Formative And Summative Assessment
The impact of formative assessment on student s learning and achievement in South Africa and The
United States
The purpose of this paper is to examine the tensions between formative and summative assessments
with a review of how they impact student learning and achievement for South African and
American students.
Introduction
Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs
undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development (Palomba Banta, 1999).
Assessment is frequently divided into summative assessment and formative assessment. The
distinction between formative and summative is made mainly in terms of purpose and timing, in
formative assessment the positive achievements of a pupil may be recognised and discussed and
the appropriate next steps may be planned, whereas summative assessment is the recording of the
overall achievement of a pupil in a systematic way (DES/WO, 1988, para. 23).
It has been argued that all assessments can be considered summative, but only some of them are
formative (Tyler, Gagne, Scriven, 1967). Some however favor formative assessments over
summative assessments. There is a critical point to consider when thinking about summative
assessment; can test scores be used to inform us about our teaching and learning? Oftentimes it
does not inform us very well. Students ability and achievement in learning are not measurable by
one single test. Even if they can reveal some problems

At Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly), patent expiration is part of everyday business. However,
Prozac, Lilly s flagship product and market leader in the most popular class of pharmaceuticals

A Report On The Sun
Everyone loves waking up at eight in the morning to go to an auction, particularly a college
student whose classes don t begin until noon, right? Wrong, especially one who has never been to
an auction, let alone woken up at eight in the morning since mid August. That morning, I was
unaware of my ability to learn so much about the microscopic Eastern Shore from a hoarder s
garage on steroids. Surprisingly, it s possible for a place that only holds eight percent of Maryland
s population to be hectic, but also peaceful and eccentric; its inhabitants could be competitive,
friendly, and also rude, all at the same time.
Regardless of where I wanted to be, I was in Crumpton, MD on the last Wednesday of September.
The sun is nowhere to be seen while drizzling rain is stirring the dirt ground into mud, but
regardless of how dark and gloomy the morning felt, the colossal yellowish green building
managed to lighten the mood. Its base is compiled of cement blocks and the roof is slanted, painted
in a forest green to match the large letters that read Dixson s Furniture Auction. In front of the
auction warehouse sat items that belonged to someone at some point, but were in search of a new
owner. Each item was systematically scattered throughout the lot. Most items are what you would
expect to see: wooden chairs, wardrobes, and even some tables.
Suddenly, a short, skinny black man asked if he could be of any assistance. I kindly responded no.
The man quickly vanishes into the

The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Setting Essay
Does a beautiful sunny morning in an average little town sound like a setting fit for a stoning
occurring later that day? The setting of a story is very important to the storyline and gives meaning
to each element and theme of the story. The setting of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson has
extremely significant meaning to the plot of this story. The setting represents elements of irony,
tradition, and unity.
The mood in the beginning of the story is cheerful and appears to be a normal day. The children
are playing, the men are talking about planting and rain, tractors and taxes (Jackson 1). Nothing
seems to be abnormal about this particular day. This is a very unusual description of townspeople s
activities and conversations knowing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boys as we find out in the end are involved in a tragic and awful stoning of a fellow
townsperson with the help of members in the community. The irony comes from the assumption of
innocent play that leads to the killing of an innocent woman.
The lottery takes place at the beginning of the summer. The children have recently started their
summer vacation and people are getting ready for summer activities. Usually during the summer,
time is being spent having fun. People usually are enjoying and celebrating the sun and doing fun
activities when the weather is very nice. The irony in this is that the town is doing the complete
opposite of these common events. The events this town participates in is the stoning of an innocent
person. This is very dark and sad, which is completely opposite of the bright, warm sign that they
should be celebrating and enjoying at this time.
There was one last ironic element displayed. Irony is found in the fact that the women who was
complaining and soon killed in the end was the only women speaking up and making a joke
about the lottery before the drawing occurred. The women named Tessie jokingly states: Get up
there, Bill (4). When her husband s name was called. She acts as if this whole event is all fun
and games, and probably does not think she will pick the paper with the black spot making her
the one to be stoned. After her jokes, her family is selected to pick out of the box again. She picks

