Short-Term Memory Experience
The class was asked to do experiments on five different people who I know. We were asked to
test their short term memory. I thought it would be easy for my subjects to remember just 10
words. I wanted to see if age or education can change their short term memory outcome. On TV,
there is a reality game show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader , well my son is in the fifth
grade. We sat at the kitchen table, I read aloud the words that were on the high value list. Then I
asked him to write the words that he could remember me saying. Then an hour later, I did the
next set of 10 words from the medium value list, then the low value list of words an hour or so
after. With my husband, I did the same thing has I did with my son. We sat at the table

I asked a friend of mine that has a master s in education and is a principal of a middle school if
she could help with this experiment. I wanted to see if having a lot of education would be
different than not having it. We couldn t get together in person, but we did do it over Skype. I
wanted to make sure that I could watch her and see how she reacted on the 3 sets of words. The
first and second set of words we did within an hour and ВЅ of each other. The last set of words we
couldn t do till the following day. With my mom, we had to spread it out within two days. She
came to my house on the first day and I read the first and second set of words within 45 minutes
of each other. The last set of words, I went to her house thinking that maybe being at a different
place more comfortable for her, would change the outcome. The last person I tested is a very
close friend of mine. I invited him over for dinner without him knowing that he was a guinea pig
in my experiment. I asked him to remember the first set of words and to write down all the words
that he could remember before dinner. Then I read aloud the second set of words after dinner.
Thinking that maybe having a full belly would change the way your mind works. Then we

Blek s Graffiti Art
A tag is the most basic writing of an artist s name; it is a form of which an artist gain recognition.
A graffiti writer s tag is his or her personalized signature. Graffiti is more destructive, they use
aerosol, hard to read and they usually do it at night. Street art use different mode of paintings,
they do it in broad daylight and it is more acceptable by the community. The artist are treated
differently depending on the type of art they are showing. If the art is more acceptable by the
people around, then they are praised by their work. Usually the defining factor on whether or not
Graffitiart is considered legal is based on permission. This is not a universal rule and every city
will have its own process for determining where and what type of Graffiti art is acceptable. There
is a basic idea or feeling that a highly tagged neighborhood has been overrun by criminals or street
gangs or that it is simply an area of a city that is not worth caring about.
Arts is very powerful tool that can change the way we view towards our society and it is more
powerful than words itself; it gives us a sense of awareness, it affect our way of thinking by
sending us messages that we never thought before and it is more often used as a political
commentary. It can change the world by using it as a form of mass communication to our society.

When an art leaves the street and present it in galleries then it is a different scenario due to the
fact that the audience (which includes rich and influential people) are limited and most ordinary
people don t have time and money to watch the show, then I could say that it lose its power to
impact most people in the society. Art maybe considered as a weapon that could influenced your
mind and change how you look at something, depending on the message it is showing you, it can
either be good or bad

Character Analysis Of Rent
The musical Rent was first produced in 1994 by Jonathan Larson and is loosely based on the
opera La Boheme (1896) by Giacomo Puccini. This rock opera production tells the story of the
lives of 8 bohemians living in Manhattan for a year. Many of the characters in Rent are pulled
directly from Puccini s La BohГЁme. There are 8 main characters the story follows; Roger Davis, a
musician who is HIV positive, Mimi MГЎrquez, an exotic dancer and Roger s girlfriend, Mark
Cohen, a Jewish filmmaker who is Roger s roommate, Maureen Johnson, a bisexual performance
artist, Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer who is Maureen s girlfriend, Tom Collins, a gay part time
philosophy professor at New York University with AIDS. Angel Dumott Schunard, a drag queen
who is Collins partner, and Benjamin Benny Coffin III, their landlord and the former roommate
of Roger, Mark, Collins, and Maureen. The plot of Rent borrows heavily from its predecessor.
La Boheme was also based on young artists and free thinkers, and these characters were afflicted
with the plague of the time period, tuberculosis. Similarly, in Rent the artists are all affected in
some way by the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the 1990s. The story highlights the two roommates
Mark and Roger. A former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, and Mark tries to capture the ups
and downs of his friend s lives on tape through his attempts to make a film.
The beginning of the film opens up to the main characters struggling to make their rent. The rest of

A Structural and Vocabulary Analysis of John Donne s The Flea
In his poem The Flea , John Donne shows his mastery in creating a work in which the form and
the vocabulary have deliberately overlapping significance. The poem can be analyzed for the
prominence of threes that form layers of multiple meanings within its three stanzas. In each of the
three stanzas, key words can be examined to show (through the use of the OED) how Donne
brilliantly chose them because of the various connotations they had to his audience. Finally, each of
the three stanzas contains completely different moods that reflect the speaker s emotions as the
situation changes.
Upon knowing some of John Donne s personal history, especially of his eventual high ... Show more

According to the OED, anything that caused surprise or alarm was referred to as a flea. Another
common usage for the word flea was as an adjective. Something was like a flea if it was small
and contemptible. The third relevance was as a popular phrase saying that there was a flea in
one s ear. The OED definition of this saying is, stinging or mortifying reproof, rebuff, or repulse,
which sends one away discomfited. It is easy to see the evolution of the word flea to the verb, to
flee.
The second stanza can be summed up by the word jet. Jet also has several layers of meaning.
Donne writes, Though parents grudge, and you, we are met,/
And cloistered in these living walls of jet. The speaker is trying to convince a lady to have an
illicit tryst with him, and this line shows that he is being sneaky and sly because they are
somewhere dark and secretive. Jet literally means black and shiny, just like a flea, but according
to the OED, it also represents an action. A jet is a sudden, darting movement and the speaker
actually makes a jet towards the lady. It is in this stanza that he makes his most ambitious
argument to the lady, and because this is obviously a sexual proposition, Donne s clever word
selection reveals why the third meaning of jet is especially relevant. Jet also has a phallic/male
connotation as the root of the word jetty (an outcropping of rocks

