How Did John Lennon Get Guitar
I believe John Lennon would have eventually learned guitar even if his half–sister Jackie had never
showed him how to play banjo because John already played harmonica and was into painting and
poetry. Because John experienced one loss after another during his early life, he was angry, lost, and
insecure. I think Rock and Roll gave him an opportunity to release his built up aggression he held
from not being raised by a father and losing his mother shortly after they started to reconnect. Since
Paul McCarthy's father was a jazz pianist, I feel Paul was inspired and taught early in his childhood
to play piano. I believe Paul had the best childhood and his early piano experience helped him on
guitar because when he started playing guitar,

The Beatles Influence On The Art World
The Beatles were arguably one of the most influential bands that ever existed. The British Invasion
would export a new brand of music in the form of the Beatles. The 'fab four' from Liverpool would
effectively rip through America with their innovative, electric and revolutionary sound, capturing
the hearts of every hysteric young girl along the way. While the Beatles and their performance of
their hit song 'All My Loving' on the Ed Sullivan show in New York sent every girl into an intense
frenzy, they also effected the creative minds of todays culture. There was a sense of creative
freedom amongst artists who could treat pop music as an art form rather than conform to what
everyone else did previously. 'Beatlemainia' shaped a path of creative freedom for many bands in an
already rigid pop culture. The Beatles were instrumental in the ... Show more content on

This essay will discuss how the Beatles 'were the first pop musicians to challenge the clear
distinction between high and low cultural spaces, to treat pop music as an art world'.
The Beatles were a remarkable band; a band that had a positive contribution on society during a
time when rock n' roll was judged to be dangerous and even outdated. The Beatles' background had
a significant role to play in how the band was influential in later years. In 1956, John Lennon, a
local juvenile delinquent at the time, formed a local skiffle band with several school friends called
'The Quarrymen', suitably named after the school they attended, The Quarry Bank High School. The
band played at various parties and skiffle contests before Paul McCartney joined the band in 1957
after impressing Lennon at a local church concert. The following year George Harrison joined the
band under the recommendation of McCartney. However, at the beginning Lennon was reluctant to
allow the 14–year–old Harrison to join the group due to his young age. The

The Beatles
The Beatles are an English rock band that became one of the most iconic bands in history. All four
of the band members of the Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ring Starr
were born in Liverpool in the early 1940's. During this time England was in the midst of WWII and
they were deemed as "war babies". The shambles that England was left in cultivated skiffle from the
U.S. which was a form of music that made it fairly easy for nearly anyone to create a band from
very simple instruments like jugs and guitars. This resulted in the boys joining in this new Liverpool
craze. The simple manner of skiffle attributed to George Harrison starting up his career after he ...

The song, "Heartbreak Hotel", by Elvis opened the door to rock and roll for John Lennon. Elvis
Presley's success in rock and roll had set the model for the Beatles. The Beatles goal had become to
get even bigger than Elvis pushed them to do so in several ways. Secondly, both American rock and
roll and one of rock and roll's pioneers, Chuck Berry made a huge impact on the Beatles early on in
their careers. Considering much of the popular music at the time came from America this was not all
uncommon. The Beatles covered several of his songs like "Roll over Beethoven" and "Rock and
Roll music". You can hear his influence even in later songs such as, "Everybody's Got Something to
Hide Except Me and My Monkey", and, "Come Together" (1969). Berry's evidentially heavy
influence in, "Come Together", would later become an implication and John Lennon was sued for
using parts of, "You Can't Catch Me" which Berry released in 1956. In addition to covers, early as
when they were known as the Quarrymen, the Beatles had been playing Berry's songs in their shows
and throughout their career as a band, they performed no less than 15 of his songs.
Eventually, Chuck Berry would go on to inviting a very talented musician, Carl Perkins to tour with
him in 1964 in Britain. The impact of Carl Perkins not only reached the Beatles but also Elvis
Presley. After listening to Perkins' 1955 hit, "Blue Suede Shoes", the Beatles had been affected by

His family didn't have much money, so his mother worked as much as she could. Starr was a sickly

disease that caused him to live in the hospital for about two years. After he got out of the hospital, he
was fifteen years old. He was no longer required to go to school, so he decided to quit. He spent his
free time listening to music whenever he could. He enjoyed skiffle for a while, but then he learned
to play the drums. He fell in love with the drums. He joined a band, and gained his nickname

The History of the Beatles
The Beatles are known to many as one of the greatest bands of all time. Their music has influenced
many people, including the Queen of England, future musicians, parents, and teens. All four, Ringo
Starr, Paul McCarteny, John Lennon, and George Harrison, were knighted by the
Queen. The controversy of the statement made by John Lennon that "sparked protesters everywhere

Numerous musicians of today count the Beatles among of their inspirations. The modern rock band