Essay On Passover
Passover is one of the most widely observed holidays and one of the most sacred to the Jewish
people. It is a time of songs, family, and celebration. During this time, the Jews commemorate the
bondage of the Israelites to Egypt. This weeklong celebration includes several rituals such as the
meal known as the seder, removal of leavened bread and readings from the Haggadah. Passover
customs between the Yemenites (Eastern Jews) and the European Jews vary in certain ways. One
variation is in their musical interpretations of the Passover seder. Passover begins on the sunset
marking the start of the 15th day of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish calendar. It commemorates
the covenant between God and the Jewish people. Over 3,000 years ago,... Show more content on

They also sing and chant a plethora of poetry and writing from the Haggadah. Though every family
may have their own traditions, there is a larger distinction between the musical interpretations of
the Yemenites and the European Jews (Ashkenazic). The Yemenites, also known as the Sephardic
Jews, have a more folks song way to their seder. A Yemenite seder uses different melodies than the
European. They tend to not be trained singers, were as the Europeans have trained singers who
begin their training as a young child. The Yemenites also may chant the four questions that are
usually for the youngest child together in unison. They just join in whenever the chanting is going
on. The Europeans tend to reserve those questions for the youngest child. Even though the
information in the Haggadahs are nearly identical, the songs towards the end of the seder is where
they differ considerably. At the end of the European Haggadah, there are seven piyutim. The first
five are from the 12th century and the last two were added later in the 15th century from Jewish
folks songs. This piyutim have made their way into the Sephardic traditions over the years and have
become an essential part of Passover. The Sephardi sing their songs in their traditional language

Time Magazine Claims On The Vikings
Ravagers, pagans, ruthless, Time magazine claims on the Vikings. They were more than that.
Without them history wouldn t be the same. They had trade routes from Iraq to the Canadian
Pacific. They were Metalworkers. they were explorers whose restless hearts brought them to North
America some 500 years before Columbus. They were warriors. They were Democrats. Many
people think of them as the men who worshipped Thor and had horned hats. Well one of these is
wrong. Vikings never wore horned hats. They had great Hygiene. They slave traded. Much like

Leadership Development Of Team Captains
This paper is an academic critique of the article by Christian Grandzol, Susan Perlis, and Lois
Draina (2010) entitled, Leadership development of team captains in collegiate athletics. Grandzol,
Perlis, and Draina were attempting to determine if participating in collegiate athletics was
associated with leadershipdevelopment. The authors looked at five leadership practices that were
analyzed through the use of the Student Leadership Practice Inventory developed by James
Kouzes and Barry Posner. The author s research question was Are leadership practices of (A)
model the way, (B) inspire a shared vision, (C) challenge the process, (D) enable others to act, and
(E) Encouraging the heart related to athletic participation and leadership position? (Grandzol,
Perlis, Draina, 2010, p. 405). Although the Grandzol et al were looking at collegiate athletes in
their study, they were trying to answer the age old question; are leaders born or are they developed?
Review of Literature
Leadership has many definitions and has been described by many authors, political leaders, and
common men by different means. The great Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, once said;
Leaders aren t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.
And that s the price we ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal. The literature that the
authors reviewed justifies the argument that leaders are developed. Grandzol et al did not find
much literature that

How Is Invictus Historically Accurate
It always seems impossible until it s done. (Nelson Mandela quotes) I recently watched the
movie Invictus. After watching the movie, reading the book and doing research on true events,
time period and people I will prove that the film, Invictus, was not historically accurate by
discussing the true historical people and events, summarizing the movie, and comparing and
contrasting how the movie portrayed the true people and events. Nelson Mandela was born in
1918 and was named Rolihlahala which means troublemaker. He wasn t given the name Nelson

