ASSURE Method Assignment
1. A- Analyze Learner:
a. There are seventeen students in my First Grade, Special Education
classroom. Ten are boys and seven are girls; twelve of which are
Caucasian, three are African-American, and two are Hispanic.
Seven of the seventeen students have mild to severe ADHD.
Teaching this classroom will require many different activities and
methods of learning for the students to understand the lesson.
2. S- State Objective:
a. My students will demonstrate the months of the year by singing
songs, hands on activities, visual aid, and reading stories by the
end of the week with 100% accuracy.
3. S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
a. In order for my students to learn the months of the year, I will
incorporate many learning styles to help them accomplish the
task.
i. Singing songs- I will let them listen to the “12 Months of the
Year Song” by The Learning Station. This song requires
learner participation, which will help the students
memorize the months of the year.

2. ii. Hands on activities- I will make index cards with one month
on each card. The students must line up in the correct order
of the months of the year. After this is accomplished, the
cards will be given to different students and they must get
in the correct order again.
iii. Visual Aid- I will show the students the calendar and the
order of each month. They will be placed on the board the
entire week so the students can use them if they need
assistance during an activity. The seasons will also be
explained during this time.
iv. Reading- I will read the book “Twelve Hats for Lena: A Book
of Months” by Karen Katz. This book is about a girl who
makes a hat for each month of the year. This will help the
students visualize what they do each month and help them
to remember the order of the months.
4. U- Utilize the Media and Materials:
a. Prior to giving this lesson, I will make sure I have the CD for the
“12 Months of the Year Song” or pull it up on YouTube before the
class. I will make sure that my Index cards are laminated and
prepared for class. The calendar will be set up so that the students
can reference it throughout the week, and the “Twelve Hats for
Lena: A Book of Months” will be set out to read.
3. 5. R- Require Learner Participation:
a. Each day, I will teach my students the months of the year by doing
a different activity listed above. On the last day of the week, I will
review all of the activities and make my final assessments of the
students to make sure that they can demonstrate and explain the
months of the year. I will start out the week with the Visual Aid. I
will explain and describe the months of the year to the students
and help them understand what we will do throughout the rest of
the week. The next day I will review the Visual Aid and teach them
the “Twelve Months of the Year Song”. Repetition of the activities
done in prior days will help the students with the activities in the
following days. The next day, I will review the Visual Aid, the Song,
and have them participate in the Hands on Activity. By this time,
they should be familiar with the months of the year, and should be
able to accomplish this activity with little to no help from me or
other students. The next day I will briefly review the Visual Aid,
the Song, what they did in the Hands On Activity and read them
the book, “Twelve Hats for Lena: A Book of Months”. This will
remind them of what they have learned all week. On the final day, I
will ask them to recite the Months of the Year from memory. The
first time, I will leave the calendar on the board, but the second
time, I will remove the calendar to make sure they can
demonstrate the months of the year with no assistance.
4. 6. E- Evaluate and Revise:
a. Since this is a First Grade, Special Education classroom,
assessment is sometimes difficult. However, I will be walking
around the classroom while the children are participating in the
activities I have prepared for them. I will also be the one listening
to them recite the months of the year at the end of the week. I will
make sure that throughout the week, I will correct any student
who is confused or saying the months of the year in the wrong
order. I will listen to the students individually say the months of
the year without help. They can have two chances to get them
right. The first time, they can use the video to sing along with or
can ask for two helps. The second time, they must do it without
any assistance. However, I am confident that every student will be
able to demonstrate and recite the months of the year by the end
of the week.
