Sir Isaiah Berlin s Analysis of Freedom in Two Concepts of Liberty
Sir Isaiah Berlin is the author of one of the most important works on political philosophy written in
the twentieth century Two Concepts of Liberty . In the essay, he distinguishes between two types of
liberty. Negative liberty is simply being left alone to do whatever one wants to do, to be able to act
and achieve without interference from other persons. Positive liberty is defined as being free to be one
s own master, but also involves someone interfering with one s life to determine to an extent what one
becomes, and how one becomes one s own master.
Gerald MacCallum (1925 87) states that Berlin makes a mistake in ... Show more content on

If I cannot afford to buy food to feed myself, then my freedom is restricted. However, if I cannot win a
marathon because I haven t trained enough, then my freedom is not restricted.
When Berlin makes a distinction between positive and negative liberty, he seemingly tries to fit many
different ideas under two simplistic headings. The first idea that Berlin discusses is not being
interfered with, as opposed to the ability or power to act in a certain way. No interference can be
named formal freedom (which can be categorised as negative ), and amounts to x not being interfered
with when trying to do or become y; for example, a person is formally free to buy a house, as there is
no law barring this. Having the ability or power to act in a certain way can be named effective
freedom (which can be categorised under the positive label), and it amounts to x having the power or
capacity to do or be y; for example, a person is effectively free to buy a house only if he can afford to.
The two ideas differ in that x can be formally free to do y but may not be effectively free to do y, e.g. a
person is not stopped legally from buying a house but cannot afford to do so. So therefore to be
negatively free in this sense, one must be free from interference to do y, but to be positively free, one
must have to power or

The Temptations Essay
The Temptations Motown took the world over by surprise. The vivid and new sounds from Motown
artists made screaming dedicated fans all over the world. With the addicted fans, Motown artists raised
the bad and opened the eyes of those who thought African Americans would never amount to
anything. Although there still happened to be racism, and prejudice, African Americans managed to
become recognized and well known for their abilities. Not only were the Motown artists extraordinary
talented, but they also were unbelievably strong and persistent for going against all those people out
there who discriminated on them. They took the criticisms continued and went on with what they
loved to do. One of the most famous groups during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Temptations had a totally of 21 members who were once apart of the band. The first five members
were Melvin Franklin, Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and Elbridge Bryant. After
some struggle with the first two singles, Bryant was the first to leave. Bryant after not contributing his
full abilities to the band from his slacking off was finally fired right after a Motown Christmas party in
1966. Right after Bryant left, David Ruffin came aboard. His skills were seen right at the beginning,
and with him the Temptations became known as the classic 5, producing some of their best work.
Although Ruffin seemed to be exactly what the group needed, their high likings soon disappeared.
Ruffin became way too self centered and along with his drug addictions, and missing of not only
rehearsals but concerts as well, Ruffin was then fired. Replacing him, Dennis Edwards originally from
the Contours joined the crew, and became the new lead singer. Entering new and different styles of
their music, things were going fine, until Paul s alcohol addictions started to become a big problem.
As his breathes became shorter Richard Street, from the Monitors, filled in for him on days he couldn

1973. Before Paul s problems started to

A Rhetorical Analysis Of A Speech By Dr. Peter Weinstock
In January 2016, Dr. Peter Weinstock who is an Intensive Care Unit physician and Director of the
Pediatric Simulator Program at the Boston Children s Hospital / Harvard Medical School delivered a
speech at the TED conference. The topic of his speech was Lifelike simulations that make real life
surgery safer , in which he presented how important in difficult surgeries can be the use of current
computer special effects and 3D prints. In his speech, he in an amazing way underlines how important
it is to use realistic simulations before precise surgeries, especially for children. Using examples,
slides and other help he shows the audience the wonders of technology to help analyze the case in
every respect, but also to minimize the risk of failure of the operation. From the first minutes, the
audience is attracted by their appearance, attitude, and tone of voice, which attests to his
professionalism and knowledge of the subject. Through appropriate modulation of voice, he manages
to keep the audience s attention to the end.
Weinstock begins his speech with intriguing questions addressed to the audience. Quietly voice he
asks questions strongly affecting their imagination and then declares that something as unimaginable
for them is real. On the screen, he shows a photo of the newborn and properly aligning the voice he
builds tension in the audience step by step reporting on the child s condition after birth. He shows the

Not For Profit Financial Statement
Abstract
Not For Profit financial statement preparers might experience dramatic changes in practice as a result
of new standards which proposed on April 22, 2015. Before that time, the FASB has endeavored to
eliminate differences in reporting between Not For Profits and business enterprises. In this new model
that uses a different approach to presenting financial information, a key target is to make a consistency
to all NFPs. For examples, NFPs within the proposal s range would be required to demonstrate
standardized operating measures. In addition, for the statement of cash flows, it asked to use the direct
method to show it. Other proposed changes are designed to make it simplified and clarify the reporting
of classes of net assets in the statement of financial position. For instance, expand disclosures related
to the expense and liquidity. In the following sections, I will list the updated changes and compare the
differences between the old version and the new one. By contrasting the old and the new, we could get
to know how should we put the new regulation into use.

