The techniques seen during this period are very important. One being in order to depict the human figure
properly, artists needed to study the anatomy. With the studying of the human body, artists used the technique
of shading to create the volume and a better sense of perspective. During the restoration of St. Catherine of
Alexandria, many parts were left untouched while others were carefully re–painted (Brink, 2001, para. 7); in
my opinion, this says a lot about the quality of work Martini presented. In other words, this painting is
significant because of the stylistic breakthrough of its time, as well as the care and quality of the painting
itselfas well as the materials used. The titling of this period "re–birth" or "Renaissance" hints this time
involved a breakthrough in art history. Through the use of geometry and perspective, chiaroscuro,
contraposto, naturalism, classical themes, and the materials used, I was able to determine the stylistic period
that Simone Martini, St. Catherine of Alexandria, was created during the renaissance period. Further research
helped me determine that this painting was in fact a creation of the Early Italian Renaissance period. Without
the use of these techniques and materials, the significance of this time in art

Basic anatomy describes two classes of tissues that make up our bodies: epithelial tissues, a thin tissue
forming the outside lining of the body's surface, and connective tissues, tissues that support, bind, and
separate other tissues or organs deep to the epithelium. Believe it or not, your digestive tract is lined with
epithelial cells, supporting the notion that we are theoretically hollow and open to the outside world, almost
like a donut. Epithelial cells, while simplistic in nature, carry out various complex functions, but of the most
important is their ability to secrete mucous and absorb nutrients. In the stomach, these functions are vital in
not only the secretion of HCl, but also protecting us from the HCl itself. Lining the stomach is an epithelial
mucosa layer known as the secretory sheet, which "produces a carpet of mucus that covers the interior
surface of the stomach. This alkaline mucous layer protects epithelial cells against the acid and enzymes in

breakdown of nutrients live in gastric pits of the rugae, they are parietal and chief cells. Chief cells promote

When looking at Skyy's vodka advertisement, they had encoded many types of meanings in their
advertisement to appeal customers into buying their products. You first see a woman dressed up all in black
holding a martini shaker while a man is sitting in a round chair holding a martini glass. You can only see the
man's hand and legs which creates a mysterious look with the combination of the setting being night time.
The second thing you would see is the actual product in the corner of the ad because of the contrast of the

The integumentary system establishes a barrier between the inside of the human body and the outside world.
The purpose of this system is to provide protection from the external environment, sensation in terms of
pressure, pain, and temperature, production of vitamin D after exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun,
temperature regulation so as to not overheat the body, and excretion through means of sweating (Martini,
Nath, & Bartholomew, 2011). The skin is able to provide the body with all of the aforementioned features
because of its composition. The skin itself is made up of two layers: the epidermis and the dermis.
The outermost layer of the skin is the epidermis and is made up of stratified squamous epithelium. The
epidermis does not contain any blood vessels and is vastly made up of keratinocytes. These cells secrete a
protein called keratin which contributes to the tough feeling of skin and its water resistance. The epidermis
also contains melanocytes that are responsible for skin pigmentation and Langerhans cells that work as a part
of the immune system to provide an immediate defense if a foreign substance were to come in contact with
the skin. There are also Merkel cells in the epidermis that are responsible for sensations such as light touch
and slight pressure (Patton & Thibodeau, 2009). Aside from these features, the epidermis is also made up of
five distinct layers called strata.

feedback is a mechanism that increases a deviation from normal limits after an initial stimulus. Homeostasis
