Gold Rush Satire
In 1925, Charlie Chaplin created and starred in his own movie The Gold Rush. This movie is a
comical satire of the Gold Rush as well as a reflection of the general attitudes during The Great
Depression. The genre of film that The Gold Rush falls under is known as a silent film where there is
no dialogue. However, the music enhances the feelings and themes that Chaplin set to get across to his
audience. The attitude that Chaplin wanted the audience to grasp when he introduced his character, a
Lone Prospector, was clumsy and hopeful. This attitude was enhanced by the upbeat, cheerful music
playing each time the Lone Prospector was in a scene. Also, the Lone Prospector had some type of
spotlight on him on the set to highlight that he was the

Central Park Essay
Central Park
Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates of creating the park
primarily wealthy merchants and landowners admired the public grounds of London and Paris and
urged that New York needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation. A public
park, they argued, would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides and provide
working class New Yorkers with a healthy alternative to the saloon. After three years of debate over
the park site and cost, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to use the power
of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan. An irregular
terrain of swamps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After a new city charter in 1870 restored the park to local control, the mayor appointed park
commissioners. In 1857, the Central Park Commission held the country s first landscape design
contest and selected the Greensward Plan, submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park s
superintendent at the time, and Calvert Vaux, an English born architect and former partner of the
popular landscape gardener, Andrew Jackson Downing. The designers sought to create a pastoral
landscape in the English romantic tradition. Open rolling meadows contrasted with the picturesque
effects of the Ramble and the more formal dress grounds of the Mall (Promenade) and Bethesda
Terrace. In order to maintain a feeling of uninterrupted expanse, Olmsted and Vaux sank four
Transverse Roads eight feet below the park s surface to carry cross town traffic. Responding to
pressure from local critics, the designers also revised their plan s circulation system to separate
carriage drives, pedestrian walks, and equestrian paths. Vaux, assisted by Jacob Wrey Mould, designed
more than forty bridges to eliminate grade crossings between the different routes. The building of
Central Park was one of nineteenth century New York s most massive public works projects. Some
20,000 workers Yankee engineers, Irish laborers, German gardeners, and native born stonecutters
reshaped the site s topography to create the pastoral landscape. After blasting out rocky

4.1. Safety Evaluation with Respect to Formulations, Functionality, and Processing.
Human consumption of silkworm pupae is prevalent in many countries such as China, Japan, and
Thailand. It can be traced back to a thousand years ago in many African and Asian cultures 24. The
utilization of silkworm pupae in food is still a traditional practice25. Research shows that there are no
toxic effects, mutagenicity and abnormal effects related to silkworm pupae and they are safe for
human consumption26. Foodborne pathogens are one of the major public health concerns in
developing countries. In our target region, foodborne illnesses are common due to poor general
hygiene, lack of professional equipment and inadequate food handling at home27. In Ethiopia, the
average annual incidence level of foodborne illnesses is 5.8% and average death associated with

Government Privacy Analysis
How much do you know about the American government? Does the government respect the privacy of
their citizens? Is the government violating Americans privacy? In 2013 a guy named Edward Snowden
released government files that prove that the government has a file for every cell phone in America.
Meaning that every text message, photo, phone call, email, etc is being recorded, making it easier for
the government to track down anyone that they want. Americans privacy is being violated very
similarly to the privacy violations in 1984, a novel written by George Orwell. In the present day and in
1984 people could be easily tracked down and are being watched every second, of every day.
Personally I believe that the privacy shouldn t be violated for ... Show more content on

If anyone ever started to act suspicious or do unusual activity, the FBI will then pull up that person s
cell phone file, and review every text message, phone call, email, etc. Thanks to a guy named Edward
Snowden these files were released to show everyone the secret activity the government does behind
the people s backs. Edward Snowden worked for the NSA and had many important roles. When
Snowden came across these files he felt the need the documents because he believed that these types
of decisions should be determined by the public. And just like Edward Snowden I do strongly believe
that the government should not have made the decision of recording private information without
notifying us, the citizens. Even though these actions are meant to protect and to prevent, however this
is a total violation of privacy which is not ok.
In conclusion, every person with a cellular device does have a file that the government has just in
case. Cell phones are losing it s original purpose and should now be considered a tracking device. If
the government kept this secret, who knows what else they could be hiding. Personally it s frightening
to know that the government knows where you are, who you were with, how long you were with that
person, and when you went back home. Just like in 1984 you never know when Big Brother is

Essay on Congress And The Change In Term Limits
Congress and The Change in Term Limits
In 1994, for the first time in 40 years, Congress was drastically changed. The
Democratic majority was uprooted and new, lively, freshmen were instated with a job to undertake. As
part of the Republican=s AContract with America,@ these new Republicans had to revise the current
Congressional term limit status. In undertaking this task, these men and women ran into a seemingly
stone road block.
This roadblock consisted of long term, carreerists who were unwilling to change.
The problem was not that there were no Congressmen who were committed to real change elected in
1994 because there were, but Congress was highly dominated by long term careerists in both parties
who seemed to have more loyalty to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And now the Supreme Court refuses to allow the people to approve term limits. This fact shows the
importance of developing new strategies for subjecting members of the U.S. Congress to term limits.
There are many ways in which this could occur, but before one can decide which might be the most
effective, one must first realize why they are so necessary.
The election of 1994 was supposed to be one of dramatic change. Three dozen
Democratic incumbents fell, but the overall House reelection rate still ran roughly 90 percent with 314
of the 348 members remaining unmoved, and the Senate reelection rate ran 92 percent with 24 of the
26 members up for election unmoved.
Absolutely no Republican incumbents, no matter how flawed, lost in the election of 1994. These sad
statistics show that no matter revolutionary the voters get, most incumbents still win, and careerists
still largely dominate policy. Edward H. Crane states that, quot; Those who run for Congress these
days are generally those who find the prospect of spending a significant portion of their lives as a
politician to be an attractive option. Politicians are less likely to have a real life before entering
politics. Many political pros start out as state legislators in their early twenties and never stop. (Crane
(2), p. 251)
Validating this statement is Senator Warren Rudman, a Republican from New
Hampshire, who explained that he retired because quot;the longer you stay in public

The Effects Of Climate Change On Africa s Security...
The Lacuna in the Climate Conflict Literature
The extant literature shows two trends. First, a few large N studies which showed strong correlations
between climate and conflict used civil war datasets as the measure of the outcome variable. The use
of an aggregated country level civil war data may be missing the most important features of the
accuracy, degree, and severity of the impact of climate change on Africa s security environment. The
use of civil war and political violence datasets to capture the impact of climate change may produce
misleading outcomes. Unlike civil conflict and political violence, climate related conflicts may be
mirroring the ebb and flow of climatic conditions. Different from civil wars and political violence,
climate related conflicts may become intense during the drier months and recede during the rainy or
wet months of the year. Using aggregated country level civil war datasets to measure climate induced
conflicts misses the important nuances we need to determine cause and effect the causation linking
climate change to violent conflict, and exposes such analysis to the ecological fallacy trap. The
drawback of using aggregated data has been addressed by studies using sub state, micro level data,
and case studies. Most of the studies that used sub state data also reported connections between
climate and conflict, and most were situated in the Horn of Africa or in countries with histories of
volatilities. Finally, there are those who suggested

