Counselor Regulations
Counselors face many different obstacles on a day to day basis. There are so many rules and
regulations that apply to them. As counselors we must be aware of these rules and regulations. This
paper will take a closer look at what is required in the state of Michigan to be a counselor.
In Michigan it is required that the individual that wants to counsel someone have at least a master
degree in a related field. There are more requirements than just getting a degree. Once the individual
gets a master degree that reflects CACREP curriculum then they have to pass the national counselor
exam, do no less than 600 hours for an internship, at least 3000 hours in the field (not less than two
years time), and 100 hours of supervision with guidance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The exams are the NCE which is given by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).
The other exam is the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) Examination.
(University C. , Unknown).
In order to become a LPC one has certain conditions that must be met. These conditions are to earn
your counseling degree from a CACREP affiliated college and pass a criminal background check.
There are additional requirements such as collect the mandatory hours to complete the supervised
experience requirement. Then one has to apply to take the NCE as administrated by the NBCC.
Then one has to submit an application to the Michigan Board of Counseling to receive their LPC
title (Michigan LPC Counselor Certification/MI Counseling, Unknown).
In order to go from a LLPC to a LPC one must complete the 3,000 hour supervised counseling
experience. To become a LPC one must have a master's degree or higher in counseling from a
CACREP accredited college and a minimum of 48 semester hours and a 600 hour internship. This
may not seem like such a big difference but imagine the difference that the semester hours along
with the supervised hours make (Michigan LPC Counselor Certification/MI Counseling,

School Counselor Interview
Making the decision to make a difference
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor "the
employment of school and career counselors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024,
about as fast as the average for all occupations. Increasing school enrollments should lead to
employment growth of school and career counselors".
Having the opportunity to interview Feliza Martinez, a University of California, Irvine graduate
with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a California State University, Long Beach graduate
with Masters of Science in Counseling gave me a perspective of the type of work that she does as an
elementary school counselor. We both come from the same background and have face challenges ...

The interview made me reflect about what I want to and why. If I want to become a school
counselor then that would require education beyond a bachelor degree. I had always picture myself
having my own classroom and returning to Kern County to empower and teach students. After
talking to a few social workers in Kern County I became interested in the field, but that would
require me to attend a graduate program. After graduation I could see myself working in the
education field whether is it counseling students or teaching them I know that I will be making a

The Importance of School Counselors
A school counselor's role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their
counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include,
interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the
implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at
the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself
using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in
schools.
According to Carey and Dimmitt, it is essential for counselors to use evidence–based practice to
make sure they are able to ensure and improve student outcomes (2008). ... Show more content on

I find it this more reasonable and effective for a counselor to do. A research based program has done
all the work of creating a variable (experimental group) and a control group to show if a program's
effectiveness. This means the counselor can see the results of the experimental group and see if this
would work for the group intended. As mentioned by Carey and Dimmitt, research based
interventions ensure that the school's resources are invested wisely. This means, the counselor can
rely on the program and be able to predict positive outcomes.
Another method for a counselor to use science in their practice is to make sure the intervention or
program used has strong research support. While many may not hold strong support to be shown to
be effective, a counselor must evaluate its effectiveness for the students. I find this part of science
more difficult for counselors to implement due to time constraints and resources. While there may
be many programs out there, not all may be ideal for all schools. The counselor can experiment and
see if works well for the intended students or perhaps continue to find more research to back up the
program. Often times, this leads to counselors developing their own programs or curriculum but
their outcomes be unknown and not as valid as solid research based programs. Therefore, if the

I believe the next important ingredient for multicultural competence is cultural skills. A skilled
counselor utilizes the interventions that are client based and which serve clients needs. A positive
reaction would be to be connected to those different cultures communication is the key. In
multicultural counseling the counselor needs to be more aware his or her limitations in counseling
skills. I feel it's vital to have cultural skills in order to serve multicultural populations in the most
productive way to facilitate. By being culturally aware and recognizing how culture will affect the
counseling process, this cultural awareness will support the counselor in developing an empathic

School Counselors job isn't to teach students moral rules and values or to prevent students from
making their own choices based on their values. Admittedly, it can be a fine line to walk between
not imposing our values yet helping students develop social skills and self– understanding that will
enhance their efforts to become successful adults. In the leadership role it's not up to the counselor
to fix all problems. All through the years the role the school counselors play in using information
uniquely available to them to examine and change current policy and practice. Whether it be course–
taking patterns, student placements, or student success and failure rates, school counselors are
poised to be key change agents within the school. That is a big job that I feel school counselors don't
get credit for enough. Many times, school counselors are told what to do by administrators who fail
to understand the contribution the school counselor can make to the school. If anything that I feel I
disagree is that credit that the counselors don't get. Some of the duties that have historically been
assigned to the school counselor are data entry; clerical record keeping; registration and scheduling
of all new students; coordinating or administering cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests;
responsibility for signing excuses for students who are tardy or absent; performing disciplinary
actions; sending students home who are not appropriately

Title of Paper
In order to do a proper analysis on a school counselor one must know what he or she does on a daily
basis. This is to conduct a job analysis for a school counselor and discuss how it will be used within
the school system. Next to determine the reliability and validity of the school counselor analysis.
Then the performance and appraisal methods that apply to being a counselor will be evaluated.
Finally the benefits and vulnerabilities of each performance appraisal method will be explained.
This will provide a full job analysis of a school counselor and what their job entails.

