Comparison Of Two Creation Stories
Daniyar Sadyk
Paper #1; Topic #4
1+1: Completion and Justification
Creation stories have shaped the way people come to see gender relations. While some have formed
egalitarian viewpoints, most of the people have supported hierarchical notions. The reason for this
division is the existence of two different creation stories that are contradicting each other. And the
real question is not if there are differences or not. But if there is a purpose to these differences?
Indeed, there is. First, men have used Creation 2 to justify their actions and to keep the "patriarchal
system" working. Second, these two stories simply complete each other. With the second story,
Genesis became an excuse for men to rule over the women. In the first story, God creates everything

Genesis 1 has a broad outline which shows how God created the Earth. The author gives a general
account of the creation. Genesis 1 does not have any detailed information in it, but rather some
overview on what happened. However, people want to know not just how our world was created,
but also how exactly humankind came to life. And Genesis 2 successfully explains how God created
man from the dust, and woman from the man's ribs. It has many details that the first story does not.
Therefore, it is easy to conclude that the first story is more chronological and general, whereas the
second one is topical. The first story summarizes the whole process, while the second is more
specific about man and his environment. Moreover, the second story could never be the only
creation story because it does not have a sufficient information needed to explain how God created
the Earth. For example, there is no mention of the creation of the day and night. There are no
explanations how the oceans and fish were generated. Clearly, these two stories are complementary
as they are supplying each other's

Comparison of Two Short Stories by Tobias Wolff and T.C Boyle
From the weekend fishing trips to complete hatred and denial, father–son relationships can be
characterized by many good and bad experiences. After reading the two short stories "Powder" by
Tobias Wolff and "If the River was Whiskey" by T.C. Boyle, which both feature father–son
relationships that are placed under a large amount of stress. There are many similarities and
differences between these two relationships that are not apparent upon just a cursory glance. A
father can be completely inconsiderate of his sons needs or try his best to meet them and still create
turmoil within the relationship. After reading Wolff's short story "Powder," one can conclude that
the father tries quite hard to make his son happy. In this story the father ... Show more content on

The wife attacks the father by saying, "We've been here two weeks and you haven't done one damn
thing with him, nothing, zero. You haven't even been down to the lake. What kind of father are
you?" (231). Seeing his parents in such an argument affects the son by making him disconnected
and hateful toward his father. When the son came home from school he would find his father "sitting
in the dark, hair in his face, bent low over the guitar. There was an open bottle of liquor on the
coffee table and a clutter of beer bottles" (231). Coming back to this dreary home life after school
and seeing one's father in this condition would be very traumatic. It shows him that his father
doesn't care about his job and would rather be at home drinking while reminiscing about his past.
The relationship between them finally took a turn for the better when his father put down the bottle
and decides to go fishing with Tiller and spend some quality time with him. Boyle explains Tiller's
excitement by saying "It was too much for him all at once––the sun, the breeze that was so sweet,
the novelty of his father rowing, pale arms and a cigarette clenched between his teeth, the boat
rocking, and the birds whispering––he closed his eyes a minute, just to keep from going dizzy with
the joy of it" (233). At this point, one can see

Analysis Of Flannery O Connor's Two Story
I am going to mention about Flannery O' Connor's two stories in my essay. One of them is ''The Life
save may be your own'' and the other is '' A good Man is Hard to Find''. I will talk about Flannery O'
Connor's' stories' summary and my opinions about that. Firstly I am starting with summary of O'
Connor's ''The Life Save may be your own'' Story starts with an elderly women and her daughter.
After that one of the men come up their road named Mr. Shiftled. He starts smoking and during the
conversations, they decided to make an arrangement. Mr. Shiftled starts to work around the farm in
return of some food and shelter. They continue their talking about marriages. Mrs. Crater asks him
that he are married or not and after that she wants to marry with her daughter but he refused this.
Even though he refused to marry with her at first than he lied for car than he accept to marry ...

''The life you save may be your own'' In my opinion in this story our characters are important. Mr.
Shiftled had a big chance to save his life but he didn't do this. He is selfish that he accept the
marriage but not for Lucynell. His life could be better but it couldn't. I think Mrs. Crater is not a
good mother because she wants a sudden marriage with one she never knew. But the important point
of the story is about the boy and Mr. Shiftled. And the story ends with Shiftled prayerfull shout. So
he tries to be clean in the world but he gets into a rut both genuine and metaphorically meaning. I
am continuing with the second story analysis; I think out main character ''grandmother'' is a
religious and moral person and she is little bit selfish. She wants everything to be her own way. She
has strong religious believes like our novelist O' Connor. O' Connor has a strong believer to
Christianity. While grandmother was dying, she seems like closer to God. Also an angel figure. But
we don't find it realistic. Because her touching is just

Two Points Of View Stories
Two Points of View Stories Liddy Newnam Every year I anticipate our vacation to visit the
Quartapella's beach house. Bouncing in my seat, we ride the ferry taking us out to Bald Head Island.
Michael and Nicholas' faces show as we approach the shore. Their arms wave wildly, their hands
flapping in the air. Every year, since we moved from Charlotte to DC, we visit them. My sister Anna
is two years older than me and went to play group with Mike and Nick., For me it's a little tough
fitting in with the older kids. For me to truly participate in the games, I have to push a little harder to
be accepted. Most years we do the same activities, the games only differ a little as we get older.

It may seem odd, but we spend a lot of time in our bedroom. When you walk into that room, there
are two sets of bunk beds, and clothes cover the floor. Anna and Michael always claim the top
bunks, and Nick and I each have a bottom. Almost immediately after we arrive, Michael suggests
his favorite game. This consists of hitting Nick with ugly dolls by throwing them at the fan, and
having them fly off and hit him. This game quickly evolves into a violent dodgeball game with
stuffed animals that can only be compared to the Hunger Games. Commonly I don't want to
participate in the reckless games that we normally do, because I am younger and as a result I
become injured quite a bit. I don't admit this to the older kids because all I want to do is play with
my best friends. The game tends to come to a close when someone falls off the top bunk, which
apparently, this time, was Nick. When we aren't wrecking the house, we go outside. Racing across
the sand, we plummet into the water, the splash wars have begun. Next to come, sandcastle building
and, what seems like endless laughter. Then, we come home, sand filling our swimsuits and sheeted
to our skin, to rinse off in the outdoor shower. I pull the handle out

Analysis Of The Story ' Red Convertible The Two Brothers '
In the short story Red Convertible the two brothers, as close as they are, you really never know how
someone is or feels or acts unless you truly know what they've been through or if you are them and
have gone through what they've been through. The brother have always been close they're whole life
but the split really changes one. Lyman and Henry really have a true connection with each other.
The car they bought together without really thinking twice about it and they shared it really just
shows us that the brothers have a stronger bond then most because they were both broke they spent
every dollar they had on the car, both of them. Another example in the story that shows us the bond
they have is when they pick up Susie the hitchhiker and they ask her where to? And she says Alaska.
The two brothers almost immediately say lets go, no second questions and in the new car they just
got. They are both in sync with each other. The trip is really important to the relationship of Lyman
and Henry because they get there and they stay for a little bit where the unpredictable growth of
plants is just crazy and the cold weather but they bond through it and Susie's family puts up a tent in
the backyard for them. Just in the matter of how they both are just friendly buys them a ticket to stay
with Susie's family, the kids also just are always playing with them, that shows us that they are
really great people to be around because of the friendly bond they have with each other. The fact