A High Point Of Japanese Aristocratic Culture
A high point of Japanese aristocratic culture, the Heian period was a time of significant
intellectual and cultural growth. It is during this time that women came to have a very important
role in the social and interpersonal workings of the court. Though there were still many
restrictions upon them, women were able to express themselves as never before and faced a
surprising degree of freedom and autonomy in a society that was defined by an immense amount
of rigid formalities. One of the things I found to be most interesting from my findings were the
power structures that developed within the court of Empress Fujiwara No Shoshi. Women as well
as men not only exerted influence within the court but also developed pecking orders as well.
Though, today, we have a rough idea of what this pecking order may have looked like with the
Empress at the top followed by imperial consorts and the Empresses ladies in waiting, there appears
to be no official documented hierarchal structure. Yet, although their may be no official
documentation of this structure, evidence of these power structures can be found in the memoirs
and works of women of the time, including Murasaki Shikibuand Sei Shonagon. In a society where
one was defined almost entirely by their social standing, earning the title of Lady in Waiting was an
extremely sought after goal. Although the title most certainly provided women within the court
certain privileges over others, it also came with a great deal of anxiety and

Genetic Testing Persuasive Essay
What would you do if an immediate family member of yours developed a popular genetic
disease and there was a possibility of you having it? Wouldn t you want to know whether or not
you had it as well, in your genes? Genetic testing allows for people to know if they have a certain
genetic disease, if they need to get a certain treatment plan set up, or if there are ways to prevent
it from becoming present or visible in the body. Genetic Discrimination is no longer legally
allowed, meaning that there is no longer a need to fear the possibility of your genetic information
getting into the wrong hands. Genetic testing should be done by anyone who may have a chance of
developing any type of disease that could be life threatening or not. Genetic... Show more content

Although it is greatly feared that your genetic information will get in the hands of the wrong
person, it is now protected by the law. Genetic Discrimination is no longer allowed because both
federal and state laws have been made against allowing employers and insurance agents to
discriminate you based on a genetic disease you may have. These laws are part of the GINA
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. There are two titles within GINA, Title One
prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Health Insurance and Title Two prohibits Genetic
Discrimination in Employment. Others may argue that genetic testing is unreliable and does not
work to detect genetic diseases in all parts of the body. Among the variety of genetic tests, some
yield high rates of false positive and false negative results, while others are characterized by
findings that are precise but of uncertain clinical or predictive value (1998, Hastings Center
Report, 15 21). Although that may be true, there can be tests done in other parts of the body to get
better results instead of the false results. Taking blood from another location in the body will allow
the patient to get the true positive or negative that they need to tell if they have the

An Experiment On How Fast The Pressure Generated By The...
Shapiro and Dinske(2009) stated that this equation could enable geoscientists to know how fast
the pressure generated by the introduction of fluid is travelling into the rocks to be broken.
Meanwhile, this equation can only be applied to a homogenous, isotropic medium but in real life,
geologic media are hydraulically heterogeneous. For this case, times greater than t0(time at
beginning) are considered because if the injection stops at t0, the earthquakes and tremors will
gradually cease to occur. These times (t) also describe the propagation of a maximal pore pressure
perturbation in the space. The surface here separates the domain which is still active from the
spatial domain which was already active which yields the back front of... Show more content on

Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015) stated that seismic events occur in rock sections with high Young
s Modulus and low Poisson s ratio. Young s modulus refers to the ratio of amount of stress to strain
while Poisson s ratio is the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain. They stated that a significant
amount of rock stress originated from elastic rock heterogeneity, and that the heterogeneity index of
rocks indicates these rock sections. Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015) concluded that seismicity
induced by fluid injection can be of two ways. One is by the shear reactivation which explains the
linear diffusion seismicity explained previously and the other is by tensile opening which only
occurs when the minimum effective stress becomes tensile. The reactivation probability of a
preexisting fracture is given by CFS calculation which involves cohesion, shear and normal stress,
coefficient of internal friction and pore pressure. If CFS is greater than 0, the fault is in a stable
state; if CFS is less than 0, the fault is unstable and if CFS is equal to 0, failure occurs. According
to Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015), a test was conducted where only the friction coefficient and
cohesion were kept constant while the other parameters were altered. This was done because there
is no direct measurement for

When Brian left to go to see his dad it was going good untill Brian looked over and saw that the
pilot was having troubles with himself. Brian did not seem the problems were serious, so he just

Pietas In Aeneas In The Aeneid
Before Augustus reign began, civil war had ravished the basic principles of the Roman people.
Faction had undermined pietas, the basis of Roman culture and as Cicero defines it, that which
warns us to fulfil our duties towards our country, our parents, or others connected with us by ties of
blood (De Inventione II). The duty towards country, parents and relatives was less of a bond
because faction determined duty rather that pietas. Therefore Rome, a city founded in pietas, was
that foundational principle. Internal faction undermined the principles of pietas and corrupted its
role in the city. Rome required a moral reform of pietas; it needed pietas to refocus the roots of the
city. Commissioned by Augustus, Virgil fashions the Aeneid
in order to portray the necessity of
pietas. Virgil compares his work to Homer s and with each comparison of Aeneaswith another
Greek hero, he emphasises the pietas within Aeneas. By thus combining the heroism many Greek
heroes into Aeneas, Virgil redefines Greek epic heroism to include pietas. By doing this, Virgil
shows that Rome s unification through pietas harnesses her power. Thus, Virgil unveils to the
Romans a virtue which allows each individual Roman citizen embody and partake in the glory of
Rome. Paris, the antagonist of the Trojan war, embodies and reflects Troy s lack of pietas. When
Paris stole Helen, he was Menelaus guest and under the ancient code of hospitality. However, the
abduction of Helen went further than breaking an

Perhaps four variables that would be assessed: a.) new technology developed to monitor and

The well formulated hypothesis will provide the vision of where the research may be directed, as
well as the problem, theory, or perhaps just a need to understand something. Moreover, the
hypothesis aids in identifying e.g. objective, abstract concepts, and relationships. Furthermore, the
research question may additionally be referenced as being either deductive or inductive. Although
both deductive and inductive are associative in its use of a hypothesis, the focus is different for
both. Below are examples of a null and an alternative hypothesis.
Null hypothesis
What is the difference in the growth of reading ability when students use technology as opposed to
reading books?
Alternative hypothesis
What component or components that increased the effect of the reading ability?
However, the researcher in this complex situation may find it conducive to use correlation.
Correlation permits the researcher to identify between relative variables within the project of

The first dimension would consist of the company s products; ice cream, frozen yogurt or

able to take advantage of the opportunity to sell the shirts. The second dimensionwould consist of

The Four Layers Of The Respiratory System
The respiratory system is made up of two different parts, the upper respiratory tract which includes
the nose, mouth and the beginning on the trachea. This is the part that is in charge of taking in the
air and letting it back out again, and then the lower respiratory tract which is made up of the trachea
and the lungs.
There are four different layers that make up the trachea, these include the mucosa which is the in
most layer. This consists of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium tissue which contains
goblet cells that secrete a tacky mucus that lines the walls of the inner trachea so that it catches any
debris breathed in via the air before it hits the lungs.

