Its origin lies in the myth of the heroic
deeds of the Greek soldier Filipides, who in
the year 490 BC. He died of fatigue after
running about 37 miles from Marathon to
Athens to announce victory over the
Persian army.

In fact the way Filipides ran from Athens to
Sparta to ask for reinforcements would be
about 225 miles.
Still, the myth gained much popularity
about what really happened, and in honor of
this competition with the name
"Marathon", it was included in the 1896
Athens games.

was a distance of about 42 kilometers.
But in 1908 the Games were held in London. The
starting line was located next to a window at
Windsor Castle so that half of the royal family
could contemplate it.