Napster was the first, very innovative music technology application that allowed users to download

and put it their own terms to avoid any copyright infringement but it ended badly on their part. This
disruptive technology was leading the market and had over 60 million users by 2001. Although very
similar technologies were soon after developed, Napster was still on top and lead the market. Many
users knew exactly what they wanted but getting it seemed to be the difficult part once Napster and the

In terms of the artists and musicians, I believe that although they started out as losers, in the end, they
ended up winning because for already discovered, well known singers, they are getting the royalties
they are owed and for new, up and coming artists, they are getting their name out there in a much less
expensive way than before and still making some sort of money to support their dream. The agents
and label companies will become winners as well through the transformations. The larger companies
will most likely lose some strength and then gain back once they begin to find new artists and those
artists begin to take off. The risk/reward of the digital market here will yield much more reward and
their financial strength from the start will help them be a winner here. I feel the biggest loser in
throughout the entire industry transformation is the packaging and CD production industry. Because
CDs are no longer at an all time high, they will no longer be needed. There is very little need for this
and it has almost become a niche market, barely used for music anymore, unless someone is burning
their own music onto a CD. Albums being created and sold solely onto a CD has decreased
substantially and within the next few years could become something in the past. This is the biggest
loser by far through the music industry transformation. Although customers might think they are

write and give attention of the proposals to improve the quality of service that consumers get when
they visit the center. Missing customer appointments:
It has been noticed that most of the customer appointments have been missing in the center s system.
The error was noted when the clients who came for service were either missing or the wrong date. In
the system, it showed the customer number, but there was no more information about the services they
want or which time.
Cause of the error:
To identifying and looking to rectify an error, it has to investigate the root source of the predicament.
The procedure is alluded to as the root cause scrutiny. The rationale of the investigation is to annihilate
or correct the source, thus preventing the inveterate of the predicament. The procedure should be done
on an everyday basis. The application of new processes that are well known to produce a methodical

alluded to as root source analysis.

The City Council performs three essential functions: representation, legislation, and oversight. If it

By recommending candidates for mayoral appointments, a City Councilor helps ensure that Lewisville

A Councilor needs to have a grasp of the complexities of the law, and an awareness of the risks and

legal and ethical solutions to reach a positive outcome for all concerned.
To fulfill its oversight and legislative responsibilities, the Council also enacts rules which affect the
quality of life in our neighborhoods. It must be able to perform independent research and to diligently
evaluate the information it receives from the city administration. If we want excellent, efficient

U.s. Foreign Policy Decisions
everyone, not only because of threats of terrorist attacks or the danger of war, but for far more
mundane reasons. (Kaufman pg. 3). Here Kaufman begins to unravel the differences between these
two types of foreign policy. The extraordinary are the issues surrounding war, terrorist attacks, cyber
warfare. The mundane, is as simple as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is allowed
entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman argues the
foreign policy decisions that most people know about and follow closely are those that are
extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although there appears to be
strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected in American culture.
As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we have
more access to information than we have ever had in the history of the world. One would think this
would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in some areas of
study, it is not the case in foreign policy. Mead addresses some of Americans views and the role they

policy stating one of the most remarkable features of contemporary U.S. foreign policy is the

I Am A True Believer That Commonwealth Is The Best Option...
I am a true believer that Commonwealth is the most perfect option for my homeland, Puerto Rico.
There has been an ongoing debate on the political status of Puerto Rico for years on whether it should
be a state or become independent, but I think it should be put to an end now because I am going to
prove to you the reason why it is best for our island to be a commonwealth. No matter what anyone
says I know that for my own island, we wouldn t survive as a state or as an independent nation,
therefore commonwealth is the best option for us. Since July 1952, Puerto Rico has been a
commonwealth of the U.S, which means that we are colonized under the United States but are still
able to be self governing. Commonwealth is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think this is the most important aspect of being a commonwealth because I don t have to sacrifice my
religion, culture, or language which is something very important to us, Puerto Ricans. Due to the
Jones Act of 1917, we were granted a U.S citizenship, allowing us to travel back and forth between the
U.S and Puerto Rico (Perez y Gonzalez 2011: 1843). This is very important to me and my family,
otherwise my family living in the United States would not be able to come and see us all the time and
vice versa! Therefore, I would never want to lose this benefit that the U.S has given us. The New
Progressive Party consists of those who want Puerto Rico to become a state. This is such a bad option
for an island like Puerto Rico because if we were to become a part of the United States, English would
have to be our primary language and why would I want to sacrifice my language just to become a
state? English is taught in Puerto Rican schools, but it is a foreign language to them. Less than 20% of
Puerto Ricans can speak English fluently, which would make integration into United States culture
very difficult. Not only does it affect language, but it also affects our Puerto Rican culture. I have no
doubt that becoming a state would cause a culture loss because of the assimilation that will happen.
One example of cultural integration would probably be that the Spanish language would

ABSTRACT
Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize winning female author whose writing style was mainly affected by
her aristocratic upbringing. Growing up Edith Wharton was friends with former President Theodore
Roosevelt. The two were often compared and both were said to have been self made men . Edith
Wharton s novels were often critically acclaimed until Ethan Frome was published. The novel was
said to be cruel and violent by critics and casual readers. In my opinion, Edith Wharton s Ethan Frome
is a great book that reveals the harsh realities of failed relationships hanging on by a thread combined
with the struggle of being poverty stricken. For my original piece, I will write a poem about Edith
Wharton s failed marriage that lasted 28 years, as if I were Edith Wharton after her divorce from
Edward Wharton. I chose to do a report on Edith Wharton because she was a female writer that
believed women were just as capable as men during a time when men were seen as superior in every
aspect to women, and also because she achieved much more than most male writers of her time. I
believe Edith Wharton s aristocratic upbringing had the main effect on her writing style.