The Things They Carried by Tim OВґBrien
Tim O Brien wants the reader to feel what he felt going through this nightmare. The device he
uses is imagery and this is important because the reader can feel like they are a part of the war.
He gives an account of the nightmare : His entrenching tool like an ax, slashing. I can imagine
an angry lumber jack cutting deep into tree, which in his case represented his emotional feelings
for the love he had for Martha. Martha was a young, beautiful girl with whom he was so in love,
but Martha only saw Lieutenant Cross as a good friend. When you are trying to understand the
emotions of a person is difficult because you are never in their shoes. O Brien writes, He sat at
the bottom of his fox hole and wept. I imagine a baby crawling back into the womb inside his
mother stomach and he weeping like a baby. This image seems as if he was hiding from
something for which he was not ready / that he feared or appeared unprepared. The novelitself is a
flashback to the pass of a nightmare that he will never forget. O Brien is still alive, I cannot
imagine having flash backs to the past and being reminded of a frightening nightmare. The best
flashback in the novel reads his right arm was gone... At his face there were already many flies
and gnats. O Brien then revisits his childhood: Linda was nine then, as I was, but we were in
love.... she died of course. Nine years old and she died. This situation in the time of warbrought him

Defining Change Essay
Defining Change
Change can be defined as an event that occurs when something passes from one state or phase to
another, the result of alteration or modification, to lay aside, abandon, or leave for another,
become different in essence; to lose one s or its original nature, to make different; cause a
transformation, or to make or become different in some particular way, without permanently losing
one s or its former characteristics or essence. There are many different views as to the complexity
of change. Some may believe change is an illusion and nothing ever really changes. However, the
majority, such as the post structuralism theorists, believe that change is inevitable. Change can be

Also, our political world would not be the same. How would we advance in our associations with
other countries, if not for the effects of change? Our government, our laws, our beliefs would not
have changed from those of our early ancestors. Hence, it is visible that without change our society
would be stuck in a rut with no way to advance and improve.
Roland Barthes was interested in the way that signifiers words which are derived of meaning
unless associated with an image or object were related to each other (intertextuality) and the way
they reflect the context and culture from which they came. He believed that no text can stand alone
as an isolated work. Rather they echo and reflect each other. Thus, he said, we should never do
author centered studies and wrote of the Death of the Author . Rather, he stated that we should look
at a text in its relation to other texts. Barthes ideas led to Post structuralism.
Structuralists believed that meaning in literature could be determined by studying the language
structures the signs or signifiers which represented ideas within a particular culture e.g. white as a
sign or symbol of purity or innocence. Post Structuralists, however, argued that meaning can never
be fully understood because the cultural ideas represented by those signs are themselves
constructed by a society rather than

Ostensibly written for Syd s then girlfriend Jenny Spires, we take a quixotic notion that the song
references, if not deliberately, then synchronistically, the first self administered dose of LSD.
In 1943, inventor of LSD Albert Hoffman intentionally ingested 250 micrograms of LSD to

SUNY New Paltz Reflection
Since coming to SUNY New Paltz this past fall, I have taken a rigorous course load and have
fallen in love with my major. I have met beneficial professors and friends that I will value
throughout my life. Most of all I have learned about who I am and how I see my future
progressing. After attending SUNY New Paltz, I have learned that this institution isn t inadequate;
it is simply not the right fit for me. Early on in my collegeexperience, I had a strong feeling that this
schoolwas not the right match. This sense that I had, led to an internal struggle. I did not want to
be the student who came home after one year. I believed the right thing to do was to make it
through these unsatisfying four years. With this in mind, after giving this school a full year, I
realized I shouldn t have to make it through . I need to be at an institution that is compatible to me...

It is something I have always had a passion for. Whether I excelled in a subject or not, I knew
from early on that the world greatly benefits from any form of learning. My influence for
transferring is mostly academically based. I have made good friends here and I plan on continuing
with those relationships when I transfer. However, as my transcripts will exemplify my grades only
go up. After struggling with obtaining good grades in the beginning of high school, I eventually took
more classes on the subjects I was interested in and my grades improved dramatically. From
American Sign Language to Forensic Science, if I was intrigued by the learning capabilities, then
I surpassed my past experiences with grades. In college, my transcripts illustrate that I am doing
very well and that I have proved the admissions team right. The reason being, my major and
everything that I am learning, captivates me. Merely doing well isn t the best option for me
anymore. I am convinced that transferring colleges will give me the challenges I need to succeed

Mayflower Response Letter Project
uly 1620, the Mayflower left England and we all thought that there was hope again. After a
while, on the Mayflower, it was an absolute nightmare because the ship started to have a rancid
smell, everyone was either starving to death, or dying because of diseases. After ,what seemed
like forever, we finally landed on land. We all thanked God for the gift that we survived the
dreadful trip, but before we could leave the boat, we all had to sign the Mayflower Compact. I
signed it right away so I could get off the boat and follow my master, John Carver. After we got off
the boat, we all had to find someplace to settle because we did not know where to go or if there

Reaction About Mulaa
Mulan
Mulan is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It s about a girl named Mulan(Ming Na
Wen) who is fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, she takes his
spot though, as a girl living under a patriarchal government, she is technically unqualified to serve.
She cleverly imitates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon,
Mush, she uses her smarts to help region off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain
along the way. Molly should watch this movie because it gives a message of being different. And
being fearless helps overcome the fear. She needs to overcome her struggle with developing the
relationship with her foster parents.

