Unit 30 LO2
Inspiration
 The inspiration behind my new magazine I am going to produce is
an Indie/rock upcoming artist and bands and I have gained
inspiration from reading magazines such as Q and NME. I have
chosen this genre of music because I have a strong passion about
finding new and upcoming bands in the indie rock genre.
 By creating this magazine I hope to gain their band identity and
help find and expose them to new potential listeners who may not
know who they are before reading my magazine.
 I want to help these indie rock bands grow because I know just how
hard it can be to get media attention to help them make new records
and albums.
 For year one I am going o start in London and by issue 12 of 2015 I
hope to have target audience reaching Scotland and in the next
three years improving on the sales each month and become a
market leader in the indie/rock monthly music magazine.

Genre
 Bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian all
started with out any help apart from the support of
online videos and magazine coverage.
 The genre of Indie rock connotes extremely diverse, with
sub-genres that include indie pop, jangle pop and lo-fi,
among others.
 Because Indie rock is a very niche genre and market to
promote it can be very competitive with other magazines
such as NME and Q but with my magazine. I will not be
focusing on the mainstream indie rock bands and more
about those who are just finding their feet in the
business.
Style
 The colour scheme I am going to use for the front cover
of my magazine will be white and red with a blue
background with a red text headline on the top of the
page.
 Following on for the double page spread I am going to
use white as the background colour and black as the text.
I have selected these colours because ‘repeat’ (Steve
Neale – 1980) as it is used in NME and they have been
successful for many years. To replicate the same colour
schemes in NME and my magazine I am going to use the
‘eye dropper’ tool in adobe Photoshop to get this perfect
match to fit my magazine style.
Layout
Instantly by looking at these two
magazines of inspiration from a similar
genre of music I have established that they
both se mid shots as the front cover picture
and a large picture size. I will ‘repeat’ this
shot type to replicate the power and size of
the artist or band on the front cover of the
magazine
By using a mid shot you are able to
look at the clothes they are wearing
and already stereotype them into a
genre of music which they will be
associated with and with my
magazine I want a potential buyer
to look at my magazine that it is an
Indie rock music magazine
From analysing both main
headlines I would prefer mine to
be more of like the Kerrang
magazine because it is a lot
brighter and sands out to the
reader immediately about what the
main story in the magazine will be
about
Strapline
 ‘New music discovered’
 The denotation of my strapline is ‘new music
discovered’ connotes that we have a passion for
“Discovering” new indie music in the U.K. by having
this strapline it grab the attention of the readers and
potential buyers looking to buy a magazine
illustrates what my magazine is about. Therefore
this will hopefully increase sales and brand
popularity of my new music magazine.
Layout
The double page spread of Kerrang Is similar to NME because as they both look into the similar genres of music
they will often take similar ideas from one another i.e. medium shot and colour styles. I believe that medium shots
is the best shot type you can have on a magazine double page spread because the leaders of indie/rock magazines
all have them as their shot type for double page spreads. It biggest appeal would be because it allows the reader to
see what they look like close up and what they also like to wear at the same time.
By using one of the most unique quotes the band artist used from the interview is often used to grab the attention
of the reader and see why and where they said this in the interview. This has been a popular way of editing used by
major magazine double page spreads because it establishes whether the interview was taken seriously by the
artists or interviewer or whether it was fun and would make a good read to see what their childhood was like or
what life is like on the road.
Mood Board – Conclusion
 The reason I have chosen The colours that I will use in
my magazine will hold consistent of red white and the
image background as it is for my front cover of the
magazine. I will have red text for the headline which will
be on the top of the page and spread across the middle of
the page. Hopefully when my magazine becomes more
popular I will be able to cover some of the masthead like
Kerrang and NME do. Red- It is associated with energy,
power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
White- It is associated with purity which is what Shutters
want to be as we produce an honest interview in our
magazine with hard working musicians to get there story
across.

Masthead
 My magazine is called Shutters this has been
inspired by market research I carried out in my LO2
presentation as it was the most popular name chosen
by the audience.
 I believe the best font style for my magazine will be
Lemon milk from dafonts.com because it is very
similar to the style of NME my magazine of
inspiration and carries through the similar genre of
the new indie different looking text which my
magazine focuses on (New music from indie bands
and artists)
Target Readership
 Katz Uses & Gratifications
 With the magazine I will be creating I am looking to:
 Inform and Educate- This is because when you read my
magazine you are able to inform and educate yourself
with information you will not find in any other magazine
with the exclusive interviews.
 Personal Identity- Furthermore you are able to relate and
replicate your role models behaviour and interests to the
band/artist.
 Entertainment- Finally the readers will be able to escape
and relax when reading my magazine as well as
emotional release
Target Readership
 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
 This is the idea that individuals are motivated by certain
unfulfilled needs the most of basic which must be
satisfied before more complex ones can be achieved.
1. Self Actualisation
 This is the highest of his theory and it is that the
individual believes they are able to become what they
want to however cannot be achieved without the needs
lower in his hierarchy of needs. When consumers are
reading my magazine I want them to feel like they are
able to achieve what they want by reading about their
role models and favourite artists.
http://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html
Target Readership
 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
2. Love and Belonging
 Once the physical survival and safety needs are
being commonly met, a need for love, affection and
belonging begins to arise. My magazine looks to
create this love and sense of belonging to the readers
and will look to keep on creating content in which
readers keep the same love and passion they had the
first time they read the magazine.
Target Readership
3. Safety Needs
 This is the second level of Maslow's hierarchy of
needs. Some of the safety needs include, Finding a
job, financial security, health and wellness.
 When my readers purchase the magazine I want
them to feel safe and secure that they are reading the
latest and most reliable news so then this leads them
to purchasing the magazine every month as they feel
secure and can then move into the third tier of
Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Target Readership
 Socio-Economic Needs
 In recent years there has been an increase of adults who
fall into the A,B and C1 Socio economic group which
means that the spending power of a growing audience is
getting larger meaning that potentially my magazine is
going to grow faster than first anticipated with this
research. I researched this from (Source at the bottom of
the page) Over 60% of readers are from the ABC1 band of
demographic 70% Of the readers are aged 15 to 34.