Mandela gave him a copy of the The Man in the Arena passage from the president of the United

not supposed to happen. Both Mandela and the security guards were shocked at the sight
because it was not approved. Turns out this was just made up. The plane did get permission to

few of the things that were changed for the making of this movie. Although it was a very good
movie, it is not completely historically accurate. I personally really liked this movie. Mainly
because it tells a very interesting story and really catches your attention and keeps it through the
entire film. I do not think that this movie was completely historically accurate. There was many
moments where you would notice that things were not how they were supposed to be. Then when

Amos Bronson Alcott Research Paper
Alcott s writing was highly influenced by her upbringing, much like many authors.
Transcendentalism was her father s principle belief and this in turn affected how he lived his life,
which affected Alcott s childhood and eventually her writing. Every follower defined
transcendentalism in their own way, such as idealism, individualism, a movement, a philosophy, or
even a religion at times. Her father, Amos Bronson Alcott, was a founder of the movement that was
transcendentalism. Bronson Alcott was a follower of Transcendentalism, a philosophical movement
popular in the mid nineteenth century. Transcendentalism proposed that everyone had access to the
divine spirit, but this access was easily corrupted by the trappings of civilization. Bronson believed

Bronson put all his faith in one objective. When that did not pan out for him in the long run, he
became lost and confused. The parents of the students attending this school saw Bronson s
teachings as invalid and made up. Parents pulled their kids out of school, even though many
students enjoyed having Bronson as their teacher. Everyone had their own opinions and most of
which Bronson did not care to hear. In fact, Alcott had a multitude of thoughts on Bronson s
teachings. She wrote a novel transcribing every detail. Transcendental Wild Oats is essentially
Louisa May Alcott s somewhat fictionalized account of the communal experience: its philosophy,
its inhabitants, its daily routine, and its demise. Her description of the commune s seven month
existence in 1843 stands as a sharp repudiation of Abel Lamb, based on her father, and Timon Lion,
based on Charles Lane. The sketch is an attack on phallocentric transcendentalism, rooted in the
abstract and the theoretical: philosophy, idealism, and earth denial. The earth to be transcended by

The City That Become Safe
In this paper I will discuss and explain anatomy of a crime decline in New York City as well as if in
these days can we say that the city is safe. Purpose of this book The City That Become Safe
written by Franklin E. Zimring is to show us how crime rate changed during 1990 to 2009.
According to author this book presents a detailed profile of New York Citycrimeover 20 years
period. Book provides the vital statistics of the crime drop by type of crime, by borough, and by
year. There are two reasons that such exhaustive detail is required as a beginning to the study.
First, the size and the length of the drop are without precedent in the recorded history of
American urban crime. The second reason that the details of the crime decline are needed is as a
road map for explaining what changes in the city and its government might have caused this epic
decline. The more we know about the specific character of the decline when it happened, where it
happened, which offenses the better our capacity for sorting through different theories of what
caused the drop. In addition, shifts the focus from the two decades of the decline to an assessment
of current conditions in the city. How safe is New York City?.
The mission of this book is to provide a statistical profile of the notable crime decline that started
in New York City in the early 1990s and has further well past the of a new century. The first
portion of analysis will focus on three important features of the official

Essay about Women and Men of the Victorian Era
The Victorian era established strict guidelines and definitions for the ladies and gentleman.
Noble birth typically defined one as a lady or a gentleman, but for women in this time period,
socioeconomic rank and titles held no prestige or special privileges in a male dominated society.
Commonly, women in this era generally tried to gain more influence and respect but to no avail
as their male counterparts controlled the ideals and practices of society. Women were subject to
these ideals and practices without any legal or social rights or privileges. In the literary titles by
Frances Power Cobbe, Sarah Stickney Ellis, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte, John Henry Cardinal