Ch. 16 Study Questions America s Gilded Age: 1870 1890
1. The American economy thrived because of federal involvement, not the lack of it. How did the
federal government actively promote industrial and agricultural development in this period? BE
SPECIFIC.
The federal government actively promoted industrial and agricultural development. It enacted high
tariffs that protected American industry from foreign competition, granted land to railroad
companies to encourage construction, and used the army to remove Indians form western land
desired by farmers and mining companies. 2. Why were railroads so important to America s second

American family farmers produced goods for the global economy; however, after 1870, the
depression struck the nation, meaning that the produce families grew for the market and economy
would be sold for at a lower price. A family who had contributed themselves to the nation s
economy would find themselves in an event of possibly, and most likely, losing their farm since at
that time farming insurance wasn t available. Ownership of farms were not secure or stable during
this time of depression. 5. According to The Gilded Ageby Mark Twain, the era s slogan was Get
rich, dishonestly if we can, honestly if we must. Explain how this was true of the politics of the era.
This slogan went along with the name that the era was given, the Gilded Age. Gilded means
covered with a layer of gold, but it also suggests that the glittering surface covers a core of little
real value and is therefore deceptive. Twain and Warner were referring not only the remarkable
expansion of the economy in this period but also to the corruption caused by corporate dominance
of politics and to the oppressive treatment of those left behind in the scramble for wealth. 6. How
did American political leaders seek to remake Indians and change their way of life?
Nearly all officials believed that the federal government should persuade or force the Plains Indians

Interview With The Person s Political Beliefs
For this interview assignment, I interviewed my close friend Franki s mother, Deborah. Deborah
is thirty nine years old and she lives with her two children, Franki and Jessica, and with her
husband Frank. The three topics I decided to interview Deborah on were political beliefs,
philosophy of leisure time and the goals in life.
The Person s Political Beliefs
Deborah considers herself a republican and believes that she is very conservative. She believes
that everyone should work for what they want in and from life rather than depend on someone else
s resources such as welfare. I then asked her about the current political issues such as abortion,
LGBTQ, illegal immigrants etc. Deborah considers herself a pro life. She believes abortion should
be illegal throughout the country, but with the exception of rape and amniocentesis; detects
chromosome abnormalities, neural tube defects, and genetic disorders. According to Deborah,
every child should have the opportunity to be born in this beautiful world and nobody should be
able to take that right away from them.
I then asked her how she feels about the issue of immigration. She responded that her family is not

How Does Shaun Tan Use Visual Techniques In The Arrival
Shaun Tan is an Australian author and illustrator of the silent graphic novel, The Arrival. It is an
illustrated story depicting the shared moods of refugees when they take the plunge and move
from their home because of a dangerous factor. It is a story of every migrant, refugee and
displaced person. Tan has created this silent graphic novel using certain techniques to captivate
his audience. These techniques include; Symbolism, Prominence of visual elements and the use
of colors and shades. The two pages which display these techniques are 111 and 112. Elements
Symbolism In the arrival, pages 111 and 112, the changing of seasons is depicted with a tree
changing form, growing to wither and back. A tree which bears fruit or leaves is often a sign of
life. In movies green trees and the sun shining sets a cheerful atmosphere. Pages 111 and 112
show a tree withering to create another layer full of life spreading its seeds. Later it then bears
fruit for the surrounding animals to feed off and then withers away to a skeleton. This may
represent the sacrifices refugees have to make. Their life is cheerful but then there is a disaster,
there is an escape from the disaster, so they take it which then leads to them finding a new home.
The representation of withering can be seen refugee arriving in Australia only to be put into a
detention camp.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the visual representation of the plant in both pages is analyzed closely you can see that
Shaun Tan has made each season have its own type of plant associated with the season. An
example for autumn is a leaf that withers into spring which is represented as a dandelion. By using
these plants, the reader can see the relation of the plants and make out the seasons and symbolism.
The use of tone is also implemented in the graphic novel through the sketching direction. This is a
more artistical factor but still creates a better definition for the

The Middle East
Armageddon in the Middle East. Populations reduced to dust by nuclear war. International actors
drawn into tense conflict and potentially world altering violence. These are the fears held by the
U.S. and Israel when considering the possibility of Iranian nuclear weapons. However, the attitudes
of the Obama administration in discussing potential deals with Iran have demonstrated a change in
the U.S. strategy when interacting with an Iranian regime that desires nuclear capability. In recent
months, Iran has made global headlines once again by asking for permission to develop and
possess nuclear weapons within their state for the purpose of stabilizing the turbulent Middle East.
This recent development has sparked a heated debate over the best way for the United States and
Israel to respond to Iran s quest to obtain nuclear powerin the Middle East, creating mounting
tensions and polarization in American and global politics. The Obama administration aims to
stabilize the Middle East by developing a diplomatic deal with Iran. However, the argument of
Israel and the conservatives in Congress that Iran s potential nuclear capability brings much more
risk and danger than reward is a much more realistic, pragmatic and appropriate viewpoint given the
tensions and instability in the Middle East and the history of Iran s conflict with Western
civilization. Iran s leaders have actively pursued the development of nuclear energy technology
since the launch of U.S. President Dwight D.

The Firebird Suite (1910; version from 1919)
Introduction The Firebird and its Dance
Round of the Princesses (Khorovod)
Infernal Dance of King Kaschei
Berceuse
Finale
The first of Igor Stravinsky s three famous early ballets, The Firebird is the most traditional and
derivative. While The Firebird, similar to Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring, is unquestionably one
of Stravinsky s masterpieces, if considered strictly historically it can be, with some justice, viewed
as warmed over Rimsky Korsakov (the device of contrasting a folkloristic, diatonic style
representing human characters, with a highly chromatic style reserved for depicting the
supernatural had its most conspicuous use in Rimsky s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it was The Firebird ballet, first performed in Paris in 1910, that began his international
career, and although the orchestral suite has remained his most popular work, he was still a little
embarrassed by it years afterwards. The original wastefully large instrumentation he revised in
1919, when he wrote a second suite, and again in 1945, when he put together a third and longer
orchestral suite. Such critical actions, he said, are stronger than words.
The scenario for Firebird, as adapted by Fokine, follows an old Russian folk tale. The Tsarevitch,
Prince Ivan, is hunting the elusive Firebird, and during the night he wanders into a magical
garden (Introduction). As he walks through the garden he sees the Firebird, a beautiful bird with
dazzling plumage (The Firebird and her Dance and Firebird Variation). Ivan captures the
Firebird, but agrees to let her go free, after taking one of her feathers as a trophy. At sunrise, Ivan
meets thirteen princesses, who have come into the garden to dance and play with golden apples
from the garden s orchard (Round Dance of the Princesses). Ivan learns that the garden belongs to
the evil magician king Kaschei, who has enchanted the princesses, and who has the ability to turn
his enemies into stone. The prince, now in love with one of the princesses, vows to enter Kaschei