How Can Hybrid Cars Have Affected The Automobile Industry
Hybrid and electric cars have affected the automobile industry by using alternative energies other than
fuel and reducing the amount of carbon dioxide that is emitted into the atmosphere. Like everything,
there are many advantages and disadvantages to having a hybrid or an electric car. The first electric
car was built in Scotland by Robert Anderson in 1839. (Berman, 2011) Over the years there were little
improvements but sometime between 1890 and 1910, there were significant improvements in the
battery technology that were made by H. Tudor, Edison, and Junger. (Berman, 2011) According to
(Berman, 2011) the first car to be labeled as a hybrid car was made by the Austrian Dr. Ferdinand
Porsche. It used an internal combustion engine that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nowadays, most modern electric cars contain a lithium ion battery. Some electric cars do still use the
lead acid battery and gas powered cars also use the lead acid battery to help start the engines. (Shahan,
2014) Like the hybrid car, the electric car has a lot of advantages to owning one as well. One of the
huge advantages to owning an electric car is that zero gas if required for the car to run. (Rinkesh,
2016) So instead of potentially spending thousands of dollars on gas each year, you could end up
spending as less as five hundred forty dollars a year to charge your vehicle. It is also possible to get
money back from the government for going green and using an electric car. (Campbell, 2014) The
electric car is also a great advantage for the environment. Since the electric car doesn t use gas and
runs on a fully electric powered engine, they are very eco friendly. They don t emit any toxic gases,
smoke, or any other fumes into the atmosphere. (Rinkesh, 2016) This makes the electric car even
better than the hybrid car because the hybrid car still produces

Evil In The Bell Jar
Evil can be defined as being profoundly immoral and wicked (Oxford Dictionaries, 2017).
In my texts, evil is displayed in many forms. In Disgrace, David Lurie s evil is caused by his distorted
viewpoints and in The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, all three cases are as a result of poverty. In The
Bell Jar, Esther s evil suicidal attempts are caused by her narcissistic insanity; in The Crow, evil is an
offset of Eric s traumatic experience and need for revenge; and in Fargo, evil arises as a result of
bullying. Each character mentioned provides a different way of expressing the evil within them.
The above definition gives us a basis in determining what research has revealed as evil s two root
causes. The first is circumstantial; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soraya is a prostitute, whom David sees every Thursday afternoon. David sees her merely as a
beautiful object that he can make use of by stating that her beauty does not belong to her alone
(Coetzee, 2009). She is a 2D persona for David, resulting in their sex being lengthy, abstract and
rather dry (Coetzee, 2009) and Soraya avoids David as soon as he begins to pry into her personal life.
Melanie Isaacs, on the other hand, is not a prostitute but a student of David s, who attracts David due
to her purity and looks. David is unable to admit that he raped Melanie, trying to justify his actions by
saying that she does not resist (Coetzee, 2009) and that he is merely acting as a servant of Eros
(Coetzee, 2009). We are able to see how evil David is in the way that he never feels shame for his
wrongdoings, despite being disgraced (publically shamed and being dismissed by the university).
David claims that he was enriched by the experience (Coetzee, 2009) of raping Melanie and in court
says I have said the words to you (Coetzee, 2009) showing the futility of the apology. The root of
David s evilness is not deeply explored in the novel, but can be linked to his skewed mindset that
women were made as an appendage to man and to be used by man. David s deep passion for poetry of
the Romantic Era, has led him to want to follow in the footsteps of his role model, Byron, who was
known to have been a womanizer, having

Physical, Cognitive And Social Development Stages Of Human...
Human development is a science that focuses on the observations regarding physical, cognitive and
social behavior of humans throughout their lifespan. Social workers must be aware of the various
dimensions that are part of normal development to help clients understand what is typical during each
developmental stage. Using a multidimensional approach, the social worker is able to assess both
strengths and risks factors of each evolving stage. Each stage of development involves reaching
certain milestones. It s important to understand that sometimes these milestones are not reached due to
environmental, personal or external factors that affect the normal process development. The
professional social worker must take into account factors such as culture or sexual preference while
assessing typical development. According to (Ashford and LeCroy, 2013) there are seven different
human developmental stages beginning with the physical development of the fetus and ending with
death in the late adulthood stage. Young adulthood is a stage of human development were many
decisions take place. A typical young adult is between the ages of twenty two and thirty four years old.
Initial choices in love, lifestyle, values, and occupation occur. The young adult is seeking to develop
meaningful relationships, while building an occupational identity, thinking about forming a family,
seeking independence from its parents, and experiencing high stress with the growing responsibilities.

Poverty Inequality And Economic Growth
The purpose of this essay is to investigate the extent in which poverty, inequality and economic
growth are related. These three dimensions are regularly perceived as indices of the complex and
multidimensional concept of economic development . This term is not black and white however: it is a
concept that is more than just merely income analysis. Poverty can be broken down into two separate
definitions: absolute and relative. Absolute poverty describes the position of an individual who is
living on less than $2 per day and is incapable of obtaining the minimum levels of income, food,
clothing healthcare, shelter and other essentials (Todaro Smith, 2015). Relative poverty on the other
hand compares individuals means of living in different societies. Subsequently, levels of relative
poverty will differ from country to country, for example, the United Kingdom and China. Inequality
represents the uneven distribution of income within a region or country. Finally, economic growth is
typically measured by gross national income (GNI). GNI is both the total domestic and foreign output
declared by the inhabitants of a country (Todaro Smith, 2015). If there is an increase in the output of a
nation, this growth should cause GDP per capita to increase simultaneously. With this expansion in
incomes, individuals theoretically should move out of the absolute poverty level of $1.25 per day.
Although this would hypothetically occur, these parties may only emerge from the poverty

1. Introduction
1.1. Use of biomass in Sub Saharan Africa
Biomass (charcoal and firewood) is the major energy source in southern Africa, particularly in rural
areas. Most households rely on biomass energy for cooking and space heating. This exhaustive use of
biomass cause several health and environmental related threats. This heavy reliance on biomass exerts
pressure on forests and trees which eventually leads to extensive deforestation and as well as soil
erosion. Furthermore, the traditional cooking on open fire leads to severe problems of indoor air
pollution and its associated health hazards. It is estimated that about 3% of the global burden of
diseases is caused by wood smoke resulting in 1.6 million premature deaths every year including 900
children under five (Malinski, 2008; Warwick and Doig, 2004; WHO, 2002).
One of the factors that results in high demand for fuelwood is its low combustion efficiency (Muneer
and Mohamed, 2003). The development and distribution of energy efficient cooking technology such
as improved biomass cooking stoves (ICS) is considered as one of the best technically possible,
socially reliable, and economically viable interventions available that can help to maintain low
demand for fuelwood to reduce pressure on forest reserves (Arnold et

