Gandalf As An Epic Hero
Gandalf
The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets
of life for men to see by. Felix Adler
Although it is accurate, rarely has the epithet epic hero been used to describe Gandalf the Wizard. Epic
heroes are easily recognizable throughout History textbooks and simple searches via Google, but
many people just cannot put a finger on what exactly is an epic hero. The criteria is simple to say, yet
difficult to accomplish; do a tremendous deed or disservice and be identified by a well known or well
established piece of writing or section of History. In The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf embodies the
characteristics of an epic hero, such as traveling vast distances, battling supernatural foes, and having
humility.
Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Gandalf; in their time, these four figures traveled
over vast distances. Hannibal through Italy, Caesar through Gaul, Napoleon through Europe, and
Gandalf through Middle earth. However, Gandalf did not just travel the span of Middle earth, but the
span of life and death. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf is pulled into a
dark chasm by a Luciferic creature, a chasm that has a symbolic meaning. He lands and defeats the
Balrog on a snowy mountaintop, but death creeps up on him, until it finally takes him over. Gandalf
then began a separate journey, one that took him away from life and entered the unknown. As the stars

The New Orleans Jazz And Music
I got the chance to attend the Jazzy Stars late concert at the Acme Lounge in the Arts and
Entertainment district in Miami, Florida. The band that performed was called Lemon City Trio.
Lemon City Trio has three bands members that go by the names Brian Robertson, Nick Tannura, and
Aaron Glueckauf. The jazz concert consisted of two sets of ten songs that lasted for about two hours.
Brian Robertson played the organ, Nick Tannura played guitar, and Aaron Glueckauf played drums.
This was the first live concert of any genre that I got to attend.
The Lemon City Trio sound consists of funk, jazz, R B, and hip hop meshed together. I could connect
to their music because their music included genre sounds that I listen to on an everyday basis. The ...

The last cover was a song by Al Green called I m Still in Love With You . The dynamics for this song
was interesting to me. They alternated from crescendos and decrescendos throughout this song, which
made the song a little bit more interesting. Everyone had a solo in this song. The organ player s solo
was the best one to me because he played so fast at times even though the tempo of this song was
mostly slow. This was my least favorite song of the set because I felt as though this song had more
minor keys than major keys.
The remaining songs in the concerts were original songs that the band wrote and songs that were
coming out on their debut EP. The first original song played was the song Same Old Thing . This song
had a polyphonic texture between the guitar and the piano and had a fast tempo. One of the motifs in
this song was very catchy and was repeated a couple times. This song was short and had a steady
rhythm. The dynamics of this song were good because the tones were not too soft or too loud. The
melody had a bright and warm mood that matched the atmosphere of the club. All the instruments
blended beautifully which resulted in a great harmony. I felt like the drumming on this song made the
song complete.
The timbre in the song Flying Free was bright and had a smooth flow. I liked how the melody repeated
a couple times in this song. The guitar solo in this

bell hooks is successful in delivering her message in article Learning in the Shadow of Race and Class
because she gives examples of herself as well as examples of other students who she has known. She
argues that lower class students were ignored by their teachers and peers. Although, few sentences and
paragraphs in her article are not as effective as the whole article, still reading it is interesting. In her
essay, hooks defends poor people who have been ignored by white people at school. She also explains
her situation when she was studying. She defends poor people, which is what most of the good writers
are doing in order to let their readers know that they are not thinking about getting money or anything
like that. hooks is an effective writer through the use of persuasive examples and emotional appeals. In
her essay, hooks gives many examples about herself and others, about how it feels to be alone, and
poor. That makes her believable. And these examples improved her essay. She says that she stopped
thinking about having money and everything else but the education. She talks about a girl who never
gave up studying, despite some problems she encountered. She talked about specific friends of hers,
for example, Like my friend during freshmen year, she shared the understanding of what it was like to
be a have not in a world of haves. hooks expresses how difficult it was when she was in San
Francisco, and people around her spoke a language she did not understand.

Discourse Community Analysis Essay example
The Journey of A Successful Soccer Player
In order to be accepted into a discourse community, a person must learn typical ways people in that
community communicate and argue. In this paper I will prove that I entered the discourse community
of my high school soccer team by acquiring knowledge, establishing my credibility, and learning the
game I love. In other words, I will be using the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals. I love to play soccer
and watch the professionals who play on TV. I have played since I was ten years old and always
played in a city league team. The requirements of being part of the team were simple but at the same
time very hard. I was recently part of my high school soccer team, the Crowley Eagles. People might

In soccer you must be able to communicate with not only one, but with all of your team mates. This is
something we worked on from the start. We communicated in many different ways such as training on
a daily basis, to enduring a punishment together as a team. Even calling each other out became a
common way of communicating. Everyone in the team had to learn to collaborate with each other
even if they didn t like it. It seemed kind of pointless at first but it was all part of building chemistry
with each other. It was difficult year after year loosing and gaining people to be able to accept new
players in to our family. Coach King was one of the greatest coaches I have ever had. He came off as
this mean and grumpy old man at first but we ended up changing how we viewed him. He made it
clear to us that we just had understand his meaning of the word GAS. GAS meant grades, attitude, and
then skill. Grades of course were the most important thing because no pass no play was the rule. Most
of the guys had no problems with this but there was quite a few that had some trouble. When one was
struggling we all had to step up and help if we wanted to have a full squad for our next few games. We
did many things to help them including getting help from tutors or teachers when in danger of failing.
As the year went on, many obstacles were thrown at us and we counted on each other to get through
them.