Analysis Of Marija Gimbutas s The Living Goddess
Archeology like any other science is prone to uncertainty and a couple mistakes. However, when
an idea is presented as a fact, it is outrageous, nothing is completely definite and everything is
basically a theory. Marija Gimbutas was very passionate about the Goddess, in The Living
Goddess, she says, The role of the father in prehistoric antiquity was either not fully understood or
not as highly valued as that of the mother, (112). Nevertheless, the way that she presented her
argument was not convincing. Gimbutas acted as though she knew the history of a civilization
just by looking at the artifacts she found, she used her own research as her evidence to support
her claims, and lastly she is guilty of letting her own ideas cloud her judgment. Throughout her
work, Gimbutas appears to be omniscient claiming to know that there was a civilization in Old
Europe that was matrifocal, peaceful and offered its citizens a higher quality of life. She paves the
road for her peaceful utopia by defining the word civilization through the eyes of an archeologist,
Historians have assumed that civilization implies a hierarchical political and religious organization,
warfare, a class stratification, and a complex division of labor, (Gimbutas, The Civilization viii).
Once she introduced the barbaric society that revolved around males she contrasts this by saying
that gynocentric cultures did not revolve around petty superficial things that mattered in a
patriarchal society (Gimbutas, The

With this theory only material are called when they are needed according to the demand. The JIT

many different qualities, such as containing different body sizes, different skin colors, to different

promoted by the advertising industries. Advertisement agencies generally portray unrealistic
models that show sexually, young attractive individuals who fit into the standards of their gender

men must show power and strength. The mass media use of these unrealistic models sends an

Wolf describes the beauty myth as a powerful belief system, where a woman s self worth is
measured by her beauty. Wolf explains that women are in obsession with the physical perfection

entrapping themselves in their body by not accomplishing the medias representation of women.

A petroleum system is a system that includes a pod of some active source rock with their very

To begin, we must always have love because it gives us courage. We see this when some Russian

Advance Directives Advantages And Disadvantages
Advance directives are becoming popular and highly recommended today. However, they have their
advantages and disadvantages. In the case of Margo, her advance directive raises conflict between
the principle of autonomy and beneficence. The principle of autonomy describes a person s ability
to make his or her own decisions without others controlling their choices or influencing their
decisions. The principle of beneficence describes the act of doing good to others by either removing
harm, preventing harm and promoting good. The advance directive serves to maintain a person s
autonomy in situations in which they are not competent enough to make informed decisions.
Applying this principle to Margo, the healthcare team would have to respect her wishes and deny
her any treatment. However, in doing so, the healthcare team would not be upholding the principle
of beneficence because they would not be providing treatment that would be beneficial to the
patient. If the patient were to receive the treatment, the healthcare team would be removing harm
from the patient. The past wishes versus present interests is an issue in which the patient s past
wishes do not align with the patient s current interests. The patient, when competent might have had
differed desires and views compared to the now incompetent patient. In some situations, mental
changes that occur may cause an individual to change their personality completely. This then raises
the question of whether the competent

Portrayal Of Women
Portrayal of Women in the Media
Gender is the psychological characteristics and social categories that are created by human culture.
Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender when they interact with one another.
Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come from many different places.
Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major factor that influences millions
of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television teach each sex how
to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current television
broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences.
In this broadcasting range, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When adults are shown on the show the men are seen as rugged construction workers or
mailmen, while the women are seen as cooks and mothers. Also, children are shown examples of
items that their sex is expected to like. When the children on the television are asked what
animals are their favorite, girls name teddy bears and kitties, boys name big lions, grizzly and
polar bears. This makes the girls seem innocent, only liking things that are cuddly and do not
post threats to those around them. Teletubbies also shows a definitive way the females are
supposed to act. This show maintains sex role stereotypes such as caretaker and follower for
girls. The show has four main characters called Tubbies. Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po are
their names. They differ in size and color. The two larger Tubbies, Tinky Winky and Dipsy are the
male characters and dressed in dark, masculine colors. Laa Laa and Po are the smaller Tubbies
and dressed in light, feminine colors. The males are always seen as being more active, running
around and dancing. The girls sing together and eat. Tinky Winky is also the leader of

Laimer V. Latimer Case Summary
FACTS:
In 1994 Mr. Latimer was found guilty of second degree murder of his daughter Tracy Latimer, a
12 year old girl who had a severe form of cerebral palsy. On a leave to appeal from the Superior
Court of Canada (SCC), Mr. Latimer s imposition of mandatory minimum sentence for second
degree murder constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in this case, so the accused should receive
a constitutional exemption from minimum sentences under the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms. During the second trial, the defence counsel asked the trial judge for a ruling, in advance
of his closing submissions, on whether the jury could consider a defence of necessity. Whether the
jury should have been allowed to consider a defence of necessity. The trial judge told counsel that
he would rule on necessity after the closing submissions, and later ruled that the defence was not
available. Whether the timing of trial judge s ruling as to the availability of the defence rendered
accused s trial unfair.

Essay On Deportation In The Military
Ultimately, anyone who serves in the United States military should receive automatic and
unconditional citizenship. Everyday there are hundreds of immigrants serving in every branch of
the military, but not one of them is promised citizenship. Anyone who wears our uniform, fights to
defend our constitution and is an American soldiershould never be subjected to deportation.
However, our current immigration policy doesn t even allow a judge to consider a defendant s
militaryservice. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act there is a requirement of mandatory
detainment and the removal of immigrants who have committed and been convicted of aggravated
felonies. The hole in this act that allows U.S. veterans to be deported needs to be adjusted by our
lawmakers and members of congress.