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Summary
Summary
For this article there were no research questions, but the authors wanted to focus on the pathogenesis,
diagnosis and treatment of PCOS. They found that polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is common in
women, with a10% prevalence in women of reproductive age. Polycystic ovary syndrome is defined
as ovarian dysfunction with polycystic ovaries. It also includes androgen excess which is shown by
testosterone levels being elevated. Increased levels of testosterone can be seen through excess body
hair. Obesity is seen in many women with PCOS, this can lead to insulin resistance and Type II
Diabetes. Genetics has an impact on polycystic ovary syndrome with 20 40% of people with PCOS
having first degree relatives with the syndrome.
The authors also found that PCOS can cause many long term side effects, including Type II diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, and malignancy. Type II diabetes is due to the high prevalence
of obesity leading to insulin resistance in PCOS. Women with PCOS are at higher risks for
cardiovascular diseases including increased levels of low density lipoproteins. Polycystic ovary
syndrome can also lead to anxiety, depression and binge eating. Women with obesity have a ... Show

Feudalism Vs Manorialism
Right after the Fall of Rome in 476 C.E., attacks from the Germanic tribes caused chaos all over the
Roman Empire. The commoners sought protection which they received in exchange for produce. This
exchange later developed into a system that included fiefs, contracts between peasants and their lords,
which was then called feudalism (Feudalism Britannica). Feudalism was practiced on manors, land
that met all the necessary needs of the people living on it, where it was called manorialism
(Manorialism Britannica). Through feudalism and manorialism, a new era known as the Middle Ages
emerged. Although historians may argue that feudalism handed ultimate authority to the elite, who
could effortlessly manipulate their superiority, it established a safe, stable and organized society and
strengthened the social structure militarily and politically. It benefitted all: the poor received
protection and land while the powerful acquired military service and produce with the help of manors
and fiefs. This system also secured stability, power and close control within the society. ... Show more

Causes Of Religious Freedom In The New England Colonies
Religious freedom varied from what colony you lived in. All of the colonies in the regions had to deal
with religious problem, whether it be persecution or being removed from that colony. Some people
had the religion/religious freedom they wanted. However, the Middle Colonies had a lot of religious
toleration while the New England Colonies had very little toleration. Therefore some people did get
the freedom they wanted, but it varied from where they lived and who they were. The New England
region consist of the four colonies Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.
The first colony found out of these four was Massachusetts. It was found in 1620. It was led by
William Bradford. The second colony to be found was New Hampshire. It was found in 1629 by
Captain John Mason. The third one was Connecticut. The Connecticut colony was founded in 1635 by
Thomas Hooker. Last but not least is Rhode Island. It was found in 1636 by Roger Williams. The
Pilgrims wanted to create an Anglican utopia. Other religions besides Puritanism was not allowed
except for in Rhode Island. People who were not Puritans lost voting rights and were required to pay
taxes to support the Congregational Church. The Mayflower Compact was created in 1620. The

The Importance Of Folk And Popular Culture
For one of my cultural visits I went to a Mexican restaurant, El Molcajete, in Geneva, IL. In this
restaurant I observed elements of folk and popular culture which included the music that was playing
there, which was mariachi band music which made the place feel more authentic to Mexico. The
music from the mariachi band was a piece of their folk culture they had, because they used violins,
trumpets, guitarron a spanish guitar used in most Spanish music, and a vihuela a five stringed guitar
with a high pitch. Some of the popular culture that was there was the outfits the servers were wearing
which was a plain old t shirt and some black pants, and it was more popular culture because nowadays
servers wear a shirt and pants that match what the theme or idea of the restaurant is. I categorized the
mariachi band as part of the folk culture because the instruments that they were using were traditional
instruments used in Mexico to produce the Spanish sound. The servers outfits I categorized as popular
culture because of the fact that servers in many restaurants nowadays wear the same clothing that is
casual, making it an element of popular culture. In my opinion I think that the folk elements are seen
around but not practiced in everything that is in the restaurant, due to the exposure to the popular
culture of our world. In the restaurant, some tools or utensils used in the restaurant include a basket
that holds tortillas warm, but does not make them soggy or cold because of a

leaders of the USSR at the time either lessened the oppression or imposed stricter measures while they

A View From The Bridge Thesis
The author wrote about Eddie who has been having it rough lately. He tried to make the best out of his
situation living under the circumstances that he does. His family keeps pressuring into avenging his
cousin s death. But he still manages to keep his head held high although it seemed like the entire
world was against him. He avoids getting into trouble or doing drugs because he knows that he wants
a good future and doing those things would not help. He keeps his head down and works for his dollar
no matter how hard it can get for him. He wrote the book to explain how hard some people work for
what they have. It is not always an easy road and he makes sure to explain it very well how hard he
had it. His own family were the ones encouraging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Turning against the world of drugs and violence, Eddie vows to take the straight and narrow path,
even if it means struggling at temporary manual labor jobs. So when he takes a landscaping job for a
white man across town thinking that god had finally heard him, the man s truck is stolen from the
front of Eddie s apartment causing yet another problem to add on. He hid for hours and days drinking
because he really liked his job with the white man and was afraid of what might happen to him.
Although getting the truck stolen from him kinda seems like a big deal, it is not because that sort of
thing happens daily in the streets of fresno that he lived by, it was almost like that was something
normal to him. So when his aunt gets home she reminds him yet another time that his cousin died only
this time a gun came with the tortillas she would try and persuade him with the avenge the death of
her son.
In my opinion no matter how much eddie tries to stay away from trouble it always ends up finding
him. He gets all these opportunities and something bad happens every single time it seems like. I do
not think eddie is the issue either it is all of what he is surrounded by that keeps messing him up and
getting him off track, I think that he should continue working the jobs he has and move away from
there to see how successful he can become then. Because if his own family is wanting