Non-Originalist Theory Of Justice Scalia
Justice Scalia argued that originalist theory was the better option for interpreting the provisions in the
Constitution. This topic fits into the Supreme Court s responsibility of interpreting the Constitution to
resolve public disputes. Scalia argued that non originalism is incompatible with judicial review of
constitutionality because it allows an expansion of contemporary freedoms. In other words, non
originalist theory allows judges to incorporate current societal values in their decisions with a limited
consideration to the original intent of the Constitution. Justice Scalia s reference to the Coy v. Iowa
case illustrates this point because the witnesses were separated from the defendant during their
testimony. Special consideration was

Essay on The Tell Tale Heart
The Insane Killer One of Edgar Allan Poe s most terrifying tales is The Tell Tale Heart . Poe s life was
tragic because many of the women that Edgar Allan Poe loved very much had died of tuberculosis his
mother, his foster mother, his wife Virginia, and the men in his life kept abandoning him, so that made
him dark and depressed. That darkness shows in a lot of his stories, including this one. The Tell Tale
Heart is a story about a murder the narrator commits. He kills an old man because the old man s
vulture eye makes him furious and annoyed. The narrator of The Tell Tale Heart is insane because he
murdered the old man without a motive and because he was so paranoid in his actions. ... Show more

Even taking 5 minutes to stick a head inside a room is too long, but 1 hour that s totally crazy and a
big sign of a neurotic person. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! no, no! screams the
narrator as they are sitting in the old man s room with the police officers. They heard! they suspected!
they knew! they were making a mockery of my horror! this I thought and this I think. This shows that
the narrator is obsessed with the old man s heart because he keeps on hearing it, even though that s
probably just his dirty conscience. It also shows that he is paranoid about the officers hearing the
heartbeat, even though it s impossible and they obviously don t, because they don t start looking
around or asking any questions, which they would have done if they really did hear the heartbeat. The
narrator in the story is insane because he murders an old man without any motive and is really
paranoid. I believe that Edgar Allan Poe is trying to tell us in this story that we shouldn t let our
thoughts and feelings bottle up, because eventually we ll do something insane, like the narrator did.
He bottled everything up inside of himself, which led to the murder of an innocent person. We should
let those thoughts and feelings out so we wouldn t explode and, for example, kill someone. Don t keep
anything bad inside your heart because later you might regret

The Water Systems At Bulls Creek, Wild Basin, And Mckinney...
Our study determined how detrimental pet activity is on the environment, more specifically the water
systems at Bulls Creek, Wild Basin, and McKinney Falls. My hypothesis was the if there is human
and pet activity near water ways, there will be an increase in algae boom and chlorophyll a
concentration because bacteria body material, and feces of the dog affects the water s health. Our
results did not agree with our hypothesis because Chlorophyll a concentration was higher at
McKinney Falls, where there was the most pet activity, and lower at Bulls Creek, even though pets
were allowed also. Additionally, the Wild Basin, where there were no pets allowed, had samples with
an unexpectedly high chlorophyll a concentration compared to the samples from Bulls Creek. Other
factors including canopy cover, and urban runoff could have also altered water quality.
I infer that the water quality was affected more by other factors. The two sites with about the same
amount of human activity were McKinney Falls State Park and Bulls Creek. On the other hand, Wild
Basin swimming is not allowed. Our results showed that the order from greatest to least amount of
nitrate and phosphorous concentration was Bulls Creek, McKinney Falls, and Wild Basin at the
lowest. Hence, because Bulls Creek was had the high amounts of human activity and nitrate and
phosphorous levels, this relates

Persuasive Essay On Decriminalizing All Drugs
We all have an interest in making sure teens grow up healthy and drug free. John Walters Would you
like to live in a safer, drug free community? I do and here is how to start: by decriminalizing all drugs!
Since Richard Nixon coined the phrase War on Drugs in 1971, America has failed miserably to reduce
the consumption and traffic of illicit drugs from outside our borders. Although a heavy portion are
against decriminalizing drugs because of short term consequences and health concerns in public
communities, Portugal s evident sixteen year experience with drug decriminalization has proven
otherwise with significant, long term positive outcomes. However, due to the long lasting and
persuasive positive outcomes of decriminalization, it is vital that the U.S. strongly reconsiders the
prohibition of all drugs for the health and economic benefit of our communities. Obviously, there will
be short term consequences but also benefits too. Unfortunately, the hype of decriminalizing drugs
will cause an increase in the number of users but it is important to note that a considerable amount of
those being newly documented are closet junkies finally being revealed. As Dr. Caitlin Hughes, a
member of the Drug Policy Modelling Program of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre
puts it, Portuguese decriminalization did not lead to major increases in drug use. Indeed, evidence
indicates reductions in problematic use, drug related harms and criminal justice overcrowding
(Hughes; Stevens). As this research shows, the predictions on Portugal s well being after the
decriminalization of all drugs were incorrect and the complete opposite occurred creating healthy and
safer communities because of awareness. Bringing our attention back to the increasing number of
users within the hype years, public safety is a large concern where communities will have a difficult
time adapting to the new policy and becoming accustomed to a new culture and lifestyle. On the
contrary, I find a few years of craziness to be minimal in comparison to the long term achievement
that this law intends to achieve. Portugal has proved that decriminalization reduces drug use, drug
related harms, and criminal justice overcrowding. João Goulão,

Eco design is an way of design the product with special consideration for the environmental impacts
of the product during its whole lifecycle. Within the present economic, marked by the phenomenon

progress, we are become part of the increase of the society s exigencies regarding the environment
protection, exigencies made known by more and more severe regulations. Forced by these regulations,
and taking into account the greater significance of the ecological criteria when it comes to classifying
products and services, on the market, under the circumstances of a diversified and extremely dynamic

performances. To this purpose, there are organizations that allocate significant amounts of their
investment funds, which favours the research development approach of those environmental friendly