This bill expanded the variety of criminal charges and convictions that would result in the
eligibility of deportation. Under these current laws, The Department of Homeland Security is not
even required to keep track of the number of veterans being deported. There are a number of
legislation efforts taking place that are working to abolish the deportation of any service members.
Democratic Congressman Juan Vargas of San Diego has introduced a series of bills that would
hold the requirement of every branch in the military to have a naturalization office at all sites of
basic training. Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Nevada Democratic Senator
Catherine Cortez Masto are also proposing legislation that would get a better handle on the tracking
of our immigrant veterans, their deportation, and allocate resources to help ensure that qualified
military members in Nevada and across the country receive the guidance and support they need on

The Weight Loss Journey For Wrestling
Despite the dangers, thousands of collegiate and high school wrestlers across the world go on
fasting and binge diets, run with several thick layers of clothing on, spit into a bottle, or even
take laxatives so they can weigh a specific amount on competition day. Health professionals say
this type of diet can be dangerous, rules are set forth to help regulate it, and classmates look at
them like they are crazy. Despite efforts, it s still happening, and some parents allow it and even
support it. For what purpose? To be tougher than the guy standing behind the line in front of you.

To this day, when I want to stop doing something that is difficult it s much easier to look back
and say, I ve done something harder than this, just finish this up. Also, I learned to drink water,
because we really do need it to live. According to an article on the New York Times, three
collegiate wrestlers died within a three month span in 1997 all from cutting weight (Litsky).
Cutting weight is when someone will try to drastically reduce their weight in a short period of
time through a variety of methods. The deaths of these three collegiate wrestlers resulted in a hasty
decision from the NCAA in an attempt to prevent any more injuries or deaths. An article by Terry
Larimer on The Morning Call explains the that policy banned the use of rubber suits and saunas for
use in weight cutting practices because they drastically increase body temperature and
dehydration, which was the root cause for the deaths of these three wrestlers (Larimer). Larimer
also explains changes the NCAA made to the weight classes, adding a seven pound weight
allowance to all of the weight classes so that athletes would not have to lose as much weight, with
the stipulation that all weigh in times for competitions would be held 2 hours prior to the event
rather than 24 hours (Larimer). This rule was enacted to discourage athletes from cutting weight on
the basis that with less recovery time, losing too much weight will not be beneficial to the

Critical Summary Of Insurgent
Choice As was true of its precursor, Insurgent mainly revolves around the theme of choices and in
the manner they can change you. After all, the book s tagline is one choice can destroy you. In
Insurgent, all of Tris s decisions had main drawback, as she determined whether or not to enter risky
situations, to fib to Tobias, and even to surrender herself. With so much on the line, Tris s choices
involve not only her, but everybody around her. As the cycle goes on, option left just as important,
but the stakes get upper and upper DivisionThe entire group system is based around separating
people up and creating diverse groups with limitations between them. Insurgent illustrates how these
divisions generate an us vs. them attitude that eventually brings it to ruin. In this novel, schism also
happen within these groups: Dauntless splits into faithful and conspirator, Abnegation is broken ,
Erudite imperfection from Jeanine and her following, and Johanna and other Amity tear from their
section when they do not have the same point of view with the result to stay straightforward .
These divisions are what eventually creates so much annihilation, and as Tris learns time and yet
again that it is not possible to complete snooty goals when you are separated down in the center.
Trust and Honesty With much of this novel taking place in Candor nerve center, it is to be expected
that trust and honesty figure vastly into the theme. Tris and Tobias s relationship is put under harm

It is believed that during his missionary journeys to the holy town of Mecca Medina, Gurunanak
camped at a house in Lakhpat during 1506 1521 AD. In Ancient times, when Lakhpat was part
of Sindh, Gurunanak crossed to Somiani port of Sindh from Lakhpat for his onward journey to
Mecca Medina in Saudi Arabia. The house in which Gurunanak had stayed has been converted to
Gurudwara. The house has gone through heavy restoration work and now is one of well
maintained buildings of Lakhpat. Nonetheless one can still find the ornate wooden windows,
door frames and portions of the old house amidst the new construction. A UNESCO award for
restoration work after the earth quake is credited to this Gurudwara, which is proudly displayed
inside its prayer hall. An interesting part about this Gurudwara is that the current entrance was
earlier the back yard of the house. Many old homes in India, had an independent structure serving
as an entrance and it would stand a few meters away from the main house. Guests were seated here
before being brought inside the main house. This independent structure can be seen as soon as you
enter the Gurudwara just adjacent to the prayer hall complex. But the old seating area is currently
being used as a storage space. You can go around the complex to see the front side of this
independent structure which served as the main