The more students the counselor sees the more of them can get back to their everyday lives and
living happy and everyone will leave them alone. This could even result in less bullying in the halls
and after school. The ways that the subjective measures of job performance can evaluate ones job
performance is in the graphic rating form which assesses individuals on several dimensions of
performance. This is like rating your job performance on a scale of one to ten. The boss may make a
performance rating on your job to tell the person how he or she is doing that week. The behavior
focused rating scale can be used to focus on ones behavior on the job. If a person has a good attitude
then they may get a good behavior score. If he or she has a bad attitude he or she may get a bad
rating on the behavior score. This depends on the way the person acts and behaves while doing his
or her job. Other members of the staff may also rate ones behavior on the job. This will help the
boss determine if they are getting along with you or if he or she is causing trouble or are not well
liked among your fellow employees. They may make observations on ones performance as well. If
he or she is doing a good job a terrible job or just a good enough jobs then he or she can be rated on
that performance.

School Counselor Evaluation
"Evaluating the effectiveness of a professional development workshop to increase school counselors'
use of data: The role of technology" (2009) examined "the effectiveness of four variations of a
workshop designed to improve school counselors' data use skills. The workshops were designed to
vary along two dimensions; the amount of conceptual knowledge participants were exposed to, and
the amount of a technology application (EZAnalyze) participants were exposed to" (Poynton, 2009).
The study consisted of 144 participants split into four different groups. Group one simply received
training on the development of data driven counseling programs. Group two had all of the same
instruction as group one, but were introduced to an excel add–in program ... Show more content on

As a school counselor and a student of educational technology, I was both empathetic and frustrated
by the results. I believe heavily in a data driven school counseling program and the effect that it has
on student achievement and school accountability. I would have loved the idea that an accessible
data program would encourage school counselors to develop comprehensive counseling programs,
however, I absolutely appreciate the lack of time and limited technological knowledge that led to
failure of the program to sustain interest. Increasing professional development and access to the
technology can only go so far without the ability to use it. I thought it was interesting that there was
an anomaly in one school because the counselor supervisor had initiated a data driven goal for their
counselors. To me, this is where the school needs and the counselor needs should focus attention. If
the school administration is fundamentally involved in also seeing that the school counselor be data
driven, then the use of technology will most certainly be employed. School counselors today have
been overwhelmed with many tasks that draw from their time spent on direct student services.
However, school administration that advocates for the availably and education of school counselors
to utilize technology to evaluate student data has the ability to make that process more attainable.
Fundamentally the school directive has to be instrumental in connecting the two for the

School Counselor
Introduction "Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career
decisions and problems" ("Counselors" 1). "While helping students plan for college and careers is
part of their job, a guidance counselor's overall function is to talk to students, give advice, listen to
problems, help students develop coping skills and learn to become good problem–solvers and
decision–makers on their own" ("Guidance Counselors"). Specifically, school counselors play a
major role in the social, emotional, and academic development of their students. This profession
interests me for two reasons. First of all, I like to talk with people of all types. Second of all, I am

Scenario Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor is to successfully reach the child where they are and to find ways that
will help benefit them to succeed no matter what comes their way. As a counselor it is important to
use methods and techniques that work best in the situation that is presented as well as what works
best for that student. It takes careful consideration on which direction to go when counseling
students as all students are not the same and everyone handles things different. The focus of the
counselor is to provide guidance, support and direction for all students.
In the following scenarios we see two very different situations that need to be addressed in very
different ways. The first scenario is a young boy, named Steven. He has been in three different foster
care homes, and two different schools and is currently in 1st grade, he was pulled from his previous
school where his sibling still go. The teacher complains of his behavior, lack of focus and disruption
to the rest of the class. The teacher has referred Steven to the counselor to get him further help in
managing his classroom behavior. The second Scenario is a young girl in ninth grade, named Abby.
Abby lives with her mom and two biological brothers. Mom works two jobs just to get by and Abby
spends most of her time home alone with her brother, helping care for them. Abby is struggling
academically, missing a lot of school, and is often seen alone. Abby has always succeeded really
well in school and now things are

