ACU Paramedic
Assessment 1 – Written Assignment: Part B A major component of the care Paramedics provide is
the assessment of a patient's physical status, which is the ground for any further treatment. The
assessment method that an Advanced Care Paramedic follows is a systematic assessment referred to
as the Primary Survey. The aim of this fundamental assessment is to give an initial diagnosis of the
patient as well as identifying any imminent threats to the patient. This assessment is used so that a
Paramedic can decide how to treat the patient while staying within the boundaries of their scope of
practice. Throughout this essay the concept of a primary survey within the scope of practice of an
Advanced Care Paramedic will be understood. Additionally ... Show more content on

The pulse is an indication of an individual's heart rate. When checking for a pulse in the primary
survey, begin with palpating the patient's radial or carotid artery (Basic Patient Care 2012, p. 50).
This may reveal a normal (60–100 beats/min), tachycardia (<100 beats/min), bradycardia (> 60
beats/min) or asystole heart rate. Additionally, the capillary refill may also provide details about a
patient's cardiovascular status. This is performed by applying pressure to the nail bed and
calculating the time it to takes to refill to a normal color, which should take no more then a few
seconds otherwise suggesting capillary closure (Mick J Sanders, 2012, p. 1400). An additional
accessory to Circulation is Hemorrhages, these involve more through examinations of the pulse,
blood pressure and warmth of peripheries of patients. Additionally, you must thoroughly look for
indication of bleeding, specifically in the areas around the chest, abdomen and externally seen by
the eye. Upon finishing the danger, response and circulation components of the primary survey the
next step is the assessment and maintenance of a patient's airway. This is a crucial stage as a clear
airway allows for air to move in and out of the lungs (Primary Survey Airway Evaluation, 2015).
Patients in particular may have less ability to maintain their airway, including the tongue, or liquids

Paramedic Medical Skills
Paramedic clinical skill demonstration
As part of assessment for CSB330, students worked in small groups to demonstrate and record the
correct application of ambulance equipment and perform five clinical skills. These skills were:
Neann Immobilisation Extrication Jacket (NIEJ), Carbon Traction Emergency Medical Services
(CT–EMS) traction splint, Pelvic Circumferential Compression Device (SAM pelvic sling),
Oropharyngeal airway (OPA) and Nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) and Stiffneck cervical collar/soft
neck collar. The development of foundational skills early in the paramedic science degree is
important, as these skills need to be performed competently during clinical placement. Ambulance
practice requires a combination of skill based activity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An NPA can be used in a patient who may not be able to have an OPA inserted due to intact gag
reflex, trismus or oral trauma (QAS CPP). However, if the patient has potential or known basal skull
fractures, an NPA cannot proceed to be inserted, otherwise further damage can be caused (PG, IM).
At the same time, it is important to be aware of complications such as airway trauma, including
epistaxis, ineffectiveness due to an incorrect size or placement (QAS,

Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)
A recently graduated working paramedic is referred to as an Advanced Care Paramedic, or an ACP.
An ACP follows a clinical structure, the first aspect of the format is called a primary survey which
collects all emergency patient information. This compulsory technique aims to identify and control
catastrophic medical events to ensure patients have the best outcome possible (Hodegetts et al.,
2011). When conducting a primary survey of a patient an ACP would follow the basic structure of
danger, response, airway, breathing and circulation; usually shortened into the acronym DRABC
(Woo, 2000).
To begin the primary survey, DRABC should be started as soon as possible (QAS reference). It is
crucial for effective, emergency response to patients suffering ... Show more content on

Thus Paramedics Australasia devised an introduction to the clinical role of a paramedic, although
slight variations in differing jurisdictions. Under Paramedics Australasia a paramedic is a health
professional that provides emergency medical treatment and assessment, rapid patient response in an
out–of–hospital setting (Paramedics.org, 2016) It is important for paramedics not to exceed their
scope of practice as the patient outcome is significantly decreased, a multidisciplinary view on the
care being provided is negatively affected which in turn ensures non–informed decisions are being
made for the patient unknowingly (Paramedics.org, 2011). If a graduated paramedic exceeds their
scope of practice, patient outcomes become substandard to the care they could provide within their
scope of practise (Fitzgerald,

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT OF INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES
The airline industry, like many other industries, is increasingly exposed to competition. Increased
competition has two effects on firms: it creates downward pressures on output prices, and it creates
incentives for improving productivity and efficiency. Many airlines have been forced to undertake
major restructuring in order to meet these challenges. Many researchers have used different model to
decompose changes in airline profitability into two components: productivity and price recovery
ability. The study concluded that increased competition in international air transport markets has put
pressures on carriers' ability to raise prices. However input prices, like labor, fuel, materials, flight
equipment, ground property and equipment have been increasing. They also demonstrated that
airlines have made tremendous effort to improve efficiency to counteract such trends, yet large
fluctuations in profitability are still an ongoing reality. Due to these fluctuations in airline fortunes,
early warning systems of imminent distress are of benefit to management and airline stakeholders
such as creditors and investors. No prediction

Southwest Airlines And The State Of Texas
Back in March of 1967, Southwest Airlines was first founded under a different name, Air Southwest
Company, by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher . With his own funds of $500 thousand, Kelleher filed
an application with the Texas Aeronautics Commission for the right to fly commercial airplanes in
the state of Texas. In February 20th of 1968, the Texas Aeronautics Commission voted unanimously,
granting Air Southwest a certificate of public convenience and necessity. The following day, Braniff,
Trans Texas (later known as Texas International), and Continental Airlines obtained a restraining
order from Travis County District, prohibiting the certificate to be delivered to Air Southwest
Company . Air Southwest Company tried to file appeal with the Austin State District Court and the
Third Court of Civil Appeals. Both courts ruled against Air Southwest, forcing Herb Kelleher to
appeal with the Texas Supreme Court. The Texas Supreme Court unanimously voted to overturn the
lower court's decisions and ruled in favor of Air Southwest . In December of 1970, the United States
Supreme Court denied the appeal by Braniff and Texas International to remove Air Southwest
certification . In 1983, Winifred Barnum, a children's author and illustrator, wrote a children's book
based on Southwest's legal fight called Gumwrappers and Goggle. In Jan 1st of 1971, Lamar Muse
joined Air Southwest as the President. In March of 1971, Lamar Muse raised $1.25 million for the
company by selling promissory