Female Criticism In Frankenstein
To claim that Mary Shelley s Frankenstein was only a product of the men that surrounded her, would
do Shelley a great disservice as an author. While it is true that Shelley was trapped within some of the
conventions of her time, she was also a strong woman and a brilliant author. While she wrote
Frankenstein from a male perspective and incorporated female stereotypes, there are examples that
show Shelley was well aware of the unjust separation of the masculine and the feminine in her time. It
can be argued that the downfall of many of the characters can be attributed to this very separation. In
Frankenstein she separates Victor Frankenstein s intellectual endeavours from his emotions, the
masculine from the feminine, and shows this in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words Mary Shelley subtly commented on the conventions of her time with the positions of
her characters in the world and their eventual fates (Mellor, 116). She was aware of the conventions of
her time and of her own privilege in having been educated in an unusually masculine way. In her
novel, she has Elizabeth regret that she had not [had] the same opportunities of enlarging her
experience and cultivating her understanding as Victor Frankenstein (Shelley, 151). Most notably there
is the monster, who is portrayed as an emotional being, misunderstood because of his appearance.
Despite his exterior, Shelley portrays him as an intelligent and noble creature. One might argue that
there is a paralel between the monster s oppression and that of women in Shelley s time. In the book,
however, the monster is free to express his anger at the oppression and the hatred he has experienced,
something women were largely unable to do. The monster s imaginative self expression makes him
complex and human as a character; perhaps something Shelley wanted for female characters and the
women of her time,

What Are The Persuasive Techniques Used In Channel 4
INTRODUCTION:
Advertisements are actually everywhere and are used by many companies and organisations.
Advertisements have become a powerful foundation to sell products or information for the consumer s
knowledge by the use of persuasion, fear, shock tactics and statistics. The purpose of advertisements is
to persuade their audience into buying their product or getting a message across. Without
advertisements, companies would not be able to develop in their competitive business. BBC s
advertisement of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Channel 4 s advertisement of the 2012 Paralympics
are analogous and can be compared to its sources of form, language, audience, purpose, and context,
which are used to improvise its persuasive techniques.

This is manifested through the use of nationalistic landmarks and prominent locations within the two
texts and is used to sense nationalism to the audience as they can relate to these iconic locations and
can virtually feel as if they have taken participation in the Games. Hence the targeted audience is
persuaded to watch the broadcast to remain feeling involved. The mutual purpose of both
advertisements is to induce consumers into screening the specific broadcasting network coverage of
the games. Channel 4 s campaign is primarily composed of athletes from the United Kingdom,
whereas the athletes in the BBC s campaign are distinct from specific nations. Hence it can be
distinguished that the intended target audience for the two texts is the general public of the United
Kingdom by analysing the context within the two visual texts. BBC s advertisement has achieved its
audience by the presence of dramatic music and animations which resembled participation in events
with passion and energetic performance. Inversely, Channel 4 has freshly introduced Paralympics to
gain its popularity and viewers as it is very miniature compared with the Olympics. Channel 4 has
achieved its audience by showing the playing style of the incapacitated athletes and portraying the
causes of their physical flaw. The purpose behind it was to show sympathy

This makes me think she has no one to talk to and that her father is just there. Why doesn t she count

Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization
There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its manifestation
in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013, p.2). Despite the
fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to remark that while for
determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for sociologists, inequality is
learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism sets its foundations in biology
and a binary expression of sex (male and female), and states that men and women have inherited
different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the moment people are born, they
are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities to act in the world as either a men
or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or superiority of one sex over the other (in this
case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a necessity) for our society to function properly
(Kimmel, 2013). For example, women s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adding the social factor as one of the major influences in one s identity and, therefore, it is a form of
gender expression. Thus, individuals are more than the expression of their biological sex, they are part
of groups and these groups exert a great influence in their everyday decisions (Kimmel, 2013). In this
case, gender inequality is learned during the process of socialization. For instance, we tend to learn
how to act (gender roles) from the different norms in society. Supporting this idea, I noticed how at
school, boys and girls tend to be organized in two separate groups to play sports. This example is what

The channels are saved in each tab item but these channels are needed in the SamRunJobCtrl . The
channels are processed in that control and are used only there to create the data in the chart. In
SamRunJobCtrl the channels are written as _listVisChannels. These _listVisChannels need to be

Is The Meaning Of St Victor s Definition Of A Sacrament
Hugh of St. Victor s Definition of a Sacrament The definition of what a sacrament is has been debated
over the centuries. One such definition comes from Hugh of St. Victor, who piggybacked off of
Augustine of Hippo s definition. Hugh s definition is much more clear cut on the parameters of the
definition: it must include a physical element, it must bear a likeness to what it signifies, there must be
a good reason for it to represent a spiritual reality, and it must be capable of bestowing the benefits
that it signifies to the person. Later, Peter Lombard created his own definition and got rid of the
physical requirement. This definition falls in line with the Catholic Church s definition of a sacrament,

The Great Depression
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, is a famous quote once said during the Great Depression
by Franklin D. Roosevelt. After one world war, great financial fallout, and another world war to
follow, the twentieth century was already shaping out to be a handful. When the Great Depression was
coming to an end and the economy was trying to turn around, jobs started opening up and a new wave
of immigrants came into New York, the Puerto Ricans. For some the American dream was to come to
America and start a new life, but for others already here, it was about making it big in show business.
West Side Story , a twentieth century musical, was greatly influenced by the immigration during that
time.
Before West Side Story was written, there were some major events that occurred. For instance, in
1914 America entered WWI. Then in 1920, women were given the right to vote and women s suffrage
was a big focus of the twenties (Unstend 6). Soon after in October of 1929, the Great Depression
followed, causing massive economic downfall to the United States. Families during that time were
very poor, but millions still went to watch films at local theaters (Unstend 12). One technological
advance was the first television which began in 1936 (Unstend 30). After the Great Depression hit,
WWII came shortly after and America entered the war on December 7, 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl
Harbor (Unstend 18). In 1945, the U.S. possessed the atomic bomb helping to protect the U.S

community were heavily valued, however it seems that each Cyclops wants nothing to do with the
others, revealing them as cultural outsiders who wouldn t be accepted among humanity. Additionally,
the brutes have no meeting place for council, no laws either. The Odyssey was written in the 8th
century BC, during the beginnings of Archaic Greece. City states were the popular form of
government and communal decision making started to gain value. In stark contrast to this form of
politics, the Cyclops made decisions for themselves, rarely communicating with anyone but their own
families. Their governmental actions stray far from the Greeks public standards. Perhaps the largest
difference between the Cyclops and any other Greek citizen though, is their religious difference. The