Civil Rights And Social Movements
Civil rights and Social Movements in the Americas
Civil rights are the rights of individuals to be treated equally and free from discrimination. It allows
others to be free from these unfair treatments in many different settings such as one s education,
employment, and housing. Originally, the term Civil Rights referred to the efforts of achieving
equality for African Americans in all settings. However, today the term is used for all people whether
they are black, white, women, or men. It would also include Native Americans, African Americans,
and Feminists to be justly treated.
Native Americans in Canada, Latin America and United States were first truly encountered in the early
to mid 1940s. Prior to this the United States passed the Indian Act in 1876, this prohibited voting, and
Native Americans weren t allowed to drink or wander off their reservation without permission.
Although American Indians were indigenous to the Americas, they soon became one of many
minorities in their own home. Native Americans are a diverse group with hundreds of different tribes.
The American Indian s struggle for civil rights began almost as soon as colonists set foot in the
Americas. After the forefathers established the United States of America, the natives were denied their
basic civil rights for several years. Although they didn t have a fighting period like the African
American s civil rights movement, they still took measures to achieve their equal rights.
During the 1950s, the US

Asian American Identity Development Model
RCIDM and Multiculturalism
Having knowledge of the Racial/Cultural Identity Development Model will help counselors to become
more culturally competent. Although we know these phases, one must be aware of the cultures that
counselors will be working with and how one s beliefs can hinder the process. The five stages of the
Asian American Identity Development Model, developed by Sue and Sue, are: The ethnic awareness
stage, White identification stage, the awakening to the social political consciousness stage, redirection
stage, and the incorporation stage. Asian Americans prefer crisis oriented, brief, and solution oriented
approaches, and they are influenced by their families and culture. The fear of losing face to their peers
by seeking therapy will lead them to early termination of therapy. Asian cultures are typically high
context cultures in which gesture, body language, eye contact, pitch, intonation, word stress, and the
use of silence are as important as the actual words being spoken in conversation. Asians are typically
polite in social encounters whereas Americans, being very low context communicators, are
comfortable with very direct questions and answers and often seem abrupt to people from high context
cultures. The five stages of the Black Identity Development Model, originally developed by Cross,
are: The pre encounter stage, encounter stage, immersion emersion, internalization, and internalization

Biography of French Painter Jacques-Louis David Essay
My first choice of French painter, Jacques Louis David s work is Napoleon Crossing the Alps. As
important as the Church of the Savor on Blood was and still is important to Russia, Jacques Louis
David was important to revolutionary France. He lived in a very turbulent time in France s history. He
was a passionate supporter of French Revolution and the idea of overthrowing the monarchy. As a
French revolution came closer to reality, David turned away from a typical classical subject that he
was trained to paint and turned his brushes and an imagination towards depicting political events that
were surrounding him and France. One of the most iconic historical paintings has become Napoleon
Crossing the Alps. The work is neo classical, because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bethettes Monologue
I grew up dancing and tumbling at Judy Murtaugh dance studio. I was consistently surrounded by
bethettes at a young age. Growing up, my passion for dance grew, and so did my dream of being a
bethette. My dance teachers always encouraged me to tryout once I was old enough. My first year of
bethettes has been the best time of my life, although it was also one of the hardest. During this past
season, I lost my mother. Everything in my life seemed completely chaotic, except for bethettes.
Bethettes was the one thing I still had that made me genuinely happy and helped me through this
difficult time. The girls were so supportive and the squad leaders were so inspirational. All of the
squad leaders called me and came to the funeral. They constantly ... Show more content on

I grew extremely close to them. That is what leadership and support truly is. Not one person
completely understood what I was feeling, yet every single one of them reached out. I want to do that
for someone as well. Most likely it will not be the same circumstances but, being able to lead and
support a group of girls and help them in anyway possible is a new dream I have obtained. If granted
this amazing opportunity, there would be a few things I would like to address and change for the better
of bethettes. The first being talking. Just in my first year of bethettes I have observed talking and side
conversations being a great issue at practices. It is difficult to get all the girls to be silent and
cooperative while learning or running routines. As a squad leader, I would take initiative to not only
set the example for my squad, but remind them to

Data And The Standard Model Of Its Representation As Well...
In this Chapter, we present the background needed to understand the work proposed in this thesis. As
our research mainly concerns with securing provenance, Section 2.1 will cover provenance data and
the standard model of its representation as well as the applications of securing provenance. Section 2.2
introduces graph databases that will be used later in storing provenance in our prototype. Section 2.3
explores workflow systems and workflow provenance. Section 2.4 illustrates the main security
principles that will be tackled in the thesis and inference problem that attacks privacy. Finally, Section
2.5 summarizes the main content of this chapter.
2.1 What is provenance?
Provenance (aka lineage) is a descriptive metadata (i.e. data about data). It specifies not only the
properties of an object but also the history of deriving this object. As provenance touches many
different domains and applications, it has different definitions that represent different views of
provenance such as Description of the origins of data and the process by which it arrived at the
database [20], Metadata recording the process of experiment workflows, annotations, and notes about
experiments [50].
The rationale behind provenance has been long established, for example log files and metadata, but
the term provenance is recent and it is gaining popularity particularly in workflow systems.
Descriptive metadata only becomes part of provenance when one also specifies its relationship to
deriving an

Similarities Between Anne Of Green Gables And Cheaper
The two short stories Anne of Green Gables and Cheaper by the Dozen have fathers who both truly
care for their children in their own way. The two fathers have some similarity, however, they have
some differences as well. In the text Anne of Green Gables has a father like who s name is Mattew
who needs help with his farm, Green Gables. Mattew and his sister both run the farm but are starting
to need some help with it. In the text, it states It s a boy I ve come for. He should be here. Mrs.
Alexander Spencer was to bring him over from Nova Scotia for me. This shows that he was expecting
an orphan boy not an orphan girl and needs help with the farm. In the text Cheaper by the Dozen, the

Conflict Between Northern Uganda And The Civil War Essay
When I think about conflict in Northern Uganda, I vividly recall the distant look and aloofness that my
childhood neighbor and friend, Grace, always donned. My primary school was entirely a boarding
school affair. We left the comfort of our parents homes to move to an entirely new community, living
with other children my age, 7 years, sharing, caring and looking out for each other. Yet, deep down,
each of us had their untold story. Grace s story, which she told, piece by piece, a little unsure whether
she could trust me, was different. She talked about one of the biggest and longest conflicts was in
Northern Uganda, a civil war by the Lord s Resistance Army led by Kony .They carried out
widespread abduction, mutilation and kidnapping of children who became child soldiers, sex slaves
and child mothers. Some were civilians with fresh bullet wounds who had been caught in a rebel
ambush; others were land mine victims. Her mother was a nurse at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital,
so she spent most of her childhood at the medical quarters. Each time the ambulance arrived at the
hospital; local residents would rush to the hospital gate to observe in sorrow as dying victims were
rolled into the surgery ward. Watching this daily routine was the beginning of her distrust in humanity
and social withdrawal. I had no help to offer besides a listening ear.
The more she talked about her ordeal, the more she opened up. There was always a glimmer of hope
in her eyes after telling her story.

