■ Goals:
– Optimize your reading time to obtain a general overview of the text
■ Look for:
– Thesis
– Main points
– Conclusion
– Summary

■ Examples:
– Assignment: Read the following article and summarize the main idea of the
reading.
– Reading a 10-page research paper on microbial marine life.
8. Strategy 2: Scanning
■ Goals:
– Optimize your reading time to obtain specific facts within the text
■ Look for:
– Names
– Dates
– Statistics
– Unique terminology / vocab

■ Examples:
– According to the packet, in which year did the War of 1812 end?
– Purchasing food for a family member allergic to peanuts.

■ Goals:
– Active reading
– Increase comprehension, retention, and
connection

■ Survey
– Understand what the text is about
■ Read the title
■ Read the introductions / summary
– What are the authors main points?
■ Look for headings and subheadings
■ Reading aids: italics, bold print, summaries, end of chapter reviews / questions
■ Know what information is the most important!

– Use the section headers to formulate questions
■ As many as you can think of
■ From broad to specific
■ Get your brain looking for answers
– Keep asking questions as you continue this strategy

– One section at a time
■ Keep asking the section-specific questions
– Notice when new questions arise

■ Recite
– At the end of each section, repeat your questions
■ Attempt to answer them from memory
■ Refer to the text as often as necessary
– Move to the next section only when you can answer all of your questions

– Once finished reading the entire chapter, article, or text, review
■ Review your questions for each section header
– Refer to the text when necessary
– Proceed to the next section when you can answer all of your questions
■ Repeat!
