Who Is Willa Cather s Admiration In My Antonia
Willa Cather has a strong admiration for the character Antonia in My Antonia. The introduction of My
Antonia states that the narrator and Jim were to write down all they knew of her in order to maybe get
a picture of her. I believe this strong admiration is because of the characteristics that are shown by
Antonia throughout the story. She is a hardworking girl that belongs to a Bohemian family who has
started a farm in Nebraska. Not only is she hard working but throughout the story she shows
characteristics of being strong both inside and out. Also, it is very apparent that she wants to be
independent and make her own decisions. I think Willa Cather admires the character Antonia because
she can, in a way, reflect on her characteristics

Performance Management
Performance management is an ongoing, continuous process of communicating and clarifying job
responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations in order to ensure mutual understanding
between supervisor and employee. It is a philosophy which values and encourages employee s
development through a style of management which provides frequent feedback and fosters teamwork.
It emphasizes communication and focuses on adding value to the organization by promoting improved
job performance and encouraging skill development. Performance Management involves clarifying
the job duties, defining performance standards, and documenting, evaluating and discussing
performance with each employee.
Performance Management reminds us that being busy is not the same as producing results. It reminds
us that training, strong commitment and lots of hard works alone are not result. The major
contribution of performance management is its focus on achieving results useful products and services
for customers inside and outside the organization. Performance management redirects our efforts away
from being busy towards effectiveness.
Recently organizations have been faced with challenges like never before. Increasing competition
from business across the world has meant that all businesses must be much more careful about the
choice of strategies to remain competitive. Everyone in the

John Steinbeck Accomplishments
John Emst Steinbeck was bom on Febmary 27, 1902, in Salinas,
Califomia. The time and place of his birth are important because
Steinbeck matured as an artist in his early thirties and during the darkest days of the Depression, and
his most important fictions are set in his beloved Salinas Valley. In one sense, Steinbeck s location in
time and place may have made him a particularly American artist. Bom just after the closing of the
frontier, Steinbeck grew up with a fmstrated modem
America and witnessed the most notable failure of the American
Dream with the Great Depression. He was a writer who inherited the great tradition of the American
Renaissance of the nineteenth century and who was forced to reshape it in terms of the historical and

Like his first divorce, this one was bitter and expensive. In the same year, his mentor,
Ed Ricketts, was killed in a car accident. Steinbeck traveled extensively, devofing himself to film and
nonfiction projects. In 1950, he married Elaine Scott, establishing a supportive relationship that
allowed him to finish his epic Salinas Valley novel East of Eden.
Steinbeck tried again and again to write his way back to the artistic success of his earlier years,
notably in The Wayward Bus, but his commercial success kept getting in the way. East of Eden, his
major postwar novel, was an attempt at another Califomia epic to match the grandeur of The Grapes of
Wrath. Although the book was a blockbuster best seller, it was an artistic and critical failure. Steinbeck
himself seemed to recognize his own decline, and in his last years he virtually abandoned ficfion for
joumalism.
Of his last novels, only The Winter of Our Discontent transcends mere entertainment, and it does not
have the literary stmcture necessary to support its serious themes. Despite the popularity of Steinbeck
s nonfiction, such as Travels with Charley, despite awards such as the Nobel Prize and the Presidential
Medal of Freedom, and despite

The Digestive System Of Digestion Essay
Digestion is the breaking apart of foods into smaller and smaller units and absorbtion is the
movements of those small units from the gut into the bloodstream or lymphatic system for circulation.
(1) The digestive system is what keeps you going from day to day because without the digestive
system you wouldn t be able to consume anything. You also wouldn t be able to absorb the necessary
nutrients you need for your body to keep functioning correctly. The organs that play a role in the
digestive system is the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, appendix, rectum,
liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and the anal canal. The mouth is where it all starts. Before you even take a
bite of your food, the smell of the food is what triggers your salivary glands which include the parotid,
sublingual, and submandibular glands in your mouth making it start to water. Your saliva increases
when you taste the food. When you chew the food into smaller pieces the enzyme amylase breaks food
into small sugar molecules. To start fat digestion another enzyme is released at the base of the tongue
called lingual lipase. A bolus is easy to swallow and is formed when saliva and other fluids in the
mouth mixed with mucous. Bolus slides past the epiglottis and then goes through the esophagus and to
the stomach where it is then digested. The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx to the
stomach that is part of the upper gastrointestinal tract. (4) This organ carries the

Should The Past Be Judged
Should the Past be Judged?
We can learn a lot from consulting the past. We learn more about our world, more about our history,
and even more about ourselves. Spanish aphorist George Santayana once said: Those who cannot
remember the past are condemned to repeat it (qtd. in Moncur 1). In general terms, this famous
aphorism means that it is important for us to study and learn from history in order to avoid repeating
the same mistakes. However, the standards and values that we use today to judge the present are much
different than they were in the past. What may have seemed like the right thing to do one hundred
years ago might not be viewed the same way today. In her essay At the Buffalo Bill Museum, June
1988, Jane Tompkins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cody s Wild West shows weren t just used to preserve the buffalo species; they were used to depict his
actions as an Indian fighter. Buffalo Bill was a plainsman, but the place he might have held on the
picture plane of the West was severely compromised and ultimately lost to the theatrical pretentions of
the Wild West Show (Momaday 638). For Cody, these shows were just a transformation into an
imitation of himself. The great fascination and peril of Cody s life was the riddle of who he really was.
The thing that opposed him, and perhaps betrayed him, was above all else the mirage of his own
identity (Momaday 631). In this essence, it is important for us to judge the past. Despite his treatment
of the Indians, Cody is still an authentic American hero.
Buffalo Bill isn t the only figure in American history to be viewed in this controversial manner.
Consider the actions of Christopher Columbus after discovering America. In 1492, Columbus set out
on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to prove that the world was round. After spending
two months at sea, Columbus finally reached what he thought was India but was actually Central
America. Columbus is credited for being the first to generate European awareness of the American
continents in the Western Hemisphere. His voyages eventually led to the colonization of the Americas
and the development of a modern world. After Columbus, more and more explorers set out to the

Literary Analysis of Emily Dickinson s Poetry Essays
Literary Analysis of Emily Dickinson s Poetry
Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous authors in American History, and a good amount of that
can be attributed to her uniqueness in writing. In Emily Dickinson s poem Because I could not stop for
Death, she characterizes her overarching theme of Death differently than it is usually described
through the poetic devices of irony, imagery, symbolism, and word choice.
Emily Dickinson likes to use many different forms of poetic devices and Emily s use of irony in
poems is one of the reasons they stand out in American poetry. In her poem Because I could not stop
for Death, she refers to Death in a good way. Dickinson states in the poem that He kindly stopped for
me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(14, 18). During this poem, Dickinson wants us to simply see her version of a person s trip during
death. The imagery is supposed to lead us into seeing what the author is describing.
With poems often being short in length, symbolism helps the author expand on a theme by using very
little words. In ?Because i could not stop for Death,? Dickinson uses symbolism to give more
substance to the journey with ?Death?. Dickinson symbolizes the ride in general as being a ride past
her life to eternity. The setting sun is also a symbol for her dying life. As the sun sets and ends another
day, her life ends as ?Death? takes her toward eternity. Thomas H. Johnson interprets this by saying ?
the sun passed them, as it of course does all who are in the grave? (Johnson). In both cases, Dickinson
symbolizes the ?sun? as a way of ending things, connecting it to the character s ending life. Dickinson
also uses the third stanza as a symbol of how everything will go on normally while the character is
being lead to the afterlife. The children and grain are growing which represents new life or the future
(Melani). This symbol shows that ?Death? does not control everything, but can control on thing at a
time. Symbolism is a key to many poems, to help the reader think deeper into the poem itself.
In Emily Dickinson s poem, the most important poetic device is her unique word choice. All of the
other poetic devices discussed so far have a direct

In Western Silva there lay two powerful empires, forged by the tears of many men and several vicious
battles. Each empire had a strength all its own and are only separated by the argentum river. On the

Slowly Moving Towards Legalizing Marijuana Essay
For the past ninety years, marijuana has been an enemy to drug agencies, government officials, and
presidential administrations. Smoke Signals, a book about the oppressive and beneficial history of
marijuana, is written as an effective argument while highlighting the plant in many different social
settings.
Cannabis use can be traced back to the Neolithic Period (10,200 4500 BC). Since then, nearly every
culture continued to use marijuana for personal reasons, causing information to surge throughout the
world. Some cultivate marijuana for the stems and stalk that produce cordage and cloth, while others
eat the marijuana seeds for the essential fatty acids and protein. The first reference to medical

A Jamaican centered, long term marijuana use study concluded that no significant differences between
ganja smokers and nonsmokers were present with basic skills and responses. Different presidential
administrations rejected studies like these, that proved medical marijuana potential, to protect the
illusion that marijuana crippled America.
American culture exploited marijuana for nearly every use. People who found relief in marijuana
stood for their rights. Social gatherings like Hempfest promoted marijuana law reform when
thousands of people gathered and enjoyed themselves in the company of other marijuana users. In
retaliation, the iron fist of different drug czars, presidents, and the authorities ruled anyone who had
ties to marijuana. They enforced a zero tolerance policy in America while other countries approached
marijuana with a different strategy.
Instead of moving towards prohibition, countries like the Netherlands, Canada, and Israel, worked
towards decriminalization the policy that removes the marijuana smoker from the criminal justice
system. Many countries found consistent evidence that marijuana benefitted patients with terminal
illnesses or troubling

