3. Analysis of Dorset life
• The first image shows us the front cover of the regional magazine. The image featured on the
front of the magazine is very eye catching due to the colour and size of the bird. However at the
same time, this large image goes well with the basic typography located at the top and side of
the magazine as it is neat and simple.
• The target audience is highlighted through the use of large typography as this has been
purposely used as the older generation typically have worse eye sight and so they want to make
it suitable for them to be able to read.
• The previous point is again emphasised within the article as they have used large images for
most of the page. This is because they feel that the older generation may be put off by large
amounts of text but also because it is easier to emphasise the beauty of the area through image
rather than text.
• Lastly the advert also focuses on an older target audience as it is promoting a furniture store.
Stereotypically, furniture is aimed at an older target audience as they are the main consumers
of this product. But it is also obvious that a teenager would not be interested in this advert
which emphasises the exclusion of this age group when it was being designed. Moreover the
colours used for this advert are quite dull and not as eye catching as those used in national
magazines, which means it blends in with the rest of the magazine.
5. Analysis of BBC Wildlife
• The front cover of this national magazine is a lot more colourful and has a busier
layout in comparison to the Regional magazine. This type of appearance can
suggest that there was no particular target audience in mind when designing this
front cover. Instead the colours were used to attract any aged audience. Again
this magazine has copied the style of image featured on the regional magazine.
They have used a close up of an eagle which is known as a dominant and
powerful bird which can subconsciously make the reader feel that the magazine is
dominant within the industry and therefore good.
• The target audience of a national scale is emphasised by the heading at the top of
the article page which states ‘UK Highlights’. It is then followed by a busy layout
of articles overlapping each other which is eye catching but also very confusing.
This emphasises the need for a younger reader as it is more complex to follow
and the quantity of text matches the amount of images.
• Lastly the diagram located on the right hand side is a close up of a dragonfly.
Moreover they have annotated it in order to explain the different parts of its
body which is very childish to include in a magazine and almost copies the idea of
a human body description for children. Also the layout of this unusual article
almost reflects a mind map which again is simple but at a childish level.
