pay a visit to
construction site before we graduated. It is not an easy job to work in
construction site because they need to work under uncertainty weather such
as working under hot sun and even raining.
Other than this, It was great as I got the chance to see and expose to the
workers’ life. The workers are playing a vital role in construction site, we will
never get a completed buildng without them. And, the teamwork among all the
members in a construction team is also important as they need to work with
each other in order to finish up the construction on time.
Besides, I got a better and clearer idea and understading on the building
materials and also the processes in constructing a building. We are able to
see those materials and processes directly rather than just seeing pictures
and videos during lecture. This will definitely help us to recognize the building
materials better and we can learn faster in the future.
Last and also the most important thing, is our safety in the site. It is the most
important thing out of so many factors. Signboards about safety precautions
can be seen everywhere in the site, especially at the entrance. Anyone who
wants to enter into a construction site must be equiped with safety helmet and
safety boots, or else you will not be allowed to go in. The safety rules need to
be followed strictly by everyone in order to ensure the safety of everyone
inside the construction site. As a conclusion, it was a great and
knowledgeable visit as I really have learnt a lot of experiences from this site
visit. I hope there will be more coming in the future.