The Pros And Cons Of Students In Education
Unlike fully inclusive classrooms, fully exclusive classrooms limit students opportunities to be apart
of socially diverse environments. In his social experiment, Fryxell finds that when two groups of
students with severe disabilities are broken up into two groups where one is in general education
classrooms and the other is in self contained classrooms that, [S]tudents placed in [the] general
education [classrooms] ha[ve] higher levels of social contact with peers without disabilities; ...
students in general education receiv[e] higher levels of social support from others, as well as provid[e]
higher levels of social support; and ... those students hav[e] substantially larger friendship networks
composed primarily of peers without disabilities (Fryxell Placement along ). Additionally, Stevens and
Slavin observe that after a year of fully inclusive classes that, [H]andicapped students [are] more
accepted socially by their non handicapped peers than were similar students in traditional schools with
pull out remedial programs (Stevens and Slavin The Cooperative ). Socialization with mainstream
students is important to how students without disabilities view their peers who have them. The
University of Greenwich finds that students without disabilities who have not had a lot of experiences
regarding students with disabilities have stereotypic attitude[s]/judgments towards people with
disabilities based on the psychological and physical attributes (stereotypes) of groups

Pros And Cons Of Ecotourism
Abstract
Eco tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. It is a form of natural resources
based tourism focused on experiencing and learning about nature. The term ecotourism can be well
described with the following five criteria: nature conservation, low impact, sustainability, meaningful
community involvement, and environmental education. Environmental education must be fulfilled to
perform ecotourism and is the step towards the process of understanding the natural ecosystems.
Ecotourism has been growing rapidly over the last decades. Yet, while ecotourism has the potential to
create positive environmental and social impacts, it can unfortunately be as damaging as mass tourism
if not done properly.

Heavy traffic from environmentalists can hurt or destroy natural landscapes.
To promote ecotourism to improve their economy, the traffic can put these natural systems at risk.
Significantly altered by industrialization and the various hotels, roads, cars, and pollution that come
with it.
Forest and marine habitats are being destroyed and some of the wildlife they contain is being driven to
extinction under the pressures of hunting, logging, agriculture, and fishing. Where areas have been
officially reserved for nature conservation, many developing country governments lack sufficient
funds to manage and protect them. These areas are being destroyed because they are not fully valued
for their role as nature s genetic reservoirs of the world s biological resources. It is the major threat to
the rich biodiversity and natural habitats of the wilds in the jungles.
Competition for eco tourism income between the various groups leads to social disharmony. Increased

Sportsmanlike Behavior
Throughout my time as a high school student, I have learned the importance of sportsmanlike
behavior. While participating in athletic and academic programs, I have found that good
sportsmanship is what makes a good program and a good student athlete. It requires you to not only
look out for yourself but also to look out for the well being of others, both on your team and on the
opposing team. It is important to possess positive sportsmanship because you learn to care for and
help others regardless of differences, which is a quality that is beneficial in an academic setting,
athletics, and life as a whole.
During my high school career, I have demonstrated good sportsmanship while participating in various
extracurricular activities, such as the National Honor Society, diversity club, rocket cheerleading,
track, competitive cheer, and sideline cheer. The activity that allowed me to show my extreme
dedication and sportsmanship the most, was volunteering for rocket cheer. While participating in
rocket cheer, I had the opportunity to coach 1st graders on the different cheers ... Show more content

Their sportsmanlike behavior taught me that winning or earning an A in school isn t the most
important thing. The knowledge gained and memories made during the journey are more valuable than
whatever prize you may receive. I have found that this sportsmanlike frame of mind teaches you how
to respond to others in an empathetic manner. For example, in sports you are not always on the
winning side; when you are on the winning team you can still respond to people who lost in a
compassionate manner. Meanwhile, if you are on the losing side you can respond with happiness at
the success of others because you can acknowledge that something was still gained. It is also about
watching others succeed from your assistance and how you pass down what you have learned

Sermon On The Mount Essay
CHAPTER 1
SERMON ON THE MOUNT: GENERAL OUTLOOK
1.0 INTRODUCTION
In this chapter we are dealing with Sermon on the Mount in a general outlook. Here we will mainly
see the Sermon on the Mount in the gospel of Matthew, its connection with the Old Testament and the
New Testament setting of the Sermon on the Mount.
1.1 SERMON ON THE MOUNT IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
The Sermon on the Mount is recorded in the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh chapters of the Gospel
According to St. Matthew.
1.1.1 MATTHEW THE EVANGELIST
Tradition attributes the authorship of the first Gospel to the Apostle Matthew who sat under the tax
booth and followed Jesus (9:9f; 10:3). Today few hold the view that Matthew the tax collector is the
author of the Gospel. While this Matthew may have been an original source for the Gospel, the final
form as we now have it seems to be the work of a Gentile Christian who was well versed in the
Hebrews but who made enough mistakes.
It is some time difficult to state with exactness the authorship of ancient writings. The name Matthew
means gift of the Lord. Mark and Luke, in the story of his calling, name him Levi. Perhaps this was
his original name, and he received a new name from Jesus when he became a disciple. (It has also

