Elvis Has Left the Building
This phrase was made famous by announcers at Elvis
Presley’s concerts. It was to ensure the hopeful,
lingering crowd that no encore would be possible. Elvis
is no longer here. It’s impossible for him to return!
We are now 70 years removed from when the phrase
was first uttered. It now means something entirely
different. The King has left the building, never to return.
Not so with the King of Kings.
“And behold, two men were talking with Him {Jesus},
Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke
of His departure, which he was about to accomplish at
Jerusalem” (Luke 9:30-31).
Jesus was encouraged by Moses who understood the
Exodus. Moses left the buildings of Egypt in the
departure from slavery into the Promised Land. Elijah
understood what it was like to proclaim the words of
the Father and to “leave the building” in a chariot of
fire. What better individuals in history to encourage the
departure of the King of Kings?
Jesus left in a way that no one else could. He left the
tomb, walking past the rolling stone. Rolling Stone
magazine could only report that Elvis the king had left
the building, never to return. Not so with the King of
Kings.
“Elvis has left the building” was coined out of
necessity, and it was not just to clear the venue. In 1956,
while Elvis performed at a Louisiana festival, a group
of over eager teens would not be seated. This hindered
the next performer from coming on stage. “Elvis has left
the building” meant the show must go on without him. It
reminds me of the apostles staring at the cloud as Jesus
ascended. The angels might have well told the Apostles,
“The show must go on.”
“And when He had said these things, as they were
looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him out
of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven
as He went, behold, two men stood by them in white
robes, and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand
looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from
you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw
him go into heaven’” (Acts 1:9-11).
So, the king of rock and roll and the King of Kings have
left the building, but only one King will return.
Are you ready for the encore?

Thank You
Thank you to everyone who helped with our Friday night
singing. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare,
decorated and served, cleaned up, brought food, ran the
control room, took part in the singing and attended. We
had 20 total song leaders from 8 different congregations.
We enjoyed a great night of singing praises to God.
Thank you,
Ryan Cobb