He had an Irish heritage, and was "the son of a friendly local bus conductor" (Schaffner, 19). George
was only sixteen when he joined the band, which was, at that time, The Quarrymen. He was allowed
to join because John was very impressed that he could play "Raunchy," a popular song at the time,
note for note
(Lewisohn, 3). As soon as George joined, he, Paul, and John dropped out of school (Schaffner,
19).
This band had three guitarists, singers, and songwriters, but no bass or drums. After trying many
people, they finally settled on Pete Best on drums. They recruited Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, and
although he was a talented artist that John had met at school, he could hardly play his instrument
(Wiener, 4). The new band had no name, and their early inspirations were Buddy Holly, and the
Crickets. John created the name "Beatles," because "'I [John] was looking for a name like the
Crickets that means two things. From Crickets I went to Beatles... when you said it people thought
of crawly things, when you read it it was beat music.'" (Schaffner, 20). So the Beatles were born.
They began to play at a club called The Cavern in Liverpool, after a destructive tour in Hamburg,
Germany. Soon after this, Stuart became engaged and left the band. To compensate, Paul picked up
the bass and became the permanent bassist. After hearing the young Beatles at The Cavern,
Brian Epstein signed on as manager. Soon after, George Martin

Beatlemania: The Rise to International Fame
Believe it or not, on January 1st of 1962, the group known as The Beatles flunked their audition at
Decca Records in London, England. The label's executive, Dick Rowe, brushed them off like they
were nothing. He simply stated that "guitar groups are on the way out." Little did Rowe know, The
Beatles would soon conquer modern society and alter the course of pop and rock music. There have
been no other entertainers in the history of music that has been so popular, influential, or as
groundbreaking as The Beatles. In the early 1960's, their popularity was often called "Beatlemania,"
as thousands of screaming fans would crowd their concerts and sing–along with the Fab Four. They
sold over 600 million albums internationally and had 20 Number One hit singles – a Billboard
record that has yet to be broken. The band took over the entertainment media with music videos and
films, but also influenced sociocultural, political, and fashion movements throughout the sixties and
seventies. From experimenting with several different genres to incorporating classical elements into
their melodies, The Beatles still reign as one of the most creative and successful bands several
decades later. Today, fifty years later, The Beatles and their music are still engraved in the hearts of
many. The formation of The Beatles is a long, complicated story that many do not know of. The

1. What lasting affect did loosing Buddy Holly, Little Richard joining the ministry, Elvis going into

Pop Culture? The loss of these legendary singers with the death of Buddy Holly, the enlisting in the
Army of Elvis Presley, religious choice of Little Richard, the scandal of Jerry Lewis and
incarceration of Chuck Berry sent the entertainment industry into an unpredictable state of what
rock n roll would become. However, rock n roll remained a real thing, it continued to captivate and

The Egyptian Pyramids Essay
The Egyptian Pyramids
When most people think of Ancient Egypt they think of Pyramids. To construct such great
monuments required a mastery of architecture, social organization, and art that few cultures of that
period could achieve.
The oldest pyramid, the Step–Pyramids, grow out of the abilities of two men, King Djoser and
Imhotep. Djoser, the second king of 3rd dynasty, was the first king to have hired an architect,
Imhotep, to design a tomb (Time–Life Books, 74). Imhotep was known as the father of mathematics,
medicine, architecture, and as the inventor of the calendar (White, 40). He had a great idea of
stacking mastabas until they reached six tiers, a total of 60 meters high and its base 180 meters by

Just to move one block took the work of forty men. The daily life of the workers constructing the
pyramids was one of immense toil spanning over a long period of time. The quarrymen toiled away
with soft copper chisels that hardly made a dent in the limestone. Another team dug a network of
canals to transport the stones and food for the workers. Finally, another team of workers would haul
the massive blocks on wooden sleds and put them into position (Casson, 130–137). This great social
organization became the force that knit the country together.
Another important group was the artisans. They were the people who decorated the inside of the
pyramids. The artisans, also, brought a sense of social organization by the many processes it took to
produce a work of art. For instance, the actual sculpting of a statue was not considered a single
process, but as on process among many. The quarrymen had to quarry the stone with soft copper
chisels, and it was transported to a sculptor. After the sculptor was finished with it, the sculpture was
sent to another artisan. This artist would cut hieroglyphs in the statue. The hieroglyphs were about
the life of the person that the statue represented. Then, they would send it to a metal worker who
inserted the eyes and other details. Finally, the statue was

Music In Music, Music And The Music Industry
Music is an art, an expression, an industry, and most importantly a business. Davis Szatmary, author
of "Rockin' in Time," states, "[r]ock–and–roll has always been a business" (2014, p. xvi). Music
connects to my business major through its relations of marketing, management, and supply chain, or
distribution. Without these key components bands, labels, and technology may have never grown to
the heights its reached today. The biggest contender in music development, outside of its sound, is
the way the labels and managers chose to market their music and the artist. The best example of this
change is seen in the (now known as) Beatles. Starting out the Beatles were otherwise known as
Johnny and the Moondogs or The Quarrymen. Not only did their name change but so did their sound
and their style. The Quarrymen had a rockabilly sound and traveled to local bars to play. Later, as
the Beatles they had a more R&B style and a greaser look, which was again changed by their
manager Brian Epstein. Their new image was mods, a popular prep style in the United Kingdom.
(Gordon, 2017, "The British Invasion") This served them well and their fan base grew quickly. The
Beatles continue to change throughout their career, marketing themselves to match the times and the
new trends. Szatmary explains, "Though a business, rock music has engendered and has been
defined by rebellion, which manifested itself through a series of overlapping subcultures. Youths
used rock–and–roll as a way to band