The History of Insane Asylums Essay
What comes to mind when you hear the words insane asylum ? Do such terms as lunatic, crazy, scary,
or even haunted come to mind? More than likely these are the terminology that most of us would use
to describe our perception of insane asylums. However, those in history that had a heart s desire to
treat the mentally ill compassionately and humanely had a different viewpoint. Insane asylums were
known for their horrendous treatment of the mentally ill, but the ultimate purpose in the reformation of
insane asylums in the nineteenth century was to improve the treatment for the mentally ill by
providing a humane and caring environment for them to reside. The mentally ill were treated very
inhumanly in the early insane asylums. Some of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This one swung the mentally ill person around while he/she was in a harness. This treatment
supposedly calmed the nerves . (Gray). Needless to say the treatment of the insane was horrid and
unbelievable. In the eighteenth century at Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, the public could pay a
penny for a privilege to watch the freaks ; they could poke the caged patients with a long stick
(Taylor). Overcrowding was a huge issue in the insane asylums. In 1900 based on the authority of the
Lunacy Commissioners report, it was stated that there was one registered lunatic per every three
hundred people. (Chapman 164). Danvers State Hospital was built in 1878 to house 500 patients. This
institution had over 2300 patients at its peak in the 1940s (Taylor). The over population of insane
asylums began to deteriorate them and make them some of the most horrible places that existed. The
conditions in these institutions were barely livable. The workers were also mean to the patients and
did many awful things to them. There were too many patients and not enough nurses and doctors. This
made the nurses work harder and put a lot more stress on them ( Pennhurst State ). In the 1950s, the
Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was occupied by over 2500 people. However, it was built to occupy
only 250 people. The conditions were so filthy that occupants began to get sick and die. Some people

Outlasting the SARS Epidemic
Introduction
When speaking of epidemics, the memories which come to mind are different for different people; for
those who lived in Hong Kong in 2002 2003, images that spring up would almost invariably be of
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, the epidemic known to man as SARS in short. Sharing with us
the three letter acronym (SAR) which was given to us by our leaders in China, this ordeal has left its
mark on our city in more ways than one. It had caused a widespread wave of mysophobia and health
consciousness among the Hong Kong people, which outlasted the SARS epidemic but is probably
slowly waning. It has also raised the awareness of the government of the importance of the control of
infectious diseases, both in the community and in the clinical setting. Most importantly, SARS showed
us what works and what needs improving in terms of infection control in the event of a major
epidemic.
Originally starting in November 2002 in Guangdong Province of China, the SARS coronavirus has
since infected as many as 8422 persons worldwide, with a total of 1755 patients infected, among
which 300 unfortunately succumbed to this disease. (1) Apart from being a major epidemic in the
medical history of Hong Kong and a health threat of global concern, another aspect of SARS worth
noting is the occurrence of nosocomial outbreaks. SARS was the cause of nosocomial outbreaks in
Canada, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore. (2) The impact of nosocomial outbreak in an

Benefits and Problems Associated With Urbanisation
What are the Benefits and Problems Associated with Urbanisation? In the years following the
Industrial Revolution, the practice of urbanisation became much more prevalent. Urbanisation has
lead to an increase in the population of cities while leading to a decline in rural population. The effects
of Urbanisation can be both positive and negative, whether it is on the peoples, the society or the
environment. The practice of urbanisation has brought with it, many arguments as to whether it is a
positive or negative phenomena. Throughout the course of this discussion we will look deeper in to
what urbanisation really is. We will also analyse the arguments, and we will begin to unpack how
urbanisation positively effects the environment as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Urbanisation has become somewhat of a fast growing phenomenon in the last 40 years especially, but
it was not always the case. In the year 1800 only 5% of the global population was urbanized (DeVries,
1984) but following the agricultural and industrial revolutions, that number grew. In England for
example the urban population jumped from 17% in 1801 to 72% in 1891 (Watson, 1993), and
according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population division, in
2011 52.% of people were living in urban areas worldwide (United Nations, 2012). The same
department estimate that by the year 2050 close to 70% of the worlds population will be living in
urban areas, which will equate to over 6 billion people (United Nations, 2012). The areas with the
highest urban populations currently are those in Latin America, with 76% of the population living in
urban areas in the year 2000, however South and East Asia are set to have the biggest jump in urban
population in the next 40 years (UN,2004). Today the largest and fastest growing cities are in
developing countries (Envio Facts 2001).This data shows that urbanisation is responsible for massive
growth, obviously in urban settlements. This massive growth is bound to have some effects on the
environment both negative and positive. Environmental Problems Associated with Urbanisation.

Fellowship Of The Ring Heroism Analysis
In J.R.R Tolkien s work, The Fellowship of The Ring, Tolkien redefines the concept of heroism by
turning an ordinary person into an unlikely hero. The traits of a typical hero have been the same
throughout literature s history. The hero of a story has been often the strongest, wisest, and most
courageous character in the book. He or she likely defeats evil on their own, and turns into the greatest
savior. Even the very first poems ever written, like Beowulf, follow the typical hero pattern. Tolkien
experiences in life, perhaps, made him desire something different. At a very young age of four,
Tolkien s father died. Then the two brothers became orphans in 1904, due to their mother dying. This
left Tolkien confused and lonely. In 1911, he got his first class degree in Germanic languages and
literature, which came easy to him. Tolkien left and served in World War I as a Lieutenant. After only
four months of being in trench warfare, where he was surrounded by blood and death, he was released
due to an illness. Going back to what he had a passion for, he became a Professor at Oxford
University. Between all his other small writings, is when he developed The Fellowship of The Ring in
1954. According to Biography.com, it was partially inspired by ancient European myths, with its own
sets of maps, lore and languages. Which in other words, were his life experiences. Throughout the
story, Tolkien brings little parts of his life to the picture. He aspired to create a world where

Essay on History and Philosophy of Science
History and Philosophy of Science
The world of science, as we know it today, is a difficult subject to grasp. So many new ideas are
present and these new ideas are not interchangeable. Some parts do work together although as a whole
they don t fully coincide with each other. The three basic ideas that science is now based upon come
from Newton, Einstein, and Hawking. I call these ideas/theories new based on what I classify the state
of the scientific community of today. After looking at what is going on in science, it is clear to me that
the scientific world is in a crisis state. According to Kuhn, a crisis state is when science is in the
middle of choosing a particular paradigm to work under. For scientists, there is a general theme ...