The gospel has traditionally and popularly been known as the Jewish gospel, sometimes over against
Luke or John as the gentile gospel. The following facts illustrate that the gospel is written for Jewish
Christians. Matthew includes sayings from Q and M that stress the continuing validity of the law (Mt
5:17 48).His readers then were probably Jewish Christians for whom the Jewish law was relevant. He
shows interest on matters that are distinctively Jewish such as Sabbath, temple etc. Mathew does not
explain Jewish customs. Luke traces Jesus ancestry back to Adam, father of human race, Matthew
back to Abraham, father of Jewish

My Ability As A Writer Analysis
Personally, I believe that my overall ability as a writer is good because I love to draw out diagrams,
supporting details, and my ability to relate to the reader is some of my assets, although, some of my
liabilities include; coming up with a thesis statement, edit/revising my papers, and word
choice/vocabulary. As a student, it is hard to come up with and think about your assets and liabilities
or what a good writer is and what a bad writer is, or maybe we all just think we are bad writers
because we are so good at criticizing ourselves and not getting other opinions on how we are as a
writer. Thinking of my assets was one of the hardest things I have had to do when it comes to writing
because I have never had to think about what helps make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most of the time I procrastinate so badly that I rush to write my paper and turn it in without even
looking over it myself. So, little petty mistakes that could have easily been fixed were not able to be,
because I did not edit or revise my papers. If I would have just given myself a little more time in high
school to write my papers and go over them, or even have someone edit it, I could have done better on
the good papers and good on the not so good papers. That is something that I want to really work on

Proper Timing And Placement Of Fertilizer
Proper timing and placement of fertilizer, development of more efficient crop varieties, and proper
irrigation are among some of the other solutions to improve the efficiency of nitrogen uptake
(Robertson Vitousek, 2009). Considering the widespread use of fertilizers and huge area of arable land
in use, one particularly promising solution seems to be the use of fertilizers coated with nitrification
inhibitors. A study measuring the effect of dicyandiamide (DCD), which limits the conversion of
NH4+ to NO3 , on a grazed pasture demonstrated a 68 percent reduction in nitrate leaching as a result
of its application (Di Cameron, 2005). In addition to nitrogen releases, agricultural activities
contribute significant amounts of carbon dioxide and methane to the environment, both of which are
GHGs. Within this sector, methane enters the atmosphere mainly through enteric fermentation by
ruminants, manure, and rice paddies. Without taking into account emissions from fossil fuel use,
agriculture is responsible for about one third of global net carbon dioxide emissions as a result of
deforestation, burning of biomass, and draining of wetlands (Johnson, Franzluebbers, Weyers,
Reicosky, 2007). Carbon dioxide emissions associated with fossil fuels on the farm are mostly due to
diesel combustion from machinery used for planting, tilling, and fertilizer and pesticide application.
Production and transportation of agricultural inputs should also be considered to account for

Money Laundering
Throughout history, America and other global economies have consistently battled for equality and
fairness in their country. Many new legislations and laws have been implemented and added
throughout the years to adapt to the new technological advances each market has encountered. Even
so, the question of ethics has been raised weighing whether or not each new law meets the ethics in
business and morality. One important obstacle that is still at the forefront of new legislation and posed
for ethical evaluation is money laundering. Money laundering has survived the years through
questions of morality and lawfulness by adapting to rigorous restraints and finding new ways to
manifest itself in different segmentation forms of trade. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His beliefs are opposite of the general population. His overall view is that money laundering is not a
major crime and that we have imposed a form of double jeopardy for those violating these particular
crimes. He also believes that we should lessen the consequences because he believes they are not
linked to other crimes. Many illegal activities have been encouraged with money laundering. It is
much easier on our government to find perpetrators if money laundering was absolved. By money
laundering being absolved, our government would pick up on traffickers easier because they would
have no way of accounting for their large and unexplainable income. With our government having
specialty government services like the Internal Revenue Service, drug traffickers would be detected
faster because of unexplained purchases that are higher than their recorded yearly income. Once that
occurs the government would be able to isolate large expenditures that traffickers usually use their
funds for. Some examples would be lavish vehicles, extravagant personal residences and large
investments. To combat money laundering, FAFT issued the 40 Recommendations in 1990 and revised

There Are Several Practices That Uber Can Adopt In Order
There are several practices that Uber can adopt in order to manage employee performance. Some
practices include social recognition and related positive reinforcement. Social recognition and positive
reinforcement consists of challenging employees and providing ample encouragement to motivate
those employees to continue to learn and to improve in the workplace. In order for Uber to encourage
employee engagement and employee performance they must express appreciation to their employees
in front of others. I believe positive reinforcement to be one of the most crucial steps in achieving an
environment that fosters employee engagement and in turn higher performance. Uber could also use
benefit packages to encourage employee performance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to accomplish a better understanding of what compensation policy will align with the
company s strategic aim, Uber must have a good understanding of the basic factors that determine pay
rates such as productivity and union influence. Uber must also use job evaluation methods such as
using a market based approach, market competitive pay plan, point method, wage curves, wage
structure and rate ranges, job classification, and even computerized job evaluations. Uber could also
use ranking as a job evaluation method which revolves around obtaining job information, selecting
and grouping jobs, then rank those jobs, and combine the ratings. A grade level example of job
evaluation evaluates completed work for conformance to policy; guidelines, such as regulations,
precedent cases, and policy statements that require considerable interpretation and adaptation. (Gary
Dessler) I believe that in order to achieve a compensation policy that aligns with the strategic aim of
the company, the best practices for Uber would be to adopt a competency based pay model that
evaluates employees based on their productivity. I believe that this will also increase employee
engagement overall, which leads the company as a whole to support the strategic aim. Benefits are an
extremely crucial part of an employees contract with a company. If Uber wants to be successful in
their expansion across the world, they must be able to provide the