The Beatles Impact On Rock And Roll Impact
The impact of The Beatles on the Rock and Roll Around 1960 in Liverpool, England four young
man, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr decided to form a rock band,
and they name it The Beatles. However, it all started in the late 1950s when John Lennon formed his
first band called The Black Jacks. The band was made up of classmates from the Quarry Bank
Grammar School in Liverpool, and after they started, then they changed their name to The
Quarrymen, to represent their school. They often played a kind of music called skiffle, which was a
mixture of folk, jazz, and blues which was popular in England at the time. In the summer of 1957 a
member of the band introduced Lennon to Paul McCartney, and Paul who was very passionate about
music auditioned for the band, after he was invited to join the band in late October, 1957. In the next
year 1958, Lennon decided to make some change because he wanted the band to be a more like a
Rock and Roll Band. Some member of the band left because they did not like Lennon's idea to the
band style. The Quarrymen separated in 1959, but they reunited when McCartney introduce Lennon
to his old friend Harrison. Harrison at that time had another band, but it did felt apart too. Later they
met with Pete Best whose mother owned a Coffee Club. They made some change and McCartney
became one of the guitar player, Pete Best the drum player, and now they played more like a Rock

The Explosion Of Rock N ' Roll Era
The explosion of Rock n' Roll in the mid–1950's helped bring to the forefront of American society
the idea that social, cultural, and musical change was deeply needed. By 1959, the initial success
and jolt of the Rock n' Roll era, that took the American youth by storm three years earlier, had
officially fallen apart at the seams. The late 1950's and early 1960's marked a period of decline for
the Rock and Roll genre. The parting of Elvis Presley for the military in 1958, the death of Buddy
Holly and two other members of The Crickets in 1959, and the departure of the other members of
Rock and Roll's "Big Five" throughout much of the late 1950's had devastated America's hope for
social and musical change (Ashton Lecture). With this breakdown of Rock n' Roll, came an era that
was once again dominated and mesmerized by the Jazz, Pop and Country Western genres. The Rock
and Roll flame that captivated so many American citizens throughout much of the 1950's was slowly
beginning to dwindle back into the darkness. As all hope seemed to be lost, a new dawn for Rock
and Roll was gradually appearing. In 1963–1964 with the introduction of a small British band from
Liverpool, England, the dawn that everyone was waiting for had finally arrived and with it would
change Rock n' Roll history forever.
The Beatles, for many people, was one of the greatest Rock n' Roll bands to ever live. Throughout

The Music Of The Beatles
The word music is a singular noun that has intense connotations. It can spell out emotions, fortify
memories, and constitute happiness. While the grading of music can be considered subjective, one
band, titled the Beatles, obviously did something right. With their wide range of beats, and
spellbinding lyrics, the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon. The framework that transitioned
the Beatles into a small town band to a music icon/symbol can be analyzed by observing a wide
range of conditions. These conditions can be located by diving into the parts that made up the
Beatles. Let's start off with John Lennon who at a young age was interested in a music genre called
skiffle and later began forming a band called the Quarrymen in 1955 one of the influences for his
name came from his school called Quarry Bank High School. [3] A year after the start of the
Quarrymen, Lennon met Paul McCartney and the two began working together composing songs,
starting groups before the Beatles, and meeting the other members. Before meeting Lennon, Paul
McCartney inherited his interest in music from his father. He learned to play the piano and the
trumpet from his father. Not only this, but McCartney was influenced by American rock and roll in
the 1950's. McCartney attended Liverpool Institute and became acquainted with George Harrison.

great friendship with. Since the start of their friendship they began

'Lead Belly In The Song Pick A Bale Of Cotton'
The song "pick a bale of cotton" is a traditional American folk field song, sung more than likely by
slaves, whose real origins are lost. The most known version of this piece was recorded and
performed by huddle William Ledbetter more commonly known as Lead Belly to keep their stories
alive and to relate to his own experiences of picking cotton. The lyric plays a major role in
conveying the message in the song. its original lyrics were criticized as being racist and reminiscent
of the slave period in American history but the lyrics were amended. The lyrics "Jump down, turn
around to pick a bale of cotton /pick a bale a day" which repeated numerous times in the songs
shows how repetitive the process of picking cotton is.it also mentions picking a bale in a day which
is an unthinkable job to do. Lead belly took a song of hopelessness and turned it into a song of
determination, of proving the impossible possible. This was a message that proved to resonate with
the working class particularly the southern blacks as they identified with the lyrics. ... Show more

the piece begins with him talking with him picking the guitar in the background and then he starts to

The Importance Of Human Physical Strength In The Ancient...
Humans in the ancient world definitely took advantage of their physical strength. Five great
examples of this are: building roads, quarrying, operating cranes, digging wells, and constructing
tunnels. All of these tasks could only be completed with an immense amount of endurance and
strength. Anything from laying rocks to digging out an entire tunnel was a difficult and grueling
task. In many cases, a great deal of human physical strength was required to fully exploit the
technologies and technical practices developed in the ancient world. Building roadways in ancient
Italy required an extensive amount of physical strength. Creating roadways required "quarrying,
lumbering, and drainage" (Oleson). The workers initially began by placing curb stones to create the
defined border of the road (Oleson). Ditches were dug on the outside of both rows of curb stones for
storm drainage (Oleson). The land between the curb stones was then completely removed by a large
amount of digging and cutting (Oleson). The excavated ditch was then filled with stones, sand, and
other materials that were dug up from the ditches or the land around the road, forming a solid
foundation (Oleson). Laying down gravel, carrying the stones, transporting them, and carefully
placing them down required a great deal of upper and lower body strength. On top of the layer of
stones and sand was a layer of finer gravel (Oleson). The top layer of the road was made of
polygonal basalt blocks that formed a