Comparing Two Creation Stories
The book of genesis is an important part of the sacred Christian writings of the bible, has received a
lot of examination and assumption over the years. The 2 creation stories from genesis 1 and 2 were
written or orally passed down around 1445 BC. It is believed by many conservative scholars to the
present day, that genesis was written by Moses. Both stories give insight into their different views of
God as well as two different ways of interpreting the story. Comparing the two different versions of
the creation story I am going to be analysing these two sacred texts with research from historical
information. Doing this will let us recognise not only the similarities but the differences in these
stories. These two creation stories fluctuate in genre and include different legendary features. The
first genesis creation story has been written in a poetic form and has repetitive rhyming to propose
that the story was meant to be sung. In Genesis one the recurrence of the phrases "and it was so" and
"and god saw that it was good" indicate that the rhyme or song is coming to an end. The second

Comparing Two Creation Stories
In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to everything. From the creation stories to the sagas in
between Genesis is an opening to the old testament and an opening to the book of exodus. This
essay will contrast each creation story and describe each stories interest, explain how Genesis 12: 1–
3 links the stories of 2: 4b–11 with the ancestral narratives in 12–50 and connect the sagas of
Abraham/Sarah, Isaac/ Rebecca and Jacob/ Racheal. The first creation story is found in Genesis 1–
2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day
one God made the heavens. On day two God made the sky. On day three God made land and sea.
On day four God created time. On day five God made marine creatures. One ... Show more content

In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the
man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to
bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did
not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of
his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man
he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of
Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50
because it explains the human problem and the divine solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that
as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and
arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth
was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved
Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they could
multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply,
Abraham was born by Noah's grandson Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50
because they are consisted of

Two Kinds of Interpretations in Amy Tan’s Short Story Two...
Often times mothers can be pushy, annoying, and a bit overbearing but in the long run they always
just want what is best for their child. Everyone wants their child to be the best, most popular and
overall number one. In Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds" we see this type of fame hungry mother.
The short story is about a Chinese family who lost everything. The mother had lost her entire family
full of children except for the one in the story. With the belief "you could be anything you want in
America" (Tan 305) in mind the mother set off to find what her child can do. This ultimately will
resort in disappointment for both the mother and child, as they do not share the same goals
throughout the short story. My initial personal interpretation of this piece is that the mother wants to
live vicariously through her daughter. This was proven throughout the story time and time again.
Through further thought, different literary techniques, and class discussion I became aware of an
alternate interpretation of the story. This is that their are two kinds of daughters and the way the
mother daughter relationship could be. Both interpretations have many examples to support them
and the story can truly be analyzed in more then one way. The mother in the story is sensibly upset
about what has happened in the past in China. After losing everything she wanted the best for her
daughter, but could this possibly mean she wanted it for herself as well. It seems the mother might

'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' and 'The Red Convertible' 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek
Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce and 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Erdrich both recount sorrowful
tales of men during times of war. The stories differ in that 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is a
story written in reverse, where the readers do not truly know the plot until the end– whereas 'The
Red Convertible' is just a man recounting the story of his long lost brother. However despite their
differences, both of the stories continue to build up hope in the reader only to find nothing but a
sorrowful story at the end.

The entire story was just a snapshot that occurred in his mind before his death. Ambrose Bierce
purposefully continues to build the anticipation that the devout Union soldier had escaped, only to
drop the reader into a tale of demise and overall doom. 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Endrich
was written in 1984 and revolves around a Vietnam veteran and his brother. Lyman Lamartine is a
young man whose brother has just returned from the Vietnam War and has been traumatized by what
he had seen overseas.
Before the war, Lyman and his brother Henry were extremely close. Before Henry departed for the
war, and as Lyman recounts in the story, the two bonded over a red convertible. This car proves to
be symbolic, both throughout, and at the end of the story, due to the change in Henry's behavior,
illustrated by this quote from when Henry returns: "We had always been together before. But he was
such a loner now that I didn't know how to take it."
When Henry returns, he has no desire to ride in the red convertible, no desire to wear the bright
colored clothes he used to dawn–– instead Henry just liked to sit around and sob about the war. The
quote from the middle of the story, speaking about the television, and how Henry just sat "in front of
it, watching it, and that was the only time he

Two Great Short Stories Read by Many are A Rose for Emily...
Two of the greatest short stories written back in late 19th and early 20th centuries are still read by
many people. The two stories are "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner and Guy De
Maupassant's "The Necklace". Faulkner's book is about a woman named Emily Grierson's life and
her horrible secret she hides. The other book is about a materialistic woman named Mathilde Loisel
loses a fake necklace and find out to be a fake one after ten years later. Although these stories are
written about fifty years apart and written from two different countries, these two stories have many
similarities and differences. "A Rose for Emily" and "The Necklace" are juxtaposed with the main
characters, usage of symbolism on the title, and the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
Also these items can reflect the strong symbolism in it. Faulkner used a rose, but De Maupassant
used the necklace to represent the main character's emotions in two items. The difference in those
symbols is that a rose has only appeared on the title but the necklace is the whole flow of the story.
Faulkner leaves the reader to interpret the rose's symbolic meaning. The rose is usually a powerful
symbol of love, it always has been, and portrays an everlasting beauty. Moreover, the rose has been
used for centuries to illustrate an eternal type of love and faithfulness. Therefore, readers can infer
the meaning that the rose present in the title, and portray it to Emily that she does not have love in
her life. The necklace, however it is the important items that lead to the climax of the story. It is
pretty but worthless, shows the awareness of appearance and real world. Also, the fake necklace
shows Mathilde's desire to be something she is not. The last comparison about these two narratives
about tone. The tone of two narratives is very ironic. There are many ironies to be found in "A Rose
for Emily." One of the examples, when she is speaking with the Aldermen. They are trying to
convince Emily to pay her taxes and she simply repeated a person's name who has been dead for ten
years. The other story "The Necklace" also have many ironical quotes. Mathilde Loisel really wants
to be in the upper class society, but because she shows persistence borrowing the

through purposeful misusing of sustenance, constrained work, oppression and in addition misuse of
human rights and stripping of nobility from being beaten while exposed. The significant distinction
between the two stories is the generally drilled sexual misuse of ladies in the Incidents in the Life of

The Call, Os Guinness
In his book, "The Call" Os Guinness presents the biblical definition of calling for the Christian.
Guinness brings clarity to what true Biblical calling is, and how it should affect our lives. Guinness
presents the skewed modern conception of calling, that is not at all biblical, and shatters its ideas.
Throughout "The Call", Guinness explains how calling should transform our lives, and influence
everything that we do. Guinness explains that there are two different types of calling that work
together; primary and secondary. First, Guinness explains the concept of a primary calling that every
Christian receives. This primary call declares that Christians are called "by Him, to Him and for
Him." (Pg. 31) He then further explains that "we are called to Someone (God), not to something
(such as motherhood, politics or teaching) or to somewhere (such as the inner city or Outer
Mongolia)." (Pg. 31) Guinness presents his idea on the primary calling as a calling directly into
relationship with God that every believer receives before anything else. It would be foolish to think
that one receives a "calling" to serve in a specific church as a pastor before they ever become a
believer. Even further, Guinness argues that "Neither work, nor career can be fully satisfying
without a deeper sense of calling–but "calling" itself is empty and indistinguishable from work
unless there is Someone who calls." (Pg. 37) Our primary calling it to God as believers and no one