My Career As A Counselor
It is going to be hard for me to write about my career because at this moment I am in the middle of
switching them. For the past four years I have felt called to be a counselor. I can understand
teenagers, which is what I wanted my counseling group to be, more than anyone. I felt called to
counseling because I wanted to use my past trials and mistakes to help others. I felt like that was the
only way I would be able to serve God. I felt if I did not stay with my career in counseling that I
would be betraying God because I was not directly showing His light to others through my career. I
did not waiver from that field of study because I was scared. I did not open up myself to every
option available. What I did not realize was that there does not have to be a specific way I show
exemplify God in my life. It never occurred to me that every calling and vocation exemplified God
because He was the one that gave me the ideas! After taking the Strengths Assessment and listening
to the lectures on vocation and calling, I better understand how I am supposed to understand my
career.
The first message of the vocation lectures that stuck out to me was the idea of the idolatry of choice.
I completely agree that we, as Christians, sometimes get caught up in the process of decision–
making. We should allow God to make our final decisions. I also think, though, that God puts in our
hearts desires and dreams that match up with our strengths. He does not want to stumble around

PRINCIPLE A: COMPETENCE Counselors, Pastoral care givers, and help givers should acquire
the requisite education, which will equip them to practice the profession of their calling. Counselors
should take on clients who fall within the area of their competence– areas in which they have
acquired qualifying training techniques, experience and education; otherwise the case should be
referred to other competent professionals. Counselors/helpers should seek to maintain competence
by assessing and making use of current professional information, techniques, literature,

According to BLS, a master's degree is required, as is completing a certain number of training hours

seen in the assessment that draws the personality types from Holland's theory, my personality
closely aligns with what employers desire in school counselors (123test, 2017). Employers desire
someone who can interact with others and help them solve problems, which aligns with social and

Counselor 's Assessment
In the lives of counselor's assessment plays a great role. Assessments are what shows the counselor
what it is that their client is in need of help in. Like our book states, assessment is a complex,
problem solving process that allows us to collect information in order to better serve our client
(Drummond, Sheperis, & Jones, 2016). I was not aware of how involved counselors are in the
testing process until I began this class. I now see that assessments also helps the client understand
their own problems as well, it is just up to us to help them interpret the assessment. When using
various assessments in counseling, we have to be aware of our clientele and culture we are working
in. As counselors, we are to be conscious of controversies in assessments such as privacy invasions,
bias test, and even the pressure of the assessment of the children. We are there to help alleviate and
to insure these problems do not come to rise. Statistics in assessment is important because it enables
us to keep track of how well or below average a student or group of students are doing. Statistics is
the number report that we are able to visually see. Culturally, we would need to be aware of the
customs, traditions, and values. We need to be mindful of each student or client's uniqueness and be
sure we are equipped with the knowledge to help them through the assessment. Through the code of
ethics and the legal issues we are able to follow certain standards to prevent insulting or malpractice.

Advocacy Competences of School Counselors
Advocacy is one of the major roles for professional school counselors. The concept of advocacy is
the tradition of professional counselors, but the role of advocacy in school counseling was not
valued until the recent times. The purpose of this paper is to give a reflection about the article on
school counseling in order to show and describe the advocacy competencies of school counselors.
The article was written by Jerry Trusty and Duane Brown. The article was set to provide a structure
that helps to conceptualize advocacy in order to develop advocacy competencies. School counselors
have a key role in advocating for academic success for each student in the school. The advocacy
makes the counselors have a leadership role in encouraging and promoting school reforms. The
advocacy efforts of school counselors aim to eliminate obstacles preventing the development of
students and to create chances for all students to learn. It also aims to ensure students have access to
the school curriculum that fits their needs. School counselors collaborate with other people within
and outside the school to assist students meet their learning needs. In addition, advocacy promotes
positive and systematic change in schools (Trusty & Brown, 2005). The advocacy competencies
according to Trusty and Brown's article were designed from literature reviews, personal experiences
as school counselors. They categorized them into three groups, that is, counselor's dispositions,
knowledge and skills.

counselors to be aware of our role in the students' life. We play a big role in their development of
different areas such as personal development, career/academic development, and social

Crisis Counselor Skills
Skills, Knowledge, and Training Required for Crisis Counselors
When counselors choose to be on a disaster response team they need to be aware of the skills and
knowledge that is required for the job. The first thing that counselors need to be aware of is the
burnout rate of being a disaster counselor. According to Sommer (2008), there is four components
that a clinician needs to be an effective disaster counselor. First the clinician needs to have a vast
knowledge and training in trauma based counseling, pay attention to all aspects of treatment the
conscious and the unconscious, have a reciprocated reverence for the interpersonal climate. Lastly,
possess the knowledge of the educational components dealing with secondhand trauma. The same ...