 Source: http://www.abc1demographic.co.uk/
Target Readership
 Psychographics
 There are 7 seven psychographic groups these are
resigned, Struggler, Mainstreamer, Aspirer, Succeeder,
Explorer and Reformer.
 For a typical Indie/Rock magazine like my inspirations
they will focus on two of these groups more than the
other 5 these, Aspirer and explorer. Firstly the explorers
are energetic and still trying to establish themselves in
the music industry by having to over come challenges
such as touring the country and areas they have never
been to gain an audience following and improve their
popularity.
 From this research it
shows that I should be
aiming my magazine to a
more male dominated
audience. These results
are not surprising as from
my research into NME
on the national
readership website it
shows that 71% of the
readers are male
http://www.nrs.co.uk/downloads/infographic-
slides/feb2015/mobile/market_total_summary.pptx
Following on my magazine is following
very similar trends to NME and the
statistics on the national readership
survey.
Everyone who answered my survey
were under the age of 35 and only 32%
of readers for NME are over the age of
35.
For my magazine I need to keep the
colours appealing to this target age
group and keep on top of the
magazines visual appeal because often
people judge a magazine by its image.
 From this primary research
I can now establish that my
double page spreads
should consist of celebrity
interview with bands and
artists. With over 90% of
my survey wanting to have
exclusive interviews and
gossip to keep up to date
with the latest news with
their favourite
bands/artists.
I have compiled these two questions together because it shows a real contrast on
what is happening on how often they want the magazine to be published but it
also shows how frequent they buy a hardback copy. From my research it shows
that they want the magazine to be published every week however they only buy
hardback copies once a month. From looking at this information and competitors
like NME who produce magazines weekly I am going to make my magazine
monthly to avoid competition with the market leader and try to persuade them to
buy my magazine once a month.
Now that I have established that the
magazine will be produced monthly.
I have to find out on what price to
use for my magazine when it is
produced monthly. From my
research I have found out that 60%
of my readership would pay £2.50
for a magazine every two weeks.
However for a monthly magazine
magazines such as
 From this question it
shows that the population
of my questionnaire are
more interested Pop rock
and RnB compared to
Indie music on which my
magazine will be about.
From this research I have
already found out that my
market is already in a
niche where we I will find
it difficult in how many
copies of the issue I
should produce on a
monthly scale and find out
the demand for the
magazine.
 It is clear to see that
from this question the
most popular form of
social media to reach
my audience would be
Facebook with over
53.85% using it as its
first platform. However
this will not stop me
from making a twitter
page to attract my
magazine to readers and
potential readers with
re tweets and favourites.
Primary Research
 I chose this form of primary research because it
allows the marketing organization to address issues
specific to my own situation. Primary research is
designed to allow me collect the information that I
want to know and report it in ways that benefit the
magazine.
 Furthermore it also enables myself to have a higher
level of control over how the information is collected
at a very low level cost effective way.
Second source of primary research
Questionnaire Completion Evidence
Questionnaire analysis
 Question 1
 From this research it
supports the first
questionnaire I sent out
via survey monkey and
shows that my target
readership is likely to be
more male dominated
compared to females who
are only 34% in this
question.
Questionnaire analysis
 Question 2
 From this research I have
found out that the
majority of my readership
are under the age of 18 so
I have to make the colour
schemes fit in with the age
group. I will try and
engage the content of the
magazine to the readers.
Age
Under 18
18-24
25-34

Over 45
Questionnaire analysis
What content do you
want in the magazine?

 Question 3
 Following on from the
previous question I have
established that they
want to have a mixture
of each topics such as
festival guides and
celebrity interviews with
bands and artists
Questionnaire analysis
 Question 4
From this question I have
noticed that the majority
of the people who I
questioned would like the
magazine to be published
fortnightly as appose to
having a monthly
magazine and a weekly
magazine.
Magazine frequency
Once a
week
Once a

Every

Questionnaire analysis
 Question 5
Hardback copy or
online?
Hardback
Online
The final question of my magazine
was to evaluate whether my reader
would prefer the magazine to be on
a digital based platform or a
hardback copy of the magazine.
Form this I can see that over 60%
of my audience want the magazine
to be in hardback compared to
online which means I will put
more emphasis on advertising the
hardback issues compared to our
digital magazine
How will SHUTTERS appeal to the readership?
 I will try and captivate my audience by giving them content
they want to see in the magazine from my primary research I
have found out that the most popular topics they want to read
about.
These are:
 Celebrity Interviews
 Up coming events
 Festival guides
 By including these topics they want to read about I am hoping
that it will help further their knowledge about what life is like
for a musician through my interviews what to expect and who
to go and see at festivals and some new indie bands who are
touring at that moment and should go and see.
Age & Gender
 From looking at my research in LO1 I established that the
bulk of the target audience and readers for NME are aged
15 to 34 with 71% of the readers at this age.
 Following on from the analysis of my questionnaire from
survey monkey I also established that this was the case.
 Linking to Hartley's seven subjectivities it is what that
person does to put them it that social environment this
can be because they share a passion for the same music, a
similar class in the socio economic group of band A to C1
and finally the age group these readers are most likely to
share hobbies interests and might even have a similar
aim and needs in life.
Subscriptions
 For my magazine I will be offering a discount to
anyone who signs up for 12 months of the magazine
with a 10% discount every issue. With exclusive
posters and other gifts alongside the magazine in the
parcel which you would not be able to buy in any
high-street store or newsagent.
 I will be hoping to create some form of synergy with
websites such as greatmagazines.co.uk
isubscribe.co.uk and magazinesdirect.co.uk as these
are the leaders on magazine subscription companies.

Spending power
 For my magazine to compete with competitors such
as NME and Q I will have to make sure that the price
is lower so that it can attract the readers from the
social class of C2-E as well as having advertisements
and content to attract the stereotypical reader from
A-C1. The reason that the readership figures for
NME and Q are higher for readers from A-C1 is
because they have the disposal income they can
spend on a weekly magazine costing £2.30. I will be
looking to sell my magazine at a price of £1.90 when
the magazine initially launches

 £2128 per year for 20 employees
 Office space to rent for 1 year = £262,350
 Total start-up and equipment costs = £304458
Budget Summary
 To cover the costs of my magazine I have to make sure that I have
adverts but do not want to put too many adverts in the magazine
because it can often put readers off with too many. I think that 10
adverts throughout the magazine will be enough. From my research
I have found out that this is how Bauer media have set there prices:
For year one I will be putting a 5% discount on the cost compared to
Bauer media to try and attract potential buyers for the available
spaces.