Comparing The Two Creation Stories
Michael Gugliotta

English 2 Honors
Mrs. Salvatorelli
The Similarities of the Two Creation Stories The story of Creation in the Bible begins with God
creating a human in his own image, naming him Adam. He created a human to carry out his
commandments and to be good. Then, God created Eve, a companion for Adam. Adam and Eve
were persuaded by Satan, in the form of a serpent, and took a bite out of the apple that God told
them not to eat. When God found out, they were banned from the Garden of Eden. In Mary Shelly's,
Frankenstein, Victor constructs a monster as a template for a new race that would worship him.
Unfortunately, Victor did not think past the moment of birth, and the monster, who should have been
Victor's Adam, instead associated more with Satan. Unlike the creation story of Adam and Eve, the
creation story of Frankenstein is one that goes horribly wrong due to the pursuit of knowledge. In
Frankenstein, Victor creates the monster for selfish reasons. Victor did not know if reanimating life
was possible, "but my imagination was too much exalted... to permit me to doubt of my ability of to
give life to an animal as complex and wonderful as man" (57). The impression of Victor creating a
creature in his own image relates to the story of Adam and Eve. God created Adam and Eve to bring
new life to Earth. He also wanted them to carry out his laws and treat each other and everything they
encountered with adoration and respect. Like God, Victor wanted his creature

The Contrast of Two Great Short Stories: The Rocking Horse...
I. Introduction
The setting in the stories The Lottery and The Rocking–Horse Winner create an atmosphere where
the readers can be easily drawn in by the contrasting features of each short story. This short essay
will tell of very important contrasting aspects of settings in that while both stories are different, both
hold the same aspects.
a. "The Lottery" is a short story about an event that takes place every year in a small village of New
England. When the author speaks of "the lottery" he is referencing the lottery of death; this is when
the stoning of a village member must give up his or her life. The villagers gather at a designated
area and perform a customary ritual which has been practiced for many years. The Lottery is a ...

250). The scene is being set as happy, upbeat and cheerful by the author's description of a sunny and
peaceful day allowing the readers to believe that the story has a pleasant ending by describing the
village buildings, objects and the village itself. As the readers push through the story they come to
realize that something barbaric is about to take place. The author of this short story added an
effective cover–up of irony.
b. In the setting of "The Rocking–Horse Winner" the author used the real life geographic location of
England which helps the setting to become essential; it sets the reader's experience to events that
take place in actuality such as the horse races that occur in modern times. The fact that the horse
races are real makes the readers relate to Paul's character without having to add more content. The
story invites readers to oversee the events of a young boy's supernatural abilities while setting up the
struggles of his mother whose heart is indifferent to the care and needs of her child. The author uses
descriptions of the family's exterior dwelling, the servants and gardens to inform the readers of the
characters view in terms of need and conflicting means to keep up with their neighbors.
III. Contrast
a. In the story "The Lottery", the evil in the souls of the villagers is brought out during the lottery. It
is more of an evil that is held in rather than hidden. They smile,

They felt a oneness with the object of their love. They tried to breakdown the boundaries of their
isolation. Both passions brought them out of their aloneness and loneliness. A difference in
characters was that the boy in Araby was passive, inactive and reflectiveabout his passion. The focus
was on himself and how he felt about his friend’s sister. He was anintrovert while the
character in the second story was an extrovert being active and involved in his lovefor nature; he
was more aware of what he was doing. In addition, the boy’s pride in Araby took over
hisfeelings for the girl which were destructive and almost destroyed him. The girl had a ruinous
influenceon him as she occupied his mind taking him away from his sleep and school work. She
haunted his mindwhen he was not around her. In A Sunrise On The Veld, the character had a
purposeful obsession. Onethat taught him valuable lessons about life, for example, that nature can
be hostile and not to take itfor granted. There was a difference in what the boys learned from their
experiences. The boy in Arabylearned something about himself. He learned that his love for the girl
was one–sided, unreal and itsonly basis was in his feelings. It was not a mutual feeling and therefore
may have destroyed what he felt for her. However the boy’s joy for nature in A Sunrise On

the bible. In the first story God has all dominion and contains supernatural powers. In this creation
story God is masculine and creates everything out of the void in seven days . God has six days of
working and one day to rest. An impression is also given that everything God makes in this story is
"all good". The second creation story explains how The Lord God created man , the Garden of Eden
and the man with a womb. Man and woman are placed into the garden of Eden. The Lord God ,
Elohim Yahweh is a feminine noun. The Lord God then creates plants and made the vegetation
produce. The Lord God creates man and animals as mans initial help meet, then the Lord God
decides to create a man with a womb. Therefor the two creation stories have different names for
God and different ways and order of creation. The audience is essentially being told the same story
(the story of creation) but it is told from different angles.
In the first story God is described as having all dominion , super powers and total dominance and he
creates everything by speaking. However , in the second story God is seen as a worker because he
preforms physical actions such as planting. The second story ... Show more content on

Comparing Two Fairy Stories
Title Some fairy tales end with a happy marriage to a wealthy person and living a life on a bed full
of roses. An example can be found in Beauty and the Beast. There is a young girl and her father is a
merchant. She ends up marrying the Beast, who ends up being a handsome prince, and live happily
ever after. But there are two fairy tales that are a little different. The first one is Thumbelina. She
goes through all of these obstacles to end up marrying a prince. She is gifted wings and ends up
living happily ever after. There are some fairy tales that really don't have that "happy" ending. The
Little Mermaid gets her heart broken due to her living in almost a completely different world than
her true love. She ends up committing suicide because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theme is shown in all the fairy tales. This is shown in Beauty and the Beast when Belle falls for
a beast who ends up having a heart of gold and later becomes a handsome prince who, before Belle
loved him, was under a curse. This theme is shown in Thumbelina when all of the guys fall in love
with her, even when being blind. The mole falls in love with her just from hearing her sing. It
doesn't matter what Thumbelina looked like. This theme is also shown in the Little Mermaid. The
Little Mermaid fell in love with someone she thought she could have. She was beautiful and wanted
him. She didn't feel her self worth was a whole lot, especially at the end, because she saw him with
another woman.
Themes of sacrifice, unconditional love and beauty not determining someone's worth were all
shown within these fairy tales. Sacrifice is shown a lot of times when there is unconditional love.
Most of the time there is unconditional love, there is also someone not determining someone's
worth. Beauty and the Beast, Thumbelina and the Little Mermaid all have overlapping themes. Most
fairy tales end up with happy marriages and living on a bed full of roses. But there are some that

Comparing Stories 'Walk Two Moons And The Guest'
The two stories Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech and "The Guest" retold by Uma Krishnaswami
share a similar theme of don't judge a person till you know them. Even though the two stories share
a similar theme, the authors tell it in different ways. In the first novel Walk Two Moons the author
shows the common theme through the characters thoughts, and feelings. For instance,"Like Mr.
Cadaver–as I told you before. Maybe Mr.Birkway helped her chop up her husband and bury him and
maybe they were getting worried and decided to disguise the spot with a rhododendron bush."
Phoebe thought Mrs. Cadaver killed her husband and was judging her actions before knowing her
and her backstory. Phoebe imagines the worst possible things when thinking of Mrs.Cadaver.
Another piece of evidence that proves the theme is," Everywhere you looked was something
startling: a stuffed squirrel, a kite in the shape of a dragon, a wooden cow with a spear piercing it's
side." Both of the girls, Sal and Phoebe, thought that Mrs. Cadaver had a bunch of weird things on
the walls and all over the place. The girls were judging the way her house was before they ... Show