Counselors are very important during this time to help counsel the loved ones of the person that lost
their life in the disaster. Bender (2002) suggest that this leaves the family not able to have a
traditional funeral, especially if the body cannot be found.
When dealing with grief clinicians need to actively listen to their clients, provide empathy and
openness, and make sure the client is in a situation that is nonjudgemental. Clinicians needs to be
trained in these techniques when dealing with disasters that involve death. Clinicians also need to
reassure clients that it is okay to vent the uncomfortable feelings the person maybe feeling.
Another approach that clinicians needs to be trained in is utilizing the community and training them
to help foster comfort to people that are suffering from the disaster. According to Henley, Marshall,
& Vetter, (2011) the people in the community (such as teachers, law enforcement etc,) can help
people with problem–solving skills and coping skills if the correct training from a mental health

A Interview With A Counselor Essay
When attempting to locate a School Counselor to interview, I decided to interview a counselor at a
local middle school located in Coal City, West Virginia. This interview will familiarize you with a
School Counselor by the name of James Payne. You will gain a better understanding of his
counseling history, his theory on counseling in a school system, the beliefs he expressed regarding
the counseling profession and finally how he assists students on a daily basis.
Professional History
James Payne is one of two School Counselors at Independence Middle School located in Coal City,
West Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree at Concord University in Health and Physical
Education. Unlike most middle school counselors, Mr. Payne has a special history; He is currently a
Major in the United States Army. Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, Mr. Payne joined
the Army to serve his country. Mr. Payne was enlisted in the Army for around six years. He is still
active in the Army Reserves.
Following his military service, Mr. Payne decided to return to school to obtain his Master's degree in
School Counseling. Mr. Payne graduated with his Master's degree in Counseling from West Virginia
University. Mr. Payne taught Special Education for one year prior to becoming a counselor. His first
Counseling position was at East Park Elementary School in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Mr. Payne
has been counseling at Independence Middle School for the past two years. He

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is the division of the American Counseling
Association (ACA) that supports the development of professional school counselors. It published
the ASCA National Model (2012), which provides a framework for a comprehensive school
counseling program that includes four quadrants: Foundation, Delivery, Management, and
Accountability. The National Model also offers a detailed account of the role, function, and
competencies of professional school counselors. It specifically addresses how the proper use of
professional school counselors and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program

Additionally, research has been done that examines the perceptions of school counselor
effectiveness, as well as the usefulness of available supervision (Borders & Usher, 1992; Henderson
& Lampe, 1992). During a school counseling master's education program, there is ample
supervision, both on–site and through the university, during the practicum and internship field
experiences (Peterson & Deuschle, 2006; Studer & Oberman, 2006). However, it has been noted
that clinical supervision of school counselors post–graduation has not been utilized in the most
effective way (Linton & Deuschle, 2006). Several studies have examined the reason behind the lack
of effective supervision within a school setting. Some researchers suggest that there is incongruence
between the daily tasks of school counselors and models of clinical supervision most often utilized
(Luke, Ellis, & Bernard, 2011). There also appears to be limited research on whether school
counselor directors are being provided "best practices" methods of formal education and training for
their positions.
Although it is vital to continue to conduct research on the development of professional school
counselors, researchers must also allocate attention to explore what resources are needed to educate
and train a school counselor director to the standards set forth by ASCA and to determine whether
opportunities currently exist to receive this education and training.

Initial Post National trends and demographics have changed the role of the professional school
counselor in various ways over the years. Today's school counselor roles differ from that of
yesteryears. Change has taken form to reflect society's economy, demographics, and overall trends
relevant to that time period. Looking back to the inception of this career at the turn of the 20th
century, the main roles reflected a nation with an influx of European immigrants that lacked the
tools and resources needed for gainful employment during a time of the Industrial Revolution and
urbanization. To better meet the needs during this time period focus was mainly on vocational

These consisted of: student personnel administration; personnel work in industry; social work;
psychologists, working as clinicians and researchers; and mental health/psychiatry. The 1950s and
1960s really shaped the professional school counselor. For instance, the Civil Rights Movement and
desegregation were paramount in school counselors learning to work with racially and ethnically
diverse students (still cornerstone in today's school counselor's responsibilities). Another important
event that occurred during this era was the creation of the American School Counselor Association
(ASCA) in 1952. Carl Roger's client–centered therapy was also incorporated into the school
counselor program. By the 1960s, training in universities and with assistance from the National
Defense Education Act (NDEA), school counselors were better prepared in addressing things like
crisis–intervention, drop–out rates, and academic scheduling. During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s,
the profession continued to develop and strengthen. It was at this time that a concerted effort was
made in the fight against drug–abuse, child abuse, and the dropout rate (Erford, 2015; Sheparis,

