Zathrin (Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate Tablets)
is used to treat many different types of infections
caused by bacteria, such as lower respiratory tract
infections, upper respiratory tract infections, skin
infections, ear infections, chlamydia trachomatis
conjunctivitis and trachoma, prevention of
infection due to mycobacterium avium-
intracellulare complex (mac) disease, acute
streptococcal pharyngitis/tonsillitis and sexually
transmitted diseases.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Zathrin
tablets is Azithromycin Dihydrate.
Each film coated Zathrin tablet contains either
250 mg or 500 mg of Azithromycin
(anhydrous) (as Azithromycin Dihydrate IP).

available under various Drug trade names
that include Zithromax, Azee, Azintas ,
Azicip, Azipro, Zitrocin, Zedd, Atryn,
Auricin, Avindo, Avitla, Azintas , Azicip,
Azipro, A-OD, Atm, Atm-XL, Azitas, Azax,
Azidel, Azifine, and Avzeth.

Uses of Zathrin Tablets
Zathrin (Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate Tablets) is a macrolide-type
antibiotic which is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections in
many different parts of the body. It works by stopping the growth of
bacteria.
Zathrin tablets are used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by
designated, susceptible bacteria: Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic
bronchitis in adults, Acute bacterial sinusitis in adults, Uncomplicated skin
and skin structure infections in adults, Urethritis and cervicitis in adults,
Genital ulcer disease in men, Acute otitis media in pediatric patients (6
months of age and older), Community-acquired pneumonia in adults and
pediatric patients (6 months of age and older) and Pharyngitis/tonsillitis in
adults and pediatric patients (2 years of age and older)

Zathrin Tablets Dosage
The dosage of Zathrin Tablets (Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate
Tablets) is given below:
Community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity), Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
(second-line therapy), Skin/skin structure (uncomplicated): 500 mg as a
single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 through 5.
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(mild to moderate): 500 mg once a day for 3 days or 500 mg as a single
dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 through 5.
Conjunctivitis and trachoma due to Chlamydia trachomatis: 1000 mg
either as a single dose or once weekly for up to three weeks
Genital ulcer disease (chancroid): One single 1 gm dose

Zathrin Tablets Dosage
The dosage of Zathrin Tablets (Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate
Tablets) is given below:
Acute bacterial sinusitis: 500 mg once a day for 3 days
For prophylaxis against MAC infections in patients infected with
the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the dose is 1200
mg once per week.
For the treatment of DMAC infections in patients with advanced HIV
infection, the recommended dose is 600 mg once a day.
Azithromycin should be administered in combination with
other antimycobacterial agents that have shown in vitro activity
against MAC, such as ethambutol at the approved dose.

Zathrin Tablets Contraindications
Zathrin tablets are contraindicated in persons with a
hypersensitivity (allergy) to Azithromycin Dihydrate,
Erythromycin, Any Macrolide Or Ketolide Drug or any of the
other ingredients of this medicine.
This medicine is also contraindicated in patients with a history of
cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior
use of Azithromycin.

Storage Instructions
Zathrin Tablets (Generic Azithromycin
Dihydrate Tablets) have to be stored at
controlled room temperature i.e. from 20°C to
25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions
permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away
from children and pets.

Warnings
Before taking Azithromycin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are
allergic to it; or to other antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin,
telithromycin, or if you have any other allergies. This medicines may contain
inactive ingredients, which could cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Ask your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical
history, especially of: liver disease, kidney disease, a certain muscle disease
(myasthenia gravis).
Serious (including fatal) allergic and skin reactions: Discontinue Zathrin if
reaction occurs.
Hepatotoxicity: Severe, and sometimes fatal, hepatotoxicity has been reported.
Discontinue Zathrin immediately if signs and symptoms of hepatitis occur.

Warnings
Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (IHPS): Following the use of Azithromycin in
neonates (treatment up to 42 days of life), IHPS has been reported. Direct parents and
caregivers to contact their physician if vomiting or irritability with feeding occurs.
Azithromycin could cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation).
QT prolongation can rarely cause serious (rarely fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat and
other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that need medical attention right
away. This risk which can be fatal should be considered in patients with certain
cardiovascular disorders including known QT prolongation or history torsades de
pointes, those with proarrhythmic conditions, and with other drugs that prolong the
QT interval.
Before using Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate (Zathrin Tablets), tell your doctor or
pharmacist of all the drugs you take and if you have any of the following conditions:
certain heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG),
family history of certain heart problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac
death).

Warnings
Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of
QT prolongation. This risk may increase if you use certain drugs (such as
diuretics/"water pills") or if you have conditions such as severe sweating,
diarrhea, or vomiting. Talk to your doctor about using Azithromycin safely.
Cardiovascular Death: Some observational studies have shown an approximately
two-fold increased short-term potential risk of acute cardiovascular death in
adults exposed to Azithromycin relative to other antibacterial drugs, including
Amoxicillin. Consider balancing this potential risk with treatment benefits when
prescribing Zathrin .
Clostridioides difficile-Associated Diarrhea: Evaluate patients if diarrhea occurs.
Zathrin (Generic Azithromycin Dihydrate Tablets) may exacerbate muscle
weakness in persons with myasthenia gravis.
Azithromycin may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not
work as well. Do not have any immunizations/vaccinations while using this
medication unless your doctor tells you to.

Warnings
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products
you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal
products).
Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug,
especially QT prolongation.
During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly
needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
Azithromycin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-
feeding.

Zathrin Tablets Side Effects
Commonly reported side effects of Azithromycin Dihydrate (Zathrin tablets)
were related to the gastrointestinal tract, e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or
abdominal pain. The most frequently reported adverse events in patients
receiving the multiple-dose regimen of Azithromycin were related to the
gastrointestinal system with diarrhoea / loose stools (5%), nausea (3%) and
abdominal pain (3%) being the most frequently reported. No other side effects
occurred in patients on the multiple dose regimen with a frequency greater
than 1%.
Side effects that occurred with a frequency of 1% or less included the
following: Palpitations, chest pain, Dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting, melaena
and cholestatic jaundice, Monilia, vaginitis and nephritis, Dizziness, headache,
vertigo and somnolence, Fatigue,Rash, pruritus, photosensitivity and angio-
oedema.

Overdose
Most adverse events experienced in cases of Azithromycin Dihydrate
(Zathrin Tablets) overdose were similar in type and could be more
frequent than those seen at normal doses. The incidence of tinnitus and
ototoxicity is more frequent in overdosage than at normal doses.
The typical symptoms of an overdose with macrolide antibiotics include
reversible loss of hearing, severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In the
event of overdose, the administration of medicinal charcoal and general
symptomatic treatment and supportive measures are indicated as
required.

Zathrin Tablets During Pregnancy
Azithromycin Dihydrate (Zathrin tablets) has been classified by the
US FDA as Pregnancy Category B.
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and
there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Available data from published literature and postmarketing experience over
several decades with Azithromycin use in pregnant women have not identified
any drug-associated risks for major birth defects, miscarriage, or adverse
maternal or fetal outcomes.
Developmental toxicity studies with Azithromycin in rats, mice, and rabbits
showed no drug-induced fetal malformations at doses up to 4, 2, and 2 times,
respectively, an adult human daily dose of 500 mg based on body surface area.