Frankenstein Depicted In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
In the letters at the beginning of the novel, it s stated that a Robert Walton, an explorer, is sailing in the
Arctic Ocean and eventually stumbles upon an injured Victor Frankenstein. In the letters, Walton is
retelling what Frankenstein had told him about his story. Frankenstein was at birth a Genevese,
belonging to distinguished family. As a child, he enjoyed learning things and he was quick to learn
new subjects which explains why he had a profound love for science. Later his mother, Caroline
Beaufort, adopts a girl named Elizabeth Lavenza who she gives to Frankenstein and takes his mother
words literally, believing that Elizabeth belonged to him. When Frankenstein was about to leave to
university, his mother and Elizabeth develop the scarlett fever, his mother dies while Elizabeth
recovers from the illness. Eventually he develops a desire to bring back the dead. He uses a mixture of
different science to achieve this twisted goal of his. He isolates himself from his friends and family to
get his experiment done and when he gets his wish, instead of caring and nurturing his creation, he
flees in fear and disgust, leaving the creature to fend for himself. After being nursed back to health by

The Importance Of Religion And Terrorism
Religion and Terrorism Terrorism is use of unlawful force against property or persons in aim to
intimidate or coerce the civilian population, the government and any relevant segment while seeking
for either social or political objectives (Awan and Blakemore, 2016). In 1980s, politics inspired
terrorism, but as 1990s approached, the dramatic increase in terrorism was enthused by religious
agendas. As a result there is, need to change focus from political instigated terrorism to a dominant
religious terrorism of the stereotypical terrorist organization. There is therefore a need for the law
enforcement communities and intelligence groups to monitor new religious and extremist groups and
movements, especially when it comes to the United States Domestic terrorism threat(Juergensmeyer,
2017). For instance, terrorists with links to a radical Muslim extremist group orchestrated the dreadful
attack on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. This increase in religious terrorism is mainly due to
the rise in form of militant Islamic Shiite fundamentalism. According to Bruce Hoffman a Rand
researcher, religious political terrorists and secular political terrorists differ in that; the former
considers violence as a religious call that is a direct response some theological imperative. Among
those groups, terrorism is a full time calling and that is the reason they take credit for their actsand
influence others with rules that views violence as the only way of settling disputes. On the

What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in the
arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his
understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road saying,
[McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature as a living
master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale are true
throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the book,
McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to emphasize the
theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness.
Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s gripping
and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the death of his
father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go back into the
woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand (McCarthy 281). With
the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are brought into question. As
the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make a decision that could quite
possibly affect the rest of his life. The tension dissipates when it is revealed that the man is not a
threat, but a

Persuasive White House
White is one of those shades that we often avoid at all costs in a kid s bedroom doors since it stains
very easily and takes a lot of work to keep clean and looking great. In most children s bedrooms, the
only place that you will see white is on the ceiling, with most parents taking the stand of banishing
white doors from a kid s bedroom. Here are just a few alternatives that make a great replacement for
white bedroom doors in your child s room: Natural wood finishes are high, but faux wood materials
that are more durable are a better choice. Your priority in a kid s bedroom doors is durability.
Otherwise, you will be replacing the door far more often than you would like. Natural woods are easy

For instance, crayons, food, gum, dirt, mud, pencils, and markers leave marks that are almost
impossible to get rid of totally and to even make a dent in the stain you have to buy special products.
Pen, marker, and gum rarely come off entirely, leaving some trace of the original stain. Some color
options will not have this problem; such as black and some wood finish shades. Consider this
scenario: Your six year old son comes running in the house after an afternoon playing outside. His feet
and hands are covered in mud, grass, and grime, and the first place he is heading is not likely to be the
bathroom if he can sneak past Mom. Browns and black hide more than just stains on your child s
bedroom doors. We mostly consider the entry door for the bedroom, but this also applies to closet
doors and bathroom doors for some kids rooms. Many shades of brown and black hide the stains we
have already gone over, but they also mask scuff marks, small scratches, and minor dings. White doors
show everything, including the smallest ding, nick, mark, scratch, or scrape. As you make plans to do
your spring cleaning or just think about touching up the details in the house, those white doors will

Cuban Relations During The Cuban Revolution
US Cuban relations have not been the friendliest since the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Only recently
during President Barack Obama s second term in office did the US really try to resolve the Cuban
issue and only then did it become such a priority. US Cuban relations have always been a mixed bag
of plenty of good and evil deeds. The US needs all the allies it can get and it needs to refocus in Latin
America. Cuba is no real challenge to American power but Cuba represents a sore spot for American
foreign policy. The US must work as one with Cuba in order to normalize relations with Cuba and
bring Cubans into the 21st century. There are plenty of Cuban Americans who want desperately to see
family and friends on the island and the US must work together with Cuba to achieve these goals.
Cuba has been a hot topic of debate ever since the Cuban Revolution and it continues to be one which
is why there is no better time to study Cuba. Cuba has a long cultural history which makes it
interesting to study and now that the US is finally working with the Cuban government on
normalizing relations, more scholars will be traveling to Cuba. More information about Cuba and the
Cuban culture will become available as the US moves to being better neighbors. This is important for
researchers and others to gain new insights on Cuba which have not been available for the past fifty to
sixty years. The renewed Cuban American relations and the so called, Cuban Thaw , is the right

Role of Nature and Nurture in Language Development
How do both nature and nurture interact in the promotion of language development in young children?
The debate between many researchers is the argument of whether nature or nurture play a more
important role in development. In this essay I will be looking into both aspects of nature and nurture
focusing specifically on their influence towards language development in children. A main
controversial question I will be looking into is the question of whether are we born already equipped
with mechanisms which help us to learn language, or is language learned throughout a child s
environment by, for example, imitation and repetition? Studies done by some opposing researchers
claim to show that nature and nurture promote language development ... Show more content on

Although Jim did learn speech it became noticeably odd to others around him as he had developed his
own, unique grammatical characteristics and his poor articulation meant he didn t acquire normal
language skills (Sachs et al 1981). Bruner suggests that this was due to lack of social interaction in his
learning of speech, which again highlights the importance of nurture in promoting a child s language
development.
However, it can be argued with (Bruner 1964) that social interaction doesn t explain all the
complexities of language acquisition. Almost every day the language we hear is often incorrect, poorly
defined, incomplete and full of hesitations, mispronunciations and other errors, and yet despite this we
still learn to talk following the correct grammatical rules. Again this indicates the idea of Chomsky s
(1968) LAD model that children are born hard wired with the innate knowledge of linguistic rules and
so these rules help the baby make estimations and presumptions about the language it is hearing. From
these estimations and presumption the child can work out grammatical sets of rules and when more
language is exposed to them, the more their language develops. Even within Chomsky s (1968) LAD
theory, undoubtedly he believed the role and promotion of the nature aspect is the core foundation on
which language can develop. But his theory also requires the role of nurture

Literary Analysis over One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Essay
LITERARY ANALYSIS One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey during a
time in our society when pressures of our modern world seemed at their greatest. Many people were,
at this time, deemed by society s standards to be insane and institutionalized. One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest is set in a ward of a mental institution. The major conflict in the novel is that of power.
Power is a recurring and overwhelming theme throughout the novel. Kesey shows the power of
women who are associated with the patients, the power Nurse Ratched has, and also the power
McMurphy fights to win. By default, he also shows how little power the patients have. When

Laughter makes the patients feel good, and, specifically, Bromden feels good and begins to remember
other things that made him feel good (Tanner 4). McMurphy s power in laughter is intensified by
Nurse Ratched s lack of laughter. McMurphy s laughter and humor are genuine while Nurse Ratched s
humor is forced and smiles are chiseled like in plastic (Wallace 3, 5). Power enables McMurphy to
make changes on the ward and to survive in the institution. His sanity compared to the other patients,
his manipulations, and his ability to laugh give him the power. He, in turn, gives patients a sense of
power by teaching them to laugh at themselves, Nurse Ratched, and the world (Magill 1533). Second
in a discussion of power are the women associated with the patients. The supervisor at the hospital is
associated with the patients by controlling who is employed to take care of the patients. Nurse Ratched
and the supervisor served in the Army together as nurses. They are still very close and have a good
relationship. Because of this relationship, Nurse Ratched s employment is secured and others won t

Inhumanity In Tuesdays With Morrie Night
There is only one way in which one can endure man s inhumanity to man and that is to try, in one s
own life, to exemplify man s humanity to man, a quote by Alan Paton, really puts to words the
attitudes that Morrie from Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, and Elie from Night by Elie Wiesel
adopted in these novels. Morrie has to deal with the inhumanity of contracting a terminal disease that
he can not do anything about. Elie faces the inhumanity of the Nazi s advance through Europe in their

uses it to teach others. Through all the death that Elie has to go through, he still keeps hope that they
will be rescued at their next place. When Morrie hears his disease referenced as horrible, he says
otherwise and talks of how he is lucky to have all this time to say goodbye (Albom 57). Morrie shows
here how he sees the true humanity through the sorrow and is happy for every moment he is given. He
even continues to use it as a teaching topic to show others how they should live their lives. People s
morale was not so bad: we were beginning to get used to the situation. There were those who even
voiced optimism (Weisel 20). Even through all that Elie and the Jewish people faced, they always
maintained their hope. While many were scared, there was always optimism that things would be okay
and back to normal eventually. This optimism shows the humanity of the Jewish people and Elie, even
though they faced true evil and inhumanity. The happiness of Morrie and the optimism of Elie and his
people, show that even in dark times people will maintain their