The opportunity for women to further their education outside of the home and express themselves
artistically was extremely rare during the Victorian era. The exposure Frances Power Cobbe had
to a life outside of her maternal and spousal obligations would fuel other women to protest the
prejudice men held against all women, and thus Cobbe s narration influenced female ambitions for
equality in all aspects of life. Cobbe s autobiography certainly gave Caroline Norton a precedent for
action and encouragement to voice her disdain for male domination over women.
Caroline Norton s A Letter to the Queen forcibly protested the prejudice women had endured for
centuries in the form of a letter sent to the queen in hopes of rectifying Norton s intellectually
impoverished sisters. Norton s frustration with the English legal system (in its regards to women)
stemmed from her husband s bondage of her. Her husband denied her access to her sons and tried
to wrongfully claim her wages as a writer. From Norton s personal frustrations with her husband
and the overall male dominated legal system, her A Letter to the Queen presented a passionate
argument for the rights of all women with her emphasis on married women. Norton began her letter
by claiming that a married woman in England [had] no legal existence and that her husband had
predefined that the only existence she knows. From this powerful

Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron
POSSIBLE THESIS STATEMENTS
#1 Can we live in Kurt Vonnegut s story of Harrison Bergeron which is a Utopian society where
everyone is equal mentally, socially, and physically? Would we need to interact or come together
with others in society? #2 Harrison Bergeron , a short story written by Kurt VonnegutJr., Vonnegut
makes it well known to his readers how dangerous it can be to have total equality. Throughout the
story, the author uses comedy, sarcasm, and tone. #3 In Kurt Vonnegut Jr. s short story, Harrison
Bergeron , the author argues the dangers of a world that is based on total equality. Not only does
Vonnegut expose the negative results of being alike, he also shows that we desire to be different
from each other.
In the year 2081, all people are created or forced to be equal mentally, socially, and physically.

you must wear masks, and if you are strong and athletic, you are weighed down with heavy
weights. This contradicts everything that we believe in about our society today. This is also what

The Death Of The Frontier And Progressive Era Essay
Ragtime is full with a myriad number of characters, from Harry Houdini to Booker T Washington,
but the pivotal characters in my eyes were Mother and Father. There s something to be said when
the main characters of a novel don t even have names, unlike the many other minor characters, who
were major players in history. What makes them stand out even more is the fact that Mother and
Father weren t the only fictional characters, however, they as long as all of the members of their
family, including Little Girl who would join Mother s family at the end of the tale, were the only
ones who were not named. That s because it s an obvious way for Doctorow to use them as a
symbol for the typical middle class American family during the ProgressiveEra. However, this is
not the only role they had. In addition, the death of the Frontier and the birth of the Progressive
Era is shown in Ragtime through the developing relationship between Father and Mother who
represent the Frontier and Progressive Era respectively. The relationship they share is a unique
one and vital to the image Doctorow is trying to depict, the change occurring in time. There s a
reason Father and Mother, a married couple, were used in this way rather than another relationship,
and that is because an era does not erratically die, but rather the merging of new and old ideas
forms a marriagebetween the two eras before one is completed. Just like two time periods, Father
and Mother change positions. While Father grows

Christianity And Shintoism Similarities
Comparison between Christianity and Shintoism
Introduction
Today, many there are many world religions that are based on many different beliefs. Christianity
is arguably the world s largest religion with an estimated 2.1 billion followers in the world. While
this religion has evolved over the years into something now referred to as modern Christianity, it is
still defined by the traditional values mostly found in the scriptures. Some other ancient religions
like Shintoism have also remained in practice even in modern times. The aim of this paper is to
compare these two religions to define the similarities and differences they have. It will also dissect
how the modern values have eroded the core values of these respective religions.