1. Political: "In some cases, foreign governments limit U.S. air carriers' rights to carry passengers
beyond designated gateway cities in foreign countries."
This can affect the American Airlines company in the competitive airline industry because if some
foreign governments deny the rights to U.S. air carriers to carry passengers beyond designated
cities, the loyal customers of American Airlines would choose another airline that would be accepted
by foreign governments, which will ultimately decrease American Airline ticket sales followed by a
decrease in profits. 2. Economic: "The airline industry is subject to ... Show more content on

All airlines offer products and services of similar nature 4. Airlines enjoy substantial as well as
major economies of scale 5. There is growth through merger 6. Airlines are mutually dependant on
one another 7. Price rigidity and non – price competition 8. Price Transparency and collusion
Having said that, it is now amply clear that airlines, whether full service carriers or low cost, short
haul or long haul operate in an oligopoly. Competition Within The Airline Industry A key
characteristic of an oligopoly is limited competition, collusion and interdependence within firms. In
recent times, we have seen sworn public enemies colluding privately. British Airways and Virgin
Atlantic coming together to fix the passenger fee for 'fuel surcharge' to the flier. The first to
investigate were the Office for Fair Trade and after much investigation, the trial broke down on 10

Cathay Pacific might have illegally co–ordinated prices for passenger flights between London
Heathrow and Hong Kong's Chep Lap Kok airport between 2002 and 2006. [3] Airlines compete in
several other ways as well. Ticket prices fluctuate and the earlier you purchase, the cheaper it is.
Frequencies and timings of flights differ over sectors. With regard to timings, British Airways have

Oropharyngeal Airway
Respiratory emergencies can be caused by obstructions, inflammations, trauma, and several
different disease processes. The most common obstruction of the airway is the tongue. This usually
occurs when the patient has become unconscious secondary to another cause such as intoxication,
low blood sugar, or trauma. While tongue obstruction of the airway can have deadly results, it can
be easily solved by re–positioning the airway using the either the jaw thrust maneuver if trauma is
suspected, or the head–tilt chin–lift if no trauma is suspected. Also if the patient is unconscious and
has no gag reflex you can use an oropharyngeal airway to hold the tongue up and out of the airway.
However, using an oropharyngeal airway does not mean that you can ... Show more content on

Other times severe trauma can cause pulmonary edema such as blood in the lungs. Patients who are
unresponsive for various reasons such as cardiac arrest, alcohol intoxication, or low blood sugar can
aspirate stomach contents due to the loss of their ability to protect their own airway. Aspiration can
severely impede the alveoli's ability to exchange gases. The patient can suffocate if action is not
taken promptly. The aspiration may also cause pneumonia or other types of infections that can be
potentially deadly for the patient. This is one of the reasons why managing and controlling n
unconscious patient's airway is so crucial during pre–hospital care. Another critical respiratory
emergency is a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can be caused by a blood clot, by an
air bubble, by a large foreign body in the circulatory system such as a catheter shear, or in rare cases
by amniotic fluid in pregnant females. Whatever the cause of the embolism, the results can have the
same deadly consequences. Most blood clots that become pulmonary embolisms originate in the
legs of patients with poor circulation of some type of leg

Market share
Market share is defined as companies sales as a percentage of total sales volume in a specific
industry, market or product area. In the local region, Qantas managed to outweigh its competitor by
gaining a toll of 65% compared to its competitor. Evidently this shows Qantas is the number one
preferred airlines compared to other competitor airlines like Virgin, Tiger Airways and Emirates
airlines. However the situation is not the same in South East Asian region as Qantas only managed
to obtain about 15% of market share compared to likes of Air Asia who leads the market share with
60% in this region. Conversely, this is not a concern for the airlines as the airlines managed to
generate revenue of 5 billion dollars, with a predicted passenger growth of 4.9% which is equivalent
to 2.9 billion passengers by 2034.
Service quality
Service quality is referred to a valuation of how good a delivered service meets the customer's
expectation. Upper management

Group Case: JetBlue IPO Valuation Finance 6806, Fall 2014 Abrar Khayyat Rajesh Maraj Veronica
Paez November 10, 2014
Problem Statement
Only two years in existence, Jet Blue decided to become a public company and issue an initial
public offering. Jet Blue's decision came in 2002, just as the airline industry experienced a
substantial downturn following the terrorist attacks of September 2011. Despite these challenges, Jet
Blue remained profitable and experienced aggressive growth. In order to support this enormous
growth and offset portfolio losses, the public offering seemed to be best course of action.
Jet Blue decided its IPO price should be in the range of $22–$24 per share and communicated this to
the investment community. The underwriting team at Morgan Stanley forecasted excess demand
from investors for the 5.5 million shares of the Jet Blue IPO, and subsequently filed for an increase
in the share price to a new range of $25 to $26 per share. After raising the stock price, Jet Blue and
Morgan Stanley felt that there was still tremendous demand and became worried of that the share
price was still too low. Management became concerned and fragmented opinions surfaced on how to
proceed. The US economy remained stagnant and the airline industry was especially hit hard; failing
to offer the share price at an equilibrium price could potentially hamper Jet Blue's access to the
capital markets in the future and affect the market value of the company.