Standard And Oil Argumentative Essay
One instance, from real life, of the US government acting to promote competition and break up
monopolies occurred in 1911 when the United States Supreme Court ruled that Standard and Oil was
an illegal monopoly. Standard and Oil Co Inc. was an American oil company established in 1870 by
John D. Rockefeller as a corporation in Ohio which by early 1880 controlled some 90 percent of US
refineries and oil pipelines and dominated the oil products market through horizontal integration and
later through vertical integration. Standard and Oil gained a monopoly in the oil industry by buying
rival refineries and forming several companies for distributing and marketing its products around the
globe. In 1882, these various companies were combined into the Standard Oil Trust and It became the
largest oil refinery monopoly in the world. Rockefeller became the richest man in the world which
consequently made him a target of critics and politicians. These powerful politicians accused him of
under cutting and destroying his competitors by engaging in unethical practices, such as price fixing
and colluding with railroads to eliminate his competition and to ultimately gain a monopoly in the
industry. Other accusations by critics and politicians included: getting rich on rebates from railroads,

Introduction
Brand management is basically a plan to uplift and to promote the respected brand in the market. It is
necessary to build a good brand among several competitors in the market because it leads to
development of a relationship with the target market. Target market is a very essential as well as
crucial aspect for a company as it decides the overall growth of the company. Brand management is a
broad concept and it has its own elements that actually give a meaning to it. Without these elements, a

The Effects Of Air Pollution On The Environment
The typical public, particularly sick people with upper or inferior respiratory symptoms know that
severe respiratory impacts can take place due to air pollution based on the information from the media.
It is vital for the relevant specialists to possess present information of the probable health impacts as
well as the manner in which they might influence their clients in order to instruct them adequately. In
particular, the specialists in the field should meticulously know that both gaseous as well as particulate
matter might potentially worsen the existing pathophysiology of the airway. This paper also provides
some overview of the findings for the research conducted. Therefore, remedial measures ought to be
in place to mitigate the effects of air pollution.
Introduction
Clean air is important to all living things especially the animals as well as human beings for the
purpose of healthy coexistence. At present, many nations appear to strive towards ensuring that the air
is clean. However, because of continuous and necessary urban development, the atmosphere
progressively experiences pollution. Nations as well as the entire world will be able to reduce
pollution levels if not eliminated to reduce the burden of disease such as stroke, heart disease, lung
cancer, chronic and acute respiratory sicknesses including asthma if they are aware and educated about
the causes and the health effects of air pollution.

How Does Salt Affect The Height Of Ice Cream
Title: What is the effect of salt content on the height of ice cream?
Purpose
The purpose of the experiment was to see if more salt content resulted in higher ice cream formations.
Background Information
To make ice cream you need milk, half and half, sugar and vanilla. All of these products make ice
cream, but they must be cooled down. That is where salt comes in. Just like when salt is spread on
roads in cold weather to prevent freezing roads, salt in ice cream allows the freezing point to decrease.
Since ice cream isn t just water, salt is needed to make the ice creams temperature below 32 degrees
Fahrenheit. The salt makes the mixture of ice cream colder than with just ice. By mixing the ice and
salt, the freezing point gets lowered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the amount of salt (Tbsp.) increased, so did the height of Ice cream. When two Tbsp. of salt were
used, the data resulted in 4.8 cm, 3.1 cm, and 3.4 cm. When the control (6 Tbsp.) were used, the height
resulted in 7.5 cm, 8.4 cm, and 5.9 cm. Ten Tbsp. resulted in 5.2 cm, 11.4 cm, and 9.8 cm. As one can
see, increasing the amount of salt, showed an increase in the height of Ice cream.
Conclusion
The purpose of the experiment was to see if more salt content resulted in higher ice cream formations.
The question the lab asked was What variable needs to be changed to produce greater ice cream
height? The hypothesis was If the salt content increases, then the ice cream formation will yield taller
formations.
The hypothesis was supported. As the salt content went from 2 Tbsp., 6 Tbsp., and 10 Tbsp. The
average went up from 3.6 cm per 2 Tbsp. to 7.2 cm per 6 Tbsp. to 8.8 cm per 10 Tbsp. The principle
guiding the outcome, was the salt, lowering the freezing point.

Nt1310 Unit 3 Study
My three Study weaknesses Cell phone Highlighting paragraphs Photographic memory The three
study weaknesses that I have are turning off my cell phone during studying, highlighting entire
paragraphs when taking notes, and a photographic memory. While studying for an assignment or quiz
in high school, I struggled with having my cell phone on and near me. At any vibration, I would have
to stop studying and pick up the phone to make sure I was not missing an important text, email, or
phone call. Because of this distraction it caused me to reread sentences over and over, which leads to
my second weakness as adult highlighting entire paragraphs instead of identifying the key points. This
negative habit began while in a college English course.

Hundred Year s War Research Paper
Research Paper Rough Draft
One of the world s most important wars happened in medieval time, known as the Hundred Year s war.
The Hundred Year s war was a war between England and France, which started as a conflict between
kings. The war also brought many changes to fighting tactics, religion, and government. The Hundred
Year s war, which started off as a conflict to become king, had major turning points and battles which
helped bring change to the world. The Hundred Year s war was caused by a conflict that started with
king Charles IV and the fight to become king. King Charles IV had no heir to the throne as a result of
having no male children. King Edward III of England believed he should be king, while the French
believed that King Charles IV s cousin Philip IV should be king. Edward stated that he was the closest
heir, due to the fact his mother is the sister of King Charles IV. The French said because King Edward
III was connected through a female, he had no right to be king. The quote from Edward ... Show more

that, but the war helped abolish feudalism, a government system of allowing men to purchase land in

Junot Diaz s Truly Does Tell The Brief Story Of The...
Junot Diaz s novel truly does tell the brief story of the wondrous life of Oscar de Léon, our Dominican
American protagonist, better known as Oscar Wao. Weighing in at 245 pounds, our hopeless romantic
loves comic books, writes science fiction in all of his spare time, and, as described by our
homodiegetic narrator Yunior, is a loser with a capital L (Diaz 17). While the title might allude that
this is a story solely about Oscar, Diaz also delves deep into the lives of those closest to him. This
narrative tells the epic journey of Oscar, as well as his family members, and how their experiences in
the United States and Dominican Republic come together full circle at the end of The Brief Wondrous
Life of Oscar Wao, with the help of some postmodern techniques. As an immigrant himself, Diaz is
able to use his journey to bring attention to the cultural stereotypes of his characters, but unlike many
bildungsroman writings, our character s coming of age story does not provide him with enough
spiritual learnings to give him the quintessential happy ending. The overall growth of Oscar only
reveals the flaws in his culture, a fatal flaw in his case. Because Oscar does not comply with the
Dominican standards, he faces heavy repercussions in his life. As a story told in a fragmented, non
linear form, Yunior is able to recall anecdotes from different time periods, whether of Oscar, his
mother Beli, or his sister Lola. Diaz gives his narrator the ability to tell a historical account of

Summary Of The Novel Inside Out And Back Again
Inside out and Back again In the novel Inside Out and Back Again written by Thanhha Lai, it s
explained how a young girl by the name of Ha and her family struggles when fleeing their homes due
to the war. It describes all the new things she has to learn and the struggles she faces during this time.
When they were forced to leave their country they had to adapt to many things such as new culture, a
new language and different new kinds of food. When they find a new home they have to adapt to their

External, Internal, and Construct Validity Essay
Validity pertains to both the methods and the design of a research study and indicates the degree with
which correct inferences can be made from the results of a research study (Indiana University Of
Pennsylvania, 2010). According to Trochim and Donnelly, there are four types of validity including
conclusion, internal, construct, and external (2008). In this assignment, three of these types will be
discussed. Internal validity is the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure. External
validity on the other hand, is the extent to which the results of a research study can be generalized to
other groups, other times, and other settings. Construct validity demonstrates an association between
results and the prediction of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instrumentation is concerned a lack of consistency in the measuring instrument that could account for
invalid results of a research study. This threat is most likely to occur when two different forms are
used for the pre and post tests or if the instrument is constructed poorly. (Creswell, 2009).
Mortality can occur if research participants drop out of the study before completion. This problem is
more likely to occur if participants are volunteers or if the sample group is too small (Creswell, 2009).
Statistical regression is the tendency of participants who score high on a pretest to score lower (or
closer to the mean) on the posttest and consequently, participants who score low on a pretest tend to
score higher on the posttest. This regression may significantly influence the distribution of scores.
Finally, differential selection can occur if already formed groups are used in a study as the groups may
have had existing differences from the beginning. For example, the subjects in each group may have
extreme age differences or educational backgrounds. As a result, any differences found at the posttest
may be due to these differential selection differences rather than being due to the independent
variable. External validity is the degree to which the results of a research study can be generalized to
and across other populations, settings, times and tasks. The threats to external validity compromise a

Examples Of Archetypes In Avatar
Avatar Archetypes Archetypes, what are they? Archetypes are recurrent symbols or motifs in
literature, art, or mythology. In the 2009 movie, Avatar, directed by James Cameron, several different
archetypes can be found that help move the plot along. Avatar begins with a man named Jake Sully,
who takes over his deceased brother s science mission on a faraway planet known as Pandora. On
Pandora, Jake is told to gain the natives , or the Na vi, trust in order to attempt to relocate the tribe.
This is necessary because the military wanted to collect a rare, valuable, mineral that lay beneath the

characters seen in the movie. In order to gain their confidence, Jake was put into an avatar body which

is well regulated. Security should be tightened on public transportation to ensure safe travel. It will be
cheaper and better means of commuting.
Third solution is public awareness which is very important to solve the problem of traffic congestion.

