Divaine Tablets by Cipla (Generic Minocycline Hydrochloride Tablets)

Divaine (Generic Minocycline Hydrochloride Tablets) is
used to treat the following infections due to susceptible
microorganisms: acne, gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal
urethritis, syphilis, prostatitis, acute and chronic
bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lung abscess, pneumonia, ear,
nose and throat infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic
inflammatory disease, skin and soft tissue infections,
ophthalmological infections, nocardiosis, prophylactic
treatment of asymptomatic meningococcal carriers, pre-
and post-operative prophylaxis of infection, trachoma,
and inclusion conjunctivitis.

Active Ingredient
The active ingredient contained in Divaine tablets is Minocycline
Hydrochloride.
Each film-coated Divaine tablet contains Minocycline Hydrochloride,
BP equivalent to 50 mg or 100 mg of Minocycline.

Minocycline Hydrochloride Tablets – Brand Names
Minocycline Hydrochloride tablets are
available under various drug trade
names that include Solodyn, Cynomycin
from Wyeth, Divaine from Cipla , Minolox
from Micro Gratia, Minoz from Ranbaxy
and Nidcyclin from Nidus.

Uses of Divaine Tablets
Divaine (Generic Minocycline Hydrochloride tablets) is used to treat
pimples and red bumps (non-nodular inflammatory lesions) that occur
with moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and
older.
Minocycline tablets are used to treat bacterial infections in many
different parts of the body. It is also used to treat anthrax infection and
other infections in patients who cannot receive penicillins.
Minocycline belongs to the class of medicines known as tetracycline
antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.
However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus
infections.

Divaine Tablets Dosage
The dosage of Divaine tablets (Generic Minocycline Hydrochloride
tablets) for various indications is given below:
Usual Adult Dose for Acne: The initial dose: 50 to 100 mg orally twice
a day for 3 to 6 weeks or until improvement occurs and the
maintenance dose: 50 to 100 mg orally once a day.
Usual Adult Dose for Actinomycosis: The initial dosage is 100 mg
orally every 12 hours. The duration of Initial parenteral therapy for 2
to 6 weeks, followed by oral therapy for a total duration of 6 to 12
months.
Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Infection: 200 mg initially followed by
100 mg orally every 12 hours; alternatively, 100 to 200 mg initially
followed by 50 mg orally 4 times a day has been used.

The dosage of Divaine tablets (Generic Minocycline
Hydrochloride tablets) for various indications is given below:
Usual Adult Dose for Meningitis - Meningococcal: Elimination of
Neisseria meningitidis carrier state: 100 mg orally every 12 hours
for 5 days. For this indication Rifampin, Ciprofloxacin, or
Ceftriaxone are considered first-line agents.
Usual Adult Dose for Skin or Soft Tissue Infection: Mycobacterium
marinum: 100 mg orally every 12 hours for at least 3 months.
Vibrio vulnificus: 100 mg orally every 12 hours plus Cefotaxime 2 g
IV every 8 hours or Ceftazidime 1 to 2 g IV every 8 hours.

Usual Adult Dose for Skin and Structure Infection: Mycobacterium
marinum: 100 mg orally every 12 hours for at least 3 months.
Vibrio vulnificus: 100 mg IV or orally every 12 hours plus
Cefotaxime 2 g IV every 8 hours or Ceftazidime 1 to 2 g IV every 8
hours.
Uncomplicated Gonococcal Infections Other Than Urethritis and
Anorectal Infections: In men, 200 mg initially, followed by 100 mg
every 12 hours for a minimum of 4 days, with post-therapy
cultures within 2 to 3 days. Adult females may require more
prolonged therapy.

Uncomplicated Gonococcal Urethritis in Men: 100 mg, every 12
hours, for 5 days is recommended.
Uncomplicated Non-Gonococcal Urethral Infection in Adults
Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Ureaplasmaurealyticum: 100
mg orally, every 12 hours, for at least 7 days.
Syphilis: The usual dosage of Divaine Tablets should be
administered over a period of 10 to 15 days. Close follow-up,
including laboratory tests, is recommended.

Pneumonia Caused By Susceptible organisms: The usual
dosage of Divaine Tablets is 200 mg initially, followed by 100
mg every 12 hours. Alternatively, if more frequent doses are
preferred, two or four 50 mg tablets may be given initially,
followed by one 50 mg four times daily. Therapy should be
continued for at least 24 to 48 hours after symptoms and fever
have subsided.

Divaine Tablets Contraindications
Divaine tablets are contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity
to Minocycline Hydrochloride, any of the tetracyclines or any other
component of this medication.

Storage Instructions
Divaine (Generic Minocycline Hydrochloride tablets) have to be
stored at controlled room temperature i.e. from 20°C to 25°C
(68°F to 77°F) with excursions permitted between 15° to 30°C
(59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines away from children and
pets.

