This study analyzed different types of small dairy farms in Gujarat, India through interviews and field work. It identified 6 main farm types: big dairy farms, medium diversified farms, small dairy farms, small diversified farms, sharecroppers, and daily agricultural workers. The farms were compared based on land productivity, animal productivity, and labor productivity. The results showed that landless and pastoral farms had the highest land productivity. Big dairy farms had the highest animal productivity but faced management issues. However, the small farms and sharecroppers had very low labor productivity, making dairy farming highly demanding for these groups. This sustainability issue could reduce inclusiveness in the dairy sector over time.