Trotsky and Stalin Essay
Trotsky and Stalin
I think that without Trotsky s contribution to the revolution it wouldn t of been a success I think this
because Trotsky was put in charge of organising the revolution by Lenin and this might show that
Lenin believed that Trotsky could do great things and this also means Lenin must of trust Trotsky as
he picked him very carefully. I also think as this was a vital job Lenin must of thought that Trotsky
was the best man for the job. Trotsky also had organised the Bolsheviks in Petrograd. He did this
because it was the capital city and it was very important to take control of the strongest part first this
showed Lenin that Trotsky was very clever.

I think the reason that Stalin and not Trotsky emerged as Lenin s successor because Stalin was a
strong Bolshevik believer from the beginning unlike Trotsky who was a bit of a glory supporter and
only came onto the Bolsheviks side when he knew that there was going to be a revolution happening
in 1917 that he could be a part of. I think that if Stalin didn t know that a revolution could take place
then he would of stayed a Menshevik supporter. Stalin also thought that if they started the revolution
in one country (Russia) then they could get power in that country and then the army would have to
join the Bolsheviks making it bigger to take over one country one by one. Whereas Trotsky believed
that they should take over a few countries at once this was a very silly idea as they would not be able
to pull it off as they were not quite big enough to do this and Lenin saw this.
Stalin was a very hard worker from the beginning to the finish and he was a very healthy man around
the time that Lenin died whereas Trotsky was a sick man and he also still had that glory supporter
nametag. Stalin was a very sneaky person he knew what he needed to do and he did well and truly

Comparing Descartes And Skepticism
This essay will analyse the relation between Descartes ad scepticism and I will argue that he is not a
philosophical sceptic. Firstly, philosophical scepticism is questioning whether any knowledge can be
known with certainty. Descartes was doubtlessly sceptical of whether the things he knew were certain
or not, he wants to find a foundation of knowledge that is so certain that it can dismiss the doubts of
the strongest scepticism. He believes that we acquire most our knowledge through our sense
perception, however, he argues that our senses are not error proof and therefore he doubts his entire
foundation of knowledge. He further proves his argument by saying that when we are dreaming we are
not aware that this is not our reality so what is there to stop us from thinking that the experiences we
re having now are not reliable. Furthermore, he gives the example of things we know through intellect
such as Arithmetic and Geometry, and he poses this argument by ... Show more content on

goodness He did allow him to be deceived by this evil genius; coming to the conclusion with this that
he doubts having a body or any senses yet acknledging that he falsely believes he does because of this
evil genius. This is how he ends he first meditation; with lack of certainty where the knowledge that is
acquired by senses are doubted through his dream argument while knowledge acquired through

Blood is a bodily fluid that runs through the veins, arteries and capillaries to help the cardiovascular
system perform its job (National Geographic, Heart, 1996). On average, adults have about 5 litres of
blood. Blood is the stream in the human body that takes part in the transportation of oxygen and
nutrients, and filtering out waste products (The American Society of Hematology, Blood Basics,

blood loss, fighting of infection through cells and antibodies, and the regulation of body temperature

Initially, we crossed a grassy meadow, and then navigated onto steep rugged terrain. Traveling at a
slow, steady pace, the sound of creaking saddles and rustling leaves from the crisp breeze was the only
thing you could hear for miles. As we ventured across several clear rushing streams, my horse decided
to abruptly stop for a quick drink. The hearty green foliage was beautiful as mountain laurel and flame
azalea scattered the old dirt trail while the sun peeked through the trees casting shadows. The trail
weaved up the mountain and the higher we climbed the narrower the trail became; therefore, looking
down was quite a frightening experience. After an hour of riding Joe, our guide, took the group to an

The Partition Of Indi India
Under the British Empire, India had remained fairly peaceful up until the 1940s. Its two major
religious groups, the Hindus and the Muslims, began lashing out at each other and their beliefs
causing strife all throughout India. There is a long history of violence between the two, so it was only
a matter of time before India split apart. The Partition of India was a decree written mostly by the All
India Muslim League that created the separate nation of Pakistan. The Indian state of East Punjab was
created in 1947 for the Hindus, when the Partition of India split the former British province of Punjab
between India and Pakistan (Hasan 35). The Muslim exodus from India, as well as the Hindu influx in
to India and East Punjab is still one of the most important events in India s history. This was not
completely unexpected, however. The Muslim and Hindu/Sikh populations found all throughout India
were at odds often. They were in constant turmoil over religious beliefs and living spaces, so the
Indian government had to figure out a way to resolve the conflict before India broke out into a civil
war. Strong efforts were made to try and unify Hindus and Muslims in India, but because of their
inability to cooperate, their strong beliefs, and the ongoing violence between each other, the separate
nation of Pakistan had to be created to establish peace. Due to the lack of cooperation from both the
Hindus and Muslims with the Indian government, a separate country had to

Since everyone is from completely different backgrounds, there is no way to figure out all the reasons
for why they do it. According to Katherine S. Newman, there are five things that all school shooters
have in common. At some point in their life, they were seen as different in some way, shape, or form.
All shooters also suffer from some sort of depression. Because of the depression, they look to be
problem solvers. They want to be known and get the glamour and street credit. They crave the power,
status, and history. They feel as if the glorious feeling of death will cure the quiet, dark, and alone side
that they have. The shooter also broadcasts their intentions and the attacks are never spontaneous. By
giving little hints, they try to gain friends and keep the ones they have safe. They all want to have
social status or revenge on a group that does not want them. (Newman). Although these reasons all
make sense, it is such a broad spectrum of ideas and characteristics. There is no way of knowing the
motive for a persons actions, especially if it is not being looked for or talked about. It is important to
be aware of these characteristics because it is one of the first steps in preventing these horrible events

Std Essay
Anyone who is sexually active can acquire an STD. However, the CDC states that while sexually
transmitted diseases affect individuals of all ages, STDs take a particularly heavy toll on young
people. CDC estimates that youth ages 15 24 make up just over one quarter of the sexually active
population, but account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted infections that occur in the
United States each year (CDC, 2017). STDs are an apparent problem in the United States and a
growing problem. Factors Related to the High Rate of STDS in the Bronx In general, there are a
variety of factors related to sexually transmitted diseases. Three factors related to the high rate of
STDs in the Bronx specifically include education ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While lack of education and economic barriers are two large factors related to the problem, another
crucial factor related to the high rate of STDs in the Bronx is age. For several reasons, adolescents are
at a higher risk for developing sexually transmitted diseases and statistically are the population with
the highest rate of STDs in the United States. The CDC states The burden of sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) among people aged 15 24 years accounts for nearly half of all STDs reported in the
U.S (CDC, 2015). Adolescents are a vulnerable population as they are undergoing so many changes
and this can make them more susceptible to partaking in risky sexual behavior. In the Bronx,
adolescents make up the largest population at 25.3% of the total population (U.S. Census Bureau,
2016). The high rate of STDs in adolescents and the large population of adolescents in the Bronx
correlates with the high rate of STDs in the Bronx. The issue of an education barrier can have a
detrimental effect on a population when it comes to healthcare, especially sexual healthcare because it
is not something people tend to discuss openly. It is important that people receive some sort of sexual
education so that they can keep themselves and others safe and healthy. Without this education, people
will not have the proper knowledge base on which to make the right decisions when it comes to their
sexual health and well being. It is

Is Belgium A Nation Of The International Market Through...
Belgium becomes a nation that creates a foothold in the international market through colonization in
Congo. Even though the exploitation was ramped throughout all the colonies, Congo might have been
the most extreme case of exploitation. Through the exploitation of the Congo lands, and the
government deeming most of the rain forest uninhabitable those lands were turned over to the
Belgium government and the resources were exhausted in that area. As the rubber vines would dry up
and die the expectation output from the Belgium government remained the same. In fact it was well
documented that government officials gave the green light to allow harsh punishments to be
administered on to the villagers if they were short on the amount of rubber that was produced. Soldiers
killed gathers or sometimes their families as punishment for not meeting their quotes (Gilbert and
Reynolds 279). The brutality of the soldiers methods were barbaric, to show that [the soldiers] had not
stolen or wasted the ammunition [the soldiers] were expected to bring back the hands of their victims
(Gilbert and Reynolds 279). With the diminishing supply of rubber in the Congo the harsher the
punishment was being distributed to the African people in the Congo, and King Leopold s Free State
was losing money.
As the demand rose and the supply was diminishing many of the villages fled into the forest (Gilbert
and Reynolds 279) while others would rebel against the Belgium government, and hostilities

Owls Research Paper
Owls are almost freakishly flexible. Owls necks can swivel up to 270 degrees without tearing tendons
or rupturing a blood vessel (8). Scientists from John Hopkins University School of Medicine have
information to explain how owls are able to perform the feat that has endlessly confused birders.
People and most animals can move their eyes to see their surroundings, owls have fixed eyes, which
means that they are immovable (8). Because of this, owls need to move their necks in order to be able
to see anything. Owls bodies are more flexible than humans, because unlike humans, who have two
socket pivots, owls only have one. This allows them to twist more freely (8). According to Eric
Forsman, a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forest Service, birds ... Show more content on

