TV adverts – textual analysis and research phase 2
This work will contribute to the Research and Planning mark you will receive
for the A2 coursework unit – to do so this work will need to be submitted
electronically (you could simply take a photograph of your work).
For this work you should watch at least 8 different adverts for the same
product type by different brands
TV advert questions
1. What features does this advert contain? (look to the list of items of
features from the reading material)
2. What type of TV advert is this? (refer to the reading material and the
section headed ‘Types of Television Advertisement’
3. Who is the target audience for the product? (Consider age, gender
and any other factor you consider relevant)
4. What image is constructed for the product? (Is the product something
that improves you, something that makes you more attractive, makes
you cooler enables you to have more friends?) You need to be specific
and use specific terminology – identify camera shots, discuss mise-en-
scene, diegetic sound and other technical elements as appropriate.
5. What social groups are represented in the advert and how are they
represented? (Consider age, gender, ethnicity, social class and other
groups as appropriate)
6. What mode of address is used? (Is the style and tone of the advert
serious or funny, formal or informal, or some combination of these
things?) Why do you think this is the case?
