A2 evaluation

  1. 1. G324 Advanced Portfolio The Evaluation In the evaluation the following four questions must be addressed:  In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? What have you learned from your audience feedback? How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? The form of the presentation could be a PowerPoint with video/audio links/screen grabs to your work, using screen grabsdemonstrating your progress. The PowerPoint could be supported by an audio or written commentary. Each of the following questions needs to be answered in your evaluation HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO THE EXAM??? Question 1(a) in the exam requires candidates to describe and evaluate their skills development over the course of their production work, from Foundation Portfolio to Advanced Portfolio. The focus of this evaluation must be on skills development, and the question will require them to adapt this to one or two specific production practices. The list of practices to which questions will relate is as follows: Digital Technology Creativity Research and planning Post-production Using conventions from real media texts All of the above can be covered as you complete your evaluation, so effectively you are answering part of the first question in the exam, as you complete your evaluation over Easter.
  2. 2. Question 1:In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Consider the following: The title of the Film/Music Video/Documentary/Newspaper Setting/location (or ‘Context’ in terms of documentary or newspaper) Costumes and props ( or design and layout/house style) Camerawork and editing ( or photography and print design and layout) Title font and style ( or print design and layout) Story and how the opening sets it up (conventional/fragmented/elliptical) Genre and how the opening suggests it (i.e. horror/narrative music video/tabloid newspaper) How characters are introduced (in film or written copy) Special effects any image manipulation you have used on video footage or photography The presentation of the above can take the form of a grid/PowerPoint slides like the one below, with a commentary explaining each section of the grid. Remember you should be focusing one what is conventional and what deviates from convention in your commentary! The grid can be constructed in Photoshop and placed on your blog, with either a written commentary or a video/audio commentary to support it. Alternatively you could construct it as your slides in PowerPoint.
  3. 3. Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Describe your ancillary texts in terms of genre and the conventions you explored. Discuss technical codes ie camera shots/mise en scene or design and layout conventions Demonstrate how these conventions/technical codes translate to your main product Remember to focus on the effectiveness of how your work on ancillaries has helped you with your main product Also comment upon how the ancillaries and your main product work together as a media product Again, use screen grabs of your work to demonstrate progress, along with your audio/written commentary Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback? Consider your audience and the conventions/deviations from convention they respond to, when experiencing your media text The best way to do this is carry out a focus group…..Consider how the focus group responds to some of the points you make in your first question about genre conventions, when viewing your product Evaluate the response of your focus group and provide pie charts/statistics to support your response Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? Evaluate how you used and developed your skills in all pieces of software and hardware used in your coursework e.g: Photoshop Premiere Audacity Marantz Digital SLR You Tube
  4. 4. Vimeo Slideshare Eblogger Remember to evaluate your progress in ALL stages of the production, for question 4.