These birds can fly right above their prey s noses without being spotted, simply because of their
wings. Their silentness is due to their unique wings. In other birds, when air flows over their wings, it
creates a gushing noise as large areas of air turbulence build up (4). Unlike the other avian creatures,
the owl has a way of silencing this gush of air. At the owl s wing edge, there are small bows and hooks
that split up rushing air into miniature turbulences (4). These miniature turbulences flow down the
wing toward the trailing edge (4). The trailing edge is attached to special, pliable trimming feathers.
These feathers split the air even farther as it rolls off the trailing edge, making the flight of the bird
almost noiseless. However, if there s the tiniest bit of noise left, it gets absorbed into the down, or
short and soft, feathers. Even though the owl is equipped with numerous noise cancelling flight tools,
it is still complicated for them to make a catch because their wing has to be at the perfect angle when
the bird dives for its prey in order for the special silent feathers to work. However, when used
correctly, all of these feathers combined reduce noise so efficiently that even humans can t hear flying

The Controversy Of Evaluating Letter Grades
There has been a lot of debate about the way schools should be evaluating their students. Some say
that letter grades measure different levels of performance in school subjects and that letter grades also
motivate most students to do well. Others argue that the letter grade system is affecting the students
learning progress and their engagement; therefore, affecting those students in a negative way. There
are more appropriate ways to evaluate young students than to grade them. Trials have been done in
many schools throughout Canada where students are being assessed through summaries. These
summaries vary from letter grades since they provide information on the specific areas of struggle the
student may be facing and the opportunity for discussion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many
factors. It is important for students to learn to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for
overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a student that is
receiving bad grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get
better grades, and the student may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On
the other hand, a student who is receiving good grades may feel stress due to the pressure of
maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer s judgement and parent s expectations. Sources of
stress in schools include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self
Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress results in emotional, behavioral, or
psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the
student may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don t respect them, and their self esteem
will be impacted because of poor grades. This can result in behaviour and emotional issues which
further the student s insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or
percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the
resulting behaviour due to stress can be misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware.
Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can explain how they are
feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another
manifestation of stress in students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge
responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers to keep their jobs and for
schools to

`` My Favorite Chaperone `` By Jean Davies Okimoto
Ms.Brady Have you ever questioned how immigrants feel about America? Do you ever wonder how
much effort and time it takes to get here? Immigrants play a major role in the U.S. They come here for
various reasons as far as starting an enterprising business, an ideal marriage, or pursue their education
career. They come across challenges when they come here. In class, we ve read the books, My
Favorite Chaperone by the author Jean Davies Okimoto, Bonne Année by Jean Pierre Benoit, and A
Place to Call Home by Scott Bittle and Jonathan Rochkind. These passages discuss stories and
experiences upon what immigrants face and having a hard time adapting to is language, culture, and
employment. Language is one of 3 foremost obstacles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kreyòl, the language of my birthplace, is a mystery. this example shows that he wants to inform the
reader that he is a true American, not a Haitian and that he only and will speak English. Overall all of
these stories conclude that language is a big challenge immigrants face because they have to deal with
a form of communication. In the U.S immigrants struggle with adapting to English. Another important
topic immigrants struggle with is adapting to through culture. Maya in (MFC) struggles with this
because when she wants to fit in like an American such as, hanging with boys, not having many
responsibilities, and doing many activities she gets in trouble. Kazakhstani ways are strict, she is not
allowed to step out of the zone and when she does she gets a consequence when her dad sees her being
used as a weight lift for boys. In line 609 616 the text says, They don t know about things here, only
their own ways. They are like stone.....perhaps because we huddled together like a tiny Kazakh island
in the middle of the great American sea. This quote emphasizes that Maya wants to engage the reader
to know that her parents don t understand her when she s trying to break out of her shell because she
in an environment where she s the outlier when everybody else is alike. In the passage A Place to Call
Home. lines 68 69 says, More than three quarters (77 percent) say that it takes fewer than five years to

The Pantheon in Rome and the Candi Prambanan in Indonesia
Around the world people have been known to dedicate themselves and their families to a certain type
of religion or God. Practicing religion has been a major part of peoples daily rituals for centuries.
Believing in a higher power than ones own takes full dedication to that certain religion or God(s). In
order to give respect and be able to apply action into these beliefs it has became a tradition around the
world to build a place of worship. These places of worship are referred to differently across the world
depending on location and the religion being practiced. More specifically the Temple is a building that
is devoted for worshiping but also is known to house a multitude of religions depending on its
location. For example, the Romans have been known to house their Gods in Temples usually with a
multitude of columns to incase a statue of a God or Gods. Similarly, the people of Indonesia have been
building decorative Candi (Indonesian word for Temple) to praise and worship their Gods.4 For
instance, the Romans constructed The Pantheon, dedicated to the Gods of Ancient Rome compared to
Candi Prambanan built by the Indonesians in order to worship the concept of Trimurti. 3 The link
between these two cultures can be seen in the way that both Romans and Indonesians worship their
Gods in Temples with the use of separate sacred rooms and what these Temples represent for their
culture, but are able to be separated by their choice of architectural form, style and use of

Essay on Technology in the film Tron
Technology in the film Tron
Introduction
The purpose of my project is to discover how technology is represented within the film Tron. To
answer this research question, I viewed and analyzed the movie and incorporated information from the
text and various websites. While studying this film, I took into consideration factors such as images
and language used, how technology is related to society, and what symbols the creator used to convey
certain qualities of technology. In this research paper, I will begin by explaining the significance of
this project and my areas of research. I will then relay the focus of my investigation, the methods I
employed to gain my research, analyze the film, and discuss the implications of my analysis. ... Show

This description led me to believe that the outlook of technology at the time, when the Internet was
just being introduced to the public, was fear. People feared the unknown power of the new technology
of computers. Tron is a story of man battling his own creations, which represents technology as a
powerful force with destructive capabilities.
I am interested in this project because I have always liked science fiction/fantasy movies. I like to
think about the possibilities that technology holds for our future. I am also interested in how
technology influences our culture. I was in high school when this movie came out and had limited
access to computers at that time. I wasn t concerned with the impact of new computer technology
then, but remember hearing people say that machines would someday run the world. For example, I
worked for a grocery store in the 1980s and remember other employees worrying that new machines
were being developed that would replace the cashiers, and we would all be out of a job. I think this
movie would probably have a bigger impact now that computers are such a large part of our everyday
lives. Artificial intelligence is still a popular theme for science fiction movies, so people must like to
consider it a possibility. I ve read that there is a possible sequel to the movie

Femme Fatale

Mr. Halter
Composition I
06 October 2015
Femme Fatale Pink lips. Long nails. Extravagant jewelry. Flirty dresses. High heels. These are some
of the typical things your average femme lesbian prides herself on. These are some of the things I
pride myself on. My appearance constitutes a large part of my identity and self image. I am your
standard girl next door, except, I am not waiting on that handsome athletic jock to hit on me, I m
waiting on the other girl next door to come swoop me off my feet and ride into the sunset with. As
lesbians, we assume we have a certain amount of gaydar ingrained within us, like it s a prerogative.
We think that we have the capability to pinpoint any woman in a crowd and say Yes! She s one of us.
But where does this presumed gaydar come from? Is it a feeling we get, a judgment of mannerisms,
something we see in ourselves reflected in others, or is it simply what people wear? Do short hair,
plaid shirts, Jordan s and ties delineate what we perceive a lesbian to be? Gaydar is probably a
conglomeration of all these attributes, but we can t deny that the most conventional and simplest way
to ascertain someone s sexual orientation is from what they re wearing. This process is highly
inaccurate. Clothes are just a way to categorize us into subcultures. Indeed, we can all recount that one
lesbian that was so butch, she could be spotted from a mile away, and we

Comparing Ancient Egypt And Sumer
Arguably, two very impressive civilizations, Egypt and Sumer, took shape around the same time. This
proximity provided them with remarkable similarities, yet a copious amount of differences still grew
between the two areas. Largely due to their access to resources and environment, the communities
grew in very different manners, which led to differences in political development, as well as their
leaders, which in turn affected their overall success. In regards to Sumer, it flourished in the area of
Mesopotamia, or as the Greeks called it, the Land between Rivers (Cole, et al 7). Specifically, these
rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates. Despite being surrounded by waterways, Sumer existed in an
extremely arid climate, which left the soil sandy and summer weather unbearably hot. The rivers
presented a series of problems. Not only were the Tigris and Euphrates noted for their violence and
unpredictably , but also both were prone to flooding (Cole, et al 7). Despite these adversities, Sumer
still managed to grow into the first urban society (Cole, et al 7). Residents in this area quickly learned
simply irrigation tactics, overtime these channels became more complex and allowed for decent
farming. They also constructed dikes and levees to control the seasonal flooding (Cole, et al 8). As the
Sumerians learned how to control the environmental elements that challenged them, the population in
the urban areas began to grow. Specifically, by 3100 B.C.E., the area of Uruk had