A STEM education is a necessity in the United States because the country is lacking knowledgeable
people in such fields. However, one is better equipped for multiple job and career positions with the
addition of a liberal arts education. It is nearly impossible to transition to different careers with only
vocational training. In 2003, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development studied
math and science literacy among fifteen year olds. The United States was ranked number twenty four
in math literacy (Drew 27). They are behind countries such as Finland, Slovak Republic, and Hungary.
Likewise, the United States was ranked number nineteen in science literacy (Drew 27). It is obvious
that the country is behind. STEM education needs to be reformed at the secondary and post secondary
levels of schooling. Katrina Trinko, a member of USA TODAY s Board of Contributors, agrees that
more emphasis should be placed on STEM education; however, this emphasis should not be at the
sacrifice of a good liberal arts education. She writes, Even technology wizards can become more
innovative with a solid background in liberal arts (Trinko 6). A liberal arts education is beneficial to
people in all career fields.
Jeffrey Mervis interviewed educators about their efforts to improve undergraduate STEM education.

Malpractice Law
If you suspect that you or someone you love has been adversely affected by the medical profession,
you will have many questions. Depending on the severity of the issue and what has occurred, you may
need the services of a medical malpractice lawyer. Making the decision to contact a malpractice
lawyer can be a difficult one; you might not feel as though you have enough cause or you might feel
that you ll be wasting your time and money. A little bit of knowledge about what malpractice lawyers
cover and what you should be looking for can help you a great deal though, when faced with a
situation like this. While many malpractice lawyers offer free consultations, there are a few things that
most if not all professionals in this field will consider a legitimate grievance. Birth injuries, especially

Inquire as to the lawyer s win ratio, and see if he has significant in court experience. A trial attorney
will have a much better chance of winning a case if he has some experience, and it is important to
remember that the burden of proof is upon you to prove that the doctor s actions or hospital s actions
should be questioned. Another thing to keep in mind is the fees for the lawyer s service. Find out
exactly how much you need to pay in your lawyer s fees if you do not get the settlement you expect. If
the case succeeds, how much will your lawyer receive? These are all concerns that you need to keep in
mind when selecting a malpractice lawyer. When selecting a malpractice lawyer, make sure that you
are comfortable working with him. This can be a very traumatic time in your life and having the
feeling that you have someone who is solidly on your side is important. If you think you need the
services of a malpractice lawyer, start searching as soon as possible, and find someone that you