I will have 6 full page advertisements costing £8034.4 per page
6 advertisements= £48,205.8
Finally I will have 3 Double Page Spreads bringing an income of
£48,336
In total for 12 months of advertising income will add up to
£1.158501.6
Subscription Income
Income
 The second source of income will be through selling
magazine subscriptions there will be three options
available 6 months and 12 months and 2 years
I have been inspired to do this by researching into other
competitors such as NME. They offer a quarter 1 year and
2 year subscription as they are a weekly magazine
For my prices I will be lowering the price to £3 from
£3.50 per magazine or subscribers when they join they
will receive a welcome pack as well as some exclusive
promotions for subscribing to the magazine
Advertising
 With information sourced from
(http://www.mediauk.com/magazines/36168/nme/
readership-figures) I have found out that 65% of the
readers for NME are male and by reading numerous
issues of the magazine I have noticed trends of the
advertisements are aimed more at the male audience
by having adverts such as Philips razors and L'Oreal
for men shower gel.
Promotion for the Magazine
 Above the line Promotion
 As an Indie/rock magazine I will be using the
appropriate audience and I believe by selecting the right
times and platforms to advertise it can potentially help
my readership grow immediately for this I will be looking
to advertise my magazine on the radio with a 30 second
section on XFM London as this is where we are starting
to sell the magazine £650 (London)
 Following on I will be using is Internet pay per click
advertisement because it is an ever growing way of seeing
advertisement so there is an endless amount of people
who will see it and can be low cost as it is £0.03 per click
with Google.
Promotion for the Magazine
 Below the line Promotion
 I will be looking to hire staff to hand-out flyers and
promotions to people outside gig venues and events
to promote the launch of the magazine. This method
of promotion is called exterior location marketing
and by using this simple yet effective method and
selecting the right events and gigs to hand out the
promotions to it can potentially bring the business
more income with new readers and mouth of word.
Legal & Ethical Issues
 Copyright
 Before producing a magazine I will need to be aware of
the laws which are put in place to make sure that you
need to be able to be sure that you have contacted
companies and requested there acceptance to use their
logo’s or images from a specific website/page to use in
the magazine I will be publishing.
 Following on another law is that you need to be able to
show proof of your receiving a letter from the company to
use their logo so that you are not in trouble for copyright
laws and if you have proof of the acceptance then you can
use that logo in the magazine.
http://elliotmedia.wikispaces.com/Legal+and+Ethical+Issues
Legal & Ethical Issues
 Contract Challenges
 Contract challenges are a set of legal challenges
which stand up from the contracts and licensing law.
First of all if the company has to allow you to use
their logo or specific image, you have to go through a
set of stages of contract signing. This is because once
you sign the contract you are under control by the
company and cannot go back so therefore if you
decide to plagiarise without consent then you can be
in trouble with the press complaints office and could
be taken to court.
Legal & Ethical Issues
 Privacy
 i) Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home,
health and correspondence, including digital communications. This is
important because it makes sure that there is no information about a
celebrity or anyone's health which they do not wish to share with anyone
because it is a private matter they want to deal with themselves and should
never be published online or in a hardback copy of a magazine.
 ii) Editors will be expected to justify intrusions into any individual's private
life without consent. Account will be taken of the complainant's own public
disclosures of information.

 iii) It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without
their consent.
Sourced from:( http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html)
 By setting the benchmark it allows me to think about ideas such as to
what you need to follow from copyright of any company logo to advert
or image and to protect personal information, by setting this
benchmark it makes sure that every magazine stays professional and
reliable
 For my magazine I need to consider what parts of my magazine need to
be under the control of copyright and privacy . So in my scenario for
copyright I will need to protect my logo and ,masthead name and the
adverts which are in my magazine so that no plagiarism occurs about
my work or the advertisers. For privacy I need to take care that I
protect the email accounts of those who email us any stories or gossip
they have from the music world and want to share in our magazine as
from this email it could lead to social media threats and can often be
tracked down to where that person lives which can put them in danger
depending on what they write about.
Legal and Ethical Issues
Information Sourced from:
http://www.mbbp.com/resources/iptech/publishing_legal.html
IP = Intellectual Property
 For my magazine I will hire an external company to protect my IP as it very secure
and protects any business or individual for misusing my magazine brand name or
image. The company I have been looking into to protect my IP is Innovate product
design who are a UK based business with easy contact links with no time difference
difficulties with some other patents I was looking at in the USA.
 You are allowed to download many Facebook badges and icons to use for magazines
however they have set out Do's and Don'ts of their badges and logo. These are:
 Do’s
 Capitalize the word “Facebook”, except when it’s part of a web address
 Display the word “Facebook” in the same font size and style as the content
surrounding it
 Don'ts
 Use the Facebook logo in place of the word “Facebook”
 Pluralize the Facebook trademark, use it as a verb or abbreviate it
Sourced from: https://en-gb.facebook.com/help/399224883474207/
Copyright Logo – ©
 To copyright my magazines name I have to purchase
a copyright registration through a company who
offer the certificate of copyright so I am able to put
this on my magazine and therefore stops other
people and businesses from using any of my content
or name.
Copyright Logo – ©
 Following on here is an example of a registration you
will need to complete to make sure that the magazine
is copyrighted. This is also a helpful website as they
have an interactive service where you can ask
questions with an immediate response
ASA (Advertising Standards Association)
 The ASA have very clear codes they have and must be followed
by every business wishing to advertise any product or service.
There are 22 codes to follow however the codes that I could
potentially be affected by are when producing my magazine:
1. Misleading advertising - A key and extensive section of the
Code, containing rules such as substantiation pricing; the
use of the word ‘free’; availability of products, comparisons,
testimonials and more.