The Role Of A School Counselor
The role of a school counselor has taken on numerous descriptions in the last decade. Although the
American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Texas Education Code (TEC) provide the
basic roles and responsibilities of school counselors, every school district and even campus has
modified that description to fit the needs of the campus. Every administrator, teacher, student, and
counselor may provide a different explanation of the role that counselors play in education.
Regardless of the role description or explanations provided by counselors themselves, the primary
focus of a school counselor is to "fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social
abilities" (Tex. Educ. Code § 33.006).
The role of a school counselor can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most challenging
aspects of being a school counselor is managing multiple duties (K. Hancock, personal
communication, August 19, 2014). K. Hancock is also the district testing coordinator, which
according to the ASCA, is noted as being an inappropriate counseling duty. The role of a school
counselor, in regards to testing, is to "interpret the results of these tests and to analyze them in
conjunction with multiple measures of student achievement" (ASCA, 2005). During testing season,
K. Hancock has to utilize her time planning and preparing for state assessments rather than focusing
on primary counseling roles. During this time, she must extend her work hours to ensure she is able

Today's professional school counselors have a pertinent role and responsibility in creating a safe,
caring, and positive environment for students and school staff. In this type of environment is where
students have the ability to thrive as teachers, parents, administrators and stakeholders seek to
promote the educational, personal/social, and career development of students. Although the goal can
seem like advantageous undertaking for most professional school counselors, it has been and will
continue to be the driving force of the profession's duties in schools. The majority of the school
counselor's duties often fall within the parameters of 3 categories that are discussed in Meral Atici 's

In the case of Atici's research study, nine school counselors in Turkey, who were identified as highly
effective in their work as school counselors and graduate student supervisors, had their types
counseling activities examined, as well as, their self–efficacy. Atici compared the quantitative
research previously mentioned to check for consistency and validity of the outcomes of her own
research.
Method
As mentioned previously, Atici's study is a qualitative study, focusing on the activities of school
counselors and their self–efficacy as they work in their roles with students, teacher, parents and
stakeholders. It should be noted that the nine school counselors volunteered to take part in the study
that was heavily reliant on interviews. Data for the research was collected from the interviews with a
tedious process of transcribing the interviews that averaged about 64 minutes per participant (Atici,
2014). The transcriptions were then evaluated by content analysis and that subsequently identified
three main categories of emphasis: guidance curriculum, responsive services, and counselor
perceptions regarding self–efficacy and collaboration with school staff. One of the main strengths
that the study projected was that the researcher had a thorough background knowledge of previous
related studies that would would give credence to her own work. Atici cited 25 research studies and
did an excellent work of sharing each one's relevance to her study,

scores) on a school or district's current college readiness practices, and examines annual progress

administrators, counselors, and students. This diagnostic tool measures and assesses the students on
1,100 different items that come from the following dimensions: Academic, Contextual Skills, Key
Cognitive Strategies, and Key Content Strategies. A study conducted by Lombardi, Conley, Seburn,
and Downs (2012) found the CCRD tool was extremely helpful to administration and other school
staff members in deciphering if first–generation, or underrepresented, students were college/career
ready. This assessment will be taken by the students at each school at the beginning of their junior
year of high school, beginning of their senior year, and at the end of their senior year. These three
scores on each assessment, will allow the researcher the ability to compare data points over an

myself is on the same track with the same interest, and motivation. However, while my interest falls
toward community settings or private practice, I interviewed a counselor who works at Cuyahoga
Community College on the east side campus. She has been counselor about 13 years. Prior to the
interview my understanding was, working as a counselor in a school stings, it would need to have
school counseling license. As she further explained it, as a LPC she is entitled to work in school

academically and socially. What other professionals are employed in this setting and what are their
roles at the agency? As we continued the interview, she talked about their services that they provide

Curthirds loves her job. She loves most the flexibility of being a counselor and being able to work
with different students. Her least favorite thing about being counselor is the non–counselor duties
the principal tries to put on her. She said she does advocate for her profession, but sometimes the
principal or other administrator doesn't want to listen that some duties are not part of being a
counselor. In her training in school for counseling she said that the course work was the foundation
of her profession, but she learned the most on the job. She said there was a few times she had to call
her professor or another school counselor to talk about what she should do in a situation. She said
that even though she has been in the profession for 17 years she still comes across some problems
where she needs to consult with another counselor. Her advice to me was to take advantage of all
training opportunities available and to build a relationship with the students as much as possible.
She said knowing about technology is also helpful. An important tip she offered me was to avoid
taking your work home with you. This meaning if you have a bad situation come up with a student
that hits you hard to avoid bring it home because it will reflect on your family and can affect your
mood and judgement. If it is something that is that bad that touches your heart to find an outlet. She
said she will call a fellow school counselor to consult and talk to or either journal about her feelings.

