Lan Capsules (Generic Lansoprazole Capsules)

Lan capsules (Generic Lansoprazole capsules) is an effective
medication which inhibits the stomach's production of acid.
It is used for the Treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcer,
Treatment of reflux oesophagitis, Prophylaxis of reflux
oesophagitis, Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
concurrently given with appropriate antibiotic therapy for
treatment of H.pylori-associated ulcers, Treatment of NSAID-
associated benign gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients
requiring continued NSAID treatment, Prophylaxis of NSAID-
associated gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers in patients at risk
requiring continued therapy, Symptomatic Gastroesophageal
Reflux Disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient present in Lan capsules is
Lansoprazole. Each capsule contains 15 mg or 30 mg of
Lansoprazole in the form of enteric coated pellets.

Lansoprazole Capsules – Brand Names
Lansoprazole capsules are available under
various drug trade names that include
Prevacid, Lanzol, Lan, Splanz, Lansozol,
Lanzap, Helicid, Zoton, Inhibitol, Monolitum,
Fenzer, Propilan, Lancibay, Levant, Lancus,
Lanpro, Lansec, and Lans-OD.

Uses of Lan Capsules
Lan capsules (Generic Lansoprazole capsules) is used to treat certain
conditions where there is too much acid in the stomach. It is used to
treat duodenal and gastric ulcers, gastric ulcers caused by NSAID use,
erosive esophagitis, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
GERD is a condition wherein the acid in the stomach washes back up
into the esophagus. Sometimes lansoprazole is used in combination
with antibiotics (eg, amoxicillin, clarithromycin) to treat ulcers
associated with an infection caused by H. pylori bacteria.
Lansoprazole is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES),
which is a condition where the stomach produces too much acid.
Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by decreasing
the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

Adults:
Lan capsules (Generic Lansoprazole capsules) are indicated for
Healing and long-term management of reflux oesophagitis.
Healing and long-term management for patients with duodenal ulcer.
Healing of benign gastric ulcer. Patients whose gastric or duodenal ulcer is
not associated with ingestion of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
require treatment with antimicrobial agents in addition to antisecretory drugs
whether on first presentation or on recurrence.
Patients with benign peptic lesions that do not respond to H2-receptor
antagonists.
Eradication of H. pylori from the upper gastrointestinal tract in patients with
peptic ulcer or chronic gastritis when used in combination with appropriate
antibiotics.
Relief of reflux-like and/or ulcer-like symptoms associated with acid-related
dyspepsia.

Paediatric And Adolescent Patients 1 To 17 Years Of Age:
Lan capsules (Generic Lansoprazole capsules) are
indicated for
Treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, including
all grades of oesophagitis.
Healing of erosive oesophagitis.

Lan Capsules Dosage
The adult dosage of Lan Capsules (Generic Lansoprazole Capsules) is
given below:
Duodenal Ulcers:
Short-Term Treatment:15 mg Once daily for 4 wks
Maintenance of Healed: 15 mg Once daily
H. pylori Eradication to Reduce Recurrence of Duodenal Ulcer:
Triple Therapy: Lan capsules 30 mg, Amoxicillin 1 gram and Clarithromycin
500 mg twice daily for 10 or 14 days
Dual Therapy: Lan capsules 30 mg and Amoxicillin 1 gram three times daily
for 14 days.
Benign Gastric Ulcer:
Short-Term Treatment 30 mg Once daily up to 8 weeks

Lan Capsules Dosage
The adult dosage of Lan Capsules (Generic Lansoprazole Capsules)
is given below:
NSAID-associated Gastric Ulcer:
Healing: 30 mg Once daily for 8 weeks
Risk Reduction: 15 mg Once daily up to 12 weeks
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Short-Term Treatment of
Symptomatic GERD: 15 mg Once daily up to 8 weeks
Erosive Esophagitis (EE):
Short-Term Treatment of Erosive Esophagitis (EE): 30 mg Once daily
up to 8 weeks
Maintenance of Healing of Erosive Esophagitis (EE):15 mg Once daily
for 8 weeks

