The Tragedy Of Siddhartha 's Life
Siddhartha's protected environment could no longer satisfy him when he discovered the unfortunate
truths of every person 's life. Occasionally, the prince would leave the palace to take trips into the
city. His father, wanting to shelter him, would orchestrate these trips to avoid the unpleasantries of
life. The story goes that four sights led Siddartha to leave his established life. He experienced these
sights on outings he was taken on by his charioteer named Chandaka. Even though care was taken to
hide these things the prince saw old age, disease, and death that drastically changed his view of the
world. On a fourth outing, he saw a holy man and a practicing ascetic. This is when he first
perceived these realities of human life. He suddenly became aware of the causes of suffering in the
world. This encounter showed him, what he thought was the way to overcome life 's sufferings, the
ascetic path. At the age of twenty–nine he left his wife, his son, and his palace behind to lead a life
of extreme asceticism that he believed could lead him to the answer of overcoming human suffering.
For six years Siddhartha Gautama followed asceticism and meditation. He practiced the yoga
discipline under two masters, Arada Kalama, and Udraka Ramaputra. Not finding the answers under
his two teachers he left to engage in extreme asceticism and was joined by five others; Ashvajit,

On a more personal note, what I find to be sacred is music. I decided to choose music after reading
the epic, Gassire's Lute. The epic is about a prince, Gassire who is anxiously waiting for his father to
die so he can be the next king. Gassire visits a wise man that tells Gassire that he "will never carry
his [Nganamba] sword and shield," rather, he "will carry a lute" (Jablow 20). Of course, Gassire is

throughout Asia. Buddhism is rooted in the three elements known as the "Three Jewels": the
Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Through these elements, followers practice meditation and
self–control in order to reach the state of enlightenment, or nirvana. The religion was pioneered by

Introduction
I have chosen Hinduism and Buddhism as the two religions for this assignment. With religion being
such an intricate part of many cultures, I found these religions most interesting due to their
similarity. Both of these religions originated in the subcontinent of India, these religions have had an
awkward relationship that can be compared to Christianity and Judaism. The belief is that Buddhism
is an off shoot of the Hindu religion. My goal is to address the questions in this assignment and to
take a look at how close these two religions truly are and what role do these religions play in the
lives of those who practice them.
Hinduism and Buddhism affect one another from numerous points of view. The Buddhist idea of
preservation and love toward every single living thing found it's begins in India, while Mahayana
Buddhism took its customs from Indian practices for reverential love. Buddhism also had a hand in
influencing the development of the art and architecture of the Hindu religion and also contributed to
the art of mediation and higher conditions of awareness. Yet the Hindu tantra impacted the inception
and advancement of Vajrayana Buddhism.

the brain on being completely mindful of our considerations and activities, and creating shrewdness
by understanding the Four Noble Truths and by creating empathy for others(9). There are various

during his meditations under the Bodhi tree. In honor of its founder, meditation holds a vital role in
Buddhism for indicating an individual's ability to attain truth. It is through the process of meditation,
that Buddhists can attempt to attain enlightenment in the same matter as the Buddha during the myth
of Bodhi– the story of Buddha's enlightenment.
In order to understand the significance of Buddhist meditation, it is necessary to first understand the
mythology behind it: the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama. About 2500 years ago, between the
fourth and sixth centuries BCE, Siddhartha Gautama was born crown prince, son of Suddhodana,
King of the Sakyas. He was born in Lumbini Garden, in modern day Nepal. Being born as a prince,
Gautama was guaranteed social and material comfort. It was said that during his life in the palace,
Gautama was aware of the pain and suffering which afflicted human life, a quality which was
intensified due to the early loss of his mother, Queen Maya. As a youth, Gautama meditated in an
effort to detach himself from desire and find enlightenment, preferring to do so under the shade of a
tree, foreshadowing his apotheosis into Sakayumi Buddha. It was during these periods of meditation

In 624 BC, a future Buddha and founder of Buddhism, who would eventually be named by his

King Shuddhodana and Queen Mahamaya had many predictions of their son extraordinary life; it as

Gautama also known as Buddha "the awakened one", the founder and leader of the Buddhism, lived
from the periods of 566 BC to 480 BC (Buswell). Siddhartha Gautama was an Indian warrior king's
son so he lived a lavish life as he was the prince of the warrior caste. He got bored of his extravagant
life as he lived on and went into the world to search and explore it for understanding. He wondered
what happened outside of the palace and he finally got permission to explore the life of others
outside the palace. His father, Shuddodana Gautama, believed that his son should not see the life of
the poor and suffers of the people because he didn't want Siddhartha to lead a religious life,

still faced the truth as he chased some old men who accidently went into the parade that he saw. He
came across sick people, an ascetic, and a monk as he was greatly surprised to see such people

'Aryan' is a linguistic term for 'Indo–European' (Robert & Westad 2014a). The Aryans brought to
India no culture so advanced as that of Harappans (Robert & Westad 2014a). When the Aryans
appear writing disappeared and does not come back until the middle of the first millennium BCE.
Cities were reinvented by the Aryans, which lack the elaboration and order of the gridded pattern of
Harappans (Robert & Westad 2014a). When the Aryans migrated into the Indus Valley they brought
with them a culture that was very different from any other region (Breyer 2004). The invaders had
two contributions to Indian history; it's formal history and its social institutions (Robert & Westad
2014a). One of the biggest social institutions that the Aryans brought to India was the unique social
structure; in their system every class had a duty to their society (Breyer 2004). Originally there were
only three main classes or Varnas, but this changed to fit the civilisation in which they controlled
(Breyer 2004). As religion and rituals were a major part of Indian life, it was only fitting that the

There are many religions and many differences. Everybody has different beliefs and today I'm here

Before we are going further on Buddhism's view on salvation it's very important to define the word
Buddhism. In his book Modern Buddhism Geshe gives a definition of Buddhism. he said:
"Buddhism is the practice of Buddha's teachings, also called 'Dharma', which means 'protection'. By
practicing Buddha's teachings, living beings are permanently protected from suffering. The founder
of Buddhism is Buddha Shakyamuni, who showed the manner of accomplishing the ultimate goal of
living beings, the attainment of enlightenment, at Bodh Gaya in India in 589 BC. At the request of
the gods Indra and Brahma, Buddha then began to expound his profound teachings, or 'turned the
