Format: Magazine
I am looking to produce a new indie/rock magazine with other sub genres of indie pop and lo-fi. I
will create a front cover a double page spread as part of a project to launch the new magazine
Shutters I will be producing.
I am currently looking at creating my magazine as a monthly copy on hardback to start off with in
year one and then look into expanding the hardback sales to areas such as Scotland and online
digital download via app store and other distributors. I will be using the typical magazine
dimensions of 8 3⁄8” x 10 7⁄8.
Working Title:
My working title is Off The Radar. I have chosen this name because I would like to find some
rock/indie artists and bands that have not yet been discovered by the mainstream music
magazines and radio stations especially if they haven’t been signed by a record label. I gained
inspiration from the mood board that I had created. I thought the best colour scheme for this
magazine would be red and black. This is similar to the music magazines I have been inspired by
such as NME Q and fro this idea Kerrang! I need the magazine to look professional and match the
quality of NME and Q so that I can attract a target audience for releasing professional monthly
music magazine.
Genre:
As mentioned previously I am looking to produce a new indie/rock monthly magazine which
focuses on upcoming and establishing British indie artists and bands to help them grow their
reputation and get the media attention they deserve through my magazine. By discovering artist
and bands who have not yet been discovered by record labels or radio stations such as BBC
introducing…
Content:
For my magazine I have been analysing magazines of inspiration like NME and Q to see the
content which they have in their magazines and can attract readers to my new magazine. From
this research I have found out that they include content such as band/artist interviews that have
that `star appeal’ (Richard Dyer) to attract the readers. Not only the star appeal but they also
have exclusive content about upcoming music festivals and gigs that are upcoming and what to
expect from bands and artists the reader may not have heard of before. Interestingly using
secondary research at the mediauk website I have found out that 65.7% of their readers are male
and this relates to adverts inside the magazine such as Dove men care and men’s suit tailors
because their readership is also at 60.9% ABC1 socio economic groups.
Style or Approach:
As this magazine is more of a heavier rock music genre magazine compared to my other proposal
SHUTTERS which is an indie/rock I used magazines such as NME and Q as inspiration for the
colour scheme. For this magazine I find Kerrang! An inspiration with the types of artist and
colour schemes the magazine follows which is black and red. The presentation of each of the
pages has to be professional as well as fit for purpose to the heavy rock genre. I wanted to create
my masthead head as a very simply yet recognisable font style and image to it which will be able
to create the brand identity after year one of producing the magazine.
The software that I will use to create the magazine pages will be Photoshop CS5. I have decided
to use this software because of the wide variety of tools and manipulation you can do to work
easily. Not only the easy use of software but the professional image the magazine pages will
have from using this software is professional standard.
Audience:
From researching into Kerrang! Magazine about the readership figures I have found out that the
most popular age range that purchase the magazine are 15-24 which is 56.1% of the readers. I
will be looking to create content for my magazine so that it attracts this target age group as it