However, it would be wrong to suggest that the progressive thinking has not interfered with the
basic values of these religions. One thing that this progressiveness has interfered with is folk
religion. Today, people in Japan no longer see it as a basic need that shapes their daily life
experiences. Instead, they argue that such beliefs make Shinto appear as an indigenous primitive
religion. Today, around 80% of Japanese argue that they have no religion. This shows that these
progressive thoughts are interfering with the religious thoughts or even the basic belief in religion
(Littleton 113). Different from the past, many people today do not belong to any religion because

Shooting Stars
Shooting Stars
The poem Shooting Stars by Carol Ann Duffy tells a shocking story of a female prisoner held by
Nazis in a concentration camp around the time of the Holocaust. The poem is set in 1940, Hitler
and his Nazi party had taken control of most of Europe and had vowed to exterminate the entire
Jewish race.
Duffy s haunting use of imagery and word choice make this poem so memorable and its very
strong opening prepares the reader for the rest of the poem.
The title choice, Shooting Stars is a very effective and ambiguous title. The first meaning is that
the word Stars represent the Jewish symbol, The Star of David. Jewish people were forced to wear
them on their clothes to mark them out as targets of abuse and torment for ... Show more content on

The word gaze shows that these men are detached from their emotions as they are part of a mass
slaughtering which seems hard to believe that that is humanly possible.
Duffy then uses the literary technique, enjambment to combine the first and second stanzas. This
technique is used to emphasize the point, Mourn for the daughters / upright as statues and carry the
impact through the two stanzas. Duffy shows how the women are stood firm and even in the most
humiliating, de humanised state.
You would not look at me. / You waited for the bullet the woman is looking out for her friend as
they are waiting to be killed. For the woman to be faced with death and looking out for her friend
shows the incredibly selfless personality of the Jews. The following single word line, Fell is a
euphemism for the death of the woman and gives a strong, short impact to the reader and acts like
a literary bullet which is literally the object which killed her.
Duffy tells us to Remember these appalling days which make the world forever bad . She gives
the word Remember a capital letter to emphasize the fact that we should not forget what happened
there. Duffy believes that if the memory of this atrocity stays in our memory, we can avoid any
other mass, human caused disaster to reoccur.
Enjambment is once again used to link stanzas two and three. One saw I was alive. Loosened / his

The subject of the two works are different even though the models of the figures within both of the

Also remaining on the topic of the figures, Cassatt s figure is more conservatively dressed and

version of the painting featured the right strap of the gown suggestively slipping off the shoulder
and was later repainted by Sargent in hopes to appease the critics and reverse some of the damage
done by the piece. The use of color is also what definitely sets these two works apart and gives
them such opposing vibes. Mary Cassatt s The Cup of Tea handles light and color a lot more
vibrantly. The color palate is light in value and showcases primarily pastel colors and warm
colored skin while Sargent s piece is darker in value with pale ghostly colored skin. In the peer

Negative Long term Effects of Advertising
Advertisements are a way to promote sales of a product or service through visual communication.
Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O Shaughnessy and
Standler describe ideologies as sets of social values, ideas, beliefs, feelings and representations by
which people collectively make sense of the world they live in (2012; 174). Ideologies try to
manipulate people into buying a way of life as well as goods (Dyer, 1982:5). Adverts such as the

Octavia Butler Bloodchild Summary
Octavia Butler, an African American author who uses her writing abilities to instill awareness
through a unique form of science fiction. Each of her novels and stories address issues and topics
that address issues that typically are discussed with a lot of tension from the feminist of the world.
Some of these issues include genderinequalities and gender norms. The short story that I decided
to read and write about is Bloodchild which is based on a romantic and controlling relationship
with humans and outer space creatures. This author switches the roles of the characters to opposite
of societal norms. The male character has the role of the female, so he is required to give birth and
the female character has taken the place of the male and has taken on the impregnating actions. The
male, Gan, who is the main character, is often seen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her science fiction novels are very fantasy based with real meanings behind them. Butler does this
to make the harsh truth, easier to understand and comprehend. She wants to paint the picture of the
wall men have around women in society. In her novel the alien like creature who is the women is a
very string creature with long arms. She often made people feel trapped. whole left row of T
Gatoi s limbs closed around her, holding her loosely, but securely...no one else in the family
liked it. They said it made them feel caged (Butler 3). This feeling that Butler described is the
same some women feel throughout their lives due to not being able to make their own choices
about how to live their lives. Instead society tells them what is needed to be done as a woman
not what is needed for themselves. Many women go through this oppression without even
knowing it. Society had forced women to overlook the way they are treated because the world we
live in is male based driven. Butler wants to change the way we see things, her goal is to change
the perception of what is socially