Newton had given the world what we now know as physics. For the past three hundred years
Newtonian Mechanics have been taught to every student aspiring to elevate their minds. Newtonian
Mechanics were the end all to the questions that had plagued thinkers since the beginning of time. The
key difference is that Newton was never exposed to the world of science that technology had made
prevalent to the likes of an Einstein or Hawking, or even my colleague studying neuro surgery at John
s Hopkins University. When Newton was sitting under his apple tree conjuring up ideas for how and
why he did not fly off into space or why the harder you hit something the farther it goes, technology
was moving along at the rate of most people s grandmothers in their walkers. The scientists that had
surrounded Newton knew only of what they could see. Their were no people looking to the far ends of
the galaxies and their were no people looking in to the unseen cells that make up everything that we
can see. Basically, Newton did not have a reason to explain what he was not aware of. He did have
quite good reason, however, to explain why he got a bump on his head from that ripe apple that no
longer needed the shelter of the tree. According to Shlain, Newton set the world he knew to mechanics
and set the parameters for the new and final, well what was thought to be the final paradigm of the
world. Then in 1905,

My Journey
The journey of life is not meant to be feared and planned; it s meant to be traveled and enjoyed.
Waking up every morning, I still can t believe it s been almost two years since I moved to America. I
mean it s crazy, one year ago all the street signs are in Chinese and the next thing you know I wake up
in a world of English. I can still remember the day I step off the airplane, it was a day that changed my
life. Some of my friends were amazed by how quickly I adapted to America, but that s not true. I had a
transition year when I was 13. I have to say; I m feeling very different from two years ago when I first
walk into a world where everyone speaks English. What most of my friends don t know is that I didn t
go to Jericho straightway; I was in Syosset for 8th grade. I remember walking into the building for the
first time. My heart was pounding; I was sweating. I reported to the administrator, and I was taken to
the classroom by the social study teacher (kind of a leading teacher of the class). I walked through the
classroom door, and I sort of had a panic attack when everybody looked at me. God, I really wish I
was dead or something at that moment. I have to say how I landed in that school was a mystery to
solve. In the entire school building including staff members, I m probably the only atheist there. Every
Wednesday the whole class spends about 3 periods on Mass. On my first Wednesday there, which is
surprising also my first day there, I felt

The Rise Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism
The rise of Zionism and Arab Nationalism in the nineteenth century triggered major political tensions
in the region of Palestine. The conflict among the Zionists and Arab Nationalists is primarily due to
the politics of territory and is essentially not comprised of religious opposition. In fact, before the
advent of Zionism and Arab Nationalism, Jews and Palestinians shared a local identity due to mutual
tolerances. This identity, which took precedence over religion, created a vivacious community with its
own unique set of traditions and customs shared among the Jews, Muslims and Christians. However,
following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Zionists whom were seeking a safe haven from
Jewish prejudices in mainly Eastern Europe, proclaimed their return to Palestine. Zionists sought the
territory of Palestine as the official land of the Jews because of their ancient homeland ties.
Furthermore, as Zionism progressed, Arabs Nationalists were threatened by the ideology and the vast
Jewish immigration to Palestine. In the Arab point of view, Zionism emerged as a European
movement, which appeared to be another attempt by Western imperialism to subordinate Muslims to
Europeans. Although Arab Nationalism and Zionism were similar in nature, these two identities were
destined to clash primarily due to their irreconcilable nationalistic aspirations and cultural
characteristics.

The Budget Of The NASA Budget
In the 2017 fiscal year (Oct. 2016 Sept. 2017), the budget for NASA was 19 billion US dollars [1].
However, the total budget for the United States in 2017 is 3,650 billion US dollars [2] making the
NASA budget only .52% of the United States budget for the 2017 fiscal year. Even though 19 billion
US dollars seem like a large amount of money, in comparison to 1966, the height of the Apollo
mission, the budget for NASA was 5.9 billion United States dollars [3] which was .83% of the
National budget of 708 billion dollars [4]. Also, with the 122 million citizens [5] reported to pay

Only 10% of the budget is going to go to space technology because even though there is still a need to
continue developing technologies for space, it does not need the same funds as other sections, and
without any large space missions in the near future it is not as pressing as other categories like science,
exploration, and space operations.
The third category is exploration which will receive 27% of the budget. The exploration budget will
go to projects like space transportation systems and human missions to the moon and mars. Projects
such as these require a large portion of the budget due to their expensive nature, but despite the cost,
these missions gain public support. Without such missions, the public would not have supported the
United States spending billions of dollars on scientific research. Additionally, these missions help gain
an understanding of the universe. The fourth category is Aeronautics which will receive 7% of the
budget. Aeronautic projects would include new aircraft and new air traffic control systems. This
category is similar to space technology where there still needs to be research in the field but it does not
require as much money as other parts of NASA. Also, there are more companies in the private sector
of aeronautic that will be researching similar topics. Therefore to save money for different products
aeronautics received the lowest part of the budget. Lastly, space operations will receive 26% of the

Comparing The Pentagram And Pentacle Symbols
The Pentagram and Pentacle Symbolism, 1, Explain It, Kristin Hitchcock With the rise of interest in
Wiccan and Paganism, there has also been a rise in the misunderstanding of certain symbols. Two of
these symbols, the pentagram and pentacle, have perhaps more misunderstanding than most. Many
modern people consider them both symbols of evil and satanic worship. When they imagine either one
of these symbols, they commonly see them being used in blood sacrifices or black magick. However,
these symbols are actually connected with none of these concepts. Instead, they have a long history
and have been used by cultures for centuries to represent all sorts of things from the five elements to
the five wounds of Christ. The Pentagram is defined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has been used as a sacred symbol since ancient times by many different cultures from Egypt to
India. In many ancient cultures, the number five was sacred and had great religious significance. This
can be seen most easily in the myths of the ancient Celts, where the number five appeared numerous
times. Ireland had five great roads, five provinces, and five paths of law. In another culture, the Greeks
specifically, the Pythagoreans considered the pentagram to be a symbol of man, because of the
fivefold division of man s body (right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, head). They also taught that it
represented to forces that made up the universe air, water, fire, earth, and spirit. This symbolism has
persisted for centuries and is still used widely today by modern Pagans. The pentacle, while it can
represent some of the pentagram s associations, has various other meanings as well. With the addition
of the circle, it becomes a symbol of protection, and is commonly used by modern Pagans in this
sense. When added to the pentagram s symbolism of the five elements, however, the circle can also
cause the pentacle to represent unity and oneness with the universe. However, a pentacle also refers to
a solid, plate like object that is commonly found on many Wiccan altars. In this context, it represents
earth and is used to consecrate ritual

The Role Of An Aging Population In The United States
The United States population over 65 years of age is increasing as the baby boomers reach retirement
age. Greater life expectancy is a result of people living longer with better nutrition, healthcare, and
management of chronic diseases. In the primary care setting, where I work, we have a large patient
population of older adults. Caring for middle aged and elderly patients requires greater time and
intensity than caring for most younger patients. It is not unusual for an elderly patient to have six or
more chronic conditions and twelve or more prescription medications which require coordination and
monitoring. Updated HIPAA consents and Health Care Proxy documents are essential to providing
seamless care. Since primary care involves repeated encounters with patients over time, I am quite
familiar with many of my patients and their families and, when appropriate, assist families to assure
that these are documents are current. Additionally, I have had personal experience caring for an aging
family member. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We constructed an in law apartment for her which allowed her to maintain a sense of independence

that we made to do this. In hindsight, despite the difficulties, this was the best decision for our

