2. As our chosen film genre was a drama. My research consisted of viewing 20 different
films to keep myself in touch with the generic conventions of the genre. We found that
many drama big screens were targeted towards people aged 15+. And so, we decided our
target audience for our film would be aimed towards this age group.
This is because the content shown in our film showed:
1. Some drug use - shown in the close-up of the mother taking pills
2. Also there would be some strong language if the whole film was to be produced
3. There would also be scenes of violence throughout the film, by the mother.
Our target audience
3. This are the rules warranted to be of a 15 rated film. These
guidelines are clear for filmmakers:
• Portrayals of sexual activity
• Strong verbal reference to sex
• Drug taking
• Strong language
• Discriminatory language or behaviour
• Sexual nudity
• strong verbal references to sex
• Brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal reference to sexual
violence
4. The beginning of my media product is focused on the main protagonist which is a male character and
the other a female. This primarily directs the film towards a male audience; as they can relate to the male
character more than they would of the female character.
The opening of my media product is also relatable to females, as they can interpret and connect with the
emotional turmoil attributed to motherhood. We included a female character to include not just males
but females to our target audience. Thus, branching out on to both sexes who might enjoy watching this
film and helping the product to appeal to a wide variety of people; opposed to the usual female target
audience accredited to this genre.
The characters and setting of this film are all working class; in the D-Group job level and have targeted
the film towards people within the working-class. The dynamics of the film conform to the negative
stereotypes associated with the working class (connotations of the working class would be lazy and
dirty) But, I would also include some positive to the working class.
The female character is around 30 years old with a teenage fostered son. Through the use of characters
we can make an emotional connection with our audience. As a group the two ages of our characters can
relate to both a younger and older audience and so we are able to access a much bigger audience within
this spectrum.
GENDER, AGE, SOCIAL CLASS
5. I have targeted our intended audience by looking at a variety of reviews to gather a
true idea of what our target audience want to see. This will help us to shape our
product to suit our target audience when planning it. This also aided us in the decision
making, involved in creating our idea for the film.
We decided to relate our ideas to gather an some idea of what key things relate and are
reoccurring in drama films. This allowed us to see which characters, props and
locations we would need to use (and other such things), that our intended audience
would prefer to see.
HOW HAVE WE TARGETED OUR
AUDIENCE?
6. To conclude I believe that our product worked perfectly in conjunction with our research and planning. I am
content with our product and feel that we have adequately targeted the group we set out to target. During the
creation, production and editing of our media product, we focused on how we would appeal to certain the
younger and middle aged. We felt that dramas themselves appeal to a younger audience and so we approached the
opening with the intentions of making it suitable for not just a younger audience but middle aged audience.
After deciding what our target audience would be, we had to look into what issues and the themes would be. We
looked at both successful and unsuccessful films within this genre and use this to reflect on how this would
impact our film. We used our age as an advantage, when developing our film; as the main protagonist is the same
age group as myself and my peers. I feel that the editing we used and the effects we implemented in our drama
opening reflected a specific stereotype and connected with our genre very well. I feel that if created into a film
would be rated and enjoyed universally by the target age group.