2. Privacy Rules- This is about depicting members of the
public; referring to people with a public profile; implying
endorsement
3. Sales promotions - An important section about promotions
(e.g. competitions, prize draws, instant wins, front page
flashes, charity promotions etc) and incentive schemes
Legal and Ethical Issues Continued
 Please see the blog page
Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover
The masthead for my magazine
will be SHUTTERS and will be in
the Lemon Milk font style I am
going to make the font colour white
as it follows the house style of
magazines of inspiration like Q and
NME
The puff promotion I have
included on the front cover shows
that you have a chance to win a
prize if you purchase and read the
magazine. By having the prize near
the middle of the magazine it
makes the reader read the whole
magazine until the end.
The strapline for my magazine is
new music discovered in which I
want my magazine to focus on
new artist and bands upcoming in
British Music industry
The main Headline I have chosen is
`The Killers` This will be in a bold red font
across the middle of the page which
follows the house style I have created for
the magazine also by using red it also
symbolises love and passion which my
magazine is for music.
The barcode is in the bottom right
corner with the social media sites
my magazine will be on keeping
readers up to date with latest news
and information about what's going
to be in the next issue
By having another two images in
the top right corner it can quickly
establish what other bands feature
within the magazine and are
available as a poster. This is
another way of getting readers by
offering free posters inside the
magazine
The main image on my magazine will
be one of the leading indie/rock artists of
the last ten years `The Killers` this gives
the magazine the star appeal to attract a
early large audience to the magazine.
Hand drawn draft (DPS)
The main headline for my
magazine I have chosen is ‘Alex
Turner’ on the myriad pro font
style because it is very simple
and basic which Alex Turner
represents about the way he
makes music and doesn’t want
the attention on him as it is a
band. It will be in black font
colour because this is matches
his band logo.
The Interview will be on the
right hand side of the page
because it is split up evenly
with half of the page and
makes it easy to read. The
font colour I will be using for
this will be Read for questions
which matches the
background colour for
SHUTTERS masthead and
black for the answers to
establish the difference.
The stand first font my magazine is a
introduction about what the Arctic Monkeys
have done over the past year and just
recapping what s happening and an
introduction what the interview will be
about
The page number I have
chosen for the double page
spread is 49-50 because this
is directly in the middle of
the page and it is what NME
present in terms of this
formatting. I will ‘repeat’
(Steve Neale – 1980) by
having the DPS in the
middle of the magazine as it
allows the reader to reach
the middle and then carry on
reading the whole magazine.
The main image for the DPS
is the artist with their arms out
with no background which will
convey the simplistic life that
the band want to live but are
getting frustrated with
everything the media attention
they are getting for things away
from music
Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover
The masthead for my magazine
will be SHUTTERS and will be in
the Lemon Milk font style I am
going to make the font colour white
as it follows the house style of
magazines of inspiration like Q and
NME.
The strapline for my magazine is
new music discovered in which I
want my magazine to focus on
new artist and bands upcoming in
British Music industry.
The barcode is in the bottom right
corner with the social media sites
my magazine will be on keeping
readers up to date with latest news
and information about what's going
to be in the next issue.
By having another two images in
the top right corner it can quickly
establish what other bands feature
within the magazine and are
available as a poster. This is
another way of getting readers by
offering free posters inside the
magazine.
The puff promotion I have
included on the front cover shows
that you have a chance to win a
prize if you purchase and read the
magazine. The promotion I have
offered on this draft are tickets to
see Alt-J live which is a very
popular band after there newly
released album being very popular
across the country giving the
Richard Dyer Star Appeal to
Readers purchasing the magazine.
The main headline and
image for my magazine will be
one of the leading rock/indie
artist e.g. Arctic Monkeys with
lead singer Alex Turner being
the focus of the interview
inside the magazine and
double page spread.
Hand drawn draft (DPS)
I have decided to place the
interview on both the left and
ride hand side of the page
because the interview has a lot of
content I believe the reader will
want to know about and this is
the only way it can be put onto
the DPS. The font colours will be
red for the questions and black
for the answer as red is the house
colour of my magazine and black
is and easy to read colour on a
white background.
At the bottom of the page in the
middle I will have the social
media sites and issue no. to
show where to get the latest
news and information for the
magazine and what other issues
they can purchase if the have not
read the magazine before.
The page number I have chosen for the
double page spread is 49-50 because this is
directly in the middle of the page and it is what
NME also do. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale –
1980) this by having the DPS in the middle of
the magazine as it allows the reader to reach
the middle and then carry on reading the
whole magazine
The stand first font my
magazine is a introduction
about what the Killers have
been doing for the last ten
years and what they have
done to get where they are
now and the interview will
lead onto what they want to
do in the future.
The main headline for
the double page spread is
`A decade of history` as I
interview about what hey
have done in the last ten
years and what they are
looking to do in the future
and goals the y have set to
reach.
The main image for the DPS is to be in
the middle of page as it represents that
the artists tis the centre of attention and
everyone is looking to him to see what the
future of The Killers holds.
Hand drawn Drafts Analysis
 Firstly I have been inspired for my masthead that I have created by NME
who use a similar red background to there masthead as well as the white
text I am looking to use. This Steve Neale-1980 repeat has been used as
NME have been an established music magazine in the indie/rock genre
since (1952-Present) which NME have very strong brand recognition with
their house style linking to the colours of the masthead. Furthermore
although I have included a puff promotion inside a red circle for my
magazine NME have used a red circle in the same place of the page in their
9th March Edition 2013 which I have used because I find it eye catching to
the reader and follow the house style I am looking to create for my
magazine SHUTTERS. Again looking at my magazine of inspiration NME
I have seen that there main headline location and rotated text is very
commonly used which literally makes the readers head turn so that they
can read the whole headline and fully understand it. With making the
readers head turn and also having a grabbing headline can make potential
readers deciding which magazine to read purchase my magazine.
