Pump
A pump in general may be defined as a machine, when
driven from some external source, lifts water or some
other liquid from a lower level to a higher level.
A pump may be defined as a machine, which converts
mechanical energy into pressure energy.
Classification
1. Positive displacement pump – Raciprocating pump,
Rotary Pump.
2. Rotodynamic or dynamic Pressure Pump –
Centrifugal pump.
Reciprocating pump
A reciprocating pump is a positive displacement pump,
as it discharges a definite quantity of liquid during the
displacement of its piston or plunger.
Types of Reciprocating pumps
According to Action:
1. Lift pump
2. Force Pump
According to action of fluid:
1. Single acting pump
2. Double acting pump
According to number of cylinders:
1. Single cylinder or simplex pump
2. Double cylinder or duplex Pump
3. Triple cylinder or triplex pump

Classification of Centrifugal Pump
According to type of casing :
1. Volute casing(Spiral casing)
2. Vortex casing
3. Volute casing with guide blades(Diffuser pump)
According to type of casing
According to head
1. Low head pump: 15 meter or less head.
2. Medium head pump: Head up to 16 meter to 40
meter.
3. High head pump: Greater than 40 head.
According to Impeller
1. Closed Impeller: Both side closed with plate.
2. Semi-open Impeller: One side closed with Plate.
3. Open Impeller: Fully open.
Accordiing to suction
1. Single suction pump
2. Double suction pump
According to stage
1. Single stage pump
2. Multistage pump
According to shaft position
1. Vertical shaft pump
2. Horizontal shaft pump
According to flow
1. Radial flow
2. Mixed flow
3. Axial flow