How Did John Lennon Impact Society
Music has a unique way of impacting our lives. It often makes us wonder what inspired the artist to
say what he or she said and why they chose to put it together that way. Certain artists are capable of
leaving a lasting legacy that people pass on from generation to generation. It is easier for one to
become influenced by an artist's work if they are exposed to it at a younger age. More often than
not, people will gravitate towards a certain artist because they can find a way to connect with the
writer. The ability to decipher, process and think deeply about an artists lyrics in order to find the
meaning behind them is key to unlocking the impactfulness of the song. Although not considered a
traditional Beatles song, John Lennon is well known for his song "Imagine" and the impact it had on
society. LIFE OF LENNON Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940 to parents

grew up a poor boy in Liverpool and became one of the most well–known musicians of all time
because of his songwriting, music career, eventful family life and work with multiple charities and
organizations. Born James Paul McCartney in Liverpool, England on June 18, 1942 into a lower–
middle class family, Paul McCartney was raised by a traditional working–class family. His mother
was a maternity nurse and his father was a cotton salesman and jazz pianist. His father, Jim
McCartney, suggested Paul experiment with various instruments. At a very young age he began his
life long love affair with singing and songwriting. Although Paul was put in formal music lessons
for the most part he taught himself by ear. By using his natural musical instincts he taught himself
the Spanish guitar, the piano and trumpet ("Paul McCartney"). It became very prevalent that this

Lennon Mccartney Relationship
It was 60 years ago, John Lennon told the band to play.
The day 6th July 1957 held a strong part in the history of rock and roll music.
The Garden fete, that was held at St Peter's church, Woolton in Liverpool that year was the starting
point of the meeting of two young boys, James Paul McCartney and john Winston Lennon. It was
the first meeting of the partnership that made the legendary songwriting duo for the band the
Beatles, creating hits such as hard days night(she loves you) to let it be from the 1960s to the end of
1969, where they like to call them self as 'Lennon–McCartney' ; meet each other for the first time
formally in both their lives.

The meeting of the two boys ended with john learning how to tune his guitar, john learning how to
play chords on his guitar, john being absolutely blown away and star–struck by the talents and
charisma that Paul McCartney had attracted him.
By the end of the day, lennon was walking back home with a friend of his, refusing to take the bus
back home as a fellow bandmate asked Lennon, what did he think of 'that kid, paul'. Lennon replied
him that he liked him(Paul) and thought he was really good, the questions then turned around into
john asking whether they should ask Paul to join the band with him, but john already knew the
answer he needed before needing a reply from his bandmate.
Their meeting on 6th July 1957 was a huge change towards music history. The day McCartney met
Lennon, the day Lennon was impressed by the skills of McCartney, the day McCartney formally
knew Lennon, everything. The next few years were filled with both of them bonding and working

The band took over the entertainment media with music videos and
films, but also influenced sociocultural, political, and fashion movements throughout the sixties and
seventies. From experimenting with several different genres to incorporating classical elements into
their melodies, The Beatles still reigns as one of the most creative and successful bands several
decades later. Today, fifty years later, The Beatles and their music are still engraved in the hearts of
many. The formation of The Beatles is a long, complicated story that many do not know of. The
story of The Beatles started in 1957. John Lennon, who was sixteen at the time, formed a skiffle

The Civilization Of The Egyptians
The civilization of the Egyptians was accomplished by its surroundings. The Nile always flooded
among the spring time every year. The flood would leave tons of fertile silt. The Sahara Desert also
surrounded Egypt, but with the Nile it was a great place to live in. With it Egypt grew a lot of
manpower and acquired a surplus to trade and to devote to other matters. Nature had also created a
vast fortress wall that protected them from hostile neighbors. They all spoke a common language
and shared religious beliefs. They made a palette for the gods that was two feet and it told the
unification of Egypt. Narmer was the first one to unify Egypt and it was kept that way for 3,000
years. They had a belief that their pharaoh would be resurrected in another world and made huge
tombs for them with necessities inside with their dead body. There are nine eras of Egyptian history,
they are called: Predynastic early Dynastic, Old Kingdoms, First Intermediate Period, New
Kingdoms, Late Period, and Ptolemaic Period. One Egyptians ruler, named Khufu, created the
largest tombs and pyramids. This earned the Pyramid age nickname for the Old Kingdom, First
Intermediate Period New Kingdom, Late Period, and Ptolemaic Period. One Egyptian ruler, named