Steadily walking up the steep mountain path, Dave thought out loud to himself. I think this is
the best hiking path ever, he whispered to nobody. Suddenly, Dave took a step forward and
tripped on a rock. Owww! he yelled. He had a bad bump on his head. As he got up from the dusty
road, he noticed a small cave maybe three feet high and three feet wide. He couldn t believe his
eyes. Wowww! Dave exclaimed. He crawled to the cave, grabbed his flashlight from his pack, and
slid inside the cave. Dave turned on his flashlight and found the cave huge. As he shone his
flashlight around, he saw huge stalactites and stalagmites with pools of water. As he walked in

The Battle On Terror And The War On Drugs
In many ways, the war on terror and the war on drugs have merged. The type of red scare
rhetoric from the McCarthy era became nearly interchangeable with the drug war and terrorism
during the Reagan administration. We re in the middle of a major epidemic...Parents have a
right to feel terror, said Donald Ian MacDonald, Reagan s top drug advisor. He was referring to
drugs. Marlin Fitzwater, Reagan s Press Secretary openly admitted that everybody wants to out
drug each other in terms of political rhetoric. This battle of hyperbole was waged on both sides
of the political aisle. Even liberals like former Rep. Stephen Solarz (D NY) compared the danger
from the cartels to intercontinental ballistic missiles and wondered why we treat (their) threat so
lightly? Likewise, former Rep. Thomas F. Hartnett (R SC) declared that drugs were a national
security threat...worse than any nuclear warfare or any chemical warfare waged on any battlefield.
The two issues officially fused during the Reagan administration when the term narcoterrorism was
coined and an effective propaganda tool was formed. The Reagan administration asserted that drug
money from Latin America would be a source of funds to support insurgencies and subversion. This
eased the way for the Reagan administration to amend the Posse Comitatus Act thereby allowing
military involvement in the drug war. The Posse Comitatus Act was an act of Congress in 1878
which prohibited the government from using the

Self-Discovery in Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and Equus...
Through the incorporation of figurative language in both Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and
Equus by Peter Shaffer, they set the characters in isolation during the experience of hiding emotions

Therefore analyzing the behavior that occurs during the process and the aftermath of their seclusion

Due to his tragic metamorphosis, he then realizes his need for shut[ing] himself all together in
order for his family s relief (Kafka 29). Also, when alienating self, it encourages Gregor s belief that
he trifles his family. Since he causes grief among them, it pushes his isolation and relationship
blockage further with his family. Thus, his silence and insecurity causes him to gradually think of
his self happiness rather than their judgment. Likewise, Shaffer also characterizes Alan as isolating
towards society and his family. Most importantly, Alan has a way of avoiding questions by either
ignoring them or contain an ulterior motive of changing the subject. Therefore when ask:

of emotions and truth. Hence, Alan attempt in subduing society s involvement with his life and
hiding his inner thoughts. Also through his actions, others view him as diverse from society. Since
Alan defends his emotions and isolates himself, when someone observes him, they see him as a
modern citizen for whom society doesn t exist (Shaffer 2.25). Through society s surveillance of
Alan, it proves his alienation and abnormality among others. Due to that, Alan continues to hide
emotions, which causes pain to self. However, once he stops hiding the truth, he will then realize

Modern globalization encompasses many of the world s essential attributes: from the modern

Though all schools of thought have a common goal to increase and develop the economy, their
views differentiate on who it should benefit. Economic neoliberalism focuses on economic freedom
to benefit the individual and limit the amount of power that states can hold. They support market
based systems because of the limited government regulation. Market based systems are created to
meet the need