One piece of evidence that contributes to the theme is,"The rich man came to the courtyard to take a
look. Seeing the old man in his ragged clothes, he waved a hand to the servant, then went back to
join his elegant guest." This reveals that the rich man wouldn't let the man in just because his clothes
weren't fancy enough. The rich man only invited him cause he looked better when he met him.
Another piece of evidence that helps understand the theme is,"When I arrived in rags, you turned
me away. Now that I am dressed in finery, you treat me with honor." This demonstrates how some
people treat others badly because of what they wear or looked like. Even if they don't know you or
the reason why you wear those things or look like you

Female Repression of the 19th Century as Seen Thru the Two...
For centuries man has created this patriarchal society in which women have been treated as the
lesser entity, having no sense of self–being or worth. These feelings led women to feel repressed in
their everyday life. It was in the late nineteenth century when literary writers started to expose this
female repression. Guy de Maupassant and Kate Chopin clearly express definitive examples of
female repression in their stories, The Necklace and The Story of an Hour. During this time period,
women's role in society was that of a submissive, powerless position. They often relied solely on
their husband for direction, allowing the husband to make decisions and take lead no matter what. In
the story of The Necklace, Maupassant illustrates these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only thing that women could take ownership of was their beauty. "She danced with intoxication,
with passion, made drunk by pleasure, forgetting all, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her
success, in a sort of cloud of happiness composed of all this homage, of all this admiration, of all
these awakened desires, and if that sense of complete victory which is so sweet to a woman's heart"
(Maupassant 63). In this passage, Mathilde was basting in her own beauty because it was of her
own. During this time many women were forced into marriage, resulting in a great unhappiness.
Both Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant state this lack of joy that was often experienced
everyday by women. "It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long"
(Chopin 68). If was as if Mrs. Mallard was sickened by the idea that her life and the way it was,
would continue forever. Maupassant portrays Mathilde's frustration in her marriage with the
frequent use of the word "suffered" in relationship to her higher class wants and desires. "She
suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries. She suffered from
the poverty of her dwelling, from the wretched look of the walls, from the worn–out chairs, from the
ugliness of the curtains" (Maupassant 59). These two stories exemplify the epitome of women's
repression in the male–dominated society of the late nineteenth century by conveying the feelings of

Comparing Two Creation Stories
The Bible begins with a story of creation, but not just one, two creations stories are existent. In each
story God is there to bring creation and give understanding in the differences between divine and
unholy. The bible's first two chapters are the creation stories found in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.
From Gods spirit came creation and from his word came the creation on earth. In each story there
are major differences but they also have great similarities. In chapter 1 of genesis the story begins
with the seven days of creation, but in chapter two of genesis story is based on of Adam and Eve.
The first story of creation spanning from genesis 1:1 to genesis 2:4 unpack the creation of the earth
in a time of seven days. Genesis 1 opens introducing the fact that God created heaven and earth.
This was the first understanding of his divinity by him being able to create something pure. The first
creation story could only be backed by faith because there was no man around to witness it but God.
The story is not based off of natural sciences or historical reference, because it all revolves around
the faith of God. Even within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

second chapter of genesis was actually said to be written before the first book. So in actuality where
and when was the first creation in the Bible. Essentially the it all was creation, but it all given in a
different view. Also God is still present as the creator no matter how it's viewed. The purpose of the
Bible creation stories was not for moral purpose but spiritual revaluation, because in each story are
lessons one can deeper understand and carry into their lives everyday. Small lessons such as
knowing God created you and took pride in it are lessons the first bible gives and are very
significant in not only the second story but in everyday

But when I read the short story "Everyday Use" and the "A pair of tickets" I find myself. Because I

First of all, when comparing these two characters I found some similarities because Dee is an
African–American and June is American–Chinese. Moreover, they seem to have the same family
issue because they fight a lot with their parents. Also, both of them don't want to follow their

On the contrary, Hemingway's short story does not establish a presence of Pathos. Hemingway does
very little in describing Jig and the American and both of their backgrounds. In fact, there is no
textual evidence regarding anything about these two characters. In Boyle's story, however, there is
an ample amount of background information supplied; this accomplishes the task of getting readers
to empathize for the characters which drives Pathos home to the heart. For example, when Boyle
expounds upon the future endeavors of the couple, he builds a relationship with the characters and
the readers; "He'd been accepted at Brown... ...own G.P.A. would put him in the top ten percent of
their graduating class." (para 13) Boyle further explains how China and Jeremy are both gifted
students; he also insinuates that they will go off and do remarkable things. Of course, this never
happens. However, the reader's want of success for the couple is present. This paves way for an
emotional connection. So, if Boyle were to revise Hemingway's short story, Boyle would expound
upon Jig's and the American's lives which would lead to an intimate connection between the two and
the readers. This would establish a sense of Pathos and empathy while explaining the characters
more definitely. Boyle and Hemingway's stories both a couple and a problem. Although the problem
is universal, the infrastructure of the problem differs. The infrastructure is primarily controlled by

Comparing Two Creation Stories
Genesis is the book of creation. It tells how everything and everyone came to be. In Genesis there
are two different creation stories. Based off of my knowledge in chapter one, it starts by God
creating everything, from the Earth to humans; man and woman. In the second story, it talks about
how God created Eve from the rib of Adam. So basically how woman came from man.
The main differences are that in Genesis one, it tells of how man and woman are created at the same
time versus in chapter two how a woman is created after man is created. Also, in Genesis two
woman, Eve, was created directly from man, Adam. Technically, form the rib of Adam and dirt Eve
was created. While in the first, everything else was created first. Everything from Heaven and Earth

In the second chapter, there is good and evil; the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told
them, Adam and Eve, that they could eat from any other plant in the garden of Eden except from the
tree of knowledge of good and evil. The serpent talked Eve into eating from the tree of knowledge
of good and evil and she also gave her husband some. At the moment they ate from it they knew
they were naked and they sewed together fig leaves to cover themselves. And because of this God
punished them and Eve was punished with the pain of childbirth.
In my opinion, the first chapter is on overview of how the earth and every living creature was
created. It might have taken seven days to do everything, but within those seven days he created
earth, heaven, creatures, and humans. In the second chapter, I believe it is just a more detailed
version of what happened in chapter one. Also, I don't think that it necessarily took seven days to
complete everything. Time was different back then. Seven days could've been seven minutes or
seven hundred years. There was no true sense of time back then, only what people have

When I was younger, I thought that the seven day story was the first part of how the earth came to.
Then the Adam and Eve was the second part. Like in the first one they say the animals were created

old self forgot a lot about the two. Like I didn't know that Eve was created from Adams rib. If I had
to try to explain to someone how and when the Earth and everything else was created is not easy to

"Adam and Eve" story. But by just reading the two creation stories I would have great difficulty
explaining when the earth was created.
I have learned bunches of information reading the two creation stories. Like they were two separate
accounts of the creation of earth not just sections. The major differences of the two were more than I
remember from when I was a small boy. Also how difficult it would be to try to explain to someone
when the world got here, and the easier part of telling how it got here. This assignment was one I

Aylmer wants to remove something which is already existent, his wife's birthmark. In contrast, Dr.
Rappaccini modified his daughter with the help of scientific methods from the moment she was
born when he connected her life to the poisonous shrub in his garden.
2.1 The Role of the Wife and Daughter
Just like the two scientists, the two female characters have several similarities to offer. Both,
Georgiana and Beatrice are beautiful women which became victims of the scientific obsession of
their husband and father. Georgiana is described as a beautiful woman and also Beatrice is
characterized as "a young girl, arrayed with as much richness of taste as the most splendid of the
flowers, beautiful as the day." After their description of beauty and pureness their 'mistake' is
revealed. Georgiana carries a hand–shaped birthmark on her cheek, which was loved and cherished
by her former lovers, envied by other women but hated by her own husband. Also Beatrice's dark
character treats are revealed when the young Giovanni Guasconti observed her poisonous breath and
her relationship to the mysterious shrub. Thus Beatrice can be compared to the flowers in Dr.
Rappaccini's garden; she is beautiful but poisoned. At the end of the short stories both of the young
females die and their former beauty and perfection are destroyed. While Georgiana dies after her
husband tried to remove her birthmark, Beatrice dies