  • 2. Short-Term Memory Experience The class was asked to do experiments on five different people who I know. We were asked to test their short term memory. I thought it would be easy for my subjects to remember just 10 words. I wanted to see if age or education can change their short term memory outcome. On TV, there is a reality game show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader , well my son is in the fifth grade. We sat at the kitchen table, I read aloud the words that were on the high value list. Then I asked him to write the words that he could remember me saying. Then an hour later, I did the next set of 10 words from the medium value list, then the low value list of words an hour or so after. With my husband, I did the same thing has I did with my son. I asked a friend of mine that has a master s in education and is a principal of a middle school if she could help with this experiment. I wanted to see if having a lot of education would be different than not having it. We couldn t get together in person, but we did do it over Skype. I wanted to make sure that I could watch her and see how she reacted on the 3 sets of words. The first and second set of words we did within an hour and ВЅ of each other. The last set of words we couldn t do till the following day. With my mom, we had to spread it out within two days. She came to my house on the first day and I read the first and second set of words within 45 minutes of each other. The last set of words, I went to her house thinking that maybe being at a different place more comfortable for her, would change the outcome. The last person I tested is a very close friend of mine. I invited him over for dinner without him knowing that he was a guinea pig in my experiment. I asked him to remember the first set of words and to write down all the words that he could remember before dinner. Then I read aloud the second set of words after dinner. • 3. Blek s Graffiti Art A tag is the most basic writing of an artist s name; it is a form of which an artist gain recognition. A graffiti writer s tag is his or her personalized signature. Graffiti is more destructive, they use aerosol, hard to read and they usually do it at night. Street art use different mode of paintings, they do it in broad daylight and it is more acceptable by the community. The artist are treated differently depending on the type of art they are showing. If the art is more acceptable by the people around, then they are praised by their work. Usually the defining factor on whether or not Graffitiart is considered legal is based on permission. This is not a universal rule and every city will have its own process for determining where and what type of Graffiti art is acceptable. There is a basic idea or feeling that a highly tagged neighborhood has been overrun by criminals or street gangs or that it is simply an area of a city that is not worth caring about. Arts is very powerful tool that can change the way we view towards our society and it is more powerful than words itself; it gives us a sense of awareness, it affect our way of thinking by sending us messages that we never thought before and it is more often used as a political commentary. It can change the world by using it as a form of mass communication to our society. In Blek s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Character Analysis Of Rent The musical Rent was first produced in 1994 by Jonathan Larson and is loosely based on the opera La Boheme (1896) by Giacomo Puccini. This rock opera production tells the story of the lives of 8 bohemians living in Manhattan for a year. Many of the characters in Rent are pulled directly from Puccini s La BohГЁme. There are 8 main characters the story follows; Roger Davis, a musician who is HIV positive, Mimi MГЎrquez, an exotic dancer and Roger s girlfriend, Mark Cohen, a Jewish filmmaker who is Roger s roommate, Maureen Johnson, a bisexual performance artist, Joanne Jefferson, a lawyer who is Maureen s girlfriend, Tom Collins, a gay part time philosophy professor at New York University with AIDS. Angel Dumott Schunard, a drag queen who is Collins partner, and Benjamin Benny Coffin III, their landlord and the former roommate of Roger, Mark, Collins, and Maureen. The plot of Rent borrows heavily from its predecessor. La Boheme was also based on young artists and free thinkers, and these characters were afflicted with the plague of the time period, tuberculosis. Similarly, in Rent the artists are all affected in some way by the HIV and AIDS epidemic of the 1990s. The story highlights the two roommates Mark and Roger. A former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, and Mark tries to capture the ups and downs of his friend s lives on tape through his attempts to make a film. The beginning of the film opens up to the main characters struggling to make their rent. The rest of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Structural and Vocabulary Analysis of John Donne s The... A Structural and Vocabulary Analysis of John Donne s The Flea In his poem The Flea , John Donne shows his mastery in creating a work in which the form and the vocabulary have deliberately overlapping significance. The poem can be analyzed for the prominence of threes that form layers of multiple meanings within its three stanzas. In each of the three stanzas, key words can be examined to show (through the use of the OED) how Donne brilliantly chose them because of the various connotations they had to his audience. Finally, each of the three stanzas contains completely different moods that reflect the speaker s emotions as the situation changes. Upon knowing some of John Donne s personal history, especially of his eventual high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the OED, anything that caused surprise or alarm was referred to as a flea. Another common usage for the word flea was as an adjective. Something was like a flea if it was small and contemptible. The third relevance was as a popular phrase saying that there was a flea in one s ear. The OED definition of this saying is, stinging or mortifying reproof, rebuff, or repulse, which sends one away discomfited. It is easy to see the evolution of the word flea to the verb, to flee. The second stanza can be summed up by the word jet. Jet also has several layers of meaning. Donne writes, Though parents grudge, and you, we are met,/ And cloistered in these living walls of jet. The speaker is trying to convince a lady to have an illicit tryst with him, and this line shows that he is being sneaky and sly because they are somewhere dark and secretive. Jet literally means black and shiny, just like a flea, but according to the OED, it also represents an action. A jet is a sudden, darting movement and the speaker actually makes a jet towards the lady. It is in this stanza that he makes his most ambitious argument to the lady, and because this is obviously a sexual proposition, Donne s clever word selection reveals why the third meaning of jet is especially relevant. Jet also has a phallic/male connotation as the root of the word jetty (an outcropping of rocks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A High Point Of Japanese Aristocratic Culture A high point of Japanese aristocratic culture, the Heian period was a time of significant intellectual and cultural growth. It is during this time that women came to have a very important role in the social and interpersonal workings of the court. Though there were still many restrictions upon them, women were able to express themselves as never before and faced a surprising degree of freedom and autonomy in a society that was defined by an immense amount of rigid formalities. One of the things I found to be most interesting from my findings were the power structures that developed within the court of Empress Fujiwara No Shoshi. Women as well as men not only exerted influence within the court but also developed pecking orders as well. Though, today, we have a rough idea of what this pecking order may have looked like with the Empress at the top followed by imperial consorts and the Empresses ladies in waiting, there appears to be no official documented hierarchal structure. Yet, although their may be no official documentation of this structure, evidence of these power structures can be found in the memoirs and works of women of the time, including Murasaki Shikibuand Sei Shonagon. In a society where one was defined almost entirely by their social standing, earning the title of Lady in Waiting was an extremely sought after goal. Although the title most certainly provided women within the court certain privileges over others, it also came with a great deal of anxiety and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Genetic Testing Persuasive Essay What would you do if an immediate family member of yours developed a popular genetic disease and there was a possibility of you having it? Wouldn t you want to know whether or not you had it as well, in your genes? Genetic testing allows for people to know if they have a certain genetic disease, if they need to get a certain treatment plan set up, or if there are ways to prevent it from becoming present or visible in the body. Genetic Discrimination is no longer legally allowed, meaning that there is no longer a need to fear the possibility of your genetic information getting into the wrong hands. Genetic testing should be done by anyone who may have a chance of developing any type