What Is Kampog Glam Essay
Introduction of Kampong Glam
On 7 July 1989, the historic district of Kampong Glam was officiated as a conservation area in
Singapore.
Decades ago, Kampong Glam housed people from the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Celebes
Islands, Riau and Southern Arabia which are mainly Muslim immigrants and are positioned based
largely on their prominence, social and economic status. As time passes, Indian and Chinese
immigrants began to reside in the same area, making it a multiethnic community.
The Kampong Glam trail that I embarked on includes 12 main destinations, namely the Malay
Heritage Centre, Gedung Kuning, Masjid Sultan, Bussorah Street, Former Chung Cheng School and
Chong Pun Girls School, Madrasah Alsagoff Al Arabiah, Madrasah Aljunied Al Islamiah, Malabar
Muslim Jama ath Mosque, St John Ambulance Headquarters, Masjid Hajjah Fatimah and Kallang

Arab Street was also called Jawa Koi (Java Street) by the Chinese and pookadai sadakku (Flower
Street) by the Tamils. To add on, Pondok Java which accommodated Javanese migrants and made
popular by the Javanese theatre and arts performances is situated near the car park at Kandahar Street.
(Kampong Glam: A Heritage Trail, 2015)
Although all of these might portrayed Kampong Glam as having a rich Malay identity, it is no longer
what it was now. Through gentrification and commodification, it is hard to even pinpoint that

Examine Why Multinational Corporations Seek to Transfer...
The HRM policy of a firm is looked as a most important strength which needs to be taken care of all
the time to have a competitive advantage within the industry they operating in. Multinational
corporations (MNCs) seek to transfer their home country human resource management (HRM)
practices to their overseas subsidiary as to them it is just another approach towards globalisation. It
can be an element of success for MNCs if they manage to transfer these HRM practices across their
subsidiaries in an effective manner. An effective transition of these policies depends on the
organisational, cultural, social and relational factors (Bartlett amp; Ghoshal 1998; Evans, Pucik amp;
Barsoux 2002; Poedenphant 2002). The transition of these policies ... Show more content on

The whole procedure of international strategy is from adopting the policies implemented from the
parent company to the enhancement of the competencies developed at the subsidiary, which will
complement the organization on the whole.
International experience is also one of the factors that push a MNC to implement the home country
HRM policies across their subsidiaries. It depends on how long a MNC has been active in their
international operations that impact the nature of their decision while implementing HR policies
across their subsidiaries. Having a lack of international experience, a MNC will make their
subsidiaries adopt their home country policies (The effect of corporate level organisational factors on
the transfer of human resource management practices: European and US MNCs and their Greek
subsidiaries, Barbara Myloni,July 2006). A MNC with more international experience is less likely to
adapt their home country policies as the more a firm gains international experience, the less dominant
their home country HR policies become.
Looking from the dependency theory s point of view, the need for control also pushes a MNC to
implement their home based policies. The stronger the need is, the more the necessity of integrating
these policies will grow, and hence there is a probability that the HR practice will resemble the home
country practices. The more dependent a subsidiary is to their parent, the more the firm will try

A Critical Analysis Of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery is set in a small village who relies deeply on their crops. This
story is about a sacrifice that takes place every year in which the heads of households draw for their
families in order to see who wins and saves the town. The readers grow close to a character named
Tessie who decides to speak her mind when it s too late. In the end, the townsfolk realise that what
comes around goes around. Before the ceremony started, Tessie Hutchinson was almost late. Instead
of apologizing, she joked and acted as if it was nothing. This day is one of the most important days of
the year for the town folk, it should not be easily forgotten. When she finally arrived the first thing she
said was, Clean forgot what day it was... and then I looked out the window and the kids was gone, and
then I remembered it was the twenty seventh and came a running, instead of formally addressing the
serious situation and apologizing, she gave an inadequate excuse. Tessie was so late that people knew
that her priorities aren t in the right places. By the time she had gotten there, people started to think
she wasn t going to show up without notice, we can recall a few people saying, Bill, she made it after
all. Tessie had sentenced herself to her death before the ceremony could even start. Shortly after Tessie
arrived she talked with the surrounding people. If talking wasn t enough she even joked with some of
her neighbors saying, Wouldn t have me leave

Shirley Jackson s Uncle The Lottery
Shirley Jackson was born on December 14, 1916 in San Francisco, California but grew up in
Burlingame where she lived until she began to attend the University of Rochester. A year later Jackson
withdrew from the University of Rochester and enrolled in Syracuse University where she began
writing fictional stories in her campus s humor magazine. As Jackson aged and grew as a writer, it was
apparent that she was deeply troubled. As stated by Elizabeth Judd in The Joy and Terror of Shirley
Jackson, Jackson s phobias and morbid obesity indicate a deeply troubled psyche...Jackson would later
express her distress in the wake of The Lottery, (Judd 54). In addition to this information it is

The town of New Hope seemed as if it were a normal town to live in. The short story opened by
describing the beautiful day, then quickly transitioned into the lottery. Jackson did not begin by telling
the reader exactly what the lottery was, but by the details she provided the reader, one could
understood the lottery was a long, drawn out process which involved the participation of the entire
town. This information did not hint to any odd activity happening in the town, so as the story
developed the events that occurred later in the narrative seemed very peculiar. The reader was
informed early in the story about how the lottery was a important tradition in the town. All of the
citizens in the town of New Hope were forced to migrate to a common area in the town where the
head of each household, typically a male, was instructed to draw a single, folded piece of paper from

Parenting Styles And Their Effects On Children
Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children We must all realize the impact we have on the world
around us, whether it be an immediate effect or an action that releases a chain of events that is
unforeseeable. Taking responsibility for the activities we partake in during everyday life is crucial for
progressing in the future. This concept becomes much more actualized when we are raising our
children. Children are undoubtedly the future of today. How we raise them will immediately impact
what kind of lives they will have in the future, which in turn, will set up the world for years to come.
Parents tend to want a stable, and more successful life for their kids. With this in mind, parents should
practice reliable parenting styles to ensure their child s social, emotional, and intellectual development
isn t compromised. The way we raise our kids could lead to a multitude of psychological problems
and emotional imbalance if done improperly. Guardians should all engage in the best parenting styles
to make sure that our children and leading safe and happy lives that resonate with the future of this
world (Mgbemere and Telles, Types of Parenting Styles and How to Identify Yours ). The least
involved parenting style is one where the parent(s) aren t aware of what is going on in their child s
life. Respectively, this is called Uninvolved or Neglectful Parenting. In this parenting style, the
caretakers aren t active in their child s life, therefor missing opportunities to care