Marriage and domesticity became the most longful goal for most families, and was backed up by the

Americans were challenged to adapt and the importance of family and religion came very much to

revolves around a young, ingenious boy that seems to have a speculative mindset and very deep

When Seymour takes his own life, we backtrack to his story and he is then seen as a celestial figure,
ahead of his time and full of wisdom. Metaphorically speaking, the bananafish ideology depicts
humanity in the postwar boom generation, where riches surround all people. However, amidst all the
possessions, we cannot help ourselves and we continuously and relentlessly consume, regardless of
what may happen as a result. We are each trapped in our own banana–filled hole, in which Seymour
ultimately escapes from through his death.
In the final short story "Teddy", the main character is a ten–year old boy who is as intuitive and
intelligent as any character gets in this novel, with the exception of Seymour of course. Like
Seymour Glass, Teddy sees the world differently than his peers. The two tend to focus their a lot of
their attention on small details, such as orange peels, the colour of bathing suits, a woman that
seemingly looks at Seymour's feet, and appear to mirror a larger–scale vision of humanity. Teddy's
orange peels recall Seymour's bananafish. Both their objects, in Seymour's case an imaginary one,
are somewhat allegorical in a sense that they seem to suggest a philosophical portrayal of humanity.
To clarify, Teddy first notices the orange peels floating and finds them interesting. The remnants of
what was once a living fruit, now floating, lifeless on the dark water. Later on he notes that, if he

1) What is Capital Punishment and what was its history in Canada? Capital Punishment, also called
the death penalty, is the execution of an offender sentenced to death as a punishment for a crime. In
1865, "crimes of murder, treason, and rape carried the death penalty in upper and lower Canada" (1,
Susan Munroe) . Furthermore, in 1961, murder was classified into Capital and Non–Capital
offenses. Capital murder offenses in Canada were intended murder and murder of a police officer,

In the short story 'Two Fishermen' by Morley Callaghan, Thomas Delaney is man being sentenced to
death by hanging for murdering Matthew Rhinehart who molest his wife. If this story's setting is
based in Canada, it would most likely happen between the 1930 and 1960's as crimes for murder

an extremely debatable subject. In the 19th century, hanging is a common punishment that is used
for serious offenses such as treason or murder. There is usually sympathy for the person being
hanged but the hangman is often jeered by the crowd. To showcase the setting, the story indicates
the utilization of automobiles for example, at the end of the story the "sheriff pulls [Smitty] into the
automobile" (8). Also, the description of Smitty's attire by dressing "in a long black cut away coat
with grey striped trousers and a gate ajar collar" (7) shows the fashionable style during that time. To
add on, the author does not mention the use of technology, however, Callaghan indirectly describes
the road conditions that consist of white gravel instead of pavement. An example of this is when the
fisherman throws fish at Smitty, resulting for the fish to land in "thick dust in front of him, sending
up a little cloud" (8). Another example of this is at the end of the story when Smitty gets into the
automobile and the car drives "forward in a cloud of dust" (8). This demonstrates the white gravel

A Tale Of Two Moral Stories
A tale of two moral stories
Geoffrey Chaucer was a great author of the 12th century. He was known as the father of English
poetry. Chaucer is the author of the famous work "The Pardoner's tale"., the book is a collection of
short stories. "The Pardoners Tale" and the "The Doctor of Medicine" are two of the tales Chaucer
writes in The Canterbury Tales. "The Pardoners Tale" It is told by a man who is deeply affected by
the sad tale of "The Doctor of Medicines tale", he uses the story to preach against those who are
blasphemous and gluttonous. "The Doctor of Medicine" is a story about a man whose daughter is
beautiful beyond belief and the greedy judge wants her at any cost. The judge's greed ultimately
leads to the daughters' demise. Both tales teach a valuable lesson regarding greed and lust and
morals, one may be a slightly better teacher though. This essay explains if the Pardoner is a more
effective teacher than the Doctor of Medicines tale. The Canterbury tales has a tale within that is
told about a physician called "The Doctor of Medicine". This tale is about a man named Virginius.
Virginius is a knight who has one daughter she is a beautiful young virgin who also is very virtues.
The corrupt town judge, Apius sees her one day and decides he will do whatever it takes to get her.

Two Friends Short Story
Those who do not betray their countrymen show courage compared to the cowards who do. The
short story, "Two Friends," takes place in Paris during the French–Prussian war. As the story
progresses the author Guy de Maupassant, lets the two friends determine their fate. The friends
either disclose the password and betray their country, or they get murdered by the Prussians. If the
friends choose to save their own lives and give up the password, their country would get attacked
from the inside meanwhile trying to survive attacks from the outside. Many countrymen would die
and those who survived would be taken prisoner. If the two friends do not disclose the password,
they would also not have to deal with the pain of losing family and friends. In addition, they saved
their country by not giving the password to the officer. Finally, the two friends would be providing a
chance of a life without hunger or fear to the people of France. Therefore, the two friends should not
give up the password, even if it means death. The first reason is they would not have to deal with the
pain of losing family and friends. In the story, the Prussians were "occupying part of France,
looting, committing atrocities, [and] reducing people to starvation" (Maupassant 172). Therefore,
many people were killed and many others were captured and held prisoner. Hence, if the characters
did not give the password to the officer they would die thus they would not have to feel the grief of

In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different
perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of
narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far
less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good
example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's
shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of
writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story,
readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another
interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other
character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because

