1. Evaluation Question 1:
When I was planning for my main film project, my group and I had to think about what conventions we
had to use to make our opening look good. As our film was an action/mystery film the main conventions
for our film had to involve a fast paced plot and can contain scenes of violence which make action films
effective because it can make an audience excited by everything that is happening. Some conventions
of mystery films mainly include an unsolved crime that has happened and someone who is trying to
unravel the crime by working out evidence and tracking down criminals, this makes mystery films
effective because it makes them unpredictable and the audience will want to keep watching to find out
what happens.
As my film was an action/mystery film putting all of these conventions together would be important for us
to make our film opening really good. Having all the necessary conventions made our film opening
unpredictable yet exciting as well which makes it interesting for an audience watching the film.
2. In my film opening, my group used props such as a whiteboard and images we made ourselves.
We had the whiteboard so that we could then have the images on that to show an evidence
board of the crime that has happened which you start to learn more about as the film goes on.
These props are effective because they were original and creative so the film became more
interesting.
Costumes are important for films, but you also have to make sure that they are right for the type
of film that you are planning to do. In our film our main character mainly wears hoodies and
casual clothing as he isn’t the sort of person that likes to stand out. Him wearing casual clothing
is effective because it is the type of clothing that teenagers would wear and our main character
is a teenager.
The lighting in our film is mainly bright so that a lot can be seen, there isn’t much dark lighting at
all. Having a suited lighting helps to set the mood so having bright lighting effects the film by
having gloom cause subdued lighting that then provides a shortcut to viewers emotions.
For my film I thought that my group and I made the right choices for our settings. The settings we
had included the woods in the Smiths Wood area and Smith’s Wood Sports College. Both
settings gave us a good option of shots that we were could do and there were a lot of areas
around them that we could film at, the woods were a great place to film because there was a
lot of space around so it was effective as there was more room to do a chase scene that we
planned to do. The school was a good place to film our evidence board scene as we needed a
room to have a whiteboard in and was where we couldn’t be disturbed while doing it, doing it
in a large room made it effective as it made it more realistic and looked very good when it was
filmed.