  • 2. Gandalf As An Epic Hero Gandalf The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. Felix Adler Although it is accurate, rarely has the epithet epic hero been used to describe Gandalf the Wizard. Epic heroes are easily recognizable throughout History textbooks and simple searches via Google, but many people just cannot put a finger on what exactly is an epic hero. The criteria is simple to say, yet difficult to accomplish; do a tremendous deed or disservice and be identified by a well known or well established piece of writing or section of History. In The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf embodies the characteristics of an epic hero, such as traveling vast distances, battling supernatural foes, and having humility. Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Gandalf; in their time, these four figures traveled over vast distances. Hannibal through Italy, Caesar through Gaul, Napoleon through Europe, and Gandalf through Middle earth. However, Gandalf did not just travel the span of Middle earth, but the span of life and death. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf is pulled into a dark chasm by a Luciferic creature, a chasm that has a symbolic meaning. He lands and defeats the Balrog on a snowy mountaintop, but death creeps up on him, until it finally takes him over. Gandalf then began a separate journey, one that took him away from life and entered the unknown. As the stars wheeled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The New Orleans Jazz And Music I got the chance to attend the Jazzy Stars late concert at the Acme Lounge in the Arts and Entertainment district in Miami, Florida. The band that performed was called Lemon City Trio. Lemon City Trio has three bands members that go by the names Brian Robertson, Nick Tannura, and Aaron Glueckauf. I could connect to their music because their music included genre sounds that I listen to on an everyday basis. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last cover was a song by Al Green called I m Still in Love With You . The dynamics for this song was interesting to me. They alternated from crescendos and decrescendos throughout this song, which made the song a little bit more interesting. Everyone had a solo in this song. The organ player s solo was the best one to me because he played so fast at times even though the tempo of this song was mostly slow. This was my least favorite song of the set because I felt as though this song had more minor keys than major keys. The remaining songs in the concerts were original songs that the band wrote and songs that were coming out on their debut EP. The first original song played was the song Same Old Thing . This song had a polyphonic texture between the guitar and the piano and had a fast tempo. One of the motifs in this song was very catchy and was repeated a couple times. This song was short and had a steady rhythm. The dynamics of this song were good because the tones were not too soft or too loud. The melody had a bright and warm mood that matched the atmosphere of the club. All the instruments blended beautifully which resulted in a great harmony. I felt like the drumming on this song made the song complete. The timbre in the song Flying Free was bright and had a smooth flow. I liked how the melody repeated a couple times in this song. • 4. Struggles of Lower Class Students in Learning in the... bell hooks is successful in delivering her message in article Learning in the Shadow of Race and Class because she gives examples of herself as well as examples of other students who she has known. She argues that lower class students were ignored by their teachers and peers. Although, few sentences and paragraphs in her article are not as effective as the whole article, still reading it is interesting. In her essay, hooks defends poor people who have been ignored by white people at school. She also explains her situation when she was studying. She defends poor people, which is what most of the good writers are doing in order to let their readers know that they are not thinking about getting money or anything like that. hooks is an effective writer through the use of persuasive examples and emotional appeals. In her essay, hooks gives many examples about herself and others, about how it feels to be alone, and poor. That makes her believable. And these examples improved her essay. She says that she stopped thinking about having money and everything else but the education. She talks about a girl who never gave up studying, despite some problems she encountered. She talked about specific friends of hers, for example, Like my friend during freshmen year, she shared the understanding of what it was like to be a have not in a world of haves. hooks expresses how difficult it was when she was in San Francisco, and people around her spoke a language she did not understand. ... Discourse Community Analysis Essay example The Journey of A Successful Soccer Player In order to be accepted into a discourse community, a person must learn typical ways people in that community communicate and argue. In this paper I will prove that I entered the discourse community of my high school soccer team by acquiring knowledge, establishing my credibility, and learning the game I love. In other words, I will be using the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals. I love to play soccer and watch the professionals who play on TV. This topic fits into the Supreme Court s responsibility of interpreting the Constitution to resolve public disputes. Scalia argued that non originalism is incompatible with judicial review of constitutionality because it allows an expansion of contemporary freedoms. In other words, non originalist theory allows judges to incorporate current societal values in their decisions with a limited consideration to the original intent of the Constitution. • 8. Essay on The Tell Tale Heart The Insane Killer One of Edgar Allan Poe s most terrifying tales is The Tell Tale Heart . Poe s life was tragic because many of the women that Edgar Allan Poe loved very much had died of tuberculosis his mother, his foster mother, his wife Virginia, and the men in his life kept abandoning him, so that made him dark and depressed. That darkness shows in a lot of his stories, including this one. The Tell Tale Heart is a story about a murder the narrator commits. He kills an old man because the old man s vulture eye makes him furious and annoyed. The narrator of The Tell Tale Heart is insane because he murdered the old man without a motive and because he was so paranoid in his actions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even taking 5 minutes to stick a head inside a room is too long, but 1 hour that s totally crazy and a big sign of a neurotic person. Was it possible they heard not? Almighty God! no, no! screams the narrator as they are sitting in the old man s room with the police officers. They heard! they suspected! they knew! they were making a mockery of my horror! this I thought and this I think. This shows that the narrator is obsessed with the old man s heart because he keeps on hearing it, even though that s probably just his dirty conscience. It also shows that he is paranoid about the officers hearing the heartbeat, even though it s impossible and they obviously don t, because they don t start looking around or asking any questions, which they would have done if they really did hear the heartbeat. The narrator in the story is insane because he murders an old man without any motive and is really paranoid. I believe that Edgar Allan Poe is trying to tell us in this story that we shouldn t let our thoughts and feelings bottle up, because eventually we ll do something insane, like the narrator did. He bottled everything up inside of himself, which led to the murder of an innocent person. We should let those thoughts and feelings out so we wouldn t explode and, for example, kill someone. • 10. The Water Systems At Bulls Creek, Wild Basin, And Mckinney... Our study determined how detrimental pet activity is on the environment, more specifically the water systems at Bulls Creek, Wild Basin, and McKinney Falls. My hypothesis was the if there is human and pet activity near water ways, there will be an increase in algae boom and chlorophyll a concentration because bacteria body material, and feces of the dog affects the water s health. Our results did not agree with our hypothesis because Chlorophyll a concentration was higher at McKinney Falls, where there was the most pet activity, and lower at Bulls Creek, even though pets were allowed also. Additionally, the Wild Basin, where there were no pets allowed, had samples with an unexpectedly high chlorophyll a concentration compared to the samples from Bulls Creek. Other factors including canopy cover, and urban runoff could have also altered water quality. I infer that the water quality was affected more by other factors. The two sites with about the same amount of human activity were McKinney Falls State Park and Bulls Creek. On the other hand, Wild Basin swimming is not allowed. Our results showed that the order from greatest to least amount of nitrate and phosphorous concentration was Bulls Creek, McKinney Falls, and Wild Basin at the lowest. • 11. Persuasive Essay On Decriminalizing All Drugs We all have an interest in making sure teens grow up healthy and drug free. John Walters Would you like to live in a safer, drug free community? I do and here is how to start: by decriminalizing all drugs! Since Richard Nixon coined the phrase War on Drugs in 1971, America has failed miserably to reduce the consumption and traffic of illicit drugs from outside our borders. Although a heavy portion are against decriminalizing drugs because of short term consequences and health concerns in public communities, Portugal s evident sixteen year experience with drug decriminalization has