 Facebook is a social networking service launched
in February 2004, owned and operated
by Facebook, Inc.As of September 2012, Facebook
has over one billion active users, more than half of
whom use Facebook on a mobile device. Users
must register before using the site, after which they
may create a personal profile, add other users
as friends, and exchange messages, including
automatic notifications when they update their
profile. Additionally, users may join common-
    interest user groups, organized by
workplace, school or college, or other
characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists
such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends".
 Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college
roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo
Saverin, Andrew McCollum,Dustin Moskovitz and Chris
Hughes. The website's membership was initially limited by the
founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other
colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford
University. It gradually added support for students at various
other universities before opening to high school students, and
eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. Facebook now
allows any users who declare themselves to be at least 13
years old to become registered users of the site.

 In May 2005, Accel partners invested $12.7 million in
Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1 million of his own
    money to the pot.

 According to a May 2011 Consumer Reports survey, there
are 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts and 5 million
under 10, violating the site's terms of service.
 What does it mean to like a photo in
facebook? Do people really like it as it
is? Perhaps they can relate to it? Or
maybe they would just want to get the
attention to the one who posted it.
 Facebook is considered the biggest
    social networking site where people
    meet, greet and communicate with
    each other. Share issues, opinions,
    fashion statements, business ideas,
advocacies or just plain gossip there will
always be a reason for people to sign in.
 Considering the numerous uses of
facebook, this report will only enumerate
five major ones to summarize the
  activities of people in Facebook.
 -Socialization
 -Updates
 -Advertising
 -Advocacies
 -Amusement/Gaming
Facebook is a SNS (Social Networking site). It is
made for socialization. People can talk to
friends, introduce friends and meet new ones. Most
of the times, for people to meet or attract attention
of new people they establish an exceptional online
identity. Some post pictures where they look
attractive (even most of the times it is edited
through photoshop), some post funny/ memorable
quotes/blogs, and some just posts about anything
to attract attention.

By giving attention to the impressions of people
make in the net we see their true idetities or
insecurities that they can show in real life. Things
that they don’t have courage to say in
reality, which in turn is widely liberated on the net.
 My favorite or mostly my only reason to use
facebook to get updated into what is
happening to everyone and everywhere. In
facebook, you wouldn’t needto read the
newspapers everyday to know the news
    because people already post the
significant ones on your newsfeed. Not only
can you know the current events of your
friends too. May it be regarding their
relationship status, achievements or just to
catch up with each other, facebook can
    peovide it for you.
 Not only advertising or marketing is a
major use of facebook but it is one of the
purposes of internet. Selling products can
be amplified if it is widely known, and the
cost of advertising nowadays costs a
fortune. So why not use something that
can provide the same service for free?
A picture of a crying hungry African baby can
soften any person’s heart when seen, that it can be
a powerful tool for awareness of the poverty that is
going on in Africa. These posts naturally came from
people who care about something and want to
share it to other people. Whether it is environmental
awareness or gender equality, people will always
wan to fight for something. Facebook can be used
to share it to everyone. Gather likes know how
many can relate and are concerned, and also get
donations from people.
There has been a wide variety of games to
past time in facebook. Whether you are into
casual gaming such as
farmville,dragonvale,tetris,etc. or you are
more into serious gaming or mmorpg (
massive multiplayer online role-playing
game) facebook has them all without
heavy downloading.
 In conclusion, facebook or other social
networking sites can offer a small
alternate reality to people. It can be
their alter ego, past time, source of
    income, newspaper, and megaphone
for feelings. It can be a voice for some
who are emotionally small in the real
world. That people can resort to as an
    outlet of thoughts and emotions.