Comparison Of Two Creation Stories

  • 1. Comparison Of Two Creation Stories Daniyar Sadyk Paper #1; Topic #4 1+1: Completion and Justification Creation stories have shaped the way people come to see gender relations. While some have formed egalitarian viewpoints, most of the people have supported hierarchical notions. The reason for this division is the existence of two different creation stories that are contradicting each other. And the real question is not if there are differences or not. But if there is a purpose to these differences? Indeed, there is. First, men have used Creation 2 to justify their actions and to keep the "patriarchal system" working. Second, these two stories simply complete each other. With the second story, Genesis became an excuse for men to rule over the women. In the first story, God creates everything in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Genesis 1 has a broad outline which shows how God created the Earth. The author gives a general account of the creation. Genesis 1 does not have any detailed information in it, but rather some overview on what happened. However, people want to know not just how our world was created, but also how exactly humankind came to life. And Genesis 2 successfully explains how God created man from the dust, and woman from the man's ribs. It has many details that the first story does not. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that the first story is more chronological and general, whereas the second one is topical. The first story summarizes the whole process, while the second is more specific about man and his environment. Moreover, the second story could never be the only creation story because it does not have a sufficient information needed to explain how God created the Earth. For example, there is no mention of the creation of the day and night. There are no explanations how the oceans and fish were generated. Clearly, these two stories are complementary as they are supplying each other's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Comparison of Two Short Stories by Tobias Wolff and T.C Boyle From the weekend fishing trips to complete hatred and denial, father–son relationships can be characterized by many good and bad experiences. After reading the two short stories "Powder" by Tobias Wolff and "If the River was Whiskey" by T.C. Boyle, which both feature father–son relationships that are placed under a large amount of stress. There are many similarities and differences between these two relationships that are not apparent upon just a cursory glance. A father can be completely inconsiderate of his sons needs or try his best to meet them and still create turmoil within the relationship. After reading Wolff's short story "Powder," one can conclude that the father tries quite hard to make his son happy. In this story the father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The wife attacks the father by saying, "We've been here two weeks and you haven't done one damn thing with him, nothing, zero. You haven't even been down to the lake. What kind of father are you?" (231). Seeing his parents in such an argument affects the son by making him disconnected and hateful toward his father. When the son came home from school he would find his father "sitting in the dark, hair in his face, bent low over the guitar. There was an open bottle of liquor on the coffee table and a clutter of beer bottles" (231). Coming back to this dreary home life after school and seeing one's father in this condition would be very traumatic. It shows him that his father doesn't care about his job and would rather be at home drinking while reminiscing about his past. The relationship between them finally took a turn for the better when his father put down the bottle and decides to go fishing with Tiller and spend some quality time with him. Boyle explains Tiller's excitement by saying "It was too much for him all at once––the sun, the breeze that was so sweet, the novelty of his father rowing, pale arms and a cigarette clenched between his teeth, the boat rocking, and the birds whispering––he closed his eyes a minute, just to keep from going dizzy with the joy of it" (233). At this point, one can see ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Flannery O Connor's Two Story I am going to mention about Flannery O' Connor's two stories in my essay. One of them is ''The Life save may be your own'' and the other is '' A good Man is Hard to Find''. I will talk about Flannery O' Connor's' stories' summary and my opinions about that. Firstly I am starting with summary of O' Connor's ''The Life Save may be your own'' Story starts with an elderly women and her daughter. After that one of the men come up their road named Mr. Shiftled. He starts smoking and during the conversations, they decided to make an arrangement. Mr. Shiftled starts to work around the farm in return of some food and shelter. They continue their talking about marriages. Mrs. Crater asks him that he are married or not and after that she wants to marry with her daughter but he refused this. Even though he refused to marry with her at first than he lied for car than he accept to marry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ''The life you save may be your own'' In my opinion in this story our characters are important. Mr. Shiftled had a big chance to save his life but he didn't do this. He is selfish that he accept the marriage but not for Lucynell. His life could be better but it couldn't. I think Mrs. Crater is not a good mother because she wants a sudden marriage with one she never knew. But the important point of the story is about the boy and Mr. Shiftled. And the story ends with Shiftled prayerfull shout. So he tries to be clean in the world but he gets into a rut both genuine and metaphorically meaning. I am continuing with the second story analysis; I think out main character ''grandmother'' is a religious and moral person and she is little bit selfish. She wants everything to be her own way. She has strong religious believes like our novelist O' Connor. O' Connor has a strong believer to Christianity. While grandmother was dying, she seems like closer to God. Also an angel figure. But we don't find it realistic. Because her touching is just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bouncing in my seat, we ride the ferry taking us out to Bald Head Island. Michael and Nicholas' faces show as we approach the shore. Their arms wave wildly, their hands flapping in the air. Every year, since we moved from Charlotte to DC, we visit them. My sister Anna is two years older than me and went to play group with Mike and Nick., For me it's a little tough fitting in with the older kids. For me to truly participate in the games, I have to push a little harder to be accepted. Most years we do the same activities, the games only differ a little as we get older. When you walk into that room, there are two sets of bunk beds, and clothes cover the floor. Anna and Michael always claim the top bunks, and Nick and I each have a bottom. Almost immediately after we arrive, Michael suggests his favorite game. This consists of hitting Nick with ugly dolls by throwing them at the fan, and having them fly off and hit him. This game quickly evolves into a violent dodgeball game with stuffed animals that can only be compared to the Hunger Games. Commonly I don't want to participate in the reckless games that we normally do, because I am younger and as a result I become injured quite a bit. I don't admit this to the older kids because all I want to do is play with my best friends. The game tends to come to a close when someone falls off the top bunk, which apparently, this time, was Nick. When we aren't wrecking the house, we go outside. Racing across the sand, we plummet into the water, the splash wars have begun. Next to come, sandcastle building and, what seems like endless laughter. Then, we come home, sand filling our swimsuits and sheeted to our skin, to rinse off in the outdoor shower. I pull the handle out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of The Story ' Red Convertible The Two Brothers ' In the short story Red Convertible the two brothers, as close as they are, you really never know how someone is or feels or acts unless you truly know what they've been through or if you are them and have gone through what they've been through. The brother have always been close they're whole life but the split really changes one. Lyman and Henry really have a true connection with each other. The car they bought together without really thinking twice about it and they shared it really just shows us that the brothers have a stronger bond then most because they were both broke they spent every dollar they had on the car, both of them. Another example in the story that shows us the bond they have is when they pick up Susie the hitchhiker and they ask her where to? And she says Alaska. The two brothers almost immediately say lets go, no second questions and in the new car they just got. They are both in sync with each other. The trip is really important to the relationship of Lyman and Henry because they get there and they stay for a little bit where the unpredictable growth of plants is just crazy and the cold weather but they bond through it and Susie's family puts up a tent in the backyard for them. Just in the matter of how they both are just friendly buys them a ticket to stay with Susie's family, the kids also just are always playing with them, that shows us that they are really great people to be around because of the friendly bond they have with each other. The fact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The 2 creation stories from genesis 1 and 2 were written or orally passed down around 1445 BC. It is believed by many conservative scholars to the present day, that genesis was written by Moses. Comparing the two different versions of the creation story I am going to be analysing these two sacred texts with research from historical information. • 8. Comparing Two Creation Stories In the book of Genesis, we are introduced to everything. From the creation stories to the sagas in between Genesis is an opening to the old testament and an opening to the book of exodus. This essay will contrast each creation story and describe each stories interest, explain how Genesis 12: 1– 3 links the stories of 2: 4b–11 with the ancestral narratives in 12–50 and connect the sagas of Abraham/Sarah, Isaac/ Rebecca and Jacob/ Racheal. The first creation story is found in Genesis 1– 2:4 and it explains how God created the world from a void of darkness in six days of work. On day one God made the heavens. On day two God made the sky. On day three God made land and sea. On day four God created time. On day five God made marine creatures. One ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the second creation story Gods interest was to find man a partner stating "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner" (Genesis 2:18). God