proven otherwise with significant, long term positive outcomes. However, due to the long lasting and persuasive positive outcomes of decriminalization, it is vital that the U.S. strongly reconsiders the prohibition of all drugs for the health and economic benefit of our communities. Obviously, there will be short term consequences but also benefits too. Unfortunately, the hype of decriminalizing drugs will cause an increase in the number of users but it is important to note that a considerable amount of those being newly documented are closet junkies finally being revealed. As Dr. Caitlin Hughes, a member of the Drug Policy Modelling Program of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre puts it, Portuguese decriminalization did not lead to major increases in drug use. Indeed, evidence indicates reductions in problematic use, drug related harms and criminal justice overcrowding (Hughes; Stevens). As this research shows, the predictions on Portugal s well being after the decriminalization of all drugs were incorrect and the complete opposite occurred creating healthy and safer communities because of awareness. Bringing our attention back to the increasing number of users within the hype years, public safety is a large concern where communities will have a difficult time adapting to the new policy and becoming accustomed to a new culture and lifestyle. On the contrary, I find a few years of craziness to be minimal in comparison to the long term achievement that this law intends to achieve. Portugal has proved that decriminalization reduces drug use, drug related harms, and criminal justice overcrowding. João Goulão, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While it is true that Shelley was trapped within some of the conventions of her time, she was also a strong woman and a brilliant author. While she wrote Frankenstein from a male perspective and incorporated female stereotypes, there are examples that show Shelley was well aware of the unjust separation of the masculine and the feminine in her time. It can be argued that the downfall of many of the characters can be attributed to this very separation. In other words Mary Shelley subtly commented on the conventions of her time with the positions of her characters in the world and their eventual fates (Mellor, 116). In her novel, she has Elizabeth regret that she had not [had] the same opportunities of enlarging her experience and cultivating her understanding as Victor Frankenstein (Shelley, 151). Most notably there is the monster, who is portrayed as an emotional being, misunderstood because of his appearance. Despite his exterior, Shelley portrays him as an intelligent and noble creature. One might argue that there is a paralel between the monster s oppression and that of women in Shelley s time. In the book, however, the monster is free to express his anger at the oppression and the hatred he has experienced, something women were largely unable to do. The purpose of advertisements is to persuade their audience into buying their product or getting a message across. Without advertisements, companies would not be able to develop in their competitive business. The mutual purpose of both advertisements is to induce consumers into screening the specific broadcasting network coverage of the games. Channel 4 s campaign is primarily composed of athletes from the United Kingdom, whereas the athletes in the BBC s campaign are distinct from specific nations. Hence it can be distinguished that the intended target audience for the two texts is the general public of the United Kingdom by analysing the context within the two visual texts. BBC s advertisement has achieved its audience by the presence of dramatic music and animations which resembled participation in events with passion and energetic performance. Inversely, Channel 4 has freshly introduced Paralympics to gain its popularity and viewers as it is very miniature compared with the Olympics. The quote makes the image of her and Winn Dixie s lives very lonely and sad. This makes me think she has no one to talk to and that her father is just there. Why doesn t she count her father as family? The image makes it look like her father is not emotionally connected to her and she need more love in her life. The reason why I can connect and relate to the book is because I only have a mother. I grew up in a single parent household. My father pasted away when I was Twelve years old. I didn t even know my father that well even in those Twelve years. I can relate with Opal not being able to recall anything about a parent. • 16. Biological Determinism Vs Differential Socialization There are two schools of thought involved in the historical debate about gender and its manifestation in our society: biological determinism and differential socialization (Kimmel, 2013, p.2). Despite the fact that both schools make reference to gender inequality, it is important to remark that while for determinists this one is directly linked to people s innate biological traits, for sociologists, inequality is learned through the process of socialization. On one hand, determinism sets its foundations in biology and a binary expression of sex (male and female), and states that men and women have inherited different capacities and adaptations. Determinists believe that since the moment people are born, they are predisposed by their genes, hormonal, and physically capacities to act in the world as either a men or a woman. Therefore, they argue that the inequality, or superiority of one sex over the other (in this case masculinity superiority), is a key factor (a necessity) for our society to function properly (Kimmel, 2013). Thus, individuals are more than the expression of their biological sex, they are part of groups and these groups exert a great influence in their everyday decisions (Kimmel, 2013). In this case, gender inequality is learned during the process of socialization. For instance, we tend to learn how to act (gender roles) from the different norms in society. Supporting this idea, I noticed how at school, boys and girls tend to be organized in two separate groups to play sports. One such definition comes from Hugh of St. Victor, who piggybacked off of Augustine of Hippo s definition. Hugh s definition is much more clear cut on the parameters of the definition: it must include a physical element, it must bear a likeness to what it signifies, there must be a good reason for it to represent a spiritual reality, and it must be capable of bestowing the benefits that it signifies to the person. • 20. The Great Depression The only thing we have to fear is fear itself, is a famous quote once said during the Great Depression by Franklin D. Roosevelt. After one world war, great financial fallout, and another world war to follow, the twentieth century was already shaping out to be a handful. When the Great Depression was coming to an end and the economy was trying to turn around, jobs started opening up and a new wave of immigrants came into New York, the Puerto Ricans. For some the American dream was to come to America and start a new life, but for others already here, it was about making it big in show business. West Side Story , a twentieth century musical, was greatly influenced by the immigration during that time. Before West Side Story was written, there were some major events that occurred. For instance, in 1914 America entered WWI. Then in 1920, women were given the right to vote and women s suffrage was a big focus of the twenties (Unstend 6). Soon after in October of 1929, the Great Depression followed, causing massive economic downfall to the United States. Families during that time were very poor, but millions still went to watch films at local theaters (Unstend 12). One technological advance was the first television which began in 1936 (Unstend 30). After the Great Depression hit, WWII came shortly after and America entered the war on December 7, 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (Unstend 18). Cultural Beliefs In The Odyssey By Beowulf In The Odyssey, the Cyclops symbolizes cultural values straying from the norm of society, while in Beowulf, Grendel symbolizes the consequences of not conforming to those values. In The Odyssey, Homer uses the Cyclops to encapsulate values which are considered abnormal in everyday society. The beasts are culturally, politically and religiously detached from civilization. Homer describes the one eyed beasts, They have no meeting place for council, no laws either, no, up on the mountain peaks they live in arching caverns each a law to himself, ruling his wives and children, not a care in the world for any neighbor (9.125 128) In ancient greek society family and community were heavily valued, however it seems that each Cyclops wants nothing to do with the others, revealing them as cultural outsiders who wouldn t be accepted among humanity. Additionally, the brutes have no meeting place for council, no laws either. The Odyssey was written in the 8th century BC, during the beginnings of Archaic Greece. City states were the popular form of government and communal decision making started to gain value. In stark contrast to this form of politics, the Cyclops made decisions for themselves, rarely communicating with anyone but their own families. Their governmental actions stray far from the Greeks public standards. Perhaps the largest difference between the Cyclops and any other Greek citizen though, is their religious difference. Considering the widespread use of fertilizers and huge area of arable land in use, one particularly promising solution seems to be the use of fertilizers coated with nitrification inhibitors. A study measuring the effect of dicyandiamide (DCD), which limits the conversion of NH4+ to NO3 , on a grazed pasture demonstrated a 68 percent reduction in nitrate leaching as a result of its application (Di Cameron, 2005).