Hand drawn Drafts Analysis
 For my DPS I have again been inspired by reading and researching
into NME firstly the placing of my image for my hand drawn draft
idea has not been used by NME as much as I believe it should have
been. I think that by placing the main image in the middle of the
page it shows that the interview/Article to take the centre of the
page to show his/her importance about what they have said. With
the text also going around the out side of the image can also have a
very professional finish to the page which can be simply done by
using the pen tool. Additionally for my text I am following the house
style that has been created for my magazine which is very clear on
the front cover as well as the DPS to do this I will have the questions
in red text and the answers in black text. Which is also used by NME
in there interviews to easily show and breakdown the difference
between the question and answer.
Conclusion
 From this Learning Outcome I feel that I have
learned what needs to be done in order to run a
music magazine from the photography plan to a in
depth four week monthly schedule for the whole
magazine. Furthermore I also now have a greater
understanding of the legal and ethical issues
involved with making a magazine. In conclusion the
most informative piece of information for this work
was the customer feedback responses as I feel these
will help me enormously in LO3.

UNIT 30 LO2

  • 1. T H O M A S M C E N A N E Y – 4 0 9 6 Unit 30 LO2
  • 2. Inspiration  The inspiration behind my new magazine I am going to produce is an Indie/rock upcoming artist and bands and I have gained inspiration from reading magazines such as Q and NME. I have chosen this genre of music because I have a strong passion about finding new and upcoming bands in the indie rock genre.  By creating this magazine I hope to gain their band identity and help find and expose them to new potential listeners who may not know who they are before reading my magazine.  I want to help these indie rock bands grow because I know just how hard it can be to get media attention to help them make new records and albums.  For year one I am going o start in London and by issue 12 of 2015 I hope to have target audience reaching Scotland and in the next three years improving on the sales each month and become a market leader in the indie/rock monthly music magazine.
  • 4. Mind Map Colour Scheme Price £1 £1.50£1.75 £2.50 £3.00 Medium Close up Weekly-The magazine will be produced and distributed all in one week with the latest news and gigs Monthly- A larger magazine with information and articles from the previous month and upcoming months gigs/festivals
  • 5. Genre  Bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian all started with out any help apart from the support of online videos and magazine coverage.  The genre of Indie rock connotes extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include indie pop, jangle pop and lo-fi, among others.  Because Indie rock is a very niche genre and market to promote it can be very competitive with other magazines such as NME and Q but with my magazine. I will not be focusing on the mainstream indie rock bands and more about those who are just finding their feet in the business.
  • 6. Style  The colour scheme I am going to use for the front cover of my magazine will be white and red with a blue background with a red text headline on the top of the page.  Following on for the double page spread I am going to use white as the background colour and black as the text. I have selected these colours because ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) as it is used in NME and they have been successful for many years. To replicate the same colour schemes in NME and my magazine I am going to use the ‘eye dropper’ tool in adobe Photoshop to get this perfect match to fit my magazine style.
  • 7. Layout Instantly by looking at these two magazines of inspiration from a similar genre of music I have established that they both se mid shots as the front cover picture and a large picture size. I will ‘repeat’ this shot type to replicate the power and size of the artist or band on the front cover of the magazine By using a mid shot you are able to look at the clothes they are wearing and already stereotype them into a genre of music which they will be associated with and with my magazine I want a potential buyer to look at my magazine that it is an Indie rock music magazine From analysing both main headlines I would prefer mine to be more of like the Kerrang magazine because it is a lot brighter and sands out to the reader immediately about what the main story in the magazine will be about
  • 8. Strapline  ‘New music discovered’  The denotation of my strapline is ‘new music discovered’ connotes that we have a passion for “Discovering” new indie music in the U.K. by having this strapline it grab the attention of the readers and potential buyers looking to buy a magazine illustrates what my magazine is about. Therefore this will hopefully increase sales and brand popularity of my new music magazine.
  • 9. Layout The double page spread of Kerrang Is similar to NME because as they both look into the similar genres of music they will often take similar ideas from one another i.e. medium shot and colour styles. I believe that medium shots is the best shot type you can have on a magazine double page spread because the leaders of indie/rock magazines all have them as their shot type for double page spreads. It biggest appeal would be because it allows the reader to see what they look like close up and what they also like to wear at the same time. By using one of the most unique quotes the band artist used from the interview is often used to grab the attention of the reader and see why and where they said this in the interview. This has been a popular way of editing used by major magazine double page spreads because it establishes whether the interview was taken seriously by the artists or interviewer or whether it was fun and would make a good read to see what their childhood was like or what life is like on the road.
  • 10.
  • 11.
  • 12. Mood Board – Conclusion  The reason I have chosen The colours that I will use in my magazine will hold consistent of red white and the image background as it is for my front cover of the magazine. I will have red text for the headline which will be on the top of the page and spread across the middle of the page. Hopefully when my magazine becomes more popular I will be able to cover some of the masthead like Kerrang and NME do. Red- It is associated with energy, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. White- It is associated with purity which is what Shutters want to be as we produce an honest interview in our magazine with hard working musicians to get there story across.

  • 17. Masthead  My magazine is called Shutters this has been inspired by market research I carried out in my LO2 presentation as it was the most popular name chosen by the audience.  I believe the best font style for my magazine will be Lemon milk from dafonts.com because it is very similar to the style of NME my magazine of inspiration and carries through the similar genre of the new indie different looking text which my magazine focuses on (New music from indie bands and artists)
  • 18. Target Readership  Katz Uses & Gratifications  With the magazine I will be creating I am looking to:  Inform and Educate- This is because when you read my magazine you are able to inform and educate yourself with information you will not find in any other magazine with the exclusive interviews.  Personal Identity- Furthermore you are able to relate and replicate your role models behaviour and interests to the band/artist.  Entertainment- Finally the readers will be able to escape and relax when reading my magazine as well as emotional release
  • 19. Target Readership  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs  This is the idea that individuals are motivated by certain unfulfilled needs the most of basic which must be satisfied before more complex ones can be achieved. 1. Self Actualisation  This is the highest of his theory and it is that the individual believes they are able to become what they want to however cannot be achieved without the needs lower in his hierarchy of needs. When consumers are reading my magazine I want them to feel like they are able to achieve what they want by reading about their role models and favourite artists. http://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html
  • 20. Target Readership  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs 2. Love and Belonging  Once the physical survival and safety needs are being commonly met, a need for love, affection and belonging begins to arise. My magazine looks to create this love and sense of belonging to the readers and will look to keep on creating content in which readers keep the same love and passion they had the first time they read the magazine.