Parents May Not Be Licensed Essay
In the essay Licensing Parents, LaFollette argues that the state should require all parents to be licensed
(182). Though LaFollette considers some theoretical and practical objections to his claim, he gives no
particular attention to how an activity could be precisely defined as potentially harmful to others, what
specific competence would be required for an activity to be done safely, and how reliably such
competence could be determined. In this paper, I will argue that the difficulty of clearly defining the
three criteria for an activity to be licensed undermines LaFollette s assertion that parenting ought to be
licensed. After describing LaFollette s basic rationale for licensing parents, I will indicate that

Consequently, because parenting is an activity potentially very harmful to children (184) and a parent
must be competent if he is to avoid harming his children (185), LaFollette concludes that the general
criteria for regulatory licensing can be applied to parents. However, there are several theoretical and
practical objections to LaFollette s proposal, but he argues that they all fail to undermine the proposal.
In the beginning of his argument, LaFollette claims that parenting is an activity potentially very
harmful to children (184). However, LaFollette does not explicitly justify how parenting could be
precisely defined as potentially harmful to children. In other words, LaFollette does not explicitly
establish what comprises exactly the minimum amount of harm that makes the activity potentially
harmful or very harmful. Instead, LaFollette only offers two scenarios in which children are harmed
abused or neglected by their parents (184). In this paragraph, I shall argue that, without a precise

Diali Cissokho and Kaira Ba
On March 27, I had the distinct pleasure of witness a unique band perform on the porch of the Love

seeing the art which was located inside. I, with several of my friends, arrived at the venue early and

elements to each. Then, the kora also began to play. The kora is a unique instrument unlike anything I
have ever heard or seen before. It has twenty one strings and is played similar to that of a guitar, but
facing the person playing. As Cissokho began to play it, his mastery of the instrument was apparent.
The kora sounds extremely similar to that of steel drums, with the same kind of almost Caribbean or
West African flavor. As the first song got under way, Cissokho began to sing as well. His voice was

Feudalism In Romantic Poetry
A dictum from Heraclitus may illustrate the origin of romantic poetry, when we are awake we have a
world in common, but when we are asleep each has his own world (Quoted by O Connell 35). As
conceived from the innermost being, romantic poems have a close relationship with dream. However,
as the definitions and characteristics are controversial, some critics oppose to use the term
Romanticism . For instance, Arthur Lovejoy criticizes that Romanticism is an obscure norm when
defined by associating the nature and emotion as even Plato can be regarded as a pioneer in romantic
poetry according to this definition (Lovejoy 230). However, romantic poetry cannot be defined with a
linguistic entitle without considering the historical process (Wellek 2) for it appeared in a specific
period after the revolution in France and the Enlightenment, when the awareness of rationalism started
to spreed. Romantic poetry is a genre which is used by poets to transcend ... Show more content on

will drive the leaves away, implying the awareness of liberty has formed and revolutions are

will be replaced, arousing enthusiasm within the people. In this poem, substances in the nature are
applied to be symbols in order to attack the feudalism and praise the willing for liberty. Thus,
symbolism is applied in romantic poems to analyze the humanity and scorn the

Hunger Of New York City
Hunger in New York City
Since the recession started in 2007, the national statistics of unemployment, low income households,
and hunger have increased yearly. Even after the recession had ended in 2009 the economic issues are
still very prominent. Everything economically related to the health and welfare of the vast majority of
our American citizens, has sky rocketed in a very negative way. Students, parents, children and
families alike have, and continue to struggle with hunger on a day to day basis. Our communities have
become impoverished with food, expanding state to state with hunger and even starvation. New York
City, has become a haven of families struggling with the realities that hunger can bring. How long can
we live like this before somebody does anything about this?
The research on this matter has some astonishing numbers, NYC Hunger Exp. 2012: One City Two
Realities writes: In 2012, almost three in four New York City households with children with annual
incomes of less than $25,000 (70 percent) had difficulty affording needed food. The percentage having
difficulty is up 30 percent from 2011 (54 percent), representing the biggest increase since the start of
the poll in 2003 and the biggest increase of any population group in this year s poll. Soon after the
recession, the numbers have still risen, and these recent statistics have proven the dramatic need for
help on an individual level for low income families.

A Short Story Of A Ghost Story
I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town s Latin
school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with melancholy:
dark and well lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and comfortable, snug
and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets.
The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled during
this time. My parents home belonged to one realm. This realm was familiar to me in many ways
strictness and love, model behaviour and school. This realm was thriving in clarity, brilliance and
purity, polite conversations and good manners. This was the world in which morning hymns were
sung and Christmas celebrated. Straight lines and paths led into the future: there was duty, love,
forgiveness, good resolutions, wisdom and reverence. If one wanted an unsullied and ordinary life,
one made sure one was in league with this world.
The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language,
promised and demanded different things. This world contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals and
servant girls. It was dominated by a loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious
things, including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives, calving cows,
horse sinking to their deaths, talks of robberies, murders and suicides. All these wild and cruel,