Lan Capsules Dosage
The adult dosage of Lan Capsules (Generic Lansoprazole
Capsules) is given below:
Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions Including Zollinger-
Ellison Syndrome:
60 mg Once daily

Lan Capsules Contraindications
Lan capsules are contraindicated in persons with a
hypersensitivity (allergy) to Lansoprazole or any of the
other ingredients of this medicine.
Hypersensitivity reactions can include anaphylaxis,
anaphylactic shock, angioedema, bronchospasm, acute
interstitial nephritis, and urticarial.

Storage Instructions
have to be stored at controlled room temperature
i.e. from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) with excursions
permitted between 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away
from children and pets.

Warnings
When treating a gastric ulcer with Lansoprazole the possibility of malignant
gastric tumour must be excluded because Lansoprazole can mask the
symptoms and delay the diagnosis.
Lansoprazole must be used with caution in patients with moderate and
severe hepatic dysfunction.
In patients suffering from gastro-duodenal ulcers, the possibility of H. pylori
infection as an etiological factor must be considered.
Due to the fact that limited safety data for patients on maintenance
treatment for periods longer than 1 year is available, regular review of the
treatment and a thorough risk/benefit assessment must be regularly be
performed in these patients.
Rare cases of colitis have been reported in patients taking Lansoprazole.
Therefore, in the case of severe and/or persistent diarrhoea, discontinuation
of therapy should be considered.

Warnings
The treatment for the prevention of peptic ulceration of patients in need
of continuous NSAID treatment should be restricted to high risk
patients.
Severe hypomagnesaemia has been observed in patients treated with
PPIs like Lansoprazole capsules for at least three months, and in most
cases for a year. Serious manifestations of hypomagnesaemia such as
fatigue, tetany, delirium, convulsions, dizziness and ventricular
arrhythmia can occur but they may begin insidiously and be overlooked.
For patients expected to be on prolonged treatment or who take PPIs
with digoxin or drugs that may cause hypomagnesaemia (e.g., diuretics),
doctors should consider measuring magnesium levels before starting
PPI treatment and periodically during treatment.

Warnings
Proton pump inhibitors, especially if used in high doses and over long
durations of more than 1 year, may modestly increase the risk of hip,
wrist and spine fracture, predominantly in the elderly or in presence of
other recognised risk factors.
Proton pump inhibitors like Lan (Lansoprazole Capsules) are
associated with very infrequent cases of Subacute Cutaneous Lupus
Erythematosus (SCLE).
Adverse reactions of this medication such as dizziness, vertigo,
visual disturbances and somnolence may occur. Under these
conditions the ability to react may be decreased.

Lan Capsules Side Effects
Most commonly reported Lansoprazole (Lan Capsules)
Side effects with an incidence rate of 1% or more are
Headache, dizziness, Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain,
constipation, vomiting, flatulence, dry mouth or throat,
constipation, increase in liver enzyme levels, urticaria,
itching, rash and fatigue.

Overdose
The effects of overdose on Lansoprazole (Lan Capsules) in humans
are not known (although the acute toxicity is likely to be low) and,
consequently, instruction for treatment cannot be given.
However, daily doses of up to 180 mg of Lansoprazole orally and up
to 90 mg of Lansoprazole intravenously have been administered in
trials without any significant adverse effects. In the case of suspected
overdose the patient should be monitored. Lansoprazole is not
significantly eliminated by haemodialysis. If required, gastric
emptying, charcoal and symptomatic therapy is recommended.

Lan Capsules During Pregnancy
Lansoprazole (Lan Capsules) is classified by the US FDA as
Pregnancy Category B.
Reproduction studies on animals have revealed no evidence of
impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to Lansoprazole.
However, no adequate or well-controlled studies have been
conducted in pregnant women. Since animal reproduction
studies are not always predictive of human response, this
medicine should be used during pregnancy only if clearly
needed.