Counseling & Helping Relationships Serving students with different backgrounds, personalities, or
beliefs may not be the easiest thing to do, as their thought process may differ. Therefore, it is
essential for school counselors to find healthy ways to build on a school counselor–student
relationship. There are several characteristics or behaviors that I feel school counselors should have,
that helps them maintain a relationship with their students. Students can be more willing to open–up
their thoughts or accept suggestions when the school counselor is a good listener. A lot of the times,
we can think that we have to do all the talking, but is necessary to step back and listen at the
students first. Also, school counselors must be friendly and easy to approach. Students can feel more
comfortable with individuals they like and accept. In addition, it is essential for all school
counselors to appreciate diversity. It is important for school counselors to

Case Study #4 For School Counselor by Patrick Whaley
Problem Identification
The fact that school counselors work with minors plus this developmental stage can be crucial for a
child's emotional and mental development additionally, being aware of ethical standards and
dilemmas would also be important. In fact, the American School Counselor Association states in
section A.1.e (Supporting Student Development), "Are concerned with students' academic, career
and social/emotional needs and encourage each student's maximum development". In this current
case study, the school counselor has several things to be worried about as well as being worried
about this child's emotional and social well–being. The first problem was when the school counselor
did not avoid dual relationships due to privately counseling with his student's parents. The second
problem occurred when the school counselor did not report the abuse to the proper authorities
because even mental abuse should still be reported. The third problem could have been avoided if
the school counselor would have disclosed to the client's parent's thus avoiding a dilemma of failure
to disclose.

should have the followed the ASCA ethical standards in order to avoid this dilemma. The ASCA

Analytical Reflection
Introduction
As counselors approach their careers, it is important to make observations of local schools with
counseling opportunities. Observations help give a better understanding of the school culture and
demographics associated within that school. School Data has long been a method used to obtain
school specifics as well as the ability to compare and improve in areas needed. Schools all over
represent different demographics therefore making the statistic sway one way to another. One school
in particular that I was able to observe and get a feel for its culture was Columbia Elementary
School. Columbia Elementary School has one counselor shared between Mountain View Middle
School. The counselor at Columbia is in charge of kindergarten through fourth grade students.
Throughout my observation, I was able to see a multiple amount of counseling techniques. These
counseling techniques addressed multiple levels of behavioral issues among students. In my efforts
to gain as much information as possible I was also able to observe the counselor's efforts in
collaborating with school faculty, parents, as well as students.

consist of data that reveal information about thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and attitudes such as

conditions for fostering learning and positive youth development that results in productive and

if a school wants to improve their academic success with their students, the school must improve

