Reading Strategies – plans for solving problems
encountered in constructing meaning
Why learn reading strategies?
1)Improve reading comprehension as well as
efficiency in reading
2)Read in the way that expert readers do
3)Process the text actively, to monitor
comprehension, and to connect what they are
reading to their own knowledge and to other parts of
the text
4. Reading Strategy #1
PREDICT
Check:
-titles/pictures
-headlines/subtitles, look for key words and
guess what the text will be about
-when the author asks a question
-when the character in a story is about to do
something
textbook e.g. – Statistics, state of nation……
what kind of statistics? what do you expect to
read?
5. Reading Strategy # 2
CLARIFY
- If you don’t understand something, reread, look for
clues
-Find the meaning of words by:
1)Look for little words in big words
2)Look for roots/bases/prefixes/suffixes
3)Look for commas that follow unfamiliar words.
Sometimes the author may use the word "or".
4)Keep reading.
textbook e.g. – Aged 16 and over… does that include 16
year olds?
7. Reading Strategy # 4
ASK QUESTIONS
-Interact with the material
WHY?
1)To test yourself for comprehension.
2)To identify what is important to remember in the
story or the passage.
3)To further your understanding
textbook e.g. – How many British people are
common law?
8. Reading Strategy # 5
MAKE CONNECTIONS
-Connect the material to your prior knowledge
Ask:
-What does this text remind me of?
-What do I know about the topic?
-Does this text make me think of another text/TV
show/story/etc?
-How does this compare/contrast/connect to what I
already know?
e.g. – I know the divorce rate in Korea is much
higher.

SUMMARIZE
-Retell what has happened