Advertising For Advertising
How much are ads part of everyday life? The New York Times recorded a study by Yankelovich, a
market research firm, and they estimated that people living in a city see up to 5,000 or more
advertisements a day. By the same token, children are heavily exposed to advertising, and most of the
ads today are directed right at them. Advertising to children is a big part of the market today.
Therefore, advertisers should not market to children because it is unethical. It can influence children s
behavior in a negative fashion, and markets can exploit children, and can use the media to reach
children at young ages even though they are not able to understand its intent. Ads can influence and
affect a child s behavior. With this in mind, marketers tapped into the children s market and figured it
would boost their revenue. It all starts when a child is very young. According to the article How
Marketers Target Kids children at six months of age can form mental images of corporate logos and
mascots. Brand loyalties can be established as early as age two... Not to mention, marketers will create
campaign ads so children will use pestering behavior to get a certain product, which starts at a young
age as well ( How Marketers Target Kids ). Marketers want children to be bothersome whenever they
want something and to continue this behavior. To emphasize this fact YTV Kids and Tweens Report in
2008 found results saying kids have almost 100% control when choosing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and

The Effects Of Classical Music On Music
What is defined as good or real music? How does an individual come to define that? Many would say
that classical music is real music since it is the basis of music that is created today and it has lasted
through time. It is still heard today, one of the first types of music to last. Others may strongly
disagree; even though it has stood the test of time what actually makes this the sole definition of good
music? It doesn t, there really is not a true universal definition. There are multiple views on what is
considered real or good and that is what needs to be brought to attention, that there is not a single
wrong or right in this field. Merriam Webster defines good as adequate or satisfactory ( Good ). There
are billions of different definitions of good music because each definition of the music found to be
satisfactory is created by a different individual. Music taste is largely based on opinion and where that
opinion comes from is what is important. Everyone is different, so psychologically some people find
one type of music more appealing over another, this taste is also influenced by the environment
someone grows up in.
Being able to form opinions is an important aspect of life that humans develop as they age. Of course
not everyone will share the same views, but that is what makes everyone unique. There are countless
types of music in the world, and everyone is affected by music in one way or another. Once opinions
on music are formed, however, there

Evaluation Of The American Counseling Association
Self Evaluation The American Counseling Association (2014) defines counseling as a professional
relationship that empowers diverse individuals to meet their goals in various areas of their life. I view
counseling as a ministry that is designed to help individuals acquire the skills necessary to deal with
life experiences and foster positive relationships, and establish and complete goals. According to
Flanagan Flanagan (2014), establishing a positive rapport is essential before developing assessments
and interventions (p.7). Therefore, I will take the necessary steps in building positive rapports with my
clients. In order to be able to assist culturally diverse clients counselors should have a strong sense of
self awareness. Counselors who do not possess a high level of self awareness will hinder the progress
of their clients (Corey, Corey, and Callanan, 2011, p. 44). Therefore, it is very important that I am
aware of my areas of unresolved issues or biases. In effort to learn more about myself, I recently
completed three personality assessments, Myers Briggs Type Indicator, Gallup Strengths Finder and
Strong Interest Inventory. They revealed a plethora of information about me, some of which was
rather surprising. The Myers Briggs Personality indicator identified my personality type as ENTP.
According to Sharf (2013), ENTP personality types are described as quick, ingenious, stimulating,
alert, outspoken, and resourceful in solving challenging problems (p.150). I