  • 2. Who Is Willa Cather s Admiration In My Antonia Willa Cather has a strong admiration for the character Antonia in My Antonia. The introduction of My Antonia states that the narrator and Jim were to write down all they knew of her in order to maybe get a picture of her. I believe this strong admiration is because of the characteristics that are shown by Antonia throughout the story. She is a hardworking girl that belongs to a Bohemian family who has started a farm in Nebraska. Not only is she hard working but throughout the story she shows characteristics of being strong both inside and out. Also, it is very apparent that she wants to be independent and make her own decisions. I think Willa Cather admires the character Antonia because she can, in a way, reflect on her characteristics ... • 5. John Steinbeck Accomplishments John Emst Steinbeck was bom on Febmary 27, 1902, in Salinas, Califomia. The time and place of his birth are important because Steinbeck matured as an artist in his early thirties and during the darkest days of the Depression, and his most important fictions are set in his beloved Salinas Valley. In one sense, Steinbeck s location in time and place may have made him a particularly American artist. Bom just after the closing of the frontier, Steinbeck grew up with a fmstrated modem America and witnessed the most notable failure of the American Dream with the Great Depression. He was a writer who inherited the great tradition of the American Renaissance of the nineteenth century and who was forced to reshape it in terms of the historical and literary ... Steinbeck traveled extensively, devofing himself to film and nonfiction projects. In 1950, he married Elaine Scott, establishing a supportive relationship that allowed him to finish his epic Salinas Valley novel East of Eden. Steinbeck tried again and again to write his way back to the artistic success of his earlier years, notably in The Wayward Bus, but his commercial success kept getting in the way. East of Eden, his major postwar novel, was an attempt at another Califomia epic to match the grandeur of The Grapes of Wrath. Although the book was a blockbuster best seller, it was an artistic and critical failure. Steinbeck himself seemed to recognize his own decline, and in his last years he virtually abandoned ficfion for joumalism. Of his last novels, only The Winter of Our Discontent transcends mere entertainment, and it does not have the literary stmcture necessary to support its serious themes. Despite the popularity of Steinbeck s nonfiction, such as Travels with Charley, despite awards such as the Nobel Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and despite ... • 6. The Digestive System Of Digestion Essay Digestion is the breaking apart of foods into smaller and smaller units and absorbtion is the movements of those small units from the gut into the bloodstream or lymphatic system for circulation. (1) The digestive system is what keeps you going from day to day because without the digestive system you wouldn t be able to consume anything. You also wouldn t be able to absorb the necessary nutrients you need for your body to keep functioning correctly. The organs that play a role in the digestive system is the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, appendix, rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and the anal canal. The mouth is where it all starts. Before you even take a bite of your food, the smell of the food is what triggers your salivary glands which include the parotid, sublingual, and submandibular glands in your mouth making it start to water. Your saliva increases when you taste the food. When you chew the food into smaller pieces the enzyme amylase breaks food into small sugar molecules. To start fat digestion another enzyme is released at the base of the tongue called lingual lipase. A bolus is easy to swallow and is formed when saliva and other fluids in the mouth mixed with mucous. Bolus slides past the epiglottis and then goes through the esophagus and to the stomach where it is then digested. The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx to the stomach that is part of the upper gastrointestinal tract. (4) This organ carries the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Should The Past Be Judged Should the Past be Judged? We can learn a lot from consulting the past. We learn more about our world, more about our history, and even more about ourselves. Spanish aphorist George Santayana once said: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it (qtd. in Moncur 1). In general terms, this famous aphorism means that it is important for us to study and learn from history in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes. However, the standards and values that we use today to judge the present are much different than they were in the past. What may have seemed like the right thing to do one hundred years ago might not be viewed the same way today. In her essay At the Buffalo Bill Museum, June 1988, Jane Tompkins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cody s Wild West shows weren t just used to preserve the buffalo species; they were used to depict his actions as an Indian fighter. Buffalo Bill was a plainsman, but the place he might have held on the picture plane of the West was severely compromised and ultimately lost to the theatrical pretentions of the Wild West Show (Momaday 638). For Cody, these shows were just a transformation into an imitation of himself. The great fascination and peril of Cody s life was the riddle of who he really was. The thing that opposed him, and perhaps betrayed him, was above all else the mirage of his own identity (Momaday 631). In this essence, it is important for us to judge the past. Despite his treatment of the Indians, Cody is still an authentic American hero. Buffalo Bill isn t the only figure in American history to be viewed in this controversial manner. Consider the actions of Christopher Columbus after discovering America. In 1492, Columbus set out on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to prove that the world was round. After spending two months at sea, Columbus finally reached what he thought was India but was actually Central America. Columbus is credited for being the first to generate European awareness of the American continents in the Western Hemisphere. His voyages eventually led to the colonization of the Americas and the development of a modern world. After Columbus, more and more explorers set out to the Americas, ... • 8. Literary Analysis of Emily Dickinson s Poetry Essays Literary Analysis of Emily Dickinson s Poetry Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous authors in American History, and a good amount of that can be attributed to her uniqueness in writing. In Emily Dickinson s poem Because I could not stop for Death, she characterizes her overarching theme of Death differently than it is usually described through the poetic devices of irony, imagery, symbolism, and word choice. Emily Dickinson likes to use many different forms of poetic devices and Emily s use of irony in poems is one of the reasons they stand out in American poetry. In her poem Because I could not stop for Death, she refers to Death in a good way. Dickinson states in the poem that He kindly stopped for me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (14, 18). During this poem, Dickinson wants us to simply see her version of a person s trip during death. The imagery is supposed to lead us into seeing what the author is describing. With poems often being short in length, symbolism helps the author expand on a theme by using very little words. In ?Because i could not stop for Death,? Dickinson uses symbolism to give more substance to the journey with ?Death?. Dickinson symbolizes the ride in general as being a ride past her life to eternity. The setting sun is also a symbol for her dying life. As the sun sets and ends another day, her life ends as ?Death? takes her toward eternity. Thomas H. Johnson interprets this by saying ? the sun passed them, as it of course does all who are in the grave? (Johnson). In both cases, Dickinson symbolizes the ?sun? as a way of ending things, connecting it to the character s ending life. Dickinson also uses the third stanza as a symbol of how everything will go on normally while the character is being lead to the afterlife. The children and grain are growing which represents new life or the future (Melani). This symbol shows that ?Death? does not control everything, but can control on thing at a time. Symbolism is a key to many poems, to help the reader think deeper into the poem itself. In Emily Dickinson s poem, the most important poetic device is her unique word choice. All of the other poetic devices discussed so far have a direct ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Smoke Signals, a book about the oppressive and beneficial history of marijuana, is written as an effective argument while highlighting the plant in many different social settings. Cannabis use can be traced back to the Neolithic Period (10,200 4500 BC). Social gatherings like Hempfest promoted marijuana law reform when thousands of people gathered and enjoyed themselves in the company of other marijuana users. In retaliation, the iron fist of different drug czars, presidents, and the authorities ruled anyone who had ties to marijuana. • 12. The Importance Of Religion And Terrorism Religion and Terrorism Terrorism is use of unlawful force against property or persons in aim to intimidate or coerce the civilian population, the government and any relevant segment while seeking for either social or political objectives (Awan and Blakemore, 2016). In 1980s, politics inspired terrorism, but as 1990s approached, the dramatic increase in terrorism was enthused by religious agendas. As a result there is, need to change focus from political instigated terrorism to a dominant religious terrorism of the stereotypical terrorist organization. There is therefore a need for the law enforcement communities and intelligence groups to monitor new religious and extremist groups and movements, especially when it comes to the United States Domestic terrorism threat(Juergensmeyer, 2017). For instance, terrorists with links to a radical Muslim extremist group orchestrated the dreadful attack on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. This increase in religious terrorism is mainly due to the rise in form of militant Islamic Shiite fundamentalism. According to Bruce Hoffman a Rand researcher, religious political terrorists and secular political terrorists differ in that; the former considers violence as a religious call that is a direct response some theological imperative. Among those groups, terrorism is a full time calling and that is the reason they take credit for their actsand influence others with rules that views violence as the only way of settling disputes. • 13. What Is The Theme Of Survival In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy The ability to paint beautiful ideas on a canvas of dark events and imagery is an essential skill in the arsenal of an accomplished writer. In his novel The Road, Cormac McCarthy demonstrates his understanding of this skill. A reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle described The Road saying, [McCarthy s] tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy s stature as a living master. It s gripping, frightening, and, ultimately, beautiful. These descriptions of the tale are true throughout the novel, but particularly at the ending of the story. In the final pages of the book, McCarthy continues to engage the reader with gripping and frightening moments, to emphasize the theme of survival, and to reveal beauty and the miracle of goodness. Throughout the novel, survival is a constant objective for the boy and his father. McCarthy s gripping and frightening moments are most obviously interwoven with this theme. Soon after the death of his father the boy looks up and sees that someone was coming. He started to turn and go back into the woods but he didnt. He just stood in the road and waited, the pistol in his hand (McCarthy 281). With the approach of this new potential threat, the boy s safety and survival are brought into question. As the strange man comes near, a tension builds while the boy tries to make a decision that could quite possibly affect the rest of his life. • 14. Persuasive White House White is one of those shades that we often avoid at all costs in a kid s bedroom doors since it stains very easily and takes a lot of work to keep clean and looking great. In most children s bedrooms, the only place that you will see white is on the ceiling, with most parents taking the stand of banishing white doors from a kid s bedroom. Here are just a few alternatives that make a great replacement for white bedroom doors in your child s room: Natural wood finishes are high, but faux wood materials that are more durable are a better choice. Your priority in a kid s bedroom doors is durability. Otherwise, you will be replacing the door far more often than you would like. For instance, crayons, food, gum, dirt, mud, pencils, and markers leave