Negative Ambition In Macbeth
Negative ambition fills the minds of many people across the world. However, we are going to look at
a specific example from the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The main character from this play
is Macbeth who is struggling with an ambition to become the king of Scotland. This paper will
demonstrate that Macbeth is an accurate example of negative ambition. Ambition is the desire for
something and the determination to achieve that desire. Ambition can be classified in two different
ways. The first, positive ambition, can be summed up as the desire to get better as a human. There are
so many problems that can occur during a human s life on earth and through positive ambition one can
help themselves overcome their problems. For instance if you take the situation of an individual with
cancer. A majority of successful survivors of cancer have the desire to get back to normal health. To
accomplish this the patients must go through a lot of pain and struggle but positive ambition can help
them push through. The second classification of ambition is negative ambition. Negative ambition can
be summed up as having the desire for something and the determination to achieve it but often at the
personal loss of others. Many examples include murdering for a gain of power, lying to improve your
wealth, or stealing to improve your lifestyle. These people all have the characteristics of ambition but
are using their ambition at the cost of others. They are using their ambition for gain while taking from
others. We find ambition at the heart of many scenes in the play Macbeth. In scene three we first learn
of Macbeth s desire to become king. Macbeth says this, If Chance will have me king, why, chance
may crown me Without my stir. (1,3, 143 144). In this quote, after Macbeth hears the witches
prophecy of him becoming king, Macbeth implies that he will gladly take the throne without question.
However, ambition consists of both desire and determination and Macbeth has not shown any
determination until Act two scene one when he says this I go, and it is done. The bell invites me. Hear
it not, Duncan, for it is a knell That summons thee to heaven or to hell. ( 2,1, 62 64). In this section of

Physical Analysis On Physical Forensics
Physical Forensics
One physical analysis technique that could be considered as physical forensics is finger printing.
Although technically from a biological trace, the analysis method used to establish finger print from
finger print at the crime scene is a very analytical and physically arduous process.
Finger printing
At a crime scene, the one thing that can never be fully covered up is the presence of finger prints.
Because of the oils we produce through our skin, our fingers leave prints on any imaginable surface,
including on another body. These finger prints are classified in many different ways in order to make
the extraction, storage and eventual cross reference of these fingerprints much easier for future
analysis purposes. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Types of finger prints
Because finger prints come in all shapes and sizes, it means that finger print evidence is often a very
accurate and reliable way at distinguishing the presence of a person at a scene. It is thought that the
chances of 2 people having the same fingerprints is around 1/64,000,000,000 that s 64 billion.
In terms of classification of finger prints, the actual trace itself can be distinguished by analyzing the
finger using the accepted terms for the patterns that all fingers exhibit. These include whorls which is
the circular shape, ridges and ridge endings which are unique in almost every way and also loops
which are the elongated bend shape which can originate from the left or the right of the finger. Other,
more rare characteristics of the finger print is the arch which is slightly raised lines and tented arches
which form a triangular looking fingerprint.
Today, prints are analysed by putting them through a system on the computer which measures the
different characteristics of the finger print from a selection of viewpoints in order to establish whether
the owner of the finger prints has their finger prints on the system. This will flag up if it is the case,
and show the culprit and their previous crimes/affiliations.
Recovering prints
Because of the composition of the prints, they are often fragile and can be damaged on contact to the
point where no analysis can take place. This means that

What Means Can Bureaucrats And Bureaucracies Be Held...
By whom and what means can bureaucrats and bureaucracies be held accountable for in public policy?
Bureaucrats and bureaucracies are held accountable by the people, the President and congress. The
courts review actions of legislative branches to ensure they are constitutional and legal. If a

Aims And Principles Of Critical Discourse Analysis
Aims and Principles of Critical Discourse Analysis
CDA as a particular hypothesis of language for examining text and discussions has got a few standards
and instruments. It is a drastically diverse kind of phonetics and its attributes are recognized from
other connected with sorts of (DA). It has distinctive and different controls to manage language
utilize, this fits for the social issues. There are several social issues in every general public and only
method for language is insufficient to handle these issues consequently the mixture utilization of
discourse is qualified to portray and investigation social issues, imbalance, sex, prejudice and force are
the primary matters which CDA manages them through its approach. Another standard of CDA is that
the methodology relies on upon dissecting and recognizable proof instead of concentrating on
language as a phonetic thing. History has proven time and again that a few orders of semantics
(pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and semantics) are included in the work of CDA however they got less
consideration than analyzing and understanding social issues. CDA is a compelling study pertinent

It offers a distinctive perspective on linguistic anthropology as well as cultural anthropology as a
whole. The main idea of this approach is to develop theories and techniques related to the analysis of
meaningful behavior in actual situations. Discursive practice concerns discourse in four ways. First
one it is affirmed that social experiences are built in a linguistic and discursive way. The second one is
that discourse is bounded to contexts. The third one is that discourse regarded as social practice. The
last one that the grasping the meaning is negotiable in interaction instead of not being permanent

Cancer Valley Essay
Cancer Valley as they called it, is an 85 mile stretch of the Mississippi River which runs from Baton
Rogue to New Orleans. It is a place where many petrochemical facilities and oil refineries are
clustered together. The problem, however, is that in between these clusters there are people who live
there, minorities mostly, who feel that this is some sort of discrimination. Not only that but they also
feel this poses a danger to their health as they believed were responsible for some of the health issues
they were experiencing such as headaches, asthma, neurological and muscular disorders and even
cancer. Structural interventions were used to try and resolve this. First, United States laws were used

Problems In English Oral Communication
English oral communicative ability According to Byrne (1986), oral communication is the process
between speakers and listeners. The speakers use their productive skill to change their thought into
appropriate language, and then the listeners use receptive skill to interpret the message from the
speakers. In English communication, the speakers need communicative competence which is the
ability of using or interpreting languages in appropriate way during the conversation. In other word,
the speakers need to know the purpose of their speaking and they have to use the right language to talk
with the right person (Hymes, 1981). According to Common European Framework (2001), the
communicative competence consists of three elements including linguistic competence, sociolinguistic
competence, and pragmatic competence. Revell (1979) also gave an opinion about communication,
and his opinion is related with Hymes s. He claims that the ability of communication ... Show more

Inhibition The first problem in English speaking is inhibition. Many students are often inhibited when
they try to speak English. According to Littlewood (2007), foreign language classroom can cause
inhibition and anxiety easily. The students are often worried about making mistakes, fearful of
criticism or embarrassment. 2. Lack of topical knowledge Rivers (1968) believes that sometimes the
students cannot express themselves because the teachers push them to speak in the topic that is not
suitable for them. They might have no idea how to use the grammar correctly, which vocabulary to
use, or what to say about the topic that teacher asks them to answer. 3. Low participation In a large
class, there is not enough time for every student to speak. Some students hardly or never participate in
any oral practice because there are too many students in the class. They can only listen what the others
say, but do not have an opportunity to express themselves. 4. Mother tongue

United States Political Culture
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STREGNTH
This was the party slogan for the political culture in George Orwell s novel, 1984; a stark, depressing
world where Big Brother is watching you at all times. The political culture of the Untied States,
thankfully, is a much more democratic and freeing environment. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness... is what we live by, not Freedom is slavery. The political culture of the United States is
made up of two main concepts: liberty and equality. These will be discussed in this paper.

