Year Up is a new program to Jacksonville this year, but has been in existence for over 15 years across America. Year Up has become a strategic source of entry level middle skill talent for some of Americaโs largest and best known companies.
Year Up is a workforce development organization that rigorously prepares 18-24 year up urban young adults for successful living wage careers and higher education.
Year Up is organized as a nonprofit organization and is dedicated to closing the Opportunity Divide between Americaโs disconnected urban young adults and corporations looking for a new strategic source of entry level talent.
There is an opportunity divide in America. While one can discuss the numerical totals, there are millions of urban young adults that have the motivation, desire and ability to learn but do not have the knowledge to connect with corporate America. On the other side of the divide, there are millions of unfilled corporate entry level jobs. Corporate America does not see the urban youth as viable candidates due to generalizations concerning reliability, dress code, behavior, etc.
Year Upโs mission is to close the opportunity divide by offering an education program to the urban youth and connecting them to the corporate positions with an internship.
The Year Up Program includes a six month intensive educational program that teaches technical and professional skills required to meet the needs of Corporate America. Upon completion of the academic program, the Year Up student is connected to the corporate positions through a six month internship. The student will also receive 20+ college credits for the Year Up program as well as a weekly stipend to help defray commuting and minor living expenses. This program is built upon high expectations and high support. Each student signs a behavioral agreement which describes approximately 12 โ 15 infractions (lateness, missed assignment, etc.) which if incurred reduce the weekly stipend and the students 200 point allowance. Positive points can be achieve for no infractions and other good behaviors. Year Up provides extra support to those students that need it. Once a studentโs point total hits zero, they have โfiredโ themselves from the program.
Here is a small sampling of our corporate partners. Corporate partners range from traditional financial services companies like JP Morgan Chase and State Street to 21st century companies like Google, Facebook and LinkedIn. Year Up has over 250 existing corporate partners and we continue to growth that list as new organizations join our program. We will continue to grow our partner base as we expand geographically and via new curriculums.
In 2014, Year Up will serve over 2000 urban young adults and will have served over 13,000 students since our first class of 22 students in Boston in 2000. Year Up continually looks for expansion opportunities and opened two new locations in Jacksonville, FL and Phoenix, AZ in 2015.
The initial six months of the Year Up program are focused on the intensive skills training required to prepare the students for entry level corporate jobs. Some of the topical areas include computer applications, such as the Microsoft suite of tools, operating systems and the internet. Additional education in networking, desktop support and QA testing are also part of the curriculum. A portion of the curriculum is dedicated to Business Communications which include proper writing of emails, how to handle a difference of opinion with co-workers as well as verbal communications. All designed to prepare the student for the proper behaviors in the corporate environment. The Year Up professional skills, often referred to as our โsecret sauceโ, are a significant part of the academic program. The entire academic program is supported by Year Up advisors and mentors to assist the urban young adults as they proceed through first six months.
The second six months represent the internship program. This chart lists some of the positions that our students have fulfilled during their internships. Various IT positions from Help Desk to QA testing. They have also fulfilled internships in various business functional departments and customer service positions. Year Up continues our high support model by having Professional Development Workshops (PDW) every Wednesday afternoon at the Year Up facilities for the students that are on internships. This enables the students to spend 36 hours per week executing internship responsibilities. In addition to the PDW sessions, Year Up advisors and social workers are available to assist interns on an individual basis as needed.
Year Upโs results speak for themselves. The program has delivered value to Americaโs leading corporations for over 15 years and is ready to deliver value to leading businesses in the Jacksonville area.
