Finding the Greatest Amount of Product with a Spectrophotometer
Introduction For the enzyme experiment, I hypothesized that test tube number one would have the
greatest amount of product. My lab partners and I believed that number one would have the most
significant amount of product because it had the highest mL amount of the potato extract. The potato
extract is the enzyme of the investigation being used which is catecholase (Picture 4). The substrate
in the investigation is catechol (Picture 6), and the reddish–brown product is called benzoquinone
(Figure 2). Enzymes are proteins that help the speeding up of chemical reactions. Enzymes will
never destroy unless pH, salt, and temperature negatively affect it. When the enzyme is finished
with one substrate, it moves on to another one directly after. According to the lab manual by Pearson
(2011), substrates are the reactant molecules that are being changed by the enzyme. It is known that
when the substance is an enzyme, it ends in letters "ase." Substrates and enzymes have a lock and
key relationship with one another. The key in the relationship is the substrate, and the lock in the
relationship is the enzyme (Cap, 2016). An example of an enzyme and substrate relationship is
sucrase and sucrose. The enzyme sucrase positions the sucrose, which is table salt, in a way that it

Lab Safety Code At Biosafety Labs
Chemistry laboratories pose a threat to the consumer; however, they also affect the researcher. A
young Singaporean researcher contracted Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) through an
experiment that had gone wrong. At first many people thought he was sickened with this disease
because there was a SARS crisis all around Asia; however, that was not the case. In the article,
SARS Experts want Labs to Improve Safety Practices, the researcher claimed that he "didn't have
the background to understand how to handle dangerous agents." Due to the chemistry lab, the
researcher was injured. This then formulated an international problem in which the national
legislation instructed a very detailed safety code at biosafety labs. Many amateur experimenters do
not know lab safety by heart so they tend to perform dangerous actions that may lead to injuries or
death depending on how potentially dangerous the experiment is. In my personal experiences, I have
seen many improper lab practices in which I helped teach people how to correctly perform these
actions. This includes adding acids to water and not the reverse way because acids may bubble and
splash everywhere, pouring liquids from small containers to big containers unless a valve is
available is favored because it is easier to spill the content from a big container into the small
container, and to wear close–toed shoes in order to prevent falling dangerous materials from making

During the month of November, I became our school's acting testing coordinator. Our testing
coordinator was in an accident and went out on medical leave. She was suddenly out for an
undetermined amount of time and with a severe concussion was unable to remember what she
completed and what she did not. During her absence, there were two assessments and a survey that
needed to me completed. These assessments included SAT 10, FFT (Teacher Survey) and MAP–R.
This was a very demanding experience. The first thing that needed to be completed was the FFT
Teacher Survey. This is important to all teachers on–cycle using the Framework for Teaching. The
Survey is a vital component to a teachers overall effectiveness. If left incomplete, the teacher
receives a score of zero for that portion. When I became the acting testing coordinator, only two
weeks were left in the window and no surveys were completed. Within two weeks, I needed to
complete 167 surveys for 7 teachers. Unfortunately, the teachers could not assist in this endeavor. I
tried to create a schedule were I was able to conduct all 167 surveys. This was impossible if I was
still going to meet with my intervention students. Therefore, I rounded up a team of individuals that

The Digital Student
In order to understand the ways in which I plan to use the new ideas and strategies I have gained in
the "Digital Student" course, you must first understand my teaching placements. Each school day I
teach in two vastly different settings. In the morning I teach at an urban high school. We have
roughly twelve hundred and fifty students. At my high school, we face all of the challenges you find
in an urban setting. Sixty–one percent of our students are economically challenged. Many of my
students work in the evening to help out at home or to have spending money. Attendance is a

sections and have a total of sixty–four students in my classes. My course fulfills the third year of the
science graduation requirement for many of my students. Accessing technology in my school can be
challenging. We do not have one to one computer access for our students. We have one computer
lab, one library computer lab and Chromecarts. The Chromecarts are frequently out of circulation