This nation has made great strides in the past and will continue to make them in the future so that
every one will be treated and viewed as equal. The political climate that we enjoy today is much
different from the political climate of our origins. The United States has come a long way from being
under the rule of King George III. Although there are similar democracies around the world, the
United States is unique in the way that we conduct politics. What other countries around the world
regard liberty and equality as high as America? Our Declaration of Independence says it all Life,

Sir Isaiah Berlin s Analysis of Freedom in Two Concepts of Liberty Sir Isaiah Berlin is the author of one of the most important works on political philosophy written in the twentieth century Two Concepts of Liberty . In the essay, he distinguishes between two types of liberty. Negative liberty is simply being left alone to do whatever one wants to do, to be able to act and achieve without interference from other persons. Positive liberty is defined as being free to be one s own master, but also involves someone interfering with one s life to determine to an extent what one becomes, and how one becomes one s own master. Gerald MacCallum (1925 87) states that Berlin makes a mistake in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If I cannot afford to buy food to feed myself, then my freedom is restricted. However, if I cannot win a marathon because I haven t trained enough, then my freedom is not restricted. When Berlin makes a distinction between positive and negative liberty, he seemingly tries to fit many different ideas under two simplistic headings. The first idea that Berlin discusses is not being interfered with, as opposed to the ability or power to act in a certain way. No interference can be named formal freedom (which can be categorised as negative ), and amounts to x not being interfered with when trying to do or become y; for example, a person is formally free to buy a house, as there is no law barring this. Having the ability or power to act in a certain way can be named effective freedom (which can be categorised under the positive label), and it amounts to x having the power or capacity to do or be y; for example, a person is effectively free to buy a house only if he can afford to. The two ideas differ in that x can be formally free to do y but may not be effectively free to do y, e.g. a person is not stopped legally from buying a house but cannot afford to do so. Although there still happened to be racism, and prejudice, African Americans managed to become recognized and well known for their abilities. Bryant after not contributing his full abilities to the band from his slacking off was finally fired right after a Motown Christmas party in 1966. Right after Bryant left, David Ruffin came aboard. In Disgrace, David Lurie s evil is caused by his distorted viewpoints and in The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, all three cases are as a result of poverty. In The Bell Jar, Esther s evil suicidal attempts are caused by her narcissistic insanity; in The Crow, evil is an offset of Eric s traumatic experience and need for revenge; and in Fargo, evil arises as a result of bullying. Each character mentioned provides a different way of expressing the evil within them. The above definition gives us a basis in determining what research has revealed as evil s two root causes. Melanie Isaacs, on the other hand, is not a prostitute but a student of David s, who attracts David due to her purity and looks. David is unable to admit that he raped Melanie, trying to justify his actions by saying that she does not resist (Coetzee, 2009) and that he is merely acting as a servant of Eros (Coetzee, 2009). We are able to see how evil David is in the way that he never feels shame for his wrongdoings, despite being disgraced (publically shamed and being dismissed by the university). David claims that he was enriched by the experience (Coetzee, 2009) of raping Melanie and in court says I have said the words to you (Coetzee, 2009) showing the futility of the apology. The root of David s evilness is not deeply explored in the novel, but can be linked to his skewed mindset that women were made as an appendage to man and to be used by man. David s deep passion for poetry of the Romantic Era, has led him to want to follow in the footsteps of his role model, Byron, who was known to have been a womanizer, having ... Human development is a science that focuses on the observations regarding physical, cognitive and social behavior of humans throughout their lifespan. Social workers must be aware of the various dimensions that are part of normal development to help clients understand what is typical during each developmental stage. Using a multidimensional approach, the social worker is able to assess both strengths and risks factors of each evolving stage. Each stage of development involves reaching certain milestones. It s important to understand that sometimes these milestones are not reached due to environmental, personal or external factors that affect the normal process development. • 9. Poverty Inequality And Economic Growth The purpose of this essay is to investigate the extent in which poverty, inequality and economic growth are related. These three dimensions are regularly perceived as indices of the complex and multidimensional concept of economic development . This term is not black and white however: it is a concept that is more than just merely income analysis. Poverty can be broken down into two separate definitions: absolute and relative. Absolute poverty describes the position of an individual who is living on less than $2 per day and is incapable of obtaining the minimum levels of income, food, clothing healthcare, shelter and other essentials (Todaro Smith, 2015). Relative poverty on the other hand compares individuals means of living in different societies. Subsequently, levels of relative poverty will differ from country to country, for example, the United Kingdom and China. Inequality represents the uneven distribution of income within a region or country. Finally, economic growth is typically measured by gross national income (GNI). GNI is both the total domestic and foreign output declared by the inhabitants of a country (Todaro Smith, 2015). If there is an increase in the output of a nation, this growth should cause GDP per capita to increase simultaneously. With this expansion in incomes, individuals theoretically should move out of the absolute poverty level of $1.25 per day. The commoners sought protection which they received in exchange for produce. This exchange later developed into a system that included fiefs, contracts between peasants and their lords, which was then called feudalism (Feudalism Britannica). Feudalism was practiced on manors, land that met all the necessary needs of the people living on it, where it was called manorialism (Manorialism Britannica). Through feudalism and manorialism, a new era known as the Middle Ages emerged. Although historians may argue that feudalism handed ultimate authority to the elite, who could effortlessly manipulate their superiority, it established a safe, stable and organized society and strengthened the social structure militarily and politically. In this restaurant I observed elements of folk and popular culture which included the music that was playing there, which was mariachi band music which made the place feel more authentic to Mexico. The music from the mariachi band was a piece of their folk culture they had, because they used violins, trumpets, guitarron a spanish guitar used in most Spanish music, and a vihuela a five stringed guitar with a high pitch. Some of the popular culture that was there was the outfits the servers were wearing which was a plain old t shirt and some black pants, and it was more popular culture because nowadays servers wear a shirt and pants that match what the theme or idea of the restaurant is. I