marks that are almost impossible to get rid of totally and to even make a dent in the stain you have to buy special products. Pen, marker, and gum rarely come off entirely, leaving some trace of the original stain. Some color options will not have this problem; such as black and some wood finish shades. Consider this scenario: Your six year old son comes running in the house after an afternoon playing outside. His feet and hands are covered in mud, grass, and grime, and the first place he is heading is not likely to be the bathroom if he can sneak past Mom. Browns and black hide more than just stains on your child s bedroom doors. We mostly consider the entry door for the bedroom, but this also applies to closet doors and bathroom doors for some kids rooms. Many shades of brown and black hide the stains we have already gone over, but they also mask scuff marks, small scratches, and minor dings. White doors show everything, including the smallest ding, nick, mark, scratch, or scrape. As you make plans to do your spring cleaning or just think about touching up the details in the house, those white doors will often be the first things that catch your ... • 15. Cuban Relations During The Cuban Revolution US Cuban relations have not been the friendliest since the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Only recently during President Barack Obama s second term in office did the US really try to resolve the Cuban issue and only then did it become such a priority. US Cuban relations have always been a mixed bag of plenty of good and evil deeds. The US needs all the allies it can get and it needs to refocus in Latin America. Cuba is no real challenge to American power but Cuba represents a sore spot for American foreign policy. The US must work as one with Cuba in order to normalize relations with Cuba and bring Cubans into the 21st century. There are plenty of Cuban Americans who want desperately to see family and friends on the island and the US must work together with Cuba to achieve these goals. Cuba has been a hot topic of debate ever since the Cuban Revolution and it continues to be one which is why there is no better time to study Cuba. Cuba has a long cultural history which makes it interesting to study and now that the US is finally working with the Cuban government on normalizing relations, more scholars will be traveling to Cuba. More information about Cuba and the Cuban culture will become available as the US moves to being better neighbors. This is important for researchers and others to gain new insights on Cuba which have not been available for the past fifty to sixty years. A main controversial question I will be looking into is the question of whether are we born already equipped with mechanisms which help us to learn language, or is language learned throughout a child s environment by, for example, imitation and repetition? Studies done by some opposing researchers claim to show that nature and nurture promote language development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Jim did learn speech it became noticeably odd to others around him as he had developed his own, unique grammatical characteristics and his poor articulation meant he didn t acquire normal language skills (Sachs et al 1981). Bruner suggests that this was due to lack of social interaction in his learning of speech, which again highlights the importance of nurture in promoting a child s language development. However, it can be argued with (Bruner 1964) that social interaction doesn t explain all the complexities of language acquisition. Almost every day the language we hear is often incorrect, poorly defined, incomplete and full of hesitations, mispronunciations and other errors, and yet despite this we still learn to talk following the correct grammatical rules. Again this indicates the idea of Chomsky s (1968) LAD model that children are born hard wired with the innate knowledge of linguistic rules and so these rules help the baby make estimations and presumptions about the language it is hearing. From these estimations and presumption the child can work out grammatical sets of rules and when more language is exposed to them, the more their language develops. Even within Chomsky s (1968) LAD theory, undoubtedly he believed the role and promotion of the nature aspect is the core foundation on which language can develop. Pope St. John Paul II canonized 482 Catholic Saints and beatified 1,338 Blesseds. He is remembered for being a pious Pope and canonizing many wonderful saints. A year later, in 1939, Nazi occupation forces closed the university and Karol had to work in a quarry, from 1940 to 1944, and then the Solvay Chemical Factory to avoid being sent to Germany. Literary Analysis over One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Essay LITERARY ANALYSIS One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey during a time in our society when pressures of our modern world seemed at their greatest. Many people were, at this time, deemed by society s standards to be insane and institutionalized. One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest is set in a ward of a mental institution. The major conflict in the novel is that of power. Power is a recurring and overwhelming theme throughout the novel. Kesey shows the power of women who are associated with the patients, the power Nurse Ratched has, and also the power McMurphy fights to win. Laughter makes the patients feel good, and, specifically, Bromden feels good and begins to remember other things that made him feel good (Tanner 4). McMurphy s power in laughter is intensified by Nurse Ratched s lack of laughter. McMurphy s laughter and humor are genuine while Nurse Ratched s humor is forced and smiles are chiseled like in plastic (Wallace 3, 5). Power enables McMurphy to make changes on the ward and to survive in the institution. His sanity compared to the other patients, his manipulations, and his ability to laugh give him the power. He, in turn, gives patients a sense of power by teaching them to laugh at themselves, Nurse Ratched, and the world (Magill 1533). Second in a discussion of power are the women associated with the patients. The supervisor at the hospital is associated with the patients by controlling who is employed to take care of the patients. Nurse Ratched and the supervisor served in the Army together as nurses. They are still very close and have a good relationship. Because of this relationship, Nurse Ratched s employment is secured and others won t stand up to her for fear of losing their own jobs. Standard And Oil Argumentative Essay One instance, from real life, of the US government acting to promote competition and break up monopolies occurred in 1911 when the United States Supreme Court ruled that Standard and Oil was an illegal monopoly. Standard and Oil Co Inc. was an American oil company established in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller as a corporation in Ohio which by early 1880 controlled some 90 percent of US refineries and oil pipelines and dominated the oil products market through horizontal integration and later through vertical integration. Standard and Oil gained a monopoly in the oil industry by buying rival refineries and forming several companies for distributing and marketing its products around the globe. In 1882, these various companies were combined into the Standard Oil Trust and It became the largest oil refinery monopoly in the world. Rockefeller became the richest man in the world which consequently made him a target of critics and politicians. These powerful politicians accused him of under cutting and destroying his competitors by engaging in unethical practices, such as price fixing and colluding with railroads to eliminate his competition and to ultimately gain a monopoly in the industry. Purpose The purpose of the experiment was to see if more salt content resulted in higher ice cream formations. Background Information To make ice cream you need milk, half and half, sugar and vanilla. All of these products make ice cream, but they must be cooled down. That is where salt comes in. Just like when salt is spread on roads in cold weather to prevent freezing roads, salt in ice cream allows the freezing point to decrease. Since ice cream isn t just water, salt is needed to make the ice creams temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The salt makes the mixture of ice cream colder than with just ice. By mixing the ice and salt, the freezing point gets lowered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the amount of salt (Tbsp.) increased, so did the height of Ice cream. When two Tbsp. of salt were used, the data resulted in 4.8 cm, 3.1 cm, and 3.4 cm. When the control (6 Tbsp.) were used, the height resulted in 7.5 cm, 8.4 cm, and 5.9 cm. Ten Tbsp. resulted in 5.2 cm, 11.4 cm, and 9.8 cm. As one can see, increasing the amount of salt, showed an increase in the height of Ice cream. Conclusion The purpose of the experiment was to see if more salt content resulted in higher ice cream formations. The question the lab asked was What variable needs to be changed to produce greater ice cream height? The hypothesis was If the salt content increases, then the ice cream formation will yield taller formations. The hypothesis was supported. As the salt content went from 2 Tbsp., 6 Tbsp., and 10 Tbsp. The average went up from 3.6 cm per 2 Tbsp. to 7.2 cm per 6 Tbsp. to 8.8 cm per 10 Tbsp. The principle guiding the outcome, was the salt, lowering the freezing point. Works Cited Singularity. Junot Diaz s novel truly does tell the brief story of the wondrous life of Oscar de Léon, our Dominican American protagonist, better known as Oscar Wao. Weighing in at 245 pounds, our hopeless romantic loves comic books, writes science fiction in all of his spare time, and, as described by our homodiegetic narrator Yunior, is a loser with a capital L (Diaz 17). While the title might allude that this is a story solely about Oscar, Diaz also delves deep into the lives of those closest to him. This narrative tells the epic journey of Oscar, as well as his family members, and how their experiences in the United States and Dominican Republic come together full circle at the end of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, with the help of some postmodern techniques. As an immigrant himself, Diaz is able to use his journey to bring attention to the cultural stereotypes of his characters, but unlike many bildungsroman writings, our character s coming of age story does not provide him with enough spiritual learnings to give him the quintessential happy ending. The overall growth of Oscar only reveals the flaws in his culture, a fatal flaw in his case. Because Oscar does not comply with the Dominican standards, he faces heavy repercussions in his life. As a story told in a fragmented, non linear form, Yunior is able to recall anecdotes from different time periods, whether of Oscar, his mother Beli, or his sister Lola. According to Trochim and Donnelly, there are four types of validity including conclusion, internal, construct, and external (2008). In this assignment, three of these types will be discussed. Internal validity is the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure. Instrumentation is concerned a lack of consistency in the measuring instrument that could account for invalid results of a research study. This threat is most likely to occur when two different forms are used for the pre and post tests or if the instrument is constructed poorly. (Creswell, 2009). Mortality can occur if research participants drop out of the study before completion. This problem is more likely to occur if participants are volunteers or if the sample group is too small (Creswell, 2009). Statistical regression is the tendency of participants who score high on a pretest to score lower (or closer to the mean) on the posttest and consequently, participants who score low on a pretest tend to score higher on the posttest. This regression may significantly influence the distribution of scores. Finally, differential selection can occur if already formed groups are used in a study as the groups may have had existing differences from the beginning. For example, the subjects in each group may have extreme age differences or educational backgrounds. As a result, any differences found at the posttest may be due to these differential selection differences rather than being due to the independent variable. Firstly, philosophical scepticism is questioning whether any knowledge can be known with certainty. He believes that we acquire most our knowledge through our sense perception, however, he argues that our senses are not error proof and therefore he doubts his entire foundation of knowledge. He further proves his argument by saying that when we are dreaming we are not aware that this is not our reality so what is there to stop us from thinking that the experiences we re having now are not reliable. Functions And Complex Anatomy Of The Cardiovascular System According to the Discovery Channel, the Cardiovascular System is the generator that drives the bodily machine of humans (Discovery Channel, Your Cardiovascular System, 2016). Its