Counselor Regulations

  • 1. Counselor Regulations Counselors face many different obstacles on a day to day basis. There are so many rules and regulations that apply to them. As counselors we must be aware of these rules and regulations. This paper will take a closer look at what is required in the state of Michigan to be a counselor. In Michigan it is required that the individual that wants to counsel someone have at least a master degree in a related field. There are more requirements than just getting a degree. Once the individual gets a master degree that reflects CACREP curriculum then they have to pass the national counselor exam, do no less than 600 hours for an internship, at least 3000 hours in the field (not less than two years time), and 100 hours of supervision with guidance ... These conditions are to earn your counseling degree from a CACREP affiliated college and pass a criminal background check. There are additional requirements such as collect the mandatory hours to complete the supervised experience requirement. Then one has to apply to take the NCE as administrated by the NBCC. Then one has to submit an application to the Michigan Board of Counseling to receive their LPC title (Michigan LPC Counselor Certification/MI Counseling, Unknown). In order to go from a LLPC to a LPC one must complete the 3,000 hour supervised counseling experience. To become a LPC one must have a master's degree or higher in counseling from a CACREP accredited college and a minimum of 48 semester hours and a 600 hour internship. This may not seem like such a big difference but imagine the difference that the semester hours along with the supervised hours make (Michigan LPC Counselor Certification/MI Counseling, ... • 3. School Counselor Interview Making the decision to make a difference According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor "the employment of school and career counselors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Increasing school enrollments should lead to employment growth of school and career counselors". Having the opportunity to interview Feliza Martinez, a University of California, Irvine graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a California State University, Long Beach graduate with Masters of Science in Counseling gave me a perspective of the type of work that she does as an elementary school counselor. We both come from the same background and have face challenges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The interview made me reflect about what I want to and why. If I want to become a school counselor then that would require education beyond a bachelor degree. I had always picture myself having my own classroom and returning to Kern County to empower and teach students. After talking to a few social workers in Kern County I became interested in the field, but that would require me to attend a graduate program. After graduation I could see myself working in the education field whether is it counseling students or teaching them I know that I will be making a difference in their ... • 5. The Importance of School Counselors A school counselor's role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include, interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in schools. According to Carey and Dimmitt, it is essential for counselors to use evidence–based practice to make sure they are able to ensure and improve student outcomes (2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I find it this more reasonable and effective for a counselor to do. A research based program has done all the work of creating a variable (experimental group) and a control group to show if a program's effectiveness. This means the counselor can see the results of the experimental group and see if this would work for the group intended. As mentioned by Carey and Dimmitt, research based interventions ensure that the school's resources are invested wisely. This means, the counselor can rely on the program and be able to predict positive outcomes. Another method for a counselor to use science in their practice is to make sure the intervention or program used has strong research support. While many may not hold strong support to be shown to be effective, a counselor must evaluate its effectiveness for the students. I find this part of science more difficult for counselors to implement due to time constraints and resources. While there may be many programs out there, not all may be ideal for all schools. The counselor can experiment and see if works well for the intended students or perhaps continue to find more research to back up the program. Often times, this leads to counselors developing their own programs or curriculum but their outcomes be unknown and not as valid as solid research based programs. Therefore, if the ... • 7. School Counselors I believe the next important ingredient for multicultural competence is cultural skills. A skilled counselor utilizes the interventions that are client based and which serve clients needs. A positive reaction would be to be connected to those different cultures communication is the key. In multicultural counseling the counselor needs to be more aware his or her limitations in counseling skills. I feel it's vital to have cultural skills in order to serve multicultural populations in the most productive way to facilitate. By being culturally aware and recognizing how culture will affect the counseling process, this cultural awareness will support the counselor in developing an empathic understanding towards clients. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... School Counselors job isn't to teach students moral rules and values or to prevent students from making their own choices based on their values. Admittedly, it can be a fine line to walk between not imposing our values yet helping students develop social skills and self– understanding that will enhance their efforts to become successful adults. In the leadership role it's not up to the counselor to fix all problems. All through the years the role the school counselors play in using information uniquely available to them to examine and change current policy and practice. Whether it be course– taking patterns, student placements, or student success and failure rates, school counselors are poised to be key change agents within the school. That is a big job that I feel school counselors don't get credit for enough. Many times, school counselors are told what to do by administrators who fail to understand the contribution the school counselor can make to the school. If anything that I feel I disagree is that credit that the counselors don't get. Some of the duties that have historically been assigned to the school counselor are data entry; clerical record keeping; registration and scheduling of all new students; coordinating or administering cognitive, aptitude and achievement tests; responsibility for signing excuses for students who are tardy or absent; performing disciplinary actions; sending students home who are not appropriately ... The more students the counselor sees the more of them can get back to their everyday lives and living happy and everyone will leave them alone. This could even result in less bullying in the halls and after school. The ways that the subjective measures of job performance can evaluate ones job performance is in the graphic rating form which assesses individuals on several dimensions of performance. This is like rating your job performance on a scale of one to ten. The boss may make a performance rating on your job to tell the person how he or she is doing that week. The behavior focused rating scale can be used to focus on ones behavior on the job. If a person has a good attitude then they may get a good behavior score. If he or she has a bad attitude he or she may get a bad rating on the behavior score. This depends on the way the person acts and behaves while doing his or her job. Other members of the staff may also rate ones behavior on the job. This will help the boss determine if they are getting along with you or if he or she is causing trouble or are not well liked among your fellow employees. They may make observations on ones performance as well. If he or she is doing a good job a terrible job or just a good enough jobs then he or she can be rated on that performance. School Counselor Evaluation "Evaluating the effectiveness of a professional development workshop to increase school counselors' use of data: The role of technology" (2009) examined "the effectiveness of four variations of a workshop designed to improve school counselors' data use skills. The workshops were designed to vary along two