attempted to bring every animal in creation to the man in hopes that they would fit as a good partner but they did not. The LORD than decided to make a creature for man to partner with stating "then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman" (Genesis 2:21–22) Thus making man a fitting partner. The calling of Abraham in 12:1–3 is shown as a bridge to link 2:4b–11 and the ancestral narrative of 12–50 because it explains the human problem and the divine solution. In Genesis 2:4b–11 God noticed that as mankind began to reproduce they became more and more wicked because of their selfishness and arrogance (Human Problem). God decided to wipe them out and start fresh stating "Now the Earth was corrupt in God's sight and the earth was filled with violence". Before God ended flesh he saved Noah and his family because of their holiness by allowing them to aboard an ark so that they could multiply the Earth with people of holiness. When Noah's family was told to be fruitful and multiply, Abraham was born by Noah's grandson Terah. This links to the ancestral narrative placed in 12–50 because they are consisted of ... • 9. Two Kinds of Interpretations in Amy Tan’s Short Story Two... Often times mothers can be pushy, annoying, and a bit overbearing but in the long run they always just want what is best for their child. Everyone wants their child to be the best, most popular and overall number one. In Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds" we see this type of fame hungry mother. The short story is about a Chinese family who lost everything. The mother had lost her entire family full of children except for the one in the story. With the belief "you could be anything you want in America" (Tan 305) in mind the mother set off to find what her child can do. This ultimately will resort in disappointment for both the mother and child, as they do not share the same goals throughout the short story. My initial personal interpretation of this piece is that the mother wants to live vicariously through her daughter. This was proven throughout the story time and time again. Through further thought, different literary techniques, and class discussion I became aware of an alternate interpretation of the story. This is that their are two kinds of daughters and the way the mother daughter relationship could be. Both interpretations have many examples to support them and the story can truly be analyzed in more then one way. The mother in the story is sensibly upset about what has happened in the past in China. After losing everything she wanted the best for her daughter, but could this possibly mean she wanted it for herself as well. It seems the mother might have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay on Compare and Contrast of Two Stories. Efrain Rincon Jr Professor Yuhas English – 6 6 May, 2013 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' and 'The Red Convertible' 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce and 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Erdrich both recount sorrowful tales of men during times of war. The stories differ in that 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is a story written in reverse, where the readers do not truly know the plot until the end– whereas 'The Red Convertible' is just a man recounting the story of his long lost brother. However despite their differences, both of the stories continue to build up hope in the reader only to find nothing but a sorrowful story at the end. 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce was a short story written ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The entire story was just a snapshot that occurred in his mind before his death. Ambrose Bierce purposefully continues to build the anticipation that the devout Union soldier had escaped, only to drop the reader into a tale of demise and overall doom. 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Endrich was written in 1984 and revolves around a Vietnam veteran and his brother. Lyman Lamartine is a young man whose brother has just returned from the Vietnam War and has been traumatized by what he had seen overseas. Before the war, Lyman and his brother Henry were extremely close. Before Henry departed for the war, and as Lyman recounts in the story, the two bonded over a red convertible. This car proves to be symbolic, both throughout, and at the end of the story, due to the change in Henry's behavior, illustrated by this quote from when Henry returns: "We had always been together before. But he was such a loner now that I didn't know how to take it." When Henry returns, he has no desire to ride in the red convertible, no desire to wear the bright colored clothes he used to dawn–– instead Henry just liked to sit around and sob about the war. The quote from the middle of the story, speaking about the television, and how Henry just sat "in front of it, watching it, and that was the only time he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two stories are "A Rose for Emily" written by William Faulkner and Guy De Maupassant's "The Necklace". Faulkner's book is about a woman named Emily Grierson's life and her horrible secret she hides. The other book is about a materialistic woman named Mathilde Loisel loses a fake necklace and find out to be a fake one after ten years later. Although these stories are written about fifty years apart and written from two different countries, these two stories have many similarities and differences. Also these items can reflect the strong symbolism in it. Faulkner used a rose, but De Maupassant used the necklace to represent the main character's emotions in two items. The difference in those symbols is that a rose has only appeared on the title but the necklace is the whole flow of the story. Faulkner leaves the reader to interpret the rose's symbolic meaning. The rose is usually a powerful symbol of love, it always has been, and portrays an everlasting beauty. Moreover, the rose has been used for centuries to illustrate an eternal type of love and faithfulness. Therefore, readers can infer the meaning that the rose present in the title, and portray it to Emily that she does not have love in her life. The necklace, however it is the important items that lead to the climax of the story. It is pretty but worthless, shows the awareness of appearance and real world. Also, the fake necklace shows Mathilde's desire to be something she is not. The last comparison about these two narratives about tone. The tone of two narratives is very ironic. There are many ironies to be found in "A Rose for Emily." One of the examples, when she is speaking with the Aldermen. They are trying to convince Emily to pay her taxes and she simply repeated a person's name who has been dead for ten years. The other story "The Necklace" also have many ironical quotes. • 16. Comparing The Two Creation Stories Michael Gugliotta 10/23/14 English 2 Honors Mrs. Salvatorelli The Similarities of the Two Creation Stories The story of Creation in the Bible begins with God creating a human in his own image, naming him Adam. He created a human to carry out his commandments and to be good. Then, God created Eve, a companion for Adam. Adam and Eve were persuaded by Satan, in the form of a serpent, and took a bite out of the apple that God told them not to eat. When God found out, they were banned from the Garden of Eden. In Mary Shelly's, Frankenstein, Victor constructs a monster as a template for a new race that would worship him. Unfortunately, Victor did not think past the moment of birth, and the monster, who should have been Victor's Adam, instead associated more with Satan. Unlike the creation story of Adam and Eve, the creation story of Frankenstein is one that goes horribly wrong due to the pursuit of knowledge. In Frankenstein, Victor creates the monster for selfish reasons. Victor did not know if reanimating life was possible, "but my imagination was too much exalted... to permit me to doubt of my ability of to give life to an animal as complex and wonderful as man" (57). The impression of Victor creating a creature in his own image relates to the story of Adam and Eve. God created Adam and Eve to bring new life to Earth. He also wanted them to carry out his laws and treat each other and everything they encountered with adoration and respect. Like God, Victor wanted his creature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"The Lottery" is a short story about an event that takes place every year in a small village of New England. The scene is being set as happy, upbeat and cheerful by the author's description of a sunny and peaceful day allowing the readers to believe that the story has a pleasant ending by describing the village buildings, objects and the village itself. As the readers push through the story they come to realize that something barbaric is about to take place. The author of this short story added an effective cover–up of irony. b. In the setting of "The Rocking–Horse Winner" the author used the real life geographic location of England which helps the setting to become essential; it sets the reader's experience to events that take place in actuality such as the horse races that occur in modern times. The fact that the horse races are real makes the readers relate to Paul's character without having to add more content. The story invites readers to oversee the events of a young boy's supernatural abilities while setting up the struggles of his mother whose heart is indifferent to the care and needs of her child. The author uses descriptions of the family's exterior dwelling, the servants and gardens to inform the readers of the characters view in terms of need and conflicting means to keep up with their neighbors. For centuries man has created this patriarchal society in which women have been treated as the lesser entity, having no sense of self–being or worth. These feelings led women to feel repressed in their everyday life. It was in the late nineteenth century when literary writers started to expose this female repression. Guy de Maupassant and Kate Chopin clearly express definitive examples of female repression in their stories, The Necklace and The Story of an Hour. In this passage, Mathilde was basting in her own beauty because it was of her own. During this time many women were forced into marriage, resulting in a great unhappiness. Both Kate Chopin and Guy de Maupassant state this lack of joy that was often experienced everyday by women. "It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long" (Chopin 68). If was as if Mrs. Mallard was sickened by the idea that her life and the way it was, would continue forever. Maupassant portrays Mathilde's frustration in her marriage with the frequent use of the word "suffered" in relationship to her higher class wants and desires. "She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries. She suffered from the poverty of her dwelling, from the wretched look of the walls, from the worn–out chairs, from the ugliness of the curtains" (Maupassant 59). Aylmer wants to remove something which is already existent, his wife's birthmark. In contrast, Dr. Rappaccini modified his daughter with the help of scientific methods from the moment she was born when he connected her life to the poisonous shrub in his garden. 