of disease that could be life threatening or not. Genetic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it is greatly feared that your genetic information will get in the hands of the wrong person, it is now protected by the law. Genetic Discrimination is no longer allowed because both federal and state laws have been made against allowing employers and insurance agents to discriminate you based on a genetic disease you may have. These laws are part of the GINA Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. There are two titles within GINA, Title One prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Health Insurance and Title Two prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Employment. Others may argue that genetic testing is unreliable and does not work to detect genetic diseases in all parts of the body. Among the variety of genetic tests, some yield high rates of false positive and false negative results, while others are characterized by findings that are precise but of uncertain clinical or predictive value (1998, Hastings Center Report, 15 21). Although that may be true, there can be tests done in other parts of the body to get better results instead of the false results. Taking blood from another location in the body will allow the patient to get the true positive or negative that they need to tell if they have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. An Experiment On How Fast The Pressure Generated By The... Shapiro and Dinske(2009) stated that this equation could enable geoscientists to know how fast the pressure generated by the introduction of fluid is travelling into the rocks to be broken. Meanwhile, this equation can only be applied to a homogenous, isotropic medium but in real life, geologic media are hydraulically heterogeneous. For this case, times greater than t0(time at beginning) are considered because if the injection stops at t0, the earthquakes and tremors will gradually cease to occur. These times (t) also describe the propagation of a maximal pore pressure perturbation in the space. Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015) stated that seismic events occur in rock sections with high Young s Modulus and low Poisson s ratio. Young s modulus refers to the ratio of amount of stress to strain while Poisson s ratio is the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain. They stated that a significant amount of rock stress originated from elastic rock heterogeneity, and that the heterogeneity index of rocks indicates these rock sections. Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015) concluded that seismicity induced by fluid injection can be of two ways. One is by the shear reactivation which explains the linear diffusion seismicity explained previously and the other is by tensile opening which only occurs when the minimum effective stress becomes tensile. The reactivation probability of a preexisting fracture is given by CFS calculation which involves cohesion, shear and normal stress, coefficient of internal friction and pore pressure. If CFS is greater than 0, the fault is in a stable state; if CFS is less than 0, the fault is unstable and if CFS is equal to 0, failure occurs. According to Langenbruch and Shapiro(2015), a test was conducted where only the friction coefficient and cohesion were kept constant while the other parameters were altered. • 11. Pietas In Aeneas In The Aeneid Before Augustus reign began, civil war had ravished the basic principles of the Roman people. Faction had undermined pietas, the basis of Roman culture and as Cicero defines it, that which warns us to fulfil our duties towards our country, our parents, or others connected with us by ties of blood (De Inventione II). The duty towards country, parents and relatives was less of a bond because faction determined duty rather that pietas. Therefore Rome, a city founded in pietas, was that foundational principle. Internal faction undermined the principles of pietas and corrupted its role in the city. Rome required a moral reform of pietas; it needed pietas to refocus the roots of the city. Commissioned by Augustus, Virgil fashions the Aeneid in order to portray the necessity of pietas. Virgil compares his work to Homer s and with each comparison of Aeneaswith another Greek hero, he emphasises the pietas within Aeneas. By thus combining the heroism many Greek heroes into Aeneas, Virgil redefines Greek epic heroism to include pietas. By doing this, Virgil shows that Rome s unification through pietas harnesses her power. Thus, Virgil unveils to the Romans a virtue which allows each individual Roman citizen embody and partake in the glory of Rome. Paris, the antagonist of the Trojan war, embodies and reflects Troy s lack of pietas. When Paris stole Helen, he was Menelaus guest and under the ancient code of hospitality. However, the abduction of Helen went further than breaking an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Things They Carried by Tim OВґBrien Tim O Brien wants the reader to feel what he felt going through this nightmare. The device he uses is imagery and this is important because the reader can feel like they are a part of the war. He gives an account of the nightmare : His entrenching tool like an ax, slashing. I can imagine an angry lumber jack cutting deep into tree, which in his case represented his emotional feelings for the love he had for Martha. Martha was a young, beautiful girl with whom he was so in love, but Martha only saw Lieutenant Cross as a good friend. When you are trying to understand the emotions of a person is difficult because you are never in their shoes. O Brien writes, He sat at the bottom of his fox hole and wept. Our government, our laws, our beliefs would not have changed from those of our early ancestors. Hence, it is visible that without change our society would be stuck in a rut with no way to advance and improve. Roland Barthes was interested in the way that signifiers words which are derived of meaning unless associated with an image or object were related to each other (intertextuality) and the way they reflect the context and culture from which they came. He believed that no text can stand alone as an isolated work. Rather they echo and reflect each other. Thus, he said, we should never do author centered studies and wrote of the Death of the Author . Rather, he stated that we should look at a text in its relation to other texts. Barthes ideas led to Post structuralism. Structuralists believed that meaning in literature could be determined by studying the language structures the signs or signifiers which represented ideas within a particular culture e.g. white as a sign or symbol of purity or innocence. Post Structuralists, however, argued that meaning can never be fully understood because the cultural ideas represented by those signs are themselves constructed by a society rather than ... Marija Gimbutas was very passionate about the Goddess, in The Living Goddess, she says, The role of the father in prehistoric antiquity was either not fully understood or not as highly valued as that of the mother, (112). Nevertheless, the way that she presented her argument was not convincing. Gimbutas acted as though she knew the history of a civilization just by looking at the artifacts she found, she used her own research as her evidence to support her claims, and lastly she is guilty of letting her own ideas cloud her judgment. Throughout her work, Gimbutas appears to be omniscient claiming to know that there was a civilization in Old Europe that was matrifocal, peaceful and offered its citizens a higher quality of life. She paves the road for her peaceful utopia by defining the word civilization through the eyes of an archeologist, Historians have assumed that civilization implies a hierarchical political and religious organization, warfare, a class stratification, and a complex division of labor, (Gimbutas, The Civilization viii). • 37. Advance Directives Advantages And Disadvantages Advance directives are becoming popular and highly recommended today. However, they have their advantages and disadvantages. In the case of Margo, her advance directive raises conflict between the principle of autonomy and beneficence. The principle of autonomy describes a person s ability to make his or her own decisions without others controlling their choices or influencing their decisions. The principle of beneficence describes the act of doing good to others by either removing harm, preventing harm and promoting good. The advance directive serves to maintain a person s autonomy in situations in which they are not competent enough to make informed decisions. Applying this principle to Margo, the healthcare team would have to respect her wishes and deny her any treatment. However, in doing so, the healthcare team would not be upholding the principle of beneficence because they would not be providing treatment that would be beneficial to the patient. If the patient were to receive the treatment, the healthcare team would be removing harm from the patient. The past wishes versus present interests is an issue in which the patient s past wishes do not align with the patient s current interests. The patient, when competent might have had differed desires and views compared to the now incompetent patient. In some situations, mental changes that occur may cause an individual to change their personality completely. This then raises the question of whether the competent ...