categorized the mariachi band as part of the folk culture because the instruments that they were using were traditional instruments used in Mexico to produce the Spanish sound. The servers outfits I categorized as popular culture because of the fact that servers in many restaurants nowadays wear the same clothing that is casual, making it an element of popular culture. Multinational corporations (MNCs) seek to transfer their home country human resource management (HRM) practices to their overseas subsidiary as to them it is just another approach towards globalisation. It can be an element of success for MNCs if they manage to transfer these HRM practices across their subsidiaries in an effective manner. An effective transition of these policies depends on the organisational, cultural, social and relational factors (Bartlett amp; Ghoshal 1998; Evans, Pucik amp; Barsoux 2002; Poedenphant 2002). The whole procedure of international strategy is from adopting the policies implemented from the parent company to the enhancement of the competencies developed at the subsidiary, which will complement the organization on the whole. International experience is also one of the factors that push a MNC to implement the home country HRM policies across their subsidiaries. It depends on how long a MNC has been active in their international operations that impact the nature of their decision while implementing HR policies across their subsidiaries. Having a lack of international experience, a MNC will make their subsidiaries adopt their home country policies (The effect of corporate level organisational factors on the transfer of human resource management practices: European and US MNCs and their Greek subsidiaries, Barbara Myloni,July 2006). A MNC with more international experience is less likely to adapt their home country policies as the more a firm gains international experience, the less dominant their home country HR policies become. Looking from the dependency theory s point of view, the need for control also pushes a MNC to implement their home based policies. The stronger the need is, the more the necessity of integrating these policies will grow, and hence there is a probability that the HR practice will resemble the home country practices. This story is about a sacrifice that takes place every year in which the heads of households draw for their families in order to see who wins and saves the town. The readers grow close to a character named Tessie who decides to speak her mind when it s too late. In the end, the townsfolk realise that what comes around goes around. Before the ceremony started, Tessie Hutchinson was almost late. Instead of apologizing, she joked and acted as if it was nothing. This day is one of the most important days of the year for the town folk, it should not be easily forgotten. When she finally arrived the first thing she said was, Clean forgot what day it was... and then I looked out the window and the kids was gone, and then I remembered it was the twenty seventh and came a running, instead of formally addressing the serious situation and apologizing, she gave an inadequate excuse. Tessie was so late that people knew that her priorities aren t in the right places. By the time she had gotten there, people started to think she wasn t going to show up without notice, we can recall a few people saying, Bill, she made it after all. Parenting Styles And Their Effects On Children Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Children We must all realize the impact we have on the world around us, whether it be an immediate effect or an action that releases a chain of events that is unforeseeable. Taking responsibility for the activities we partake in during everyday life is crucial for progressing in the future. This concept becomes much more actualized when we are raising our children. Children are undoubtedly the future of today. How we raise them will immediately impact what kind of lives they will have in the future, which in turn, will set up the world for years to come. Parents tend to want a stable, and more successful life for their kids. With this in mind, parents should practice reliable parenting styles to ensure their child s social, emotional, and intellectual development isn t compromised. Feudalism In Romantic Poetry A dictum from Heraclitus may illustrate the origin of romantic poetry, when we are awake we have a world in common, but when we are asleep each has his own world (Quoted by O Connell 35). The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with melancholy: dark and well lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and comfortable, snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets. The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled during this time. My parents home belonged to one realm. If one wanted an unsullied and ordinary life, one made sure one was in league with this world. The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language, promised and demanded different things. This world contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals and servant girls. • 37. Negative Ambition In Macbeth Negative ambition fills the minds of many people across the world. However, we are going to look at a specific example from the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The main character from this play is Macbeth who is struggling with an ambition to become the king of Scotland. This paper will demonstrate that Macbeth is an accurate example of negative ambition. Ambition is the desire for something and the determination to achieve that desire. Ambition can be classified in two different ways. The first, positive ambition, can be summed up as the desire to get better as a human. There are so many problems that can occur during a human s life on earth and through positive ambition one can help themselves overcome their problems. For instance if you take the situation of an individual with cancer. A majority of successful survivors of cancer have the desire to get back to normal health. To accomplish this the patients must go through a lot of pain and struggle but positive ambition can help them push through. The second classification of ambition is negative ambition. Negative ambition can be summed up as having the desire for something and the determination to achieve it but often at the personal loss of others. Many examples include murdering for a gain of power, lying to improve your wealth, or stealing to improve your lifestyle. These people all have the characteristics of ambition but are using their ambition at the cost of others. They are using their ambition for gain while taking from others. We find ambition at the heart of many scenes in the play Macbeth. In scene three we first learn of Macbeth s desire to become king. Macbeth says this, If Chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Without my stir. (1,3, 143 144). In this quote, after Macbeth hears the witches prophecy of him becoming king, Macbeth implies that he will gladly take the throne without question. However, ambition consists of both desire and determination and Macbeth has not shown any determination until Act two scene one when he says this I go, and it is done. The bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell That summons thee to heaven or to hell. ( 2,1, 62 64). In this section of Macbeth s soliloquy, Macbeth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In terms of classification of finger prints, the actual trace itself can be distinguished by analyzing the finger using the accepted terms for the patterns that all fingers exhibit. These include whorls which is the circular shape, ridges and ridge endings which are unique in almost every way and also loops which are the elongated bend shape which can originate from the left or the right of the finger. Other, more rare characteristics of the finger print is the arch which is slightly raised lines and tented arches which form a triangular looking fingerprint.