multiple functions and complex anatomy helps humans get through vital tasks (National Geographic, Heart, 1996). Such as, breathing, blood circulation, and food intake. In other words, the cardiovascular system delivers and transports oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body, transports and circulates blood throughout the body, distributes nutrients and food within the body and transports waste products out of it (National Geographic, Heart, 1996). Another part of the cardiovascular system is blood. Blood is a bodily fluid that runs through the veins, arteries and capillaries to help the cardiovascular system perform its job (National Geographic, Heart, 1996). On average, adults have about 5 litres of blood. Blood is the stream in the human body that takes part in the transportation of oxygen and nutrients, and filtering out waste products (The American Society of Hematology, Blood Basics, 2016). Other functions of blood are protection of the human body by forming blood clots to avoid blood loss, fighting of infection through cells and antibodies, and the regulation of body temperature (The American Society of Hematology, Blood Basics, 2016). The blood is also composed of certain materials. The blood is made up of plasma, red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (The American Society of Hematology, Blood Basics, 2016). The last main part of the cardiovascular system is blood vessels. Blood vessels are tubes in the system that carries the blood (BBC, The Circulatory System, 2014). The three types of blood vessels are arteries, veins and capillaries (BBC, The Circulatory System, 2014). Arteries transport blood away from the heart (BBC, The Circulatory System, 2014). Veins ... Traveling at a slow, steady pace, the sound of creaking saddles and rustling leaves from the crisp breeze was the only thing you could hear for miles. As we ventured across several clear rushing streams, my horse decided to abruptly stop for a quick drink. The hearty green foliage was beautiful as mountain laurel and flame azalea scattered the old dirt trail while the sun peeked through the trees casting shadows. The trail weaved up the mountain and the higher we climbed the narrower the trail became; therefore, looking down was quite a frightening experience. After an hour of riding Joe, our guide, took the group to an overlook area that had spectacular views of mountains and nearby hills. The dancing wisps of clouds hung over the mountains, and according to Joe, the Cherokee referred to the mountains as being shaconage or blue, like smoke (Oswald 98). As the group proceeded down the mountain, the trail became rocky and muddy, making our ride quite lively heading back to the stables. Sadly, another awesome adventure has ended, but the memories will last forever. • 39. The Partition Of Indi India Under the British Empire, India had remained fairly peaceful up until the 1940s. Its two major religious groups, the Hindus and the Muslims, began lashing out at each other and their beliefs causing strife all throughout India. There is a long history of violence between the two, so it was only a matter of time before India split apart. The Partition of India was a decree written mostly by the All India Muslim League that created the separate nation of Pakistan. The Indian state of East Punjab was created in 1947 for the Hindus, when the Partition of India split the former British province of Punjab between India and Pakistan (Hasan 35). The Muslim exodus from India, as well as the Hindu influx in to India and East Punjab is still one of the most important events in India s history. This was not completely unexpected, however. The Muslim and Hindu/Sikh populations found all throughout India were at odds often. They were in constant turmoil over religious beliefs and living spaces, so the Indian government had to figure out a way to resolve the conflict before India broke out into a civil war. Strong efforts were made to try and unify Hindus and Muslims in India, but because of their inability to cooperate, their strong beliefs, and the ongoing violence between each other, the separate nation of Pakistan had to be created to establish peace. Since everyone is from completely different backgrounds, there is no way to figure out all the reasons for why they do it. According to Katherine S. Newman, there are five things that all school shooters have in common. At some point in their life, they were seen as different in some way, shape, or form. All shooters also suffer from some sort of depression. Because of the depression, they look to be problem solvers. They want to be known and get the glamour and street credit. They crave the power, status, and history. They feel as if the glorious feeling of death will cure the quiet, dark, and alone side that they have. The shooter also broadcasts their intentions and the attacks are never spontaneous. By giving little hints, they try to gain friends and keep the ones they have safe. They all want to have social status or revenge on a group that does not want them. (Newman). Although these reasons all make sense, it is such a broad spectrum of ideas and characteristics. There is no way of knowing the motive for a persons actions, especially if it is not being looked for or talked about. While lack of education and economic barriers are two large factors related to the problem, another crucial factor related to the high rate of STDs in the Bronx is age. For several reasons, adolescents are at a higher risk for developing sexually transmitted diseases and statistically are the population with the highest rate of STDs in the United States. The CDC states The burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among people aged 15 24 years accounts for nearly half of all STDs reported in the U.S (CDC, 2015). Adolescents are a vulnerable population as they are undergoing so many changes and this can make them more susceptible to partaking in risky sexual behavior. In the Bronx, adolescents make up the largest population at 25.3% of the total population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). The high rate of STDs in adolescents and the large population of adolescents in the Bronx correlates with the high rate of STDs in the Bronx. The issue of an education barrier can have a detrimental effect on a population when it comes to healthcare, especially sexual healthcare because it is not something people tend to discuss openly. It is important that people receive some sort of sexual education so that they can keep themselves and others safe and healthy. Without this education, people will not have the proper knowledge base on which to make the right decisions when it comes to their sexual health and well being. It is ... Even though the exploitation was ramped throughout all the colonies, Congo might have been the most extreme case of exploitation. Through the exploitation of the Congo lands, and the government deeming most of the rain forest uninhabitable those lands were turned over to the Belgium government and the resources were exhausted in that area. As the rubber vines would dry up and die the expectation output from the Belgium government remained the same. • 43. Owls Research Paper Owls are almost freakishly flexible. Owls necks can swivel up to 270 degrees without tearing tendons or rupturing a blood vessel (8). Scientists from John Hopkins University School of Medicine have information to explain how owls are able to perform the feat that has endlessly confused birders. People and most animals can move their eyes to see their surroundings, owls have fixed eyes, which means that they are immovable (8). Because of this, owls need to move their necks in order to be able to see anything. Owls bodies are more flexible than humans, because unlike humans, who have two socket pivots, owls only have one. This allows them to twist more freely (8). According to Eric Forsman, a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forest Service, birds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These birds can fly right above their prey s noses without being spotted, simply because of their wings. Their silentness is due to their unique wings. In other birds, when air flows over their wings, it creates a gushing noise as large areas of air turbulence build up (4). Unlike the other avian creatures, the owl has a way of silencing this gush of air. At the owl s wing edge, there are small bows and hooks that split up rushing air into miniature turbulences (4). These miniature turbulences flow down the wing toward the trailing edge (4). The trailing edge is attached to special, pliable trimming feathers. These feathers split the air even farther as it rolls off the trailing edge, making the flight of the bird almost noiseless. However, if there s the tiniest bit of noise left, it gets absorbed into the down, or short and soft, feathers. Even though the owl is equipped with numerous noise cancelling flight tools, it is still complicated for them to make a catch because their wing has to be at the perfect angle when the bird dives for its prey in order for the special silent feathers to work. However, when used correctly, all of these feathers combined reduce noise so efficiently that even humans can t hear flying owls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many factors. It is important for students to learn to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a student that is receiving bad grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get better grades, and the student may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On the other hand, a student who is receiving good grades may feel stress due to the pressure of maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer s judgement and parent s expectations. Sources of stress in schools include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress results in emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the student may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don t respect them, and their self esteem will be impacted because of poor grades. This can result in behaviour and emotional issues which further the student s insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the resulting behaviour due to stress can be misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware. Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can explain how they are feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another manifestation of stress in students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers to keep their jobs and for schools to ... Practicing religion has been a major part of peoples daily rituals for centuries. Believing in a higher power than ones own takes full dedication to that certain religion or God(s). In order to give respect and be able to apply action into these beliefs it has became a tradition around the world to build a place of worship. These places of worship are referred to differently across the world depending on location and the religion being practiced. More specifically the Temple is a building that is devoted for worshiping but also is known to house a multitude of religions depending on its location. For example, the Romans have been known to house their Gods in Temples usually with a multitude of columns to incase a statue of a God or Gods. Similarly, the people of Indonesia have been building decorative Candi (Indonesian word for Temple) to praise and worship their Gods.4 For instance, the Romans constructed The Pantheon, dedicated to the Gods of Ancient Rome compared to Candi Prambanan built by the Indonesians in order to worship the concept of Trimurti. 3 The link between these two cultures can be seen in the way that both Romans and Indonesians worship their Gods in Temples with the use of separate sacred rooms and what these Temples represent for their culture, but are able to be separated by their choice of architectural form, style and use of ... This proximity provided them with remarkable similarities, yet a copious amount of differences still grew between the two areas. Largely due to their access to resources and environment, the communities grew in very different manners, which led to differences in political development, as well as their leaders, which in turn affected their overall success. In regards to Sumer, it flourished in the area of Mesopotamia, or as the Greeks called it, the Land between Rivers (Cole, et al 7). Specifically, these rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates. Despite being surrounded by waterways, Sumer existed in an extremely arid climate, which left the soil sandy and summer weather unbearably hot. The rivers presented a series of problems. Not only were the Tigris and Euphrates noted for their violence and unpredictably , but also both were prone to flooding (Cole, et al 7). Despite these adversities, Sumer still managed to grow into the first urban society (Cole, et al 7). Residents in this area quickly learned simply irrigation tactics, overtime these channels became more complex and allowed for decent farming. They also constructed dikes and levees to control the seasonal flooding (Cole, et al 8).
