2. Here are some great examples
of work sent to us describing
the scene when he is given the
anchor. Have a read through,
you may see words and
phrases that inspire you. Jot
them down if you do!
3. As the salty air wisped around his ears, he was kindly handed a tarnished, old anchor by his
loving father. Grasped in his hands, it gave him a spark of pride and belief.
‘‘Take this dear son, you deserve it,’’ his silhouetted father murmured as tears trickled down
his wind-swept face.
The boy was baffled by the idea of why he should take hold of this metal object, yet he
trusted his instinct. Wandering to the splintered side of the boat, his hands reached out
over the glistening ocean, his eyes tightly closed.
‘‘Wait a moment dear boy, watch your father,’’ his grandfather explained supportively.
He hesitated.
Even more perplexed as the last, he was unsure of what he was expected to do in this
peculiar event. Tilting side to side, would never lose his balance whilst the anchor was in
his grasp.
4. The silver glow of the moon draped a blanket of light over the three of them and the
peaceful waters lapped gently against the boat. He turned his head away to see his father
holding a damp and dirty rusting anchor. “Here, take this!” beamed his father with a sense
of pride about him. “You’re one of us now!”
The boy carefully reached out his hand and took it from his father. His father smiled. The
boy looked back down at the anchor and studied it. It looked ordinary to him. What was he
supposed to do now? His granddad and father were both looking at him expectantly.
Cautiously, he decided to do what any ordinary person would do and lifted his arms, ready
to throw it overboard. Just before he let go his granddad interrupted him with sense of
urgency.
“No that’s not what we do!” he said kindly but firmly. The boy, now even more befuddled,
looked at him in confusion.
He thought to himself, “What am I supposed to do with it then?” Luckily for him he was
about to find out, and it was not what he was expecting…
5. He reluctantly drew his attention away from the rising gleaming moon and
focussed it onto his burly father who was searching around inside a wooden
crate for something. A few seconds later he emerged with an old rusty anchor
and murmured “Here you go son, you’re gonna need this!” Confused and
obediently, the boy took it whispering a faint word of thanks. He held onto it
for a few seconds wondering what to do with it, then, he remembered it was
an anchor so he should throw it over the edge of the boat so he wandered over
to the edge and was about to throw it over but his grandfather stopped him.
The boy looked even more confused. His grandfather wagged a stern finger in
his face but there was a twinkle in his eye he held his hand out to where his
father was. The boy turned to where he was looking and gasped as he saw
what was in front of him.

your final piece of writing today.