  • 21. Target Readership 3. Safety Needs  This is the second level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Some of the safety needs include, Finding a job, financial security, health and wellness.  When my readers purchase the magazine I want them to feel safe and secure that they are reading the latest and most reliable news so then this leads them to purchasing the magazine every month as they feel secure and can then move into the third tier of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
  • 22. Target Readership  Socio-Economic Needs  In recent years there has been an increase of adults who fall into the A,B and C1 Socio economic group which means that the spending power of a growing audience is getting larger meaning that potentially my magazine is going to grow faster than first anticipated with this research. I researched this from (Source at the bottom of the page) Over 60% of readers are from the ABC1 band of demographic 70% Of the readers are aged 15 to 34.  Source: http://www.abc1demographic.co.uk/
  • 23. Target Readership  Psychographics  There are 7 seven psychographic groups these are resigned, Struggler, Mainstreamer, Aspirer, Succeeder, Explorer and Reformer.  For a typical Indie/Rock magazine like my inspirations they will focus on two of these groups more than the other 5 these, Aspirer and explorer. Firstly the explorers are energetic and still trying to establish themselves in the music industry by having to over come challenges such as touring the country and areas they have never been to gain an audience following and improve their popularity.
  • 24.  From this research it shows that I should be aiming my magazine to a more male dominated audience. These results are not surprising as from my research into NME on the national readership website it shows that 71% of the readers are male http://www.nrs.co.uk/downloads/infographic- slides/feb2015/mobile/market_total_summary.pptx
  • 25. Following on my magazine is following very similar trends to NME and the statistics on the national readership survey. Everyone who answered my survey were under the age of 35 and only 32% of readers for NME are over the age of 35. For my magazine I need to keep the colours appealing to this target age group and keep on top of the magazines visual appeal because often people judge a magazine by its image.
  • 26.  From this primary research I can now establish that my double page spreads should consist of celebrity interview with bands and artists. With over 90% of my survey wanting to have exclusive interviews and gossip to keep up to date with the latest news with their favourite bands/artists.
  • 27. I have compiled these two questions together because it shows a real contrast on what is happening on how often they want the magazine to be published but it also shows how frequent they buy a hardback copy. From my research it shows that they want the magazine to be published every week however they only buy hardback copies once a month. From looking at this information and competitors like NME who produce magazines weekly I am going to make my magazine monthly to avoid competition with the market leader and try to persuade them to buy my magazine once a month.
  • 28. Now that I have established that the magazine will be produced monthly. I have to find out on what price to use for my magazine when it is produced monthly. From my research I have found out that 60% of my readership would pay £2.50 for a magazine every two weeks. However for a monthly magazine magazines such as
  • 29.  From this question it shows that the population of my questionnaire are more interested Pop rock and RnB compared to Indie music on which my magazine will be about. From this research I have already found out that my market is already in a niche where we I will find it difficult in how many copies of the issue I should produce on a monthly scale and find out the demand for the magazine.
  • 30.  It is clear to see that from this question the most popular form of social media to reach my audience would be Facebook with over 53.85% using it as its first platform. However this will not stop me from making a twitter page to attract my magazine to readers and potential readers with re tweets and favourites.
  • 31. Primary Research  I chose this form of primary research because it allows the marketing organization to address issues specific to my own situation. Primary research is designed to allow me collect the information that I want to know and report it in ways that benefit the magazine.  Furthermore it also enables myself to have a higher level of control over how the information is collected at a very low level cost effective way.
  • 32. Second source of primary research
  • 34. Questionnaire analysis  Question 1  From this research it supports the first questionnaire I sent out via survey monkey and shows that my target readership is likely to be more male dominated compared to females who are only 34% in this question.
  • 35. Questionnaire analysis  Question 2  From this research I have found out that the majority of my readership are under the age of 18 so I have to make the colour schemes fit in with the age group. I will try and engage the content of the magazine to the readers. Age Under 18 18-24 25-34 35-44 Over 45
  • 36. Questionnaire analysis What content do you want in the magazine? Celebrity interviews Gossip coloumn Festival guides Upcoming gigs  Question 3  Following on from the previous question I have established that they want to have a mixture of each topics such as festival guides and celebrity interviews with bands and artists
  • 37. Questionnaire analysis  Question 4 From this question I have noticed that the majority of the people who I questioned would like the magazine to be published fortnightly as appose to having a monthly magazine and a weekly magazine. Magazine frequency Once a week Once a month Every fortnight
  • 38. Questionnaire analysis  Question 5 Hardback copy or online? Hardback Online The final question of my magazine was to evaluate whether my reader would prefer the magazine to be on a digital based platform or a hardback copy of the magazine. Form this I can see that over 60% of my audience want the magazine to be in hardback compared to online which means I will put more emphasis on advertising the hardback issues compared to our digital magazine
  • 39. How will SHUTTERS appeal to the readership?  I will try and captivate my audience by giving them content they want to see in the magazine from my primary research I have found out that the most popular topics they want to read about. These are:  Celebrity Interviews  Up coming events  Festival guides  By including these topics they want to read about I am hoping that it will help further their knowledge about what life is like for a musician through my interviews what to expect and who to go and see at festivals and some new indie bands who are touring at that moment and should go and see.
  • 40. Age & Gender  From looking at my research in LO1 I established that the bulk of the target audience and readers for NME are aged 15 to 34 with 71% of the readers at this age.  Following on from the analysis of my questionnaire from survey monkey I also established that this was the case.  Linking to Hartley's seven subjectivities it is what that person does to put them it that social environment this can be because they share a passion for the same music, a similar class in the socio economic group of band A to C1 and finally the age group these readers are most likely to share hobbies interests and might even have a similar aim and needs in life.
  • 41. Subscriptions  For my magazine I will be offering a discount to anyone who signs up for 12 months of the magazine with a 10% discount every issue. With exclusive posters and other gifts alongside the magazine in the parcel which you would not be able to buy in any high-street store or newsagent.  I will be hoping to create some form of synergy with websites such as greatmagazines.co.uk isubscribe.co.uk and magazinesdirect.co.uk as these are the leaders on magazine subscription companies.
