This document discusses microservices architecture and monolithic architecture. It notes that eventual consistency with microservices means that during a partition, different processes may see different data states. Intermittent failures can also cause issues as any call in a microservices process can fail at any time. While microservices are good for very large complex systems, monolithic design should not be dismissed and may still be preferable for smaller teams or early products where independence of delivery is not as important. The best architecture depends on factors like team size, product stage, domain knowledge, and independence requirements.

About Microservices, Containers and their Underestimated Impact on Network Pe...
Microservices are used to build complex applications composed of small, independent and highly decoupled processes. Recently, microservices are often mentioned in one breath with container technologies like Docker. That is why operating system virtualization experiences a renaissance in cloud computing. These approaches shall provide horizontally scalable, easily deployable systems and a high-performance alternative to hypervisors. Nevertheless, performance impacts of containers on top of hypervisors are hardly investigated. Furthermore, microservice frameworks often come along with software defined networks. This contribution presents benchmark results to quantify the impacts of container, software defined networking and encryption on network performance. Even containers, although postulated to be lightweight, show a noteworthy impact to network performance. These impacts can be minimized on several system layers. Some design recommendations for cloud deployed systems following the microservice architecture pattern are derived.
Building an Open M2M community one step at a time
It is widely agreed that there will be devices in the range of billions communicating with each other by the end of this decade. From the alarm system in your house, to your power-meter being part of a smart grid, to the ATM around the corner, every object of your life will soon be connected to the Internet of Things, if not already.
This connected world is at the crossroads of various ecosystems that the Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group aims at bridging.
On one hand are the IT and telco industries, that already are connecting devices together by means of usually closed software platforms and communication protocols. These industries have an incredible experience at designing solutions tailored to their vertical businesses, but today's challenge is to break down the silos preventing the emergence of the true Internet of Things: every object should virtually be accessible from anywhere.
On the other hand, there are many providers of great end-user services that are waiting for platforms allowing them to create their own applications using these services, that they can distribute on their own markets and via social networks.
Lastly, the Open Hardware and hobbyists movements are a place where a lot of innovation happens: bleeding edge technologies, passionate developers that can, and will, make Internet of Things not only successful, but also fun.
If you want to learn what is cooking at Eclipse in terms of tools and frameworks for M2M development, how we get the aforementioned communities actively involved, and the business models that this Open M2M stack is enabling, then this talk is for you!
Transforming monolith systems to microservices
This presentation talks about the motivation of transforming monolithic systems to microservices system, and also describes some of the challenges in this process and how to overcome them.
Microservices - stress-free and without increased heart attack risk
This is a slide deck belonging to a talk in which I talk about the challenges with µservices in general and provide a few ideas how to avoid the worst pitfalls.
The talk starts with a short explanation why µservice are always hard (yes, the title of the presentation is sort of an oxymoron) and when and when not to choose µservices.
After that introduction I provide a few ideas which from my experience help to get around the worst problems and pitfalls with µservices. As the ideas are from very different topic areas I organized them according to the software production chain starting with design hints and ending with resilience hints (a pure production related topic).
As always the voice track is missing but I hope that also the slides in themselves will give you a few helpful hints.

The Eclipse M2M Industry Working Group (http://m2m.eclipse.org) is an open-source initiative delivering a set of building blocks for creating IoT solutions. A microservice is written quickly: Reasonable scope, a small REST interface, nice and easy and way lot cooler than those fat web applications we did before. But, is it really that easy? Well - no, not really! A single service is quite easy to manage, but therefrom the overall complexity does not go away. Instead of a few big web applications we now have lots of microservices - and to make sure that integration, operations and maintenance will not become a lottery game with increased heart-attack risk, it is crucial to consider a few things, that were not (so) important for traditional web applications. Should I use REST or would event driven be the better choice? How can I make sure the service collaboration works as desired? With GUI or better without GUI? How can I guarantee availability and scalability in production? How to deploy best? How I can I make sure that services are easily replaceable? How can I avoid service spaghetti? Those and many more questions will be answered in this session - to make sure the encounter with microservices will not become a health risk.

The Internet of Things (IoT) or Machine to Machine (M2M), is a technological field that will radically change the global network by enabling the communication of virtually every single object with each other. Studies state that more than 50 billions objects may be connected to the Internet by 2020. In a near future, everything from a light bulb to a power plant, from a pacemaker to an hospital, from a car to a road network will be part of the Internet.
While this revolution is already happening (your house or your car may be "connected" already!), there are still lots of barriers to its growth, especially since existing solutions are almost always proprietary, and cannot interoperate easily. There are several very active M2M initiatives at Eclipse aiming at lowering these barriers, all under the umbrella of the M2M Industry Working Group. Last year, projects Paho (communication protocols for M2M) and Koneki (tools for M2M developers, in particular a complete IDE for Lua development) were created, and in July 2012 project Mihini was proposed to establish Lua as a reference platform for building M2M and IoT solutions.
The purpose of this talk is to give you a clear understanding of the afore mentioned Eclipse projects, as well as to show you that real M2M solutions can already be developed thanks to them. We will briefly introduce the Lua programming language, explain why it is a good fit for embedded M2M development, and then demonstrate the development of an actual working solution making use of the Mihini framework, a Paho MQTT client, and the Koneki tooling. The use case will also leverages Open Hardware plaforms such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