Impact On The British Invasion
The British Invasion took place during the mid–1960's. British musicians began to look toward their
American counterparts for inspiration, copying their styles and advertising to fans in the United
States. By this point, British youth had been interested in American rock and roll since the 1950's,
captivated by its pronounced beats and suggestive lyrics (Robbins). However, Britain did not have
the same musical background as the United States. In the States, rock and roll emerged from a
coalescence of Country and Western, Rhythm and Blues, and Pop music (Stuessy). Because of this,
rock from the United States had deep roots, while rock from Britain before the mid–1960's lacked
depth and was simply an imitation. Eventually, rock began to take off in Britain from two main
locations: Liverpool and London. This music became insanely popular in both Britain and the
United States (Robbins). When studying the British Invasion, it is important to analyze the musical
differences between Liverpool and London, as well as look at why this music became so popular in
the United States.
Due to Britain's obsession with rock and roll, skiffle became popular once again. Skiffle is a type of
music originating from jug bands and requires minimal instruments. Many skiffle bands used a
guitar, banjo, and rudimentary instruments such as a kazoo (Williams). The ever–popular Beatles
got their start as a skiffle band titled The Quarrymen in the town of Liverpool, England. The

of the most influential artists in and out of the music industry. His musicality is practically
unmatched, he has influenced an entirely new generation of musicians, and he protested and fought
for peace to be recognized in the world. His artistry, talent, and genuine positive outlook on life are

John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. His parents, Julia and
Alfred "Fred" Lennon, had him during a period of air raids in World War II. His mother was a pub
singer and his father was a sailor in the Navy, who disappeared for most of John's childhood. His
parents split when he was four years old, and he was sent to live with his Aunt Mimi. When he was
around five, his dad decided to try and kidnap John, and take him to New Zealand. However, Julia
showed up and let John make the choice of who to go with. According to Fred himself, John picked

Beatles took over Britain, and in 1964 they conquered domination across the globe. In February of
1964, the band made their way to the US for the first time, and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Two days after the Ed Sullivan Show, the band played their first US concert in Washington D.C.

by their music. The band he was in were called the Beatles. They were known worldwide and truly
were the most famous band at the time. John Lennon was a big part of the band. He was also known

rainbows and unicorns even though it seemed like it was. His father, who was a seaman, deserted his
wife Julia and their infant child. Over twenty years later when Alf Lennon tried to reenter his
famous son's life, Lennon did not welcome him. Unable to raise Lennon alone, Julia asked her sister
and brother–in–law, Mimi and George Smith, to care for her son. Tragically, an off–duty police
officer knocked down and killed Lennon's mother in 1958(Gale1998).

The Beatles Changed Popular Music In The 1960s
The Beatles consisted of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They
were very popular in the 1960s. They were very influential and here's why. The Beatles were a very
popular group. They were the first people to be so famous as a group, not as solo artists. In Great
Britain, they were incredibly well known. The Beatles changed popular music in other ways too.
One of the ways was by doing things themselves. Most famous people had professionals write their
music for them, but The Beatles wrote their music themselves. John and Paul wrote the songs, and
they had many different ways to do it. For example, John would write the first half of their song, and
Paul would finish it. Sometimes, they would write the whole song together. Once in awhile, just one
of them would write the whole song by themself. They changed popular music in many ways, and

Differences And Similarities Between Lennon And Cobain
INTRODUCTION "Everybody loves you when you're six feet in the ground," was once said by
John Lennon. "The finest day I ever had was when tomorrow never came," – Kurt. Though they
died in the midst of their career, John Lennon and Kurt Cobain amazed people with their successes,
obstacles, music. John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England ("John"
1). At the time, World War II was going on (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 14). His parents,
Alfred "Alf" Lennon and Julia Lennon divorced when he was a child (Burlingame, John Lennon:
Imagine 21) and he had to move in with his aunt and uncle (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 25).
In elementary school, he played guitar and harmonica, always enjoying music (Burlingame, John
Lennon: Imagine 32). The first song he ever learned was "That'll be the Day" by Buddy Holly
(Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 33). As music took over his life, John got distracted and his
aunt told him that he could not make a living by playing guitar (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine
36). When John was teenager, he started writing and composing music (Canale 1) as well as drawing
and writing books. He wrote two books, "In His Own Write" and "A Spaniard in the Works"
(Watson 2). Similarly to Lennon, another musician got their inspiration at a young age. Kurt Donald
Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington to Wendy and Don Cobain
(Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 11). He came from a musical family and was introduced to
music at an early age. When he was three years old, he wrote his first song, "Corn on the Cops."
When he started playing guitar, he held it backwards because he was left–handed, and played
popular Beatles' songs like "Hey Jude" (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 12). He was fourteen
years old when he received his first electric guitar (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 18). Like
John, Kurt was involved with the visual arts and enjoyed drawing, whittling, and painting
(Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 13). The two musicians' background allowed them to prosper
in the future. In 1956, John Lennon formed his first band, The Quarrymen, who had their first
concert in 1959 (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 38). Later, in 1960, the band

