THE ETHICAL AND TECHNICAL ISSUE IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
1. THE ETHICAL AND
TECHNICAL ISSUE
IN STRUCTURAL
ENGINEERING
ENR4004 Non-Technical Aspects of Engineering
2. INTRODUCTION
Structural engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the
application of the laws of physics, mathematics and empirical knowledge to
safely design the âbones and load bearing elements of man-made structures.
Modern day structural engineering provides a large and detailed body of
knowledge that can accurately predict the performance of different shapes and
materials used in structures to resist loads and stresses on structures. The
principles of structural engineering were used thousands of years ago when
building structures like the pyramids in Egypt or the Acropolis in Greece.

4. YOU ARE A TECHNICIAN MEMBER OF THE INSTITUTION.
YOU HAVE STARTED WORK AT A NEW FIRM OF CONSULTING
ENGINEERS. YOU BECOME AWARE THAT THEY USE (AND
THEREFORE YOU MUST USE) PIRATED SOFTWARE AND YOU
HAVE TOLD THE IT MANAGER THAT THIS IS WRONG. HE
SAYS THAT EVERYONE DOES THIS AND THEN IGNORES YOU.

5. THE ETHICAL ISSUE
5
Pirated software is theft. Furthermore, using software that does not receive official updates and
support from the programmers means it may not be appropriately updated which could cause
structures to be put at risk.
6. INAPPROPRIATE RESPONSE(S)
1
Inform the company whose software has
been pirated.
2
It is much better to whistle blow than
informing the company whose software has
been pirated.