Warnings
While undergoing therapy with this medication, avoid sunlight,
sunlamps, and tanning beds, since Divaine tablets can make your skin
sensitive to the sun and the light from sunlamps and tanning beds. You
could get severe sunburn. Protect your skin while out in sunlight.
You should not drive or operate dangerous machinery until you know
how Divaine affects you. Divaine tablets can cause you to feel dizzy
or lightheaded, or have a spinning feeling (vertigo).
Advise patients that Minocycline may cause central nervous system
side effects including light-headedness, dizziness, or vertigo.
The use of Divaine (Minocycline tablets) during tooth development
(last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 8 years)
can cause permanent discoloration of the teeth (yellow-gray-brown).

Warnings
In case pseudomembranous colitis occurs, discontinue Divaine.
If liver injury is suspected, discontinue Divaine.
In case renal impairment exists, Minocycline doses may need to be
adjusted to avoid excessive systemic accumulations of the drug and
possible liver toxicity.
Divaine (Minocycline Hydrochloride tablets) may cause pseudotumor
cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension) in adults and adolescents.
Discontinue in case symptoms occur.
Minocycline has been associated with autoimmune syndromes;
discontinue Divaine tablets immediately if symptoms occur.
Divaine (Minocycline tablets) has been associated with anaphylaxis,
serious skin reactions, erythema multiforme, and DRESS syndrome.
Discontinue Minocycline tablets immediately in case symptoms are
observed.

Divaine Tablets and Alcohol
Liver toxicity is believed to be a rare side effect of taking Minocycline
(Divaine tablets). Alcohol has negative effects on the liver, so it is highly
recommended that patients not consume alcohol while being
prescribed Minocycline as this may exacerbate an already existing liver
problem.
Be aware that if you feel unwell with an infection or find Minocycline
makes you feel dizzy, or gives you a headache or upset stomach, then
this might be made worse by drinking alcohol. It's also possible that
drinking excessive amounts of alcohol with Minocycline (Divaine
tablets) could increase the risk of getting side effects on your liver.

Divaine Tablets Side Effects
The most commonly observed Divaine (Minocycline
Tablets) side effects with an incidence rate of 5% or
more are headache, fatigue, dizziness, and pruritus.
Side effects reported in clinical trials at a rate of 1% or
more are for Headache, Fatigue, Dizziness, Pruritus,
Malaise, Mood alteration, Somnolence, Urticaria,
Tinnitus, Arthralgia, Vertigo, Dry mouth and Myalgia.

Divaine Tablets Side Effects
Side effects that have been reported With Minocycline Hydrochloride use in a variety of
indications during postmarketing include:
Skin and hypersensitivity reactions: fixed drug eruptions, balanitis, erythema multiforme,
Stevens-Johnson syndrome, anaphylactoid purpura, photosensitivity, pigmentation of skin and
mucous membranes, hypersensitivity reactions, angioneurotic edema, anaphylaxis, DRESS
syndrome.
Autoimmune conditions: polyarthralgia, pericarditis, exacerbation of systemic lupus,
pulmonary infiltrates with eosinophilia, transient lupus-like syndrome.
Central nervous system: pseudotumor cerebri, bulging fontanels in infants, decreased hearing.
Endocrine: brown-black microscopic thyroid discoloration, abnormal thyroid function.
Oncology: thyroid cancer.
Oral: glossitis, dysphagia, tooth discoloration.
Gastrointestinal: enterocolitis, pancreatitis, hepatitis, liver failure.
Renal: reversible acute renal failure.
Hematology: hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia.
Preliminary studies suggest that use of minocycline may have deleterious effects on human
spermatogenesis.

Overdose
The adverse events more frequently observed in overdose are
dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. No specific antidote for Minocycline
tablets is known at present.
In case of overdosage, discontinue Divaine tablets immediately, treat
symptomatically and institute supportive measures. Minocycline is not
removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal
dialysis.

Divaine Tablets During Pregnancy
Minocycline Hydrochloride (Divaine Tablets) has been classified
by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category D.
Divaine should not be used during pregnancy. If the patient becomes
pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the
potential hazard to the fetus and stop treatment immediately.
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of Minocycline
Hydrochloride (Divaine Tablets) in pregnant women. Minocycline, like other
tetracycline-class drugs, crosses the placenta and may cause fetal harm
when administered to a pregnant woman.
Rare spontaneous reports of congenital anomalies including limb reduction
have been reported with Minocycline use in pregnancy in post-marketing
experience. Only limited information is available regarding these reports;
therefore, no conclusion on causal association can be established.

Divaine Tablets During Pregnancy
Results of studies conducted in animal prove that tetracyclines cross the
placenta, are found in foetal tissues and can have toxic effects on the
developing foetus (often related to retardation of skeletal development).
Evidence of embryotoxicity has also been noted in animals treated early
in pregnancy.
The use of drugs of the tetracycline class during tooth development (last
half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood up to the age of 12 years) can
cause permanent discolouration of the teeth (yellow to grey-brown).
Tetracyclines including Divaine (Minocycline Hydrochloride tablets) are
excreted in human milk. Due to the potential for serious adverse
reactions in nursing infants from the tetracyclines, a decision should be
made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into
account the importance of the medicine to the mother.

Divaine Tablets During Nursing
Minocycline (Divaine tablets) can cause fetal harm and pass into breast
milk. Minocycline may affect bone and tooth development in a fetus or
nursing baby.
Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are pregnant
or breast-feeding a baby. Children should not take this medication.