How Did John Lennon Get Guitar

  • 1. How Did John Lennon Get Guitar I believe John Lennon would have eventually learned guitar even if his half–sister Jackie had never showed him how to play banjo because John already played harmonica and was into painting and poetry. Because John experienced one loss after another during his early life, he was angry, lost, and insecure. I think Rock and Roll gave him an opportunity to release his built up aggression he held from not being raised by a father and losing his mother shortly after they started to reconnect. Since Paul McCarthy's father was a jazz pianist, I feel Paul was inspired and taught early in his childhood to play piano. I believe Paul had the best childhood and his early piano experience helped him on guitar because when he started playing guitar, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Beatles Influence On The Art World The Beatles were arguably one of the most influential bands that ever existed. The British Invasion would export a new brand of music in the form of the Beatles. The 'fab four' from Liverpool would effectively rip through America with their innovative, electric and revolutionary sound, capturing the hearts of every hysteric young girl along the way. While the Beatles and their performance of their hit song 'All My Loving' on the Ed Sullivan show in New York sent every girl into an intense frenzy, they also effected the creative minds of todays culture. There was a sense of creative freedom amongst artists who could treat pop music as an art form rather than conform to what everyone else did previously. 'Beatlemainia' shaped a path of creative freedom for many bands in an already rigid pop culture. The Beatles were instrumental in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This essay will discuss how the Beatles 'were the first pop musicians to challenge the clear distinction between high and low cultural spaces, to treat pop music as an art world'. The Beatles were a remarkable band; a band that had a positive contribution on society during a time when rock n' roll was judged to be dangerous and even outdated. The Beatles' background had a significant role to play in how the band was influential in later years. In 1956, John Lennon, a local juvenile delinquent at the time, formed a local skiffle band with several school friends called 'The Quarrymen', suitably named after the school they attended, The Quarry Bank High School. The band played at various parties and skiffle contests before Paul McCartney joined the band in 1957 after impressing Lennon at a local church concert. The following year George Harrison joined the band under the recommendation of McCartney. However, at the beginning Lennon was reluctant to allow the 14–year–old Harrison to join the group due to his young age. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Musical Influences On The Beatles : The Beatles Cynthia Leon Music 12 Dr. Michael Zilber The Beatles The Beatles are an English rock band that became one of the most iconic bands in history. All four of the band members of the Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ring Starr were born in Liverpool in the early 1940's. During this time England was in the midst of WWII and they were deemed as "war babies". The shambles that England was left in cultivated skiffle from the U.S. which was a form of music that made it fairly easy for nearly anyone to create a band from very simple instruments like jugs and guitars. This resulted in the boys joining in this new Liverpool craze. The simple manner of skiffle attributed to George Harrison starting up his career after he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The song, "Heartbreak Hotel", by Elvis opened the door to rock and roll for John Lennon. Elvis Presley's success in rock and roll had set the model for the Beatles. The Beatles goal had become to get even bigger than Elvis pushed them to do so in several ways. Secondly, both American rock and roll and one of rock and roll's pioneers, Chuck Berry made a huge impact on the Beatles early on in their careers. Considering much of the popular music at the time came from America this was not all uncommon. The Beatles covered several of his songs like "Roll over Beethoven" and "Rock and Roll music". You can hear his influence even in later songs such as, "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", and, "Come Together" (1969). Berry's evidentially heavy influence in, "Come Together", would later become an implication and John Lennon was sued for using parts of, "You Can't Catch Me" which Berry released in 1956. In addition to covers, early as when they were known as the Quarrymen, the Beatles had been playing Berry's songs in their shows and throughout their career as a band, they performed no less than 15 of his songs. Eventually, Chuck Berry would go on to inviting a very talented musician, Carl Perkins to tour with him in 1964 in Britain. The impact of Carl Perkins not only reached the Beatles but also Elvis Presley. After listening to Perkins' 1955 hit, "Blue Suede Shoes", the Beatles had been affected by his ... George was only sixteen when he joined the band, which was, at that time, The Quarrymen. He was allowed to join because John was very impressed that he could play "Raunchy," a popular song at the time, note for note (Lewisohn, 3). As soon as George joined, he, Paul, and John dropped out of school (Schaffner, 19). This band had three guitarists, singers, and songwriters, but no bass or drums. After trying many people, they finally settled on Pete Best on drums. They recruited Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, and although he was a talented artist that John had met at school, he could hardly play his instrument (Wiener, 4). The new band had no name, and their early inspirations were Buddy Holly, and the Crickets. John created the name "Beatles," because "'I [John] was looking for a name like the Crickets that means two things. From Crickets I went to Beatles... when you said it people thought of crawly things, when you read it it was beat music.'" (Schaffner, 20). So the Beatles were born. They began to play at a club called The Cavern in Liverpool, after a destructive tour in Hamburg, Germany. Soon after this, Stuart became engaged and left the band. • 21. Beatlemania: The Rise to International Fame Believe it or not, on January 1st of 1962, the group known as The Beatles flunked their audition at Decca Records in London, England. The label's executive, Dick Rowe, brushed them off like they were nothing. He simply stated that "guitar groups are on the way out." Little did Rowe know, The Beatles would soon conquer modern society and alter the course of pop and rock music. There have been no other entertainers in the history of music that has been so popular, influential, or as groundbreaking as The Beatles. In the early 1960's, their popularity was often called "Beatlemania," as thousands of screaming fans would crowd their concerts and sing–along with the Fab Four. They sold over 600 million albums internationally and had 20 Number One hit singles – a Billboard