The initial stage of the marketing mix should be able to identify the business's product, where in this
case would be the seats that are being sold by British Airways as the main product and then other

How The 21st Century Defines Corporate Social...
Introduction
The objective of this research paper is to describe how the 21St Century defines corporate social
responsibility in relation with the triple bottom line concept, guiding the airline industry into
becoming a forward–thinking industry embedding sustainability into their core of business
operations to create shared value for business and society. I will define corporate social
responsibility and areas of social responsibility in the airline industry at the beginning of the paper
and proceed with how it ties into the bottom line concept. Next, I will give brief examples of airlines
such as JetBlue Airways, and British Airways how they apply these concepts into their mission. In
conclusion, I will express my own thoughts about how customers and employees have more choices
from the industries than they had in the past. They are more aware of the ethical and environmental
stance of todays' industries.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CRM)
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to business practices involving initiatives that benefit
society (Businessnewsdailycom, 2016). CSR may also be referred to as "corporate citizenship" and
can involve incurring short–term cost that do not provide an immediate financial benefit to the
company, but instead promote positive social and environmental change (Root, 2007).
The airline industries faces many responsibilities. The airline industry rely heavily on it's decision
making process due to its major concern, which is

Airways as an example to illustrate this change had on the industry as a whole. This essay will
attempt to show how the airline industry and British Airways in particular coped with thesee change
and how neoliberalism thinking allowed and supported this fundamental change to happen.
Critical analysis of external and internal environment using strategy tools has also been considered.
This essay will outline the fundementals of globalism as well as Neoliberalism, the political thinking
behind it. The research includes a review of academic books, journals, articles and websites. It also

My Passion For Medicine
Caring for a child in their moment of need is just one of the countless times when I felt for certain
medicine is my calling. Through volunteering as an emergency room technician and witnessing my
grandfather's decline in health, I realized that I am both passionate and enamored with medicine. I
find myself time and time again, inspired and exhilarated to observe and work with doctors, nurses,
and support staff to help people in their time of need.
My passion for medicine developed starting in the eighth grade. I received a call from my mother
saying my grandfather was being rushed to the emergency room. The doctors explained that he had
severe acute pancreatitis and was being rushed to surgery. As soon as I arrived my grandfather was
being taken into surgery. The feelings of helplessness and despair loomed over me not knowing if he
was going to survive the surgery. He spent over nine months in the intensive care unit in and out of
surgery as well as another year in and out of the hospital. After witnessing my grandfather's health
plunge it lead me to realize I want to be able to care for people and their families. Seeing the sick
and injured in the hospital made me want to take action, I wanted to make an impact and help these
people. From that point on I made a promise to myself to help others and to leave a positive impact
on them.

A new entrant to the airline industry does not have any trouble with their distribution channels, as
the only distribution required is that of marketing their service, which is open to any company who
wishes to do so.
In the case of Virgin Blue there was no cost disadvantage because Virgin Atlantic had been
operating for many years and so the company was aware of how to operate an airline business and
Qantas did not have a great deal of advantage over them in the industry. Unfortunately n the airline
industry any one who wishes to enter is required to invest a great deal of money, as it is an
expensive industry. The economies of scale and capital requirements may deter new business who
are just starting to enter but an existing business such as the Virgin empire are able to invest the
money into starting out in the airline industry in Australia.
The biggest challenge facing any new entrants and Virgin Blue is competing with the brand
identification of Qantas and the following that they have from the Australian public. When Virgin
Blue first entered the market they were also competing with Ansett for customers and since the
collapse of Ansett, Virgin Blue and Qantas had to compete for their customers. Qantas has

Jetblue Airways And Azul Brazilian Airlines
David Neeleman founded the Jetblue Airline Company in February 1999, under the name "NewAir."
David G. Neeleman is a Brazilian–American entrepreneur who has founded three commercial
airlines; Morris Air, JetBlue Airways and Azul Brazilian Airlines. In April, JetBlue placed a $4
billion order with Airbus Industries for up 75 new A320 aircraft, and commences leasing
arrangements for another eight aircraft. In July, JetBlue reveals that all its aircraft will offer 24
channels of live satellite television at every seat, a first for the airline industry. In September,
JetBlue receives an unprecedented exemption for 75 take–off and landing slots at John F. Kennedy
International Airport (JFK). On December 4th 1999 JetBlue takes delivery of its first Airbus A320
aircraft. Several of JetBlue 's executives, including Neeleman, are former Southwest Airlines
employees. JetBlue started by following Southwest 's approach of offering low–cost travel, but
sought to distinguish itself by its amenities, such as in–flight entertainment, TV at every seat and
Sirius satellite radio. JetBlue was one of only a few U.S. airlines that made a profit during the sharp
downturn in airline travel following the September 11, 2001 attacks. In October 2005, JetBlue 's
quarterly profit had plunged from US$8.1 million to $2.7 million largely due to rising fuel costs.

The product or service offered by a firm is to a large extent determined by the market segment the
firm wants to capture. And in most cases, when the firm knows what segment of the market they
want to capture, it makes the decision of their product offering easier. A good way to further explain
this would be to consider two movie theaters one operating near a university campus and one
located in the down town part of the city, the cinema close to the school would easily identify their
market as student and offer price ranges and viewing times that are tailored to suit the lifestyle of a
student while the cinema operating downtown might not be incline to pursue that same strategy they
can price their can decide to sell their tickets at a higher price because they are not targeting the
same markets. Although this paper isn't about movies, the example above I hope show how the

Summary of the Research: Treatment of Post-stroke...
In their study titled Treatment of post–stroke dysphagia with repetitive transcranial magnetic
stimulation, Khedr, Abo–Elfetoh and Rothwell (2009) aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential
of rTMS over the esophageal motor cortex for treating post–stroke dysphagia. The authors rationale
for the purpose of this study is that dysphagia often follows a stroke. Due to the numerous and
potential grave effects of dysphagia, developing best practices which ameliorate the condition has
been long considered a priority.
Twenty–six patients with dysphagia resulting from stroke participated in this study. All patients
suffered monohemispheric stroke and were assigned randomly to treatment and sham treatment
groups. Fourteen patients were assigned to the treatment group and twelve patients were assigned to
the sham treatment group. Patients received repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
treatment over the esophageal motor cortex to the affected motor cortex for five consecutive days
with pulses at intensity levels of 120% over their hand motor threshold for 300 pulses. Motor
disability and dysphasia were assessed "before and immediately after the last session and then again
after 1 and 2 months" (p. 155).
The group that received real rTMS treatment demonstrated significantly greater improvement over
the sham treatment group in motor disability and dysphagia symptoms. Improvements were seen in
dysphagia score, and Barthel index scores. These improvements were

Airline Industry : Southwest Airlines
The Airline industry has been around for decades, but in the long run it is still a pretty new type of
industry. Therefore, there are still growing pains that need to be worked out. There are many small
companies, but the major Southwest competitors are Delta/Northwest, Continental/United, JetBlue,
and Allegiant.
Southwest continues to have to fight for consumers against these airlines. There are a few strategies
being implemented by competitors that Southwest Airlines needs to be concerned about. One major
recent strategy is that large companies are merging to create even large conglomerates. These
mergers have given those companies some extra advantage when it comes to certain regional
markets. They don't have a monopoly but their hold on consumers in an area rises tremendously.
Also, it allows them to control the fare prices in regions where they are the majority. Southwest
Airlines could lose consumers to some of these mega companies because they may offer more flight
times on certain routes. Consumers may be willing to pay more if times work better for them.
However, these mergers could be detrimental because consumers like to have options and the prices
they offer may be too high.
The strategies being offered by smaller companies are much different than the merger companies.
The small companies are implementing low fare price strategies. These companies are directly
competing with Southwest Airlines' low price strategy. Southwest could lose consumers to other

Pharyngeal Phase
Pharyngeal Phase Despite the fact that the pharyngeal phase of swallowing is the most complex,
from start to finish the entire phase takes less than one second. Sensory receptors at the back of the
tongue and anterior faucial pillars are stimulated by the sensation of the bolus, and trigger the
pharyngeal phase of swallowing. Additionally, the oropharynx detects and relays sensation
information related to the viscosity and consistency of the bolus, which then influences the
physiology of the pharyngeal swallow. Nevertheless, the swallow is also under volitional control, as
one can be triggered without stimulation to the posterior oral structures (Logemann 1997; Corbin–

During quiet breathing, the diaphragm contracts upon inhalation, causing the abdomen to depress
and the ribcage to expand. Due to the pleural connection between the ribcage and the lungs, the
expansion of the ribcage forces the lungs to expand as well. As the volume of the lungs increases, air
rushes in through diffusion. Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes, causing the ribcage and lungs
to recoil without muscular assistance. Air rushes back out of the lungs, exiting through the mouth
and nose.
Forced breathing (such as during exercise) and speech breathing require greater muscle involvement
for both the inhalation and exhalation portions of the respiratory cycle. Speech breathing involves
rapid, forceful inspirations, and proportionally less time is spent inhaling than spent exhaling
(Owens, Metz, & Farinella, 2011). The muscles of forced inhalation (see Appendix B) assist by
increasing the size of the thoracic cavity, allowing more air to enter the lungs. In addition, the
muscles of forced inhalation contribute to the "checking" action that maintains support of the
ribcage, preventing collapse (Taylor, 1960). The muscles of forced exhalation (see Appendix B)
force the diaphragm upward, compressing the ribs, and thereby allowing the speaker to control the
flow of air necessary for

Assignment 2: Mergers and Acquisitions
Look up at the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, no it really is a plain. All across the United States and all
over the world there are a number of companies that are constantly seeking to expand each by a
number of different means; some companies are going public, others are buying assets from other
companies, and some companies are merging. Mergers happen every day whether we realize it or

complicated and also can be quite simple one company seeks to expand and another cease to

Changing the Culture at British Airways Essay
1. What was life like at "old" British Airways?
Employees were embarrassed to mention they worked for the company.
British Airways stumbled into its 1979 state of inefficiency in large part because of its history and
culture.
British Airways faced the worst crisis in its history in the late 1970's early 1980's.
Unless they took immediate action they were heading for a loss of at least £100 million within that
present financial year.
They faced the potential that by that following April they had losses close to £250 million in two
years.
A special bulletin was written by then chief executive Roy Watts issued to all staff stating the

3. What were the critical factors in the successful transformation?
King launched their Survival plan– "tough, unpalatable and immediate measures" to stem the
spiraling losses and save the airline from bankruptcy. The radical steps included reducing staff
numbers from 52,000 to 43,000, or 20 percent, in just nine months; freezing pay increases for a
year; and closing 16 routes, eight on–line stations, and two engineering bases. It also dictated halting
cargo–only services and selling the fleet, and inflicting massive cuts upon offices, administrative
services, and staff clubs.
In June of 1982, BA management appended the Survival plan to accommodate the reduction of
another 7,000 staff, which would eventually bring the total employees down from about 42,000 to
nearly 35,000. BA accomplished its reductions through voluntary measures, offering such generous
severance that they ended up with more volunteers than necessary. In total, the airline dished out
some £150 million in severance pay. Between 1981 and 1983, BA reduced its staff by about a
quarter.
On September 13, 1982, King relieved its 36–year–old advertising account was being replaced by
Saatchi & Saatchi. One of the biggest account changes in British history, it was King's way of
making a clear statement that the BA direction had changed.

How Does Predictive Use Finances Can Determine The End...
One of the most beautiful places in the world is the country of Thailand. While one could
conceivably spend months attempting to see all that it has to offer, a dream vacation of 14 days in 10
years, or even 15 years' time, is planned now in order to establish if the cost change over time can
contribute to the desire to visit this wonderful country or if it will prove to be too financially
strenuous for one person to undertake. The examination lists an outline of require funds at the
current market price and reviews how much money would be required to be saved in a 10 percent

British Airways: Largest Airline in the UK
British Airways (BA) is the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom, based in Waterside, near its
main hub at London Heathrow Airport. It is the largest airline in the UK based on fleet size,
international flights and international destinations and second largest measured by passengers
carried, behind easyJet.
The British Airways Board was established in 1971 to control the two nationalised airline
corporations, BOAC and BEA, and two smaller, regional airlines, Cambrian Airways, from Cardiff,
and Northeast Airlines, from Newcastle upon Tyne. On 31 March 1974, all four companies were
merged to form British Airways. After almost 13 years as a state company, that was sold in February