Type of Reactions We did a lab on many reactions to find the products of the reactions. We
conducted four group experiments and three class experiments, following very strict safety
procedures given to us by our instructor. We used goggles and aprons which were required at all

Purpose
The ultimate purpose of this experiment is to go through the copper cycle through various steps that
include dissolution, precipitation, conversion, and reduction of copper. Throughout the processes the
qualitative observations were recorded to see what effect each type of acid and decanting has on
copper. All of these steps were successfully completed by using different acidic solutions and zinc to

Christopher Carroll, the author, using his research quickly points out that is not the case. Rather, the
main agenda of the lab is to produce viruses and other microbes that could decimate populations of
livestock of the United State's enemies in times of war while also developing vaccines to prevent
other nations from doing the same to it. This concept is horrifying and sounds like something one

In our lab we were working with isopods, also known as pill bugs or rollie pollies. The isopods that
we worked with were land isopods. They like to live in moist places under untouched objects such
as boards, bricks, rotting logs and or rocks. Basically, they will live anywhere! If you are lucky
enough, you can even find them next to buildings where it is moist and if there is food. All living
organisms like certain things and don't like certain things, for example; most animals will try to eat

At the beginning of our lab we had placed the pill bugs in the petri dish with dry filter paper and we
observed their behavior. The pill bugs were going around the inside rim of petri in circles following
each other, almost as if it were a game of tag. The pill bugs never seemed to stop moving, flipping
over and were constantly climbing. Some of the pill bugs even tried to escape from the petri dish,

Safety Goggles Lab
When observing, assisting, or leading a high school or undergraduate chemistry lab, the statement
that is frequently said and heard is the reminder to put on safety goggles. Often times students will
forget about wearing their goggles or they will place their goggles on their foreheads, instead of
covering their eyes. The have been personal experiences where students will argue with the
instructor about not wearing their goggles during an experiment. The distaste of the safety goggles
typically comes from the comfortability of the goggles (1), and students will remove their goggles as
soon as possible. Once an instructor notices the improper placement of the goggles, the whole lab

Sharpless was an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the year
1970. Dr. Sharpless noted that he always wore eye protection in the lab, except for this one
occasion. He was checking on a new student in the graduate program while the student was sealing a
NMR tube. Two major mistakes occurred while aiding the new student. The first mistake was not
looking up how to properly seal the NMR tube, and the second was Dr. Sharpless not wearing his
goggles. While taking the tube out of liquid nitrogen, the solvent inside the tube exploded causing
shards of glass to enter one of Dr. Sharpless's eyes. This lab accident cause Dr. Sharpless to lose his
vision completely in the eye that was impacted by the glass shards. Dr. Sharpless ends his story with
a message for the students who complain about wearing their goggles. This message is "the lesson to
be learned from my experience is straightforward: there's simply never an adequate excuse for not
wearing safety glasses in the laboratory at all times"

The perfect example of this situation is when we had to change labs for our advanced lab testing
portion related to the Partner for Health program. Originally we used HDL labatory however due to
some recent bad press we no longer felt this lab was a reliable option. We had to re–assure both the
patients and the client that they would recieve the same quality of testing that they were use to with
previous lab draws. As part of choosing a labatory, I reseached labs that offered similar advanced lab
testing. I then sent the top three labs a proposal along with a list of questions. The questions were

Once a lab was chosen, I met with their key players to discuss our expectations and further
explained the lab comparison that needed to be captured. I also met with their lipid specialists to
ensure that their test panel would closely mirror the test previously performed by HDL. For those
test that appeared differently, I had the specialists put together explainations to supply to our staff,
clients, and patients. To test the overall response to the change in the lab, I had the first labs drawn at
a board retreat where only 20 members were impacted instead of the 1200 enrollees. This allowed
me to gather facts on a smaller spectrum and to make corrections before we have all of the
participants present for the lab draws. Some of the information received from this test group was not
positive but it was easily corrected. The things that needed to be addressed were based on