  • 47. Spending power  For my magazine to compete with competitors such as NME and Q I will have to make sure that the price is lower so that it can attract the readers from the social class of C2-E as well as having advertisements and content to attract the stereotypical reader from A-C1. The reason that the readership figures for NME and Q are higher for readers from A-C1 is because they have the disposal income they can spend on a weekly magazine costing £2.30. I will be looking to sell my magazine at a price of £1.90 when the magazine initially launches

  • 49. Start-up Costs  Start-up & Equipment costs  Apple Macbook pro x20= £39,980 One off payment  £2128 per year for 20 employees  Office space to rent for 1 year = £262,350  Total start-up and equipment costs = £304458
  • 50. Budget Summary  To cover the costs of my magazine I have to make sure that I have adverts but do not want to put too many adverts in the magazine because it can often put readers off with too many. I think that 10 adverts throughout the magazine will be enough. From my research I have found out that this is how Bauer media have set there prices: For year one I will be putting a 5% discount on the cost compared to Bauer media to try and attract potential buyers for the available spaces. I will have 6 full page advertisements costing £8034.4 per page 6 advertisements= £48,205.8 Finally I will have 3 Double Page Spreads bringing an income of £48,336 In total for 12 months of advertising income will add up to £1.158501.6 Subscription Income
  • 51. Income  The second source of income will be through selling magazine subscriptions there will be three options available 6 months and 12 months and 2 years I have been inspired to do this by researching into other competitors such as NME. They offer a quarter 1 year and 2 year subscription as they are a weekly magazine For my prices I will be lowering the price to £3 from £3.50 per magazine or subscribers when they join they will receive a welcome pack as well as some exclusive promotions for subscribing to the magazine
  • 52. Advertising  With information sourced from (http://www.mediauk.com/magazines/36168/nme/ readership-figures) I have found out that 65% of the readers for NME are male and by reading numerous issues of the magazine I have noticed trends of the advertisements are aimed more at the male audience by having adverts such as Philips razors and L'Oreal for men shower gel.
  • 53. Promotion for the Magazine  Above the line Promotion  As an Indie/rock magazine I will be using the appropriate audience and I believe by selecting the right times and platforms to advertise it can potentially help my readership grow immediately for this I will be looking to advertise my magazine on the radio with a 30 second section on XFM London as this is where we are starting to sell the magazine £650 (London)  Following on I will be using is Internet pay per click advertisement because it is an ever growing way of seeing advertisement so there is an endless amount of people who will see it and can be low cost as it is £0.03 per click with Google.
  • 54. Promotion for the Magazine  Below the line Promotion  I will be looking to hire staff to hand-out flyers and promotions to people outside gig venues and events to promote the launch of the magazine. This method of promotion is called exterior location marketing and by using this simple yet effective method and selecting the right events and gigs to hand out the promotions to it can potentially bring the business more income with new readers and mouth of word.
  • 55. Legal & Ethical Issues  Copyright  Before producing a magazine I will need to be aware of the laws which are put in place to make sure that you need to be able to be sure that you have contacted companies and requested there acceptance to use their logo’s or images from a specific website/page to use in the magazine I will be publishing.  Following on another law is that you need to be able to show proof of your receiving a letter from the company to use their logo so that you are not in trouble for copyright laws and if you have proof of the acceptance then you can use that logo in the magazine. http://elliotmedia.wikispaces.com/Legal+and+Ethical+Issues
  • 56. Legal & Ethical Issues  Contract Challenges  Contract challenges are a set of legal challenges which stand up from the contracts and licensing law. First of all if the company has to allow you to use their logo or specific image, you have to go through a set of stages of contract signing. This is because once you sign the contract you are under control by the company and cannot go back so therefore if you decide to plagiarise without consent then you can be in trouble with the press complaints office and could be taken to court.
  • 57. Legal & Ethical Issues  Privacy  i) Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and correspondence, including digital communications. This is important because it makes sure that there is no information about a celebrity or anyone's health which they do not wish to share with anyone because it is a private matter they want to deal with themselves and should never be published online or in a hardback copy of a magazine.  ii) Editors will be expected to justify intrusions into any individual's private life without consent. Account will be taken of the complainant's own public disclosures of information.   iii) It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without their consent. • 58.  By setting the benchmark it allows me to think about ideas such as to what you need to follow from copyright of any company logo to advert or image and to protect personal information, by setting this benchmark it makes sure that every magazine stays professional and reliable  For my magazine I need to consider what parts of my magazine need to be under the control of copyright and privacy . So in my scenario for copyright I will need to protect my logo and ,masthead name and the adverts which are in my magazine so that no plagiarism occurs about my work or the advertisers. For privacy I need to take care that I protect the email accounts of those who email us any stories or gossip they have from the music world and want to share in our magazine as from this email it could lead to social media threats and can often be tracked down to where that person lives which can put them in danger depending on what they write about. Legal and Ethical Issues Information Sourced from: http://www.mbbp.com/resources/iptech/publishing_legal.html
  • 59. IP = Intellectual Property  For my magazine I will hire an external company to protect my IP as it very secure and protects any business or individual for misusing my magazine brand name or image. The company I have been looking into to protect my IP is Innovate product design who are a UK based business with easy contact links with no time difference difficulties with some other patents I was looking at in the USA.  You are allowed to download many Facebook badges and icons to use for magazines however they have set out Do's and Don'ts of their badges and logo. These are:  Do’s  Capitalize the word “Facebook”, except when it’s part of a web address  Display the word “Facebook” in the same font size and style as the content surrounding it  Don'ts  Use the Facebook logo in place of the word “Facebook”  Pluralize the Facebook trademark, use it as a verb or abbreviate it Sourced from: https://en-gb.facebook.com/help/399224883474207/
  • 60. Copyright Logo – ©  To copyright my magazines name I have to purchase a copyright registration through a company who offer the certificate of copyright so I am able to put this on my magazine and therefore stops other people and businesses from using any of my content or name.