In 1981, the airline was instructed to prepare for privatisation by the Conservative government. Sir
John King, later Lord King, was appointed Chairman, charged with bringing the airline back into
profitability. King was credited with transforming the loss–making giant into one of the most
profitable air carriers in the world, while many other large airlines struggled.[9] The flag carrier was
privatised and was floated on the London Stock Exchange in February 1987.[10] In July 1987,
British Airways effected the takeover of Britain 's "second" airline, British Caledonian.[11]
The formation of Richard Branson 's Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984 created a strong competitor for
BA. In 1993, the intense rivalry between British Airways and Virgin Atlantic culminated in the
former being sued for libel arising from claims and counter claims over a "dirty tricks" campaign by
BA against Virgin. British Airways ' campaign against Virgin included poaching Virgin Atlantic
customers, tampering with private files belonging to Virgin and PR undermining the reputation in
the City. Following a libel case, British Airways agreed to pay £110,000 damages to Virgin (and
£500,000 to Branson) and £3 million legal costs causing BA management to apologise
"unreservedly" for the alleged "dirty tricks" campaign. An action filed in the US in 1993 by Virgin

communication and a new business.
When the reorganization of the airlines in operation occurred, the network of scheduled flights from
fixed itineraries comprehensive and competitive race began in improving the services they offered,
such as trained attendants to deal effectively with passengers during flights. Leaning on the technical
evolution and the race of modernization and progress, service airline has managed to prevail and

However, during this time a number of smaller UK airline companies had started their operations, so
in 1935, these airlines merged to form the original privately owned British Airways Ltd. The British
Government in 1939 nationalized the airlines and after the Second World War, the airlines were
combined to form the British Airways in 1974 (2006b). The driving factor behind alliances is long–
term profitability, and their formation tends to be for strategic reasons, such as accessing larger
markets, establishing global brand loyalty and building hub–to–hub traffic (1998). This move is
advantageous for the airline to service more passengers and establish market reputation. Alliances or
merges are part their strategic management plan, as being part of the strategy formulation and
implementation. Strategy formulation and implementation is an on–going, never–ending, integrated
process requiring continuous reassessment and reformation, is dynamic, and involves a complex
pattern of actions and reactions ( 2006). Being dynamic, airlines tend to always innovate and
improve their actions to further enhance the quality of their service. In addition, another way for the

A Case Study On Southwest And Will Address Acquisitions
Mergers and acquisitions have always been around and have been popular in the United States for
decades. It has been said that that mergers and acquisitions have contributed to the reconstruction of
businesses during the 80's and 90's. The following is an analysis of a case study on Southwest and
will address acquisitions, mergers, and restructuring. Acquisitions are popular in the United States
and there are many reasons why a company decides to acquire another company. Companies will
decide to acquire a business in order to increase market power. Market power happens when a
company sells its good or services above competitive levels. If a company attains a high market
power, it can become a leader (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2015). Acquisitions that are "competing
in the same industry as the acquiring firm is called a Horizontal acquisitions" Horizontal
acquisitions also increase a company's market power. According to the class textbook, horizontal
acquisition are a result in higher performance when a company have similar characteristics (Hitt,

Airway Assesment Of The Difficult Airway Before Manipulation
CHAPTER III
AIRWAY ASSESMENT IN TRAUMA PATIENTS Identification of the difficult airway before
manipulation is the Holy Grail of clinical management. It is the first step in preparing for patient
care. Selection of airway devices, techniques, and procedures all pivot on airway evaluation (Carin,
2008). Preoperative examination of the airway is essential. Identification of patients with a
potentially difficult airway before anesthesia allows time to plan an appropriate anesthetic
technique. Previous anesthetic records should always be consulted. However, a past record of
normal tracheal intubation is no guarantee against difficulty on subsequent occasions as airway
anatomy can be altered as in trauma affecting the airway. The presence of stridor or hoarse voice is
warning sign for the anesthetist. As it is impossible to identify all patients with a difficult airway
during preoperative assessment, the anesthetist must be prepared to manage the unexpected difficult
laryngoscopy (Alan et al,. 2001).
 Historical Indicators of Airway Difficulty: The intent of obtaining an airway history is to elicit
previously known factors indicating that airway management has been (and likely will be) difficult.
Any patient who is awake and capable of coherent conversation should be asked about prior
intubation and ventilation successes or failures. Some patients possess a Medic Alert bracelet
indicating a history of difficult intubation or ventilation and this can be useful in obtunded