This movie is a comical satire of the Gold Rush as well as a reflection of the general attitudes during The Great Depression. The genre of film that The Gold Rush falls under is known as a silent film where there is no dialogue. However, the music enhances the feelings and themes that Chaplin set to get across to his audience. The attitude that Chaplin wanted the audience to grasp when he introduced his character, a Lone Prospector, was clumsy and hopeful. This attitude was enhanced by the upbeat, cheerful music playing each time the Lone Prospector was in a scene. • 4. Central Park Essay Central Park Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates of creating the park primarily wealthy merchants and landowners admired the public grounds of London and Paris and urged that New York needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation. A public park, they argued, would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides and provide working class New Yorkers with a healthy alternative to the saloon. After three years of debate over the park site and cost, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to use the power of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan. An irregular terrain of swamps ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After a new city charter in 1870 restored the park to local control, the mayor appointed park commissioners. In 1857, the Central Park Commission held the country s first landscape design contest and selected the Greensward Plan, submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park s superintendent at the time, and Calvert Vaux, an English born architect and former partner of the popular landscape gardener, Andrew Jackson Downing. The designers sought to create a pastoral landscape in the English romantic tradition. Open rolling meadows contrasted with the picturesque effects of the Ramble and the more formal dress grounds of the Mall (Promenade) and Bethesda Terrace. In order to maintain a feeling of uninterrupted expanse, Olmsted and Vaux sank four Transverse Roads eight feet below the park s surface to carry cross town traffic. Responding to pressure from local critics, the designers also revised their plan s circulation system to separate carriage drives, pedestrian walks, and equestrian paths. Vaux, assisted by Jacob Wrey Mould, designed more than forty bridges to eliminate grade crossings between the different routes. The building of Central Park was one of nineteenth century New York s most massive public works projects. Some 20,000 workers Yankee engineers, Irish laborers, German gardeners, and native born stonecutters reshaped the site s topography to create the pastoral landscape. After blasting out rocky ... In conclusion, every person with a cellular device does have a file that the government has just in case. Cell phones are losing it s original purpose and should now be considered a tracking device. If the government kept this secret, who knows what else they could be hiding. • 10. Essay on Congress And The Change In Term Limits Congress and The Change in Term Limits In 1994, for the first time in 40 years, Congress was drastically changed. The Democratic majority was uprooted and new, lively, freshmen were instated with a job to undertake. As part of the Republican=s AContract with America,@ these new Republicans had to revise the current Congressional term limit status. In undertaking this task, these men and women ran into a seemingly stone road block. This roadblock consisted of long term, carreerists who were unwilling to change. The problem was not that there were no Congressmen who were committed to real change elected in 1994 because there were, but Congress was highly dominated by long term careerists in both parties who seemed to have more loyalty to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And now the Supreme Court refuses to allow the people to approve term limits. This fact shows the importance of developing new strategies for subjecting members of the U.S. Congress to term limits. There are many ways in which this could occur, but before one can decide which might be the most effective, one must first realize why they are so necessary. The election of 1994 was supposed to be one of dramatic change. Three dozen Democratic incumbents fell, but the overall House reelection rate still ran roughly 90 percent with 314 of the 348 members remaining unmoved, and the Senate reelection rate ran 92 percent with 24 of the 26 members up for election unmoved. Absolutely no Republican incumbents, no matter how flawed, lost in the election of 1994. These sad statistics show that no matter revolutionary the voters get, most incumbents still win, and careerists still largely dominate policy. Edward H. Crane states that, quot; Those who run for Congress these days are generally those who find the prospect of spending a significant portion of their lives as a politician to be an attractive option. Politicians are less likely to have a real life before entering politics. Many political pros start out as state legislators in their early twenties and never stop. (Crane (2), p. 251) Validating this statement is Senator Warren Rudman, a Republican from New Hampshire, who explained that he retired because quot;the longer you stay in public ... • 11. The Effects Of Climate Change On Africa s Security... The Lacuna in the Climate Conflict Literature The extant literature shows two trends. First, a few large N studies which showed strong correlations between climate and conflict used civil war datasets as the measure of the outcome variable. The use of an aggregated country level civil war data may be missing the most important features of the accuracy, degree, and severity of the impact of climate change on Africa s security environment. The use of civil war and political violence datasets to capture the impact of climate change may produce misleading outcomes. Unlike civil conflict and political violence, climate related conflicts may be mirroring the ebb and flow of climatic conditions. Different from civil wars and political violence, climate related conflicts may become intense during the drier months and recede during the rainy or wet months of the year. Using aggregated country level civil war datasets to measure climate induced conflicts misses the important nuances we need to determine cause and effect the causation linking climate change to violent conflict, and exposes such analysis to the ecological fallacy trap. The drawback of using aggregated data has been addressed by studies using sub state, micro level data, and case studies. Most of the studies that used sub state data also reported connections between climate and conflict, and most were situated in the Horn of Africa or in countries with histories of volatilities. Finally, there are those who suggested ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In terms of the artists and musicians, I believe that although they started out as losers, in the end, they ended up winning because for already discovered, well known singers, they are getting the royalties they are owed and for new, up and coming artists, they are getting their name out there in a much less expensive way than before and still making some sort of money to support their dream. The agents and label companies will become winners as well through the transformations. The larger companies will most likely lose some strength and then gain back once they begin to find new artists and those artists begin to take off. The risk/reward of the digital market here will yield much more reward and their financial strength from the start will help them be a winner here. I feel the biggest loser in throughout the entire industry transformation is the packaging and CD production industry. Because CDs are no longer at an all time high, they will no longer be needed. There is very little need for this and it has almost become a niche market, barely used for music anymore, unless someone is burning their own music onto a CD. Albums being created and sold solely onto a CD has decreased substantially and within the next few years could become something in the past. The mundane, is as simple as the labels on your clothing, but as complex as who is allowed entry into the U.S.. These topics do not elicit as much of a reaction, because as Kaufman argues the foreign policy decisions that most people know about and follow closely are those that are extraordinary because the stakes appear to be so high. (Kaufman pg. 3). Although there appears to be strong evidence suggesting the importance of foreign policy, that is not reflected in American culture. As noted above, this is strongly related to the perceived value of the issues. In today s world we have more access to information than we have ever had in the history of the world. One would think this would lead to a more informed and educated public. While this could be the case in some areas of study, it is not the case in foreign policy. There has been an ongoing debate on the political status of Puerto Rico for years on whether it should be a state or become independent, but I think it should be put to an end now because I am going to prove to you the reason why it is best for our island to be a commonwealth. No matter what anyone says I know that for my own island, we wouldn t survive as a state or as an independent nation, therefore commonwealth is the best option for us. Due to the Jones Act of 1917, we were granted a U.S citizenship, allowing us to travel back and forth between the U.S and Puerto Rico (Perez y Gonzalez 2011: 1843). This is very important to me and my family, otherwise my family living in the United States would not be able to come and see us all the time and vice versa! Therefore, I would never want to lose this benefit that the U.S has given us. The New Progressive Party consists of those who want Puerto Rico to become a state. This is such a bad option for an island like Puerto Rico because if we were to become a part of the United States, English would have to be our primary language and why would I want to sacrifice my language just to become a state? English is taught in Puerto Rican schools, but it is a foreign language to them. Less than 20% of Puerto Ricans can speak English fluently, which would make integration into United States culture very difficult. ABSTRACT Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize winning female author whose writing style was mainly affected by her aristocratic upbringing. Growing up Edith Wharton was friends with former President Theodore Roosevelt. The two were often compared and both were said to have been self made men . Edith Wharton s novels were often critically acclaimed until Ethan Frome was published. The novel was said to be cruel and violent by critics and casual readers. In my opinion, Edith Wharton s Ethan Frome is a great book that reveals the harsh realities of failed relationships hanging on by a thread combined with the struggle of being poverty stricken. For my original piece, I will write a poem about Edith Wharton s failed marriage that lasted 28 years, as if I were Edith Wharton after her divorce from Edward Wharton. I chose to do a report on Edith Wharton because she was a female writer that believed women were just as capable as men during a time when men were seen as superior in every aspect to women, and also because she achieved much more than most male writers of her time. As our research mainly concerns with securing provenance, Section 2.1 will cover provenance data and the standard model of its representation as well as the applications of securing provenance. Section 2.2 introduces graph databases that will be used later in storing provenance in our prototype. Section 2.3 explores workflow systems and workflow provenance. Section 2.4 illustrates the main security principles that will be tackled in the thesis and inference problem that attacks privacy. Finally, Section 2.5 summarizes the main content of this chapter. 