3. The main phases
The process is divided into a sequence of
phases, both hardware and software in which
there is a significant human contribution.
The 4 main phases are:
1. data acquisition;
2. preprocessing (or pretreatment of data);
3. segmentation and adaptation of the surface;
4. 3D model creation.
Acquisition of mechanical machine
4. Purpose of the acquisition
A distinction can be made between
Analytical reverse engineering and
synthetic reverse engineering.
- In the Analytical reverse engeenering
the purpose is to obtain a 3D digital
model in order to perfect cloning
- In the Synthetic reverse engeenering
the aim is to obtain a CAD model on
which to make changes
5. Data acquisition
The first phase, the data
acquisition, is the one in
which the external shape is
detected, through the
construction of a cloud of
points belonging to the
surface of the object.
Recap software for cloud point acquisition
6. Why it is used
1. For precises measures;
2. Many measures in a little time
3. Data acquisition and saving
speed;
4. Use clear and simple data.

7. Where it is used
1. Architectural (conservation of cultural heritage)
2. Industrial-mechanical (expansion of plants)
3. Criminology (Reconstruction of the scene of crime)
4. Road accidents (Braking measurement- impact

5. Hospital (prosthesis construction)

8. Lessons at school
An expert of reverse engineering named Enrico
Squillante came to our school and with my teacher
they made us lessons about RE.

9. Laser measurement
During the laboratory we learned how to use the laser
scanner and we made some scans together.

10. I want to thank all my teachers, Enrico and
my school for giving us the opportunity of
this experience about Reverse Engineering.
Thank you for your attention.
