21. Finally, all of his questions were answered in a way he’d least expected.
Moving purposefully to the bow of La Luna, his father leaned over a wooden trunk, its
gnarled wood betraying the years endured in the ocean air. The satisfying clunk of the
iron lock was followed by the moan of the old hinges as his father slowed raised the lid.
From within the battered chest, his father's muscular arms began to haul out a wooden
ladder. Astonished, the boy watched disbelievingly as the ladder was extended further
... and yet further still. Peering upwards, the boy watched the wooden rungs seem to
reach towards the stars themselves.
"This is your day; this is your moment," said his father, turning slowly. "Up you go!"
Steadying himself to conceal his fear, the boy wrapped the thick anchor rope around his
body and stepped towards the ladder, placing his hand on the highest rung that was
within reach.
22. "Go on!" encouraged his grandfather.
Step by step, rung by rung, he tentatively began to climb towards the heavens.
Inching upwards, clutching each rung tightly, he felt suddenly alone. Looking down
towards La Luna floating motionless and bathed in the warm light of the moon, he
stopped climbing. It was such a long way down and he could go no further.
"Go on," his grandfather croaked. "I was like you once. You can do it!"
Reassured by his grandfather's caring words, the boy turned and hesitantly began to
continue his climb.
Edging higher and higher he ascended until La Luna was but a distant shape below.
Reaching the final rung, he felt a magical lightness take hold. His feet began to gently
float off the ladder as gravity's grasp weakened.
