1. 1. Nitish Kumar's popularity
Perhaps the most decisive factor for the Grand
Alliance was Nitish Kumar's popularity among Bihar
voters. Nitish Kumar emerged as the most popular
chief ministerial candidate in almost all the surveys.
The anti-incumbency factor has rarely ever been
enough to win an election and vot-
ers have started rewarding a per-
forming CM at a pan-India level.
When Narendra Modi was
Gujarat CM, Shivraj Singh
Chouhan was Madhya Pradesh
CM, Raman Singh was
Chhattisgarh CM and Navin
Patnaik was Odisha CM, all of them
won their state elections on their individ-
ual popularity, even though their parties had mixed
results in the Lok Sabha polls. By winning Bihar for the
third time, Nitish has proved that a popular and perform-
ing CM can win state elections and buck the national
trend.
2. State vs Lok Sabha
Voters are increasingly showing a tendency to differen-
tiate between different kinds of elections. They have
started electing their representatives as per the horses-
for-courses principle. This was clearly evident during
the Delhi assembly elections. While the BJP won all
seven seats during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, it
got an unexpected and unprecedented drubbing in the
2015 assembly polls and was able to win only three
out of seventy seats. A general refrain among Delhi
voters was that they preferred Narendra Modi as the
PM but Arvind Kejriwal as the CM. Taking a cue
from the Delhi elections, Nitish Kumar's communica-
tions team under Prashant Kishore, who had advised
PM Modi during the Lok Sabha polls but had joined hands
with the Bihar CM for the assembly elections, was able to
exploit this PM-CM dichotomy and brilliantly pegged it as
a "Bihari vs Bahari" fight. Not surprisingly, Bihar showed
greater preference for a Bihari.
3. The RSS chief's quota remark
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's comment on the need to
have a rethink of caste-based reservation came at the
most inopportune moment for the BJP. Bihar has
always been the validating state for the saying
"Indians don't cast their vote but vote their
caste". Bhagwat's remark on reservations
was like a "free hit" for the Grand Alliance,
with RJD chief Lalu Prasad calling it a for-
ward vs backward contest. Though the BJP
repeatedly assured the people of Bihar that
it would name an OBC as their CM after
the elections, the damage had already
been done.
4. A trust deficit between
Muslims and the BJP
There has always been a trust
deficit between Muslims and the
BJP. There are 15% Muslims in
Bihar and they were always going
to be a challenge for the BJP. The
division of Muslim votes was a big
plus for the BJP during the 2014 general
elections. However, the coming together of
Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar helped consolidate the
Muslim vote and acted as a force-multiplier in the assem-
bly elections. Moreover, incidents like the Dadri lynching
and other rows over beef, may have further motivated
Muslims to vote against the BJP.
5. Asaduddin Owaisi's no-show
Asaduddin Owaisi with his All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul
Muslimeen (AIMIM) was supposed to be the X-factor in
the Bihar elections. Overall, his entry was being counted
as a plus for the BJP. But as the elections progressed, the
Grand Alliance managed to portray Owaisi as a vote-spoil-
er and he failed to make any impact.
6. The withering away of the Congress
The Congress continues to wither away in India.
However, the Congress's loss is not turning into the
BJP's gain. In fact, the BJP paid a heavy price in
Delhi as a majority of disgruntled Congress voters
opted for AAP. Any bipolar contest minus the Congress,
especially if Muslims constitute a significant chunk of vot-
ers as in the case of Bihar, becomes more difficult for the
BJP. Knowing that it was fighting a losing battle in Bihar,
the Congress was keen to ensure the BJP not have a
free run. It was instrumental in bringing the JD(U) and
the RJD together and prevailed upon Lalu Prasad to
accept Nitish Kumar as the CM candidate. That's how
the 'grand old party' made sure the BJP did not
have an easy run.

Bihar results were not sur-
prising at all, many were
sure about Nitish Kumar and
Lalu Yadav’s victory.
However, nobody expected
BJP to lose with such a huge
margin. The beginning of the
‘End of BJP Era’ has started
with this assembly election.
Thanks to the ‘slip of
tongues’ of BJP politicians
with ‘bhagwa’ clothes (Read:
Sakshi, Prachi and
Adityanath). Majority of the
Indians are intelligent
enough and harping on reli-
gion, food, caste, does not
tally with an average Indian.
There was repercussion on
Modi’s policies. It does not
augur well for Bihar. The
strong showing of JD(U) led
Grand Alliance carved out
landslide victory. BJP will
have to change its intolerant
policies and accommodate
the interest of all. It has to
become ‘Serve dharma
sambhav’ party and not a
dividing one. Conflict-ridden
politics has no place in India.
What is at stake is the secu-
lar and democratic character
of the state. Nitish Kumar
and Grand Alliance deserve
all the accolades and con-
gratulation. Moreover, one
man show will not take the
BJP anywhere in the future
and politics is the game of
group. If the party continues
to marginalize and ignore the
local leaders and cadres, it is
definitely heading for a disas-
ter. Also, in the caste ridden
Bihar politics, development
agenda is well recognized
with Nitish at the helm. BJP
failed to project a strong
leader from its ranks in Bihar,
resulting in the rejection. It is
a clear division of votes,
upper caste voted for BJP
whereas rest voted for Lalu
Yadav and Nitish Kumar’s
Mahagathbandhan. It is also
time for BJP to decide on
party leadership. Amit Shah
unfortunately is seen as a
communal face of the party,
despite his best efforts to
push the cadres to go for the
kill. Congress took a great
decision by aligning in grand
alliance to tackle Modi’s
waves.
The grand alliance of Nitish
Kumar and Lalu Prasad
seemed to be comfortably
gaining the power, despite of
aggressive propaganda
against them. They very well
applied the butter on people
but till the end duo gave fit-
ting replies to PM Modi’s alle-
gations. The web of lies
which BJP and the multina-
tional media stitched up to
bring down Congress lead
UPA in Lok Sabha elections,
same was applied here also.
We are looking forward to the
next Lok Sabha election by
the time people would have
surely seen the lies of BJP
and will rectify their mistake
of last Lok Sabha election.
It’s really a painful defeat for
such a Grand National party. I
become very happy when
someone’s arrogance is
answered correctly. It’s too
bad that they will not learn
any lesson by this and will
use the divisive politics as
usual. BJP paid for the over-
confidence of Modi. Now, he
should learn the lesson from
the shameful defeat of Bihar
and change his arrogant
behaviour. People elected
him for the development of
this country and not for con-
demning Congress Party.
Modi should concentrate on
his duty otherwise his party
will have to pay more badly
than this in future. He should
show positive attitude and
refrain himself from negativi-
ty. Modi should realize that he
is the Prime Minister of this
country more than a BJP
campaigner. He should mind
his language and expres-
sions; people are fed up with
his foreign tours and speech-
es. They want promises
made by him to be delivered.
Bihar poll outcome was a ref-
erendum on the performance
of Narendra Modi. This is the
second successive defeat of
the BJP after Delhi Assembly
polls, would lead to realign-
ment of political forces as
“bubble” created by the last
Lok Sabha polls has finally
busted. It will reflect on his
leadership. Like entire coun-
try, people of Bihar were dis-
appointed over the perform-
ance of the Prime Minister
and his government. Modi
held as many as 31 rallies in
the state when generally
Prime Ministers address four
to five such rallies. He and
BJP need to understand that
there is anger against him
within his own party.
Margdarshak Mandal is
mainly a group of elderly BJP
leaders like L K Advani and
Murli Manohar Joshi besides
the indisposed former Prime
Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The Prime Minister as well as
Home Minister Rajnath
Singh are also members of
the Mandal which has not
had its meeting so far.

Within hours of being deported to India from Indonesia
where he was arrested, underworld don Chhota Rajan
has started singing. He has spelled out the names of
Mumbai Police officers those who has or has had links
with India’s most wanted criminal Dawood Ibrahim.
Moreover, sources said that he is also ready to expose
the names of politicians and journalists who had under-
world links. Rajan has proved one thing that the biggest
gangsters in the world are those who wear uniform, and
in India no gangster can survive without the help of
‘Khaki’ and ‘Khadi’. The motives and plot behind his
arrival is not sure, but Modi was keen in bringing
Dawood to India but they caught Rajan. Rajan had ear-
lier claimed that some in the Mumbai Police were in
touch with Dawood Ibrahim. As per the report, Rajan told
CBI during interrogation that some retired Mumbai
Police officers had acted as a bridge between Dawood
and senior cops. Rajan, after his arrest, had also
expressed reservation over plans to lodge him in a
Mumbai jail, fearing that Dawood may target him there.
Rajan was brought to New Delhi early on Friday from the
Indonesian tourist city of Bali by a joint team headed by
CBI officials to face trial in over 70 cases of murder,
extortion and drug smuggling in Delhi and Mumbai. He
was taken straight to the CBI headquarters where he
was subjected to a preliminary round of questioning.
Due to security concerns, Rajan, who has reportedly
tipped Indian security agencies about the movement of
Dawood Ibrahim and his aides, is unlikely to be taken to
a Delhi court and instead a magistrate will be brought to
the CBI headquarters for his remand. Upon his arrival,
he was taken into preventive custody of Interpol division
of the CBI till the central probe agency completes legal
formalities for registering a case of allegedly procuring
fake passport and takes over the 70 cases handed over
by Maharashtra government. Ahead of his arrival in
India, Maharashtra government made a surprise
announcement of handing over all the cases related to
the underworld don to the CBI as the agency had expert-
ise in handling such cases.

The death of former MLA Gurusharan Chhabra, who was on fast unto death demand-
ing complete prohibition of liquor and strengthening of Lokpal, triggered a blame game
between BJP and Congress whose leaders held each other responsible for the
Gandhian leader’s demise. Political parties and media are using the death for their own
benefits. Where were they when he was on hunger strike? Why they were not present
there when he was aggressively fighting for these issues. How many party leaders vis-
ited him and offered their support while he was on the strike? I bet no one. Shame on
you leaders for this type of blame game for cheap publicity. MLA Chhabra, the 65-year-
old anti-liquor crusader, was on fast since October 2. He had been admitted to SMS
hospital and was in coma for the last couple of days. Chhabra’s life could have been
saved if CM Vasundhara Raje had intervened to get the agitation called off. He was
protesting against sale and consumption of liquor and was demanding strengthening
of Lokayukta in Rajasthan. Chhabra had revived his fast after Rajasthan government
failed to implement its commitments made to him in an agreement in May.

New Delhi: The name ‘Chit Funds’ typi-
cally makes many brows rise. They come
under the media ire ever so often. But
now they have reasons to cheer! The
Parliamentary committee on finance
headed by Dr. Veerappa Moily in its recent
report on ‘Efficacy of Regulation on Chit
Funds etc’ has highlighted the crucial role
that chit funds
could play in financial inclusion and
rapped the Government for its lethargic
attitude with regard to development and
nurturing of this traditional financial inter-
mediary.
The findings clearly establish that finan-
cial scams like ‘Saradha’ had nothing to
do with Chit funds and noted that Legal
loopholes, multiplicity of governing agen-
cies and the lack of a comprehensive
mechanism to prevent these frauds help
such scams flourish. It has asked the
Centre to review the existing laws govern-
ing chit funds and remove basic infirmities
such as confusion on definition of terms,
including ‘Deposit’. The Moily panel has
flayed the government saying it was a
“reticent bystander” in dealing with the
magnitude of such frauds. The panel with
members like former PM Manmohan
Singh rued that not much action has been
taken by the SEBI against Ponzi firms
since 2010. Chit Fund Industry experts
are now on a roll and are quick to pounce
on the opportunity as they stand vindicat-
ed. Says T.S. Sivaramakrishnan, General
Secretary of AIACF, “We had all along
been pointing out that the financial scams
are not even remotely connected to chit
funds, however, neither the administrators
and regulators nor the media took note of
our protests. Everyone simply joined the
bandwagon and started pelting stones
without trying to understand the intrica-
cies. It was a chaotic nightmare.”

Dismissing claims of presence of terror outfits like the
Islamic State in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
said a campaign was underway to portray the country as
“unsafe” and pave the way for foreign military attacks like in
Pakistan.
“A propaganda is there about the presence of the Islamic
State (IS) or al-Qaeda in Bangladesh…It is being done to
create a notion that Bangladesh is unsafe,” said Hasina at
her Gonobhaban residence.
She said a series of clandestine attacks and assassinations
were carried out in a planned way in recent months and
they were attributed to international Islamist outfits to “por-
tray Bangladesh as an unsafe country to expose it to for-
eign (military) attacks like in Pakistan”.
Hasina accused her arch-rival Khaleda Zia, the chief of
main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and BNP’s
crucial ally fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami of mastermind-
ing the attacks and carrying out the propaganda. She said
the suspects tracked down so far in connection with the
recent attacks were found to have links with BNP and
Jamaat.“Could I ask the people to ponder what will happen
if it is established the (foreign) Islamists presence in
Bangladesh …What is happening in Syria, Iraq and
Afghanistan,” she said. The Prime Minister also criticised
the Islamic State and al-Qaeda for the atrocities they were
carrying out in the name of religion.“Won’t the Muslims
(across the world) rise to their consciousness,” she asked.
Five writers and bloggers along with a publisher have been
hacked to death in Bangladesh in the past two and half
years, five of them since January this year with families and
friends of the deceased alleging failure on the part of police

A twin suicide bombing by women attackers in the flashpoint area of Lake Chad today
killed two people and wounded 14 others, a security source in the Chadian capital
N’Djamena said.
“The two women suicide bombers and two civilians died in the blast,” the source told
AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that “14 others were injured” in the attack
blamed on Nigeria’s Boko Haram group on Ngouboua village near the Nigerian border.
The village has suffered repeated attacks by Boko Haram jihadists since they first
launched operations in Chad in February.
Suicide bombings — many by women and girls — are fast becoming Boko Haram’s
preferred method of inflicting civilian casualties.
The deadliest attack on Chad’s side of the lake took place on October 10, when a triple
suicide attack at Baga Sola killed 41 people, according to the Chadian government.
Since the start of the year, the Chadian army has been on the frontline of a regional
military operation against Boko Haram whose attacks have spread from northeast
Nigeria, its traditional stronghold, to the neighbouring countries of Chad, Niger and
Cameroon.
Boko Haram, which is affiliated with the Islamic State group operating in Syria and Iraq,
has been hit hard by the offensive, losing territory, but has launched attacks and bomb-
ings in response.

Emirates Airlines President Tim Clark said on Sunday
he expected the crash of a Russian passenger jet in
Egypt was a “game changer” for aviation that would
result in demands for stringent aviation security
worldwide.
Speaking at the Dubai Airshow, Clark added that he
had ordered a security review, but was not suspend-
ing any flights as a result of the disaster.
“What happened in Sharm al-Sheikh last week, and to
a lesser extent with the … (Germanwings) aircraft,
are game changers for our industry,” he said, refer-
ring to the crash of a Germanwings airliner in the
French Alps in March.
“They have to be addressed at industry level because
no doubt the countries — US, Europe — I would think
will make some fairly stringent, draconian demands
on the way aviation works with security.”
Islamic State militants fighting security forces in
Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula have said they brought down
the Airbus AIR.PA A321, which crashed 23 minutes
after taking off from the resort of Sharm al-Sheikh a
week ago, killing all 224 passengers.
Clark added that taking measures to improve securi-
ty was a job for “airports and countries”.
“I think there will be some hard thinking to do if what
is alleged to have happened in Sharm al-Shaikh is
correct.”

Symbol of tolerance
Lotus Temple in the national capital stands tall as a true symbol of peace and commu-
nal harmony. The Baha'i House of Worship, an architectural marvel, may soon become
the fourth world heritage site in the city if things go according to plan.
The proposal has been pitched by the temple's trustee, the National Spiritual Assembly
of the Baha'is of India, which has appointed India National Trust for Art and Cultural
Heritage (Intach) to prepare the nomination dossiers The site was included on the
Unesco's "tentative list of world heritage sites" in April 2014. The Delhi government is
also extending cooperation to the nomination process, said sources.
"The temple is unique not just for its architectural features, but also because it symbol-
ises the principles of Baha'i faith-unity among mankind and all religions. The Baha'i
faith is not represented by any statue or idol, everyone who comes to the temple feels
a spiritual connection to their creator, whatever religion or background he/she may
belong to," said Nazneen Rowhani, secretary general of the spiritual assembly of the
Baha'is of India.