record that has yet to be broken. The band took over the entertainment media with music videos and films, but also influenced sociocultural, political, and fashion movements throughout the sixties and seventies. From experimenting with several different genres to incorporating classical elements into their melodies, The Beatles still reign as one of the most creative and successful bands several decades later. • 33. The Egyptian Pyramids Essay The Egyptian Pyramids When most people think of Ancient Egypt they think of Pyramids. To construct such great monuments required a mastery of architecture, social organization, and art that few cultures of that period could achieve. The oldest pyramid, the Step–Pyramids, grow out of the abilities of two men, King Djoser and Imhotep. Djoser, the second king of 3rd dynasty, was the first king to have hired an architect, Imhotep, to design a tomb (Time–Life Books, 74). Imhotep was known as the father of mathematics, medicine, architecture, and as the inventor of the calendar (White, 40). He had a great idea of stacking mastabas until they reached six tiers, a total of 60 meters high and its base 180 meters by 108 meters (Casson, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just to move one block took the work of forty men. The daily life of the workers constructing the pyramids was one of immense toil spanning over a long period of time. The quarrymen toiled away with soft copper chisels that hardly made a dent in the limestone. Another team dug a network of canals to transport the stones and food for the workers. Finally, another team of workers would haul the massive blocks on wooden sleds and put them into position (Casson, 130–137). This great social organization became the force that knit the country together. Another important group was the artisans. They were the people who decorated the inside of the pyramids. The artisans, also, brought a sense of social organization by the many processes it took to produce a work of art. For instance, the actual sculpting of a statue was not considered a single process, but as on process among many. The quarrymen had to quarry the stone with soft copper chisels, and it was transported to a sculptor. After the sculptor was finished with it, the sculpture was sent to another artisan. This artist would cut hieroglyphs in the statue. The hieroglyphs were about the life of the person that the statue represented. • 41. Music In Music, Music And The Music Industry Music is an art, an expression, an industry, and most importantly a business. Davis Szatmary, author of "Rockin' in Time," states, "[r]ock–and–roll has always been a business" (2014, p. xvi). Music connects to my business major through its relations of marketing, management, and supply chain, or distribution. Without these key components bands, labels, and technology may have never grown to the heights its reached today. The biggest contender in music development, outside of its sound, is the way the labels and managers chose to market their music and the artist. The best example of this change is seen in the (now known as) Beatles. Starting out the Beatles were otherwise known as Johnny and the Moondogs or The Quarrymen. Not only did their name change but so did their sound and their style. The Quarrymen had a rockabilly sound and traveled to local bars to play. Later, as the Beatles they had a more R&B style and a greaser look, which was again changed by their manager Brian Epstein. Their new image was mods, a popular prep style in the United Kingdom. (Gordon, 2017, "The British Invasion") This served them well and their fan base grew quickly. The Beatles continue to change throughout their career, marketing themselves to match the times and the new trends. Szatmary explains, "Though a business, rock music has engendered and has been defined by rebellion, which manifested itself through a series of overlapping subcultures. The Beatles Impact On Rock And Roll Impact The impact of The Beatles on the Rock and Roll Around 1960 in Liverpool, England four young man, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr decided to form a rock band, and they name it The Beatles. However, it all started in the late 1950s when John Lennon formed his first band called The Black Jacks. The band was made up of classmates from the Quarry Bank Grammar School in Liverpool, and after they started, then they changed their name to The Quarrymen, to represent their school. They often played a kind of music called skiffle, which was a mixture of folk, jazz, and blues which was popular in England at the time. In the summer of 1957 a member of the band introduced Lennon to Paul McCartney, and Paul who was very passionate about music auditioned for the band, after he was invited to join the band in late October, 1957. In the next year 1958, Lennon decided to make some change because he wanted the band to be a more like a Rock and Roll Band. Some member of the band left because they did not like Lennon's idea to the band style. The Quarrymen separated in 1959, but they reunited when McCartney introduce Lennon to his old friend Harrison. Harrison at that time had another band, but it did felt apart too. Later they met with Pete Best whose mother owned a Coffee Club. • 49. The Explosion Of Rock N ' Roll Era The explosion of Rock n' Roll in the mid–1950's helped bring to the forefront of American society the idea that social, cultural, and musical change was deeply needed. By 1959, the initial success and jolt of the Rock n' Roll era, that took the American youth by storm three years earlier, had officially fallen apart at the seams. The late 1950's and early 1960's marked a period of decline for the Rock and Roll genre. The parting of Elvis Presley for the military in 1958, the death of Buddy Holly and two other members of The Crickets in 1959, and the departure of the other members of Rock and Roll's "Big Five" throughout much of the late 1950's had devastated America's hope for social and musical change (Ashton Lecture). With this breakdown of Rock n' Roll, came an era that was once again dominated and mesmerized by the Jazz, Pop and Country Western genres. The Rock and Roll flame that captivated so many American citizens throughout much of the 1950's was slowly beginning to dwindle back into the darkness. As all hope seemed to be lost, a new dawn for Rock and Roll was gradually appearing. In 1963–1964 with the introduction of a small British band from Liverpool, England, the dawn that everyone was waiting for had finally arrived and with it would change Rock n' Roll history forever. The Beatles, for many people, was one of the greatest Rock n' Roll bands to ever live. Throughout their illustrious career, The Beatles were able not only to revolutionize and influence the ... While the grading of music can be considered subjective, one band, titled the Beatles, obviously did something right. With their wide range of beats, and spellbinding lyrics, the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon. The framework that transitioned the Beatles into a small town band to a music icon/symbol can be analyzed by observing a