The origin of social work
Education in India is
about eighty years old
and owes its origin with
the establishment of Sir
Dorabji Tata Graduate
School of Social Work in
1936 (now known as Tata
Institute of Social sci-
ences, Mumbai). At
Present there are more
than 350 schools of
Social work in India (the
exact official figure is not
known). Most of the
schools of Social work
are situated in urban
areas leaving little scope
for the rural youths who
are being deprived of
Social Work education.
Some of the social work
institutions are self
financed and charges
high fees. The social
work education is still
struggling for profession-
al status like other pre-
vailing professions like
Medicine, engineering,
law, architecture, man-
agement and accountan-
cy. It is being considered
a semi profession. The
unchanging syllabus, syl-
labus on the American
patterns of Social work
education, lack of indige-
nous literature, casual
approach to field work
education, unscientific
and subjective evaluation
of field work, skewed
teacher-student ratios
weak professional asso-
ciations, conflicts among
the members of profes-
sional associations, dom-
inance of few members
in professional associa-
tions, poor quality of
social work research
happens to be major
impediments in the pro-
fessionalization of social
work education in India.
The absence of National
Council on Social Work
education is also another
major obstacle in the pro-
fessionalization of Social
work education.
Since the beginning,
social work education in
India was offered through
conventional regular
mode. However, in the
past one decade there
has been emphasis on
social work education
through distance mode
and is popularized due to
the pioneering efforts of
Professor Gracious
Thomas.
The easy access of dis-
tance education even in
the remote regions of
India as well as nominal
fees enables the disad-
vantaged sections of the
population to undertake
social work education at
the Bachelors and
Masters level. The social
work education through
distance mode has pro-
vided employment to
large numbers of gradu-
ates who are offering
their services in the solu-
tion of various kinds of
social problems in our
country by engaging
themselves in various
governmental, non- gov-
ernmental organizations
as well as civil society
organizations.. They are
also playing significant
role in the socio econom-
ic empowerment of the
disadvantaged sections
of the Indian Population
besides harnessing,
capacitating their skills,
livelihood leading to their
sustainable human
development. IGNOU
Started social work edu-
cation programme both in
Hindi and English medi-
um in the year 2004 with
the mandate of reaching
the unreached. The BSW
and MSW programme at
IGNOU (Indira Gandhi
National Open University,
New Delhi) was devel-
oped in response to
requests from social
service agencies across
the country. Some of the
other Universities in India
also started offering
social work education in
open and distance learn-
ing mode. Madhya
Pradesh Bhoj Open
University, Annamalai
University, U.P. Rajarshi
Open University,
Uttarakhand University,
Magadha University and
Vardhaman Mahaveer
Open University are
offering social work edu-
cation through open and
distance learning. The
Indira Gandhi National
Open University has
study centres in various
parts of India including
remote regions. The
course materials are of
high standards prepared
by leading social work
educators of India. The
IGNOU has been contin-
uously providing a large
number of trained social
workers every year who
mostly concentrate at
grassroot level offering
their services to meet the
emerging social prob-
lems.

SocialWorkEducationthroughOpenandDistanceLearning:AViableSolutionforSocialProblems
The ongoing tussle
between Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) government and BJP
at the centre was followed
with a new scam. Recently,
AAP was attacked over the
appointment of 21 MLAs as
parliamentary secretaries,
there after they trained its
guns at the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) for
shielding former Delhi Chief
Minister Sheila Dikshit over
the alleged 400 crore water
tanker scam. A political war
of words erupted soon after
between the BJP and AAP.
Both traded charges of try-
ing to cover up the scam.
AAP leader Dilip Pandey
accused BJP of being an
ally of the Congress Party.
Three days after the AAP
government announced it
had sent the report of a
fact-finding committee on
water tankers distribution
management systems
scam to the Lieutenant
Governor and the Centre,
so the report has been for-
warded to the Anti-
Corruption Branch (ACB)
for investigation. Trouble
mounted for the former
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila
Dikshit when a report of a
fact-finding panel on the
alleged 400-crore water
tanker scam linking her,
was forwarded to anti-graft
agency Anti-Corruption
Branch (ACB) by
Lieutenant Governor
Najeeb Jung for further
investigation.
The report by a committee
of the Delhi Jal Board was
sent to Jung by the AAP
government for probe by
either CBI or Delhi’s ACB
following persistent
demand by the city BJP
leader Vijender Gupta.
Jung has also forwarded to
ACB a complaint filed with
him by Gupta accusing
Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal of “suppressing”
the committee’s report into
the tanker scam for 11
months. Last week, the
AAP Government had
made the committee’s
report public after Gupta
demanded from Kejriwal in
Delhi Assembly to do the
same, as he filed three dif-
ferent FIRs against the peo-
ple involved in this scam
including Madam Dikshit.
He alleged instead of can-
celling tenders issued by
the previous government,
the AAP government chose
to continue with the wrong-
doers, “thereby perpetuat-
ing the crime”.
AAP hit back alleging that
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi is trying to protect
Sheila Dikshit. As the anti-
corruption bureau and CBI
come directly under him
what stopped him from act-
ing against Sheila Dikshit
for so long? The “tanker
scam” relates to allegations
that cropped up between
2008 and 2011, the
Congress government led
by Sheila Dikshit bypassed
the rules and caused losses
worth crores while awarding
tenders for water tankers at
much higher rates to unde-
serving companies. Dikshit
was the chief minister of
Delhi for three straight
terms between from 1998 to
2013. Her meeting with
Congress president Sonia
Gandhi sparked speculation
that she could be fielded by
the party as its chief minis-
terial candidate in Uttar
Pradesh, where elections
will be held next year.
Is Modi shielding Sheila Dikshit? A month after conducting a ‘havan’ for Donald Trump’s
victory in the United States’ presidential elections, rarely
known right-wing group Hindu Sena organised a birthday
bash for him at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The celebrations
included a seven-kg birthday cake, balloons, Trump’s
poster brandishing a gun and some children playing the
birthday song on guitars.
Sena chief Vishnu Gupta told that Mr. Trump brandishing
a gun would strike fear in the hearts of the ISI and Islamic
terrorists. It will send across the message that they still
have a few months to reform themselves before Mr.
Trump becomes president of United States. The crazy
Gupta, put on a birthday cap on his head, cut the three
layered colourful cake before offering a piece of it to
Trump’s poster. His supporters were cheering him.
A self-confessed admirer of Trump, Gupta has been
using his name to remain in news ever since the Delhi
Police threatened to ‘extern’ him from the city for his fre-
quent indulgence in mischief. Moreover, the media too is
giving undue coverage to such issues. What’s Gupta’s
intention behind these stunts, no one knows. However,
he might be unaware that this Trump equally hates
Indians also. The celebrations termed as desperate pub-
licity stunt by social media sites users. Donald Trump,
the controversial Republican presidential candidate,
once again blamed India for taking away jobs from
Americans, pledging to bring them back if elected presi-
dent even as the ‘Trump mania’ appeared to have picked
up in the US ahead of “Super Tuesday” showdown. I
hope these Hindu Sena publicity mongers could see this.
The 69-year-old real estate tycoon who became a politi-
cian only last summer has been drawing thousands of
crowd across the country, hoped to “seal the deal”.

Q1. You took a short break
after marriage. What prompt-
ed you to take up Baalveer?
Ans: To be honest it's purely
the passion of acting and
every actress takes a break
after marriage because I
believe your marriage
deserves that amount of
attention and my husband
definitely deserves a lot of
attention. So I'm very glad to
have taken that break
because also as an actor it
helps you rest as well as reju-
venate and to come back and
understand that you really
have the passion towards act-
ing. So, Baalveer fortunately
came at the right time
although I've been getting
quite a few offers to play neg-
ative roles in a few daily soaps
and as I live in Abu Dhabi now
and I can't commit to a 26 day
contract, SAB TV and the pro-
duction house helped me get
a contract where they finish
shooting my bit in 10 days a
month, so that gives me the
best of both the worlds.
Q2. Tell us about your char-
acter on the show
Ans: The character is called
Prachandika and this charac-
ter really works as it looks dif-
ferent from all the negative
roles that have been por-
trayed on the show before.

New Delhi: 'Teen Taal' is a ready to
release Hindi feature film, based on the
true story of a classical Tabla player, Attar
Singh Chowdhary. Written, produced and
directed by new filmmaker, Shakirul Alam
from England; he has teamed up with new
executive producer, Jahangir Jaz Ali (also
from the UK) to finance this very original
feature.
Recently the team was in the capital to
promote the movie at FLYP MTV Café,
Connaught Place, New Delhi, where a
press conference was organized with star
cast Gaurav Chowdhary, Shivan Thukral,
Barkha Sharma, Director Shakirul Alam &
distributor Rakesh Jain.
Set completely in the heart of Delhi, the
inspiring story intercuts between two eras;
the 1970s and the present day. Attar’s real
son, Gaurav Chowdhary will be seen in
the lead, playing two roles; his own char-
acter and also Attar’s character.
Talking about the movie, Shakirul Alam
said, whilst working on another project
which is in development, I met a talented
upcoming actor and musician (Tabla drum
player), Gaurav Chowdhury in Mumbai in
2012 and as we became friends, he told
me about the touching story of his father,
Attar Singh Chowdhury, who had a dream
to spread his music to the world, but
unfortunately due to several hardships
and a serious heart condition, he could
not take it further. Attar later passed away
in his early 50's leaving behind an unfin-
ished dream.

Politicians have been warned to review
their security after Labour MP Jo
Coxwas shot and stabbed to death in
the street outside her constituency
advice surgery.
A Number 10 spokeswoman said a
reminder of safety guidance has been
sent out to MPs after Mrs Cox was
attacked in Birstall, West Yorkshire.
The advice includes steps representa-
tives can take to stay safe when they
are “out and about” and suggests if they
have any concerns they should contact
their local police.
Mrs Cox, mother of two children, aged
three and five, was attacked by a man
reportedly shouting “Britain first” at
lunchtime on Thursday.
Her death comes three months after a
man was cautioned for sending her
“malicious communications”, but police
have confirmed this was not the same
man who was arrested on Thursday fol-
lowing the attack.
Witnesses said her assailant kicked and
stabbed her and then shot her several
times, the final shot aimed at her head.
The alleged gunman has been named
locally as Tommy Mair (52) who neigh-
bours in Birstall have described as “a
loner”. He was arrested near the scene
soon after the attack.
The MP’s husband Brendan said:
“Today is the beginning of a new chap-
ter in our lives. More difficult, more
painful, less joyful, less full of love.
“I and Jo’s friends and family are going
to work every moment of our lives to
love and nurture our kids and to fight
against the hate that killed Jo.
“Jo believed in a better world and she
fought for it every day of her life with an
energy and a zest for life that would
exhaust most people. “She would have
wanted two things above all else to hap-
pen now: one, that our precious children
are bathed in love, and two, that we all
unite to fight against the hatred that
killed her. “Hate doesn’t have a creed,
race or religion, it is poisonous.

youth clubs there.
In addition, Dr Jitendra Singh informed that his Ministry
will be organizing Yoga day programmes in 391
Universities, 16000 colleges and 12000 schools across
the country.

A mobile phone on silent-

stolen two-wheeler within
a span of 24 hours.
Yogesh Kanjar, owner of
an automobile service cen-
ter, noticed his Honda
Activa missing from his
usual parking spot. The
Poisar resident searched
the nearby area initially,
but after failing to locate
his bike, he decided to file
a complaint with Kandivali

While registering the FIR,
Kanjar informed the cops
that his cell phone was
also kept under the

cops asked him to call the
number, the phone rang
but it did not alert the cul-

silent mode.
The call allowed officials to
trace the phone’s location
using mobile tower data.