dimensions; the amount of conceptual knowledge participants were exposed to, and the amount of a technology application (EZAnalyze) participants were exposed to" (Poynton, 2009). As a school counselor and a student of educational technology, I was both empathetic and frustrated by the results. I believe heavily in a data driven school counseling program and the effect that it has on student achievement and school accountability. I would have loved the idea that an accessible data program would encourage school counselors to develop comprehensive counseling programs, however, I absolutely appreciate the lack of time and limited technological knowledge that led to failure of the program to sustain interest. Increasing professional development and access to the technology can only go so far without the ability to use it. I thought it was interesting that there was an anomaly in one school because the counselor supervisor had initiated a data driven goal for their counselors. To me, this is where the school needs and the counselor needs should focus attention. If the school administration is fundamentally involved in also seeing that the school counselor be data driven, then the use of technology will most certainly be employed. School counselors today have been overwhelmed with many tasks that draw from their time spent on direct student services. However, school administration that advocates for the availably and education of school counselors to utilize technology to evaluate student data has the ability to make that process more attainable. Fundamentally the school directive has to be instrumental in connecting the two for the accountability of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Scenario Of A School Counselor The role of a school counselor is to successfully reach the child where they are and to find ways that will help benefit them to succeed no matter what comes their way. As a counselor it is important to use methods and techniques that work best in the situation that is presented as well as what works best for that student. It takes careful consideration on which direction to go when counseling students as all students are not the same and everyone handles things different. The focus of the counselor is to provide guidance, support and direction for all students. In the following scenarios we see two very different situations that need to be addressed in very different ways. The first scenario is a young boy, named Steven. He has been in three different foster care homes, and two different schools and is currently in 1st grade, he was pulled from his previous school where his sibling still go. The teacher complains of his behavior, lack of focus and disruption to the rest of the class. The teacher has referred Steven to the counselor to get him further help in managing his classroom behavior. The second Scenario is a young girl in ninth grade, named Abby. Abby lives with her mom and two biological brothers. Mom works two jobs just to get by and Abby spends most of her time home alone with her brother, helping care for them. Abby is struggling academically, missing a lot of school, and is often seen alone. Abby has always succeeded really well in school and now things are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. My Career As A Counselor It is going to be hard for me to write about my career because at this moment I am in the middle of switching them. For the past four years I have felt called to be a counselor. I can understand teenagers, which is what I wanted my counseling group to be, more than anyone. I felt called to counseling because I wanted to use my past trials and mistakes to help others. I felt like that was the only way I would be able to serve God. I felt if I did not stay with my career in counseling that I would be betraying God because I was not directly showing His light to others through my career. I did not waiver from that field of study because I was scared. I did not open up myself to every option available. What I did not realize was that there does not have to be a specific way I show exemplify God in my life. It never occurred to me that every calling and vocation exemplified God because He was the one that gave me the ideas! After taking the Strengths Assessment and listening to the lectures on vocation and calling, I better understand how I am supposed to understand my career. The first message of the vocation lectures that stuck out to me was the idea of the idolatry of choice. I completely agree that we, as Christians, sometimes get caught up in the process of decision– making. We should allow God to make our final decisions. I also think, though, that God puts in our hearts desires and dreams that match up with our strengths. He does not want to stumble around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I believe that I have interests that line up with what the field is desiring in its employees, and the assessments I took back this up. My work history shows that I am willing to advance myself as a professional, and I have multiple influences that have prepared me for the requirements that a school counselor should follow. My decision on my career closely aligns with the trait–oriented theories, or more specifically, the John Holland Typology Approach. I feel that I was attracted to school counseling because of my personality traits, including the fact that I desire to help students achieve in the classroom and in their personal lives (Zunker, 2016). I believe that my personality and the expected work roles and environment align with each other very well, and so my career choice is congruent with my traits (Zunker, 2016). As seen in the assessment that draws the personality types from Holland's theory, my personality closely aligns with what employers desire in school counselors (123test, 2017). Employers desire someone who can interact with others and help them solve problems, which aligns with social and conventional categories found as described by Holland's theory (Zunker, 2016). • 28. Counselor 's Assessment In the lives of counselor's assessment plays a great role. Assessments are what shows the counselor what it is that their client is in need of help in. Like our book states, assessment is a complex, problem solving process that allows us to collect information in order to better serve our client (Drummond, Sheperis, & Jones, 2016). I was not aware of how involved counselors are in the testing process until I began this class. I now see that assessments also helps the client understand their own problems as well, it is just up to us to help them interpret the assessment. When using various assessments in counseling, we have to be aware of our clientele and culture we are working in. As counselors, we are to be conscious of controversies in assessments such as privacy invasions, bias test, and even the pressure of the assessment of the children. We are there to help alleviate and to insure these problems do not come to rise. Statistics in assessment is important because it enables us to keep track of how well or below average a student or group of students are doing. Statistics is the number report that we are able to visually see. Culturally, we would need to be aware of the customs, traditions, and values. We need to be mindful of each student or client's uniqueness and be sure we are equipped with the knowledge to help them through the assessment. Through the code of ethics and the legal issues we are able to follow certain standards to prevent insulting or malpractice. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and Texas Education Code (TEC) provide the basic roles and responsibilities of school counselors, every school district and even campus has modified that description to fit the needs of the campus. Every administrator, teacher, student, and counselor may provide a different explanation of the role that counselors play in education. Regardless of the role description or explanations provided by counselors themselves, the primary focus of a school counselor is to "fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities" (Tex. Educ. Code § 33.006). The role of a school counselor can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the most challenging aspects of being a school counselor is managing multiple duties (K. Hancock, personal communication, August 19, 2014). K. Hancock is also the district testing coordinator, which according to the ASCA, is noted as being an inappropriate counseling duty. The role of a school counselor, in regards to testing, is to "interpret the results of these tests and to analyze them in conjunction with multiple measures of student achievement" (ASCA, 2005).