wide range of conditions. These conditions can be located by diving into the parts that made up the Beatles. Let's start off with John Lennon who at a young age was interested in a music genre called skiffle and later began forming a band called the Quarrymen in 1955 one of the influences for his name came from his school called Quarry Bank High School. [3] A year after the start of the Quarrymen, Lennon met Paul McCartney and the two began working together composing songs, starting groups before the Beatles, and meeting the other members. Before meeting Lennon, Paul McCartney inherited his interest in music from his father. He learned to play the piano and the trumpet from his father. Not only this, but McCartney was influenced by American rock and roll in the 1950's. McCartney attended Liverpool Institute and became acquainted with George Harrison. The most known version of this piece was recorded and performed by huddle William Ledbetter more commonly known as Lead Belly to keep their stories alive and to relate to his own experiences of picking cotton. The lyric plays a major role in conveying the message in the song. its original lyrics were criticized as being racist and reminiscent of the slave period in American history but the lyrics were amended. The lyrics "Jump down, turn around to pick a bale of cotton /pick a bale a day" which repeated numerous times in the songs shows how repetitive the process of picking cotton is.it also mentions picking a bale in a day which is an unthinkable job to do. Lead belly took a song of hopelessness and turned it into a song of determination, of proving the impossible possible. • 69. The Importance Of Human Physical Strength In The Ancient... Humans in the ancient world definitely took advantage of their physical strength. Five great examples of this are: building roads, quarrying, operating cranes, digging wells, and constructing tunnels. All of these tasks could only be completed with an immense amount of endurance and strength. Anything from laying rocks to digging out an entire tunnel was a difficult and grueling task. In many cases, a great deal of human physical strength was required to fully exploit the technologies and technical practices developed in the ancient world. Building roadways in ancient Italy required an extensive amount of physical strength. Creating roadways required "quarrying, lumbering, and drainage" (Oleson). The workers initially began by placing curb stones to create the defined border of the road (Oleson). Ditches were dug on the outside of both rows of curb stones for storm drainage (Oleson). The land between the curb stones was then completely removed by a large amount of digging and cutting (Oleson). The excavated ditch was then filled with stones, sand, and other materials that were dug up from the ditches or the land around the road, forming a solid foundation (Oleson). Laying down gravel, carrying the stones, transporting them, and carefully placing them down required a great deal of upper and lower body strength. On top of the layer of stones and sand was a layer of finer gravel (Oleson). The top layer of the road was made of polygonal basalt blocks that formed a Chambers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 97. Impact On The British Invasion The British Invasion took place during the mid–1960's. British musicians began to look toward their American counterparts for inspiration, copying their styles and advertising to fans in the United States. By this point, British youth had been interested in American rock and roll since the 1950's, captivated by its pronounced beats and suggestive lyrics (Robbins). However, Britain did not have the same musical background as the United States. In the States, rock and roll emerged from a coalescence of Country and Western, Rhythm and Blues, and Pop music (Stuessy). Because of this, rock from the United States had deep roots, while rock from Britain before the mid–1960's lacked depth and was simply an imitation. Eventually, rock began to take off in Britain from two main locations: Liverpool and London. This music became insanely popular in both Britain and the United States (Robbins). When studying the British Invasion, it is important to analyze the musical differences between Liverpool and London, as well as look at why this music became so popular in the United States. Due to Britain's obsession with rock and roll, skiffle became popular once again. Skiffle is a type of music originating from jug bands and requires minimal instruments. Many skiffle bands used a guitar, banjo, and rudimentary instruments such as a kazoo (Williams). • 153. Differences And Similarities Between Lennon And Cobain INTRODUCTION "Everybody loves you when you're six feet in the ground," was once said by John Lennon. "The finest day I ever had was when tomorrow never came," – Kurt. Though they died in the midst of their career, John Lennon and Kurt Cobain amazed people with their successes, obstacles, music. John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England ("John" 1). At the time, World War II was going on (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 14). His parents, Alfred "Alf" Lennon and Julia Lennon divorced when he was a child (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 21) and he had to move in with his aunt and uncle (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 25). In elementary school, he played guitar and harmonica, always enjoying music (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 32). The first song he ever learned was "That'll be the Day" by Buddy Holly (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 33). As music took over his life, John got distracted and his aunt told him that he could not make a living by playing guitar (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 36). When John was teenager, he started writing and composing music (Canale 1) as well as drawing and writing books. He wrote two books, "In His Own Write" and "A Spaniard in the Works" (Watson 2). Similarly to Lennon, another musician got their inspiration at a young age. Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington to Wendy and Don Cobain (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 11). He came from a musical family and was introduced to music at an early age. When he was three years old, he wrote his first song, "Corn on the Cops." When he started playing guitar, he held it backwards because he was left–handed, and played popular Beatles' songs like "Hey Jude" (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 12). He was fourteen years old when he received his first electric guitar (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 18). Like John, Kurt was involved with the visual arts and enjoyed drawing, whittling, and painting (Burlingame, Kurt Cobain: Oh Well... 13). The two musicians' background allowed them to prosper in the future. In 1956, John Lennon formed his first band, The Quarrymen, who had their first concert in 1959 (Burlingame, John Lennon: Imagine 38). Later, in 1960, the band ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