2.1 What is provenance? Provenance (aka lineage) is a descriptive metadata (i.e. data about data). It specifies not only the properties of an object but also the history of deriving this object. As provenance touches many different domains and applications, it has different definitions that represent different views of provenance such as Description of the origins of data and the process by which it arrived at the database [20], Metadata recording the process of experiment workflows, annotations, and notes about experiments [50]. Sharing with us the three letter acronym (SAR) which was given to us by our leaders in China, this ordeal has left its mark on our city in more ways than one. It had caused a widespread wave of mysophobia and health consciousness among the Hong Kong people, which outlasted the SARS epidemic but is probably slowly waning. It has also raised the awareness of the government of the importance of the control of infectious diseases, both in the community and in the clinical setting. Most importantly, SARS showed us what works and what needs improving in terms of infection control in the event of a major epidemic. The traits of a typical hero have been the same throughout literature s history. The hero of a story has been often the strongest, wisest, and most courageous character in the book. He or she likely defeats evil on their own, and turns into the greatest savior. Even the very first poems ever written, like Beowulf, follow the typical hero pattern. Tolkien experiences in life, perhaps, made him desire something different. At a very young age of four, Tolkien s father died. Then the two brothers became orphans in 1904, due to their mother dying. This left Tolkien confused and lonely. In 1911, he got his first class degree in Germanic languages and literature, which came easy to him. Tolkien left and served in World War I as a Lieutenant. After only four months of being in trench warfare, where he was surrounded by blood and death, he was released due to an illness. • 32. Essay on History and Philosophy of Science History and Philosophy of Science The world of science, as we know it today, is a difficult subject to grasp. So many new ideas are present and these new ideas are not interchangeable. Some parts do work together although as a whole they don t fully coincide with each other. The three basic ideas that science is now based upon come from Newton, Einstein, and Hawking. I call these ideas/theories new based on what I classify the state of the scientific community of today. After looking at what is going on in science, it is clear to me that the scientific world is in a crisis state. According to Kuhn, a crisis state is when science is in the middle of choosing a particular paradigm to work under. For scientists, there is a general theme ... For the past three hundred years Newtonian Mechanics have been taught to every student aspiring to elevate their minds. Newtonian Mechanics were the end all to the questions that had plagued thinkers since the beginning of time. The key difference is that Newton was never exposed to the world of science that technology had made prevalent to the likes of an Einstein or Hawking, or even my colleague studying neuro surgery at John s Hopkins University. When Newton was sitting under his apple tree conjuring up ideas for how and why he did not fly off into space or why the harder you hit something the farther it goes, technology was moving along at the rate of most people s grandmothers in their walkers. The scientists that had surrounded Newton knew only of what they could see. Their were no people looking to the far ends of the galaxies and their were no people looking in to the unseen cells that make up everything that we can see. Basically, Newton did not have a reason to explain what he was not aware of. He did have quite good reason, however, to explain why he got a bump on his head from that ripe apple that no longer needed the shelter of the tree. According to Shlain, Newton set the world he knew to mechanics and set the parameters for the new and final, well what was thought to be the final paradigm of the world. Then in 1905, ... Waking up every morning, I still can t believe it s been almost two years since I moved to America. I mean it s crazy, one year ago all the street signs are in Chinese and the next thing you know I wake up in a world of English. I can still remember the day I step off the airplane, it was a day that changed my life. Some of my friends were amazed by how quickly I adapted to America, but that s not true. I had a transition year when I was 13. I have to say; I m feeling very different from two years ago when I first walk into a world where everyone speaks English. What most of my friends don t know is that I didn t go to Jericho straightway; I was in Syosset for 8th grade. I remember walking into the building for the first time. My heart was pounding; I was sweating. I reported to the administrator, and I was taken to the classroom by the social study teacher (kind of a leading teacher of the class). I walked through the classroom door, and I sort of had a panic attack when everybody looked at me. God, I really wish I was dead or something at that moment. I have to say how I landed in that school was a mystery to solve. In the entire school building including staff members, I m probably the only atheist there. • 36. The Rise Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism The rise of Zionism and Arab Nationalism in the nineteenth century triggered major political tensions in the region of Palestine. The conflict among the Zionists and Arab Nationalists is primarily due to the politics of territory and is essentially not comprised of religious opposition. In fact, before the advent of Zionism and Arab Nationalism, Jews and Palestinians shared a local identity due to mutual tolerances. This identity, which took precedence over religion, created a vivacious community with its own unique set of traditions and customs shared among the Jews, Muslims and Christians. However, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Zionists whom were seeking a safe haven from Jewish prejudices in mainly Eastern Europe, proclaimed their return to Palestine. Zionists sought the territory of Palestine as the official land of the Jews because of their ancient homeland ties. Furthermore, as Zionism progressed, Arabs Nationalists were threatened by the ideology and the vast Jewish immigration to Palestine. In the Arab point of view, Zionism emerged as a European movement, which appeared to be another attempt by Western imperialism to subordinate Muslims to Europeans. Although Arab Nationalism and Zionism were similar in nature, these two identities were destined to clash primarily due to their irreconcilable nationalistic aspirations and cultural characteristics. Only 10% of the budget is going to go to space technology because even though there is still a need to continue developing technologies for space, it does not need the same funds as other sections, and without any large space missions in the near future it is not as pressing as other categories like science, exploration, and space operations. The third category is exploration which will receive 27% of the budget. The exploration budget will go to projects like space transportation systems and human missions to the moon and mars. Projects such as these require a large portion of the budget due to their expensive nature, but despite the cost, these missions gain public support. Without such missions, the public would not have supported the United States spending billions of dollars on scientific research. Additionally, these missions help gain an understanding of the universe. The fourth category is Aeronautics which will receive 7% of the budget. Aeronautic projects would include new aircraft and new air traffic control systems. This category is similar to space technology where there still needs to be research in the field but it does not require as much money as other parts of NASA. Also, there are more companies in the private sector of aeronautic that will be researching similar topics. • 38. Comparing The Pentagram And Pentacle Symbols The Pentagram and Pentacle Symbolism, 1, Explain It, Kristin Hitchcock With the rise of interest in Wiccan and Paganism, there has also been a rise in the misunderstanding of certain symbols. Two of these symbols, the pentagram and pentacle, have perhaps more misunderstanding than most. Many modern people consider them both symbols of evil and satanic worship. When they imagine either one of these symbols, they commonly see them being used in blood sacrifices or black magick. However, these symbols are actually connected with none of these concepts. Instead, they have a long history and have been used by cultures for centuries to represent all sorts of things from the five elements to the five wounds of Christ. The Pentagram is defined ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has been used as a sacred symbol since ancient times by many different cultures from Egypt to India. In many ancient cultures, the number five was sacred and had great religious significance. This can be seen most easily in the myths of the ancient Celts, where the number five appeared numerous times. Ireland had five great roads, five provinces, and five paths of law. In another culture, the Greeks specifically, the Pythagoreans considered the pentagram to be a symbol of man, because of the fivefold division of man s body (right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, head). They also taught that it represented to forces that made up the universe air, water, fire, earth, and spirit. This symbolism has persisted for centuries and is still used widely today by modern Pagans. The pentacle, while it can represent some of the pentagram s associations, has various other meanings as well. With the addition of the circle, it becomes a symbol of protection, and is commonly used by modern Pagans in this sense. When added to the pentagram s symbolism of the five elements, however, the circle can also cause the pentacle to represent unity and oneness with the universe. However, a pentacle also refers to a solid, plate like object that is commonly found on many Wiccan altars. In this context, it represents earth and is used to consecrate ritual ... The New York Times recorded a study by Yankelovich, a market research firm, and they estimated that people living in a city see up to 5,000 or more advertisements a day. By the same token, children are heavily exposed to advertising, and most of the ads today are directed right at them. Advertising to children is a big part of the market today. Therefore, advertisers should not market to children because it is unethical. It can influence children s behavior in a negative fashion, and markets can exploit children, and can use the media to reach children at young ages even though they are not able to understand its intent. Many would say that classical music is real music since it is the basis of music that is created today and it has lasted through time. It is still heard today, one of the first types of music to last. Others may strongly disagree; even though it has stood the test of time what actually makes this the sole definition of good music? It doesn t, there really is not a true universal definition. There are multiple views on what is considered real or good and that is what needs to be brought to attention, that there is not a single wrong or right in this field. I view counseling as a ministry that is designed to help individuals acquire the skills necessary to deal with life experiences and foster positive relationships, and establish and complete goals. According to Flanagan Flanagan (2014), establishing a positive rapport is essential before developing assessments and interventions (p.7). Therefore, I will take the necessary steps in building positive rapports with my clients. In order to be able to assist culturally diverse clients counselors should have a strong sense of self awareness.