ACU Paramedic

  • 1. ACU Paramedic Assessment 1 – Written Assignment: Part B A major component of the care Paramedics provide is the assessment of a patient's physical status, which is the ground for any further treatment. The assessment method that an Advanced Care Paramedic follows is a systematic assessment referred to as the Primary Survey. The aim of this fundamental assessment is to give an initial diagnosis of the patient as well as identifying any imminent threats to the patient. This assessment is used so that a Paramedic can decide how to treat the patient while staying within the boundaries of their scope of practice. Throughout this essay the concept of a primary survey within the scope of practice of an Advanced Care Paramedic will be understood. Additionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pulse is an indication of an individual's heart rate. When checking for a pulse in the primary survey, begin with palpating the patient's radial or carotid artery (Basic Patient Care 2012, p. 50). This may reveal a normal (60–100 beats/min), tachycardia (<100 beats/min), bradycardia (> 60 beats/min) or asystole heart rate. Additionally, the capillary refill may also provide details about a patient's cardiovascular status. This is performed by applying pressure to the nail bed and calculating the time it to takes to refill to a normal color, which should take no more then a few seconds otherwise suggesting capillary closure (Mick J Sanders, 2012, p. 1400). An additional accessory to Circulation is Hemorrhages, these involve more through examinations of the pulse, blood pressure and warmth of peripheries of patients. Additionally, you must thoroughly look for indication of bleeding, specifically in the areas around the chest, abdomen and externally seen by the eye. Upon finishing the danger, response and circulation components of the primary survey the next step is the assessment and maintenance of a patient's airway. This is a crucial stage as a clear airway allows for air to move in and out of the lungs (Primary Survey Airway Evaluation, 2015). Patients in particular may have less ability to maintain their airway, including the tongue, or liquids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Paramedic Medical Skills Paramedic clinical skill demonstration As part of assessment for CSB330, students worked in small groups to demonstrate and record the correct application of ambulance equipment and perform five clinical skills. These skills were: Neann Immobilisation Extrication Jacket (NIEJ), Carbon Traction Emergency Medical Services (CT–EMS) traction splint, Pelvic Circumferential Compression Device (SAM pelvic sling), Oropharyngeal airway (OPA) and Nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) and Stiffneck cervical collar/soft neck collar. The development of foundational skills early in the paramedic science degree is important, as these skills need to be performed competently during clinical placement. An NPA can be used in a patient who may not be able to have an OPA inserted due to intact gag reflex, trismus or oral trauma (QAS CPP). However, if the patient has potential or known basal skull fractures, an NPA cannot proceed to be inserted, otherwise further damage can be caused (PG, IM). • 5. Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) A recently graduated working paramedic is referred to as an Advanced Care Paramedic, or an ACP. An ACP follows a clinical structure, the first aspect of the format is called a primary survey which collects all emergency patient information. This compulsory technique aims to identify and control catastrophic medical events to ensure patients have the best outcome possible (Hodegetts et al., 2011). When conducting a primary survey of a patient an ACP would follow the basic structure of danger, response, airway, breathing and circulation; usually shortened into the acronym DRABC (Woo, 2000). To begin the primary survey, DRABC should be started as soon as possible (QAS reference). It is crucial for effective, emergency response to patients suffering ... Under Paramedics Australasia a paramedic is a health professional that provides emergency medical treatment and assessment, rapid patient response in an out–of–hospital setting (Paramedics.org, 2016) It is important for paramedics not to exceed their scope of practice as the patient outcome is significantly decreased, a multidisciplinary view on the care being provided is negatively affected which in turn ensures non–informed decisions are being made for the patient unknowingly (Paramedics.org, 2011). If a graduated paramedic exceeds their scope of practice, patient outcomes become substandard to the care they could provide within their scope of practise (Fitzgerald, ... What, if any, key mistakes were made? –Dan failed to fully utilize high profile networks of Scott and Henry, who were both graduates of an Ivy League School (Did Scott graduate from Ivy League School?). Also, Dan did not try to reach out to his network he established while he was buying and selling airplanes. Even if there was no one interested in their direct network, perhaps someone in their network knew someone who might be interested. Without a specific funding plan, they quickly burn out the money they raised even before they fulfilled the need of $1.5 million. 2. Evaluate Dan's evolving relationships with Scott and Henry. What "principles of best practices" did he overlook? –Dan had an excellent working relationship with Scott. Both of them believed in the future of Florida Air and worked for 10–12 hours a day –On the other hand, Dan had a rocky relationship with Henry. Henry showed little dedication and did not contribute much. He refused to do any work himself but preferred to hire a third party to do work for him. PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT OF INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES The airline industry, like many other industries, is increasingly exposed to competition. Increased competition has two effects on firms: it creates downward pressures on output prices, and it creates incentives for improving productivity and efficiency. The study concluded that increased competition in international air transport markets has put pressures on carriers' ability to raise prices. However input prices, like labor, fuel, materials, flight equipment, ground property and equipment have been increasing. They also demonstrated that airlines have made tremendous effort to improve efficiency to counteract such trends, yet large fluctuations in profitability are still an ongoing reality. • 12. Southwest Airlines And The State Of Texas Back in March of 1967, Southwest Airlines was first founded under a different name, Air Southwest Company, by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher . With his own funds of $500 thousand, Kelleher filed an application with the Texas Aeronautics Commission for the right to fly commercial airplanes in the state of Texas. In February 20th of 1968, the Texas Aeronautics Commission voted unanimously, granting Air Southwest a certificate of public convenience and necessity. The following day, Braniff, Trans Texas (later known as Texas International), and Continental Airlines obtained a restraining order from Travis County District, prohibiting the certificate to be delivered to Air Southwest Company . Air Southwest Company tried to file appeal with the Austin State District Court and the Third Court of Civil Appeals. Both courts ruled against Air Southwest, forcing Herb Kelleher to appeal with the Texas Supreme Court. This can affect the American Airlines company in the competitive airline industry because if some foreign governments deny the rights to U.S. air carriers to carry passengers beyond designated cities, the loyal customers of American Airlines would choose another airline that would be accepted by foreign governments, which will ultimately decrease American Airline ticket sales followed by a decrease in profits. 2. Competition Within The Airline Industry A key characteristic of an oligopoly is limited competition, collusion and interdependence within firms. In recent times, we have seen sworn public enemies colluding privately. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic coming together to fix the passenger fee for 'fuel surcharge' to the flier. The first to investigate were the Office for Fair Trade and after much investigation, the trial broke down on 10 th May 2010 due to discovery of certain e–mails. The most common obstruction of the airway is the tongue. This usually occurs when the patient has become unconscious secondary to another cause such as intoxication, low blood sugar, or trauma. While tongue obstruction of the airway can have deadly results, it can be easily solved by re–positioning the airway using the either the jaw thrust maneuver if trauma is suspected, or the head–tilt chin–lift if no trauma is suspected. Also if the patient is unconscious and has no gag reflex you can use an oropharyngeal airway to hold the tongue up and out of the airway. Patients who are unresponsive for various reasons such as cardiac arrest, alcohol intoxication, or low blood sugar can aspirate stomach contents due to the loss of their ability to protect their own airway. Aspiration can severely impede the alveoli's ability to exchange gases. The patient can suffocate if action is not taken promptly. The aspiration may also cause pneumonia or other types of infections that can be potentially deadly for the patient. This is one of the reasons why managing and controlling n unconscious patient's airway is so crucial during pre–hospital care. Another critical respiratory emergency is a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can be caused by a blood clot, by an air bubble, by a large foreign body in the circulatory system such as a catheter shear, or in rare cases by amniotic fluid in pregnant females. Whatever the cause of the embolism, the results can have the same deadly consequences. Case Study : Jetblue Ipo Valuation Finance Group Case: JetBlue IPO Valuation Finance 6806, Fall 2014 Abrar Khayyat Rajesh Maraj Veronica Paez November 10, 2014 Problem Statement Only two years in existence, Jet Blue decided to become a public company and issue an initial public offering. Jet Blue's decision came in 2002, just as the airline industry experienced a substantial downturn following the terrorist attacks of September 2011. Despite these challenges, Jet Blue remained profitable and experienced aggressive growth. In order to support this enormous growth and offset portfolio losses, the public offering seemed to be best course of action. Jet Blue decided its IPO price should be in the range of $22–$24 per share and communicated this to the investment community. The underwriting team at Morgan Stanley forecasted excess demand from investors for the 5.5 million shares of the Jet Blue IPO, and subsequently filed for an increase in the share price to a new range of $25 to $26 per share. After raising the stock price, Jet Blue and Morgan Stanley felt that there was still tremendous demand and became worried of that the share price was still too low. Management became concerned and fragmented opinions surfaced on how to proceed. The US economy remained stagnant and the airline industry was especially hit hard; failing to offer the share price at an equilibrium price could potentially hamper Jet Blue's access to the capital markets in the future and affect the market value of the company. ... Introduction The objective of this research paper is to describe how the 21St Century defines corporate social responsibility in relation with the triple bottom line concept, guiding the airline industry into becoming a forward–thinking industry embedding sustainability into their core of business operations to create shared value for business and society. I will define corporate social responsibility and areas of social responsibility in the airline industry at the beginning of the paper and proceed with how it ties into the bottom line concept. Next, I will give brief examples of airlines such as JetBlue Airways, and British Airways how they apply these concepts into their mission. In conclusion, I will express my own thoughts about how customers and employees have more choices from the industries than they had in the past. They are more aware of the ethical and environmental stance of todays' industries. Corporate Social Responsibility (CRM) Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to business practices involving initiatives that benefit society (Businessnewsdailycom, 2016). CSR may also be referred to as "corporate citizenship" and can involve incurring short–term cost that do not provide an immediate financial benefit to the company, but instead promote positive social and environmental change (Root, 2007). Through volunteering as an emergency room technician and witnessing my grandfather's decline in health, I realized that I am both passionate and enamored with medicine. I find myself time and time again, inspired and exhilarated to observe and work with doctors, nurses, and support staff to help people in their time of need. My passion for medicine developed starting in the eighth grade. I received a call from my mother saying my grandfather was being rushed to the emergency room. The doctors explained that he had severe acute pancreatitis and was being rushed to surgery. As soon as I arrived my grandfather was being taken into surgery. The feelings of helplessness and despair loomed over me not knowing if he was going to survive the surgery. He spent over nine months in the intensive care unit in and out of surgery as well as another year in and out of the hospital. After witnessing my grandfather's health plunge it lead me to realize I want to be able to care for people and their families. Seeing the sick and injured in the hospital made me want to take action, I wanted to make an impact and help these people. From that point on I made a promise to myself to help others and to leave a positive impact on them. BANKOLE MBAA 523 March 8TH, 2015 EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION The product or service offered by a firm is to a large extent determined by the market segment the firm wants to capture. And in most cases, when the firm knows what segment of the market they want to capture, it makes the decision of their product offering easier. A good way to further explain this would be to consider two movie theaters one operating near a university campus and one located in the down town part of the city, the cinema close to the school would easily identify their market as student and offer price ranges and viewing times that are tailored to suit the lifestyle of a student while the cinema operating downtown might not be incline to pursue that same strategy they can price their can decide to sell their tickets at a higher price because they are not targeting the same markets. Although this paper isn't about movies, the example above I hope show how the segments the company is targeting sometimes helps determine the product the company offers. In their study titled Treatment of post–stroke dysphagia with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, Khedr, Abo–Elfetoh and Rothwell (2009) aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of rTMS over the esophageal motor cortex for treating post–stroke dysphagia. The authors rationale for the purpose of this study is that dysphagia often follows a stroke. Due to the numerous and potential grave effects of dysphagia, developing best practices which ameliorate the condition has been long considered a priority. Twenty–six patients with dysphagia resulting from stroke participated in this study. All patients suffered monohemispheric stroke and were assigned randomly to treatment and sham treatment groups. Fourteen patients were assigned to the treatment group and twelve patients were assigned to the sham treatment group. Patients received repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment over the esophageal motor cortex to the affected motor cortex for five consecutive days with pulses at intensity levels of 120% over their hand motor threshold for 300 pulses. Motor disability and dysphasia were assessed "before and immediately after the last session and then again after 1 and 2 months" (p. 155). • 48. Airline Industry : Southwest Airlines The Airline industry has been around for decades, but in the long run it is still a pretty new type of industry. Therefore, there are still growing pains that need to be worked out. There are many small companies, but the major Southwest competitors are Delta/Northwest, Continental/United, JetBlue, and Allegiant. Southwest continues to have to fight for consumers against these airlines. There are a few strategies being implemented by competitors that Southwest Airlines needs to be concerned about. One major recent strategy is that large companies are merging to create even large conglomerates. These mergers have given those companies some extra advantage when it comes to certain regional markets. They don't have a monopoly but their hold on consumers in an area rises tremendously. Also, it allows them to control the fare prices in regions where they are the majority. Southwest Airlines could lose consumers to some of these mega companies because they may offer more flight times on certain routes. Consumers may be willing to pay more if times work better for them. However, these mergers could be detrimental because consumers like to have options and the prices they offer may be too high. The strategies being offered by smaller companies are much different than the merger companies. The small companies are implementing low fare price strategies. These companies are directly competing with Southwest Airlines' low price strategy. Southwest could lose consumers to other similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sensory receptors at the back of the tongue and anterior faucial pillars are stimulated by the sensation of the bolus, and trigger the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. Additionally, the oropharynx detects and relays sensation information related to the viscosity and consistency of the bolus, which then influences the physiology of the pharyngeal swallow. Nevertheless, the swallow is also under volitional control, as one can be triggered without stimulation to the posterior oral structures (Logemann 1997; Corbin– Lewis, Liss, & Sciortino, 2005). During quiet breathing, the diaphragm contracts upon inhalation, causing the abdomen to depress and the ribcage to expand. Due to the pleural connection between the ribcage and the lungs, the expansion of the ribcage forces the lungs to expand as well. As the volume of the lungs increases, air rushes in through diffusion. Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes, causing the ribcage and lungs to recoil without muscular assistance. Air rushes back out of the lungs, exiting through the mouth and nose. Forced breathing (such as during exercise) and speech breathing require greater muscle involvement for both the inhalation and exhalation portions of the respiratory cycle. Speech breathing involves rapid, forceful inspirations, and proportionally less time is spent inhaling than spent exhaling (Owens, Metz, & Farinella, 2011). The muscles of forced inhalation (see Appendix B) assist by increasing the size of the thoracic cavity, allowing more air to enter the lungs. In addition, the muscles of forced inhalation contribute to the "checking" action that maintains support of the ribcage, preventing collapse (Taylor, 1960). The muscles of forced exhalation (see Appendix B) force the diaphragm upward, compressing the ribs, and thereby allowing the speaker to control the flow of air necessary for ... British Airways stumbled into its 1979 state of inefficiency in large part because of its history and culture. British Airways faced the worst crisis in its history in the late 1970's early 1980's. Unless they took immediate action they were heading for a loss of at least £100 million within that present financial year. They faced the potential that by that following April they had losses close to £250 million in two years. King launched their Survival plan– "tough, unpalatable and immediate measures" to stem the spiraling losses and save the airline from bankruptcy. The radical steps included reducing staff numbers from 52,000 to 43,000, or 20 percent, in just nine months; freezing pay increases for a year; and closing 16 routes, eight on–line stations, and two engineering bases. It also dictated halting cargo–only services and selling the fleet, and inflicting massive cuts upon offices, administrative services, and staff clubs. In June of 1982, BA management appended the Survival plan to accommodate the reduction of another 7,000 staff, which would eventually bring the total employees down from about 42,000 to nearly 35,000. BA accomplished its reductions through voluntary measures, offering such generous severance that they ended up with more volunteers than necessary. It is the largest airline in the UK based on fleet size, international flights and international destinations and second largest measured by passengers carried, behind easyJet. The British Airways Board was established in 1971 to control the two nationalised airline corporations, BOAC and BEA, and two smaller, regional airlines, Cambrian Airways, from Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines, from Newcastle upon Tyne. On 31 March 1974, all four companies were merged to form British Airways. After almost 13 years as a state company, that was sold in February 1987 as part of a privatisation plan by the ... Sir John King, later Lord King, was appointed Chairman, charged with bringing the airline back into profitability. King was credited with transforming the loss–making giant into one of the most profitable air carriers in the world, while many other large airlines struggled.[9] The flag carrier was privatised and was floated on the London Stock Exchange in February 1987.[10] In July 1987, British Airways effected the takeover of Britain 's "second" airline, British Caledonian.[11] The formation of Richard Branson 's Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984 created a strong competitor for BA. In 1993, the intense rivalry between British Airways and Virgin Atlantic culminated in the former being sued for libel arising from claims and counter claims over a "dirty tricks" campaign by BA against Virgin. British Airways ' campaign against Virgin included poaching Virgin Atlantic customers, tampering with private files belonging to Virgin and PR undermining the reputation in the City. Following a libel case, British Airways agreed to pay £110,000 damages to Virgin (and £500,000 to Branson) and £3 million legal costs causing BA management to apologise "unreservedly" for the alleged "dirty tricks" campaign. I remembered I had not brought any of my money I was going to use in New York. I thought I would not be able to buy any chocolate or snow globes to add to my collection. Luckily this wasn't a problem, because I remembered my dad owned me twenty bucks. He owed me twenty bucks because he borrowed it from me once to pay the grass cutter, because he had forgotten to get money from the bank. I know it wasn't a lot, but I could still by a cheap ten dollar snow globe form a kiosk at the mall. As I was watching a movie, it paused for an announcement. The pilot was telling us that our departure would be delayed. When I heard this I started to cry. My brother beat me up as he always does when he sees me cry, so I stopped. Finally after three hours we arrived to the JFK International Airport. When we arrived to the airport we had a hard time finding our aunts and cousins that were suppose to be there to pick us up. We were expecting to see two tall men and a short lady. So we spent two hours searching for them around the airport. It has been said that that mergers and acquisitions have contributed to the reconstruction of businesses during the 80's and 90's. The following is an analysis of a case study on Southwest and will address acquisitions, mergers, and restructuring. Acquisitions are popular in the United States and there are many reasons why a company decides to acquire another company. Companies will decide to acquire a business in order to increase market power. Market power happens when a company sells its good or services above competitive levels. If a company attains a high market power, it can become a leader (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2015). Acquisitions that are "competing in the same industry as the acquiring firm is called a Horizontal acquisitions" Horizontal acquisitions also increase a company's market power. • 83. Airway Assesment Of The Difficult Airway Before Manipulation CHAPTER III AIRWAY ASSESMENT IN TRAUMA PATIENTS Identification of the difficult airway before manipulation is the Holy Grail of clinical management. It is the first step in preparing for patient care. Selection of airway devices, techniques, and procedures all pivot on airway evaluation (Carin, 2008). Preoperative examination of the airway is essential. Identification of patients with a potentially difficult airway before anesthesia allows time to plan an appropriate anesthetic technique. Previous anesthetic records should always be consulted. However, a past record of normal tracheal intubation is no guarantee against difficulty on subsequent occasions as airway anatomy can be altered as in trauma affecting the airway. The presence of stridor or hoarse voice is warning sign for the anesthetist. As it is impossible to identify all patients with a difficult airway during preoperative assessment, the anesthetist must be prepared to manage the unexpected difficult laryngoscopy (Alan et al,. 2001).  Historical Indicators of Airway Difficulty: The intent of obtaining an airway history is to elicit previously known factors indicating that airway management has been (and likely will be) difficult. Any patient who is awake and capable of coherent conversation should be asked about prior intubation and ventilation successes or failures. Some patients possess a Medic Alert bracelet indicating a history of difficult intubation or ventilation and this can be useful in obtunded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