  • 61. Copyright Logo – ©  Following on here is an example of a registration you will need to complete to make sure that the magazine is copyrighted. This is also a helpful website as they have an interactive service where you can ask questions with an immediate response
  • 62. ASA (Advertising Standards Association)  The ASA have very clear codes they have and must be followed by every business wishing to advertise any product or service. There are 22 codes to follow however the codes that I could potentially be affected by are when producing my magazine: 1. Misleading advertising - A key and extensive section of the Code, containing rules such as substantiation pricing; the use of the word ‘free’; availability of products, comparisons, testimonials and more. 2. Privacy Rules- This is about depicting members of the public; referring to people with a public profile; implying endorsement 3. Sales promotions - An important section about promotions (e.g. competitions, prize draws, instant wins, front page flashes, charity promotions etc) and incentive schemes
  • 63. Legal and Ethical Issues Continued  Please see the blog page
  • 64. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover The masthead for my magazine will be SHUTTERS and will be in the Lemon Milk font style I am going to make the font colour white as it follows the house style of magazines of inspiration like Q and NME The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. By having the prize near the middle of the magazine it makes the reader read the whole magazine until the end. The strapline for my magazine is new music discovered in which I want my magazine to focus on new artist and bands upcoming in British Music industry The main Headline I have chosen is `The Killers` This will be in a bold red font across the middle of the page which follows the house style I have created for the magazine also by using red it also symbolises love and passion which my magazine is for music. The barcode is in the bottom right corner with the social media sites my magazine will be on keeping readers up to date with latest news and information about what's going to be in the next issue By having another two images in the top right corner it can quickly establish what other bands feature within the magazine and are available as a poster. This is another way of getting readers by offering free posters inside the magazine The main image on my magazine will be one of the leading indie/rock artists of the last ten years `The Killers` this gives the magazine the star appeal to attract a early large audience to the magazine.
  • 65. Hand drawn draft (DPS) The main headline for my magazine I have chosen is ‘Alex Turner’ on the myriad pro font style because it is very simple and basic which Alex Turner represents about the way he makes music and doesn’t want the attention on him as it is a band. It will be in black font colour because this is matches his band logo. The Interview will be on the right hand side of the page because it is split up evenly with half of the page and makes it easy to read. The font colour I will be using for this will be Read for questions which matches the background colour for SHUTTERS masthead and black for the answers to establish the difference. The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Arctic Monkeys have done over the past year and just recapping what s happening and an introduction what the interview will be about The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME present in terms of this formatting. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) by having the DPS in the middle of the magazine as it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole magazine. The main image for the DPS is the artist with their arms out with no background which will convey the simplistic life that the band want to live but are getting frustrated with everything the media attention they are getting for things away from music
  • 66. Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover The masthead for my magazine will be SHUTTERS and will be in the Lemon Milk font style I am going to make the font colour white as it follows the house style of magazines of inspiration like Q and NME. The strapline for my magazine is new music discovered in which I want my magazine to focus on new artist and bands upcoming in British Music industry. This is another way of getting readers by offering free posters inside the magazine. The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. The promotion I have offered on this draft are tickets to see Alt-J live which is a very popular band after there newly released album being very popular across the country giving the Richard Dyer Star Appeal to Readers purchasing the magazine. The main headline and image for my magazine will be one of the leading rock/indie artist e.g. Arctic Monkeys with lead singer Alex Turner being the focus of the interview inside the magazine and double page spread.
  • 67. Hand drawn draft (DPS) I have decided to place the interview on both the left and ride hand side of the page because the interview has a lot of content I believe the reader will want to know about and this is the only way it can be put onto the DPS. The font colours will be red for the questions and black for the answer as red is the house colour of my magazine and black is and easy to read colour on a white background. At the bottom of the page in the middle I will have the social media sites and issue no. to show where to get the latest news and information for the magazine and what other issues they can purchase if the have not read the magazine before. The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME also do. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale – 1980) this by having the DPS in the middle of the magazine as it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole magazine The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Killers have been doing for the last ten years and what they have done to get where they are now and the interview will lead onto what they want to do in the future. The main headline for the double page spread is `A decade of history` as I interview about what hey have done in the last ten years and what they are looking to do in the future and goals the y have set to reach. The main image for the DPS is to be in the middle of page as it represents that the artists tis the centre of attention and everyone is looking to him to see what the future of The Killers holds.
  • 68. Hand drawn Drafts Analysis  Firstly I have been inspired for my masthead that I have created by NME who use a similar red background to there masthead as well as the white text I am looking to use. This Steve Neale-1980 repeat has been used as NME have been an established music magazine in the indie/rock genre since (1952-Present) which NME have very strong brand recognition with their house style linking to the colours of the masthead. Furthermore although I have included a puff promotion inside a red circle for my magazine NME have used a red circle in the same place of the page in their 9th March Edition 2013 which I have used because I find it eye catching to the reader and follow the house style I am looking to create for my magazine SHUTTERS. Again looking at my magazine of inspiration NME I have seen that there main headline location and rotated text is very commonly used which literally makes the readers head turn so that they can read the whole headline and fully understand it. With making the readers head turn and also having a grabbing headline can make potential readers deciding which magazine to read purchase my magazine.
  • 69. Hand drawn Drafts Analysis  For my DPS I have again been inspired by reading and researching into NME firstly the placing of my image for my hand drawn draft idea has not been used by NME as much as I believe it should have been. I think that by placing the main image in the middle of the page it shows that the interview/Article to take the centre of the page to show his/her importance about what they have said. With the text also going around the out side of the image can also have a very professional finish to the page which can be simply done by using the pen tool. Additionally for my text I am following the house style that has been created for my magazine which is very clear on the front cover as well as the DPS to do this I will have the questions in red text and the answers in black text. Which is also used by NME in there interviews to easily show and breakdown the difference between the question and answer.
  • 70. Conclusion  From this Learning Outcome I feel that I have learned what needs to be done in order to run a music magazine from the photography plan to a in depth four week monthly schedule for the whole magazine. Furthermore I also now have a greater understanding of the legal and ethical issues involved with making a magazine. In conclusion the most informative piece of information for this work was the customer feedback responses as I feel these will help me enormously in LO3.