2.1 The Role of the Wife and Daughter Just like the two scientists, the two female characters have several similarities to offer. Both, Georgiana and Beatrice are beautiful women which became victims of the scientific obsession of their husband and father. Georgiana is described as a beautiful woman and also Beatrice is characterized as "a young girl, arrayed with as much richness of taste as the most splendid of the flowers, beautiful as the day." After their description of beauty and pureness their 'mistake' is revealed. Georgiana carries a hand–shaped birthmark on her cheek, which was loved and cherished by her former lovers, envied by other women but hated by her own husband. Also Beatrice's dark character treats are revealed when the young Giovanni Guasconti observed her poisonous breath and her relationship to the mysterious shrub. Thus Beatrice can be compared to the flowers in Dr. Rappaccini's garden; she is beautiful but poisoned. At the end of the short stories both of the young females die and their former beauty and perfection are destroyed. While Georgiana dies after her husband tried to remove her birthmark, Beatrice dies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Getting married was more thought of than a University education for most people in the fifties. As the country developed through the decade, with the advent of the Cold War, and the emergence of the U.S. as one of the world's two superpowers, Americans were challenged to adapt and the importance of family and religion came very much to the fore. Civil Rights Movement was also a big deal during this time period. In 1954 the Supreme Court wrote that separate facilities for blacks did not make those facilities equal, and integration was yet birthed. Also many outside things were commuting and uprising, television dominated American culture during the 1950s, presenting a stereotype image of the happy, prosperous American family. This is famously known as "The American Dream." What was portrayed on television became accepted as normal. Families worked, played and vacationed together. • 34. In J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories”, there are two stories... In J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories", there are two stories that indicate a death, and, remarkably, these two short stories are what begin and end this captivating piece of literature. The first story is called "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and introduces a man who has been through the hell of World War II, which allows him to see things from a different perspective. The latter is called "Teddy" and revolves around a young, ingenious boy that seems to have a speculative mindset and very deep insight into life. In both stories the reader is introduced to a "genius", but the geniuses, with all the potentials at hand, end up going mad and killing themselves. However, this proves to be Salinger's point. It demonstrates a fine line that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Seymour takes his own life, we backtrack to his story and he is then seen as a celestial figure, ahead of his time and full of wisdom. Metaphorically speaking, the bananafish ideology depicts humanity in the postwar boom generation, where riches surround all people. However, amidst all the possessions, we cannot help ourselves and we continuously and relentlessly consume, regardless of what may happen as a result. We are each trapped in our own banana–filled hole, in which Seymour ultimately escapes from through his death. In the final short story "Teddy", the main character is a ten–year old boy who is as intuitive and intelligent as any character gets in this novel, with the exception of Seymour of course. Like Seymour Glass, Teddy sees the world differently than his peers. The two tend to focus their a lot of their attention on small details, such as orange peels, the colour of bathing suits, a woman that seemingly looks at Seymour's feet, and appear to mirror a larger–scale vision of humanity. Teddy's orange peels recall Seymour's bananafish. Both their objects, in Seymour's case an imaginary one, are somewhat allegorical in a sense that they seem to suggest a philosophical portrayal of humanity. To clarify, Teddy first notices the orange peels floating and finds them interesting. The remnants of what was once a living fruit, now floating, lifeless on the dark water. Later on he notes that, if he had not seen the orange peels, he would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Comparing Two Creation Stories Are there any similarities in the way that each society explains human origins? In comparison of the two stories the world started from the idea or ideas of several gods or god–like spirits. Each story is simplistic yet complex in its own way. Evidence  In the beginning of both stories there were many gods or god–like beings that decided to go forth on vast land and create something they could control or govern. Each world creation was started from a single god coming forward and starting each chain of events.  Both creation stories show every god coming together and working for a greater cause. Each god put forth effort to create things that would benefit the new world. In "The Golden Chain" each god gave gold to Obatala to go into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Short Story 'Two Fishermen' Capital Punishment within the short story 'Two Fishermen' 1) What is Capital Punishment and what was its history in Canada? Capital Punishment, also called the death penalty, is the execution of an offender sentenced to death as a punishment for a crime. In 1865, "crimes of murder, treason, and rape carried the death penalty in upper and lower Canada" (1, Susan Munroe) . Furthermore, in 1961, murder was classified into Capital and Non–Capital offenses. Capital murder offenses in Canada were intended murder and murder of a police officer, guard or warden in the course of duty and "had a mandatory sentence of hanging" ( 1, Susan Munroe). To add on, in 1962, the last executions took place in Canada. Arthur Lucas, convicted of the intended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the short story 'Two Fishermen' by Morley Callaghan, Thomas Delaney is man being sentenced to death by hanging for murdering Matthew Rhinehart who molest his wife. If this story's setting is based in Canada, it would most likely happen between the 1930 and 1960's as crimes for murder carries out with the death penalty during this time period. Throughout history, capital punishment is an extremely debatable subject. In the 19th century, hanging is a common punishment that is used for serious offenses such as treason or murder. There is usually sympathy for the person being hanged but the hangman is often jeered by the crowd. To showcase the setting, the story indicates the utilization of automobiles for example, at the end of the story the "sheriff pulls [Smitty] into the automobile" (8). Also, the description of Smitty's attire by dressing "in a long black cut away coat with grey striped trousers and a gate ajar collar" (7) shows the fashionable style during that time. To add on, the author does not mention the use of technology, however, Callaghan indirectly describes the road conditions that consist of white gravel instead of pavement. An example of this is when the fisherman throws fish at Smitty, resulting for the fish to land in "thick dust in front of him, sending up a little cloud" (8). Another example of this is at the end of the story when Smitty gets into the automobile and the car drives "forward in a cloud of dust" (8). This demonstrates the white gravel consistency of the roads at that period of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. A Tale Of Two Moral Stories A tale of two moral stories Geoffrey Chaucer was a great author of the 12th century. He was known as the father of English poetry. Chaucer is the author of the famous work "The Pardoner's tale"., the book is a collection of short stories. "The Pardoners Tale" and the "The Doctor of Medicine" are two of the tales Chaucer writes in The Canterbury Tales. "The Pardoners Tale" It is told by a man who is deeply affected by the sad tale of "The Doctor of Medicines tale", he uses the story to preach against those who are blasphemous and gluttonous. "The Doctor of Medicine" is a story about a man whose daughter is beautiful beyond belief and the greedy judge wants her at any cost. The judge's greed ultimately leads to the daughters' demise. Both tales teach a valuable lesson regarding greed and lust and morals, one may be a slightly better teacher though. This essay explains if the Pardoner is a more effective teacher than the Doctor of Medicines tale. The Canterbury tales has a tale within that is told about a physician called "The Doctor of Medicine". This tale is about a man named Virginius. Virginius is a knight who has one daughter she is a beautiful young virgin who also is very virtues. • 38. Two Friends Short Story Those who do not betray their countrymen show courage compared to the cowards who do. The short story, "Two Friends," takes place in Paris during the French–Prussian war. As the story progresses the author Guy de Maupassant, lets the two friends determine their fate. The friends either disclose the password and betray their country, or they get murdered by the Prussians. If the friends choose to save their own lives and give up the password, their country would get attacked from the inside meanwhile trying to survive attacks from the outside. Many countrymen would die and those who survived would be taken prisoner. If the two friends do not disclose the password, they would also not have to deal with the pain of losing family and friends. In addition, they saved their country by not giving the password to the officer. Finally, the two friends would be providing a chance of a life without hunger or fear to the people of France. Therefore, the two friends should not give up the password, even if it means death. The first reason is they would not have to deal with the pain of losing family and friends. In the story, the Prussians were "occupying part of France, looting, committing atrocities, [and] reducing people to starvation" (Maupassant 172). Therefore, many people were killed and many others were captured and held prisoner. Hence, if the characters did not give the password to the officer they would die thus they would not have to feel the grief of losing important ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories–– Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct. In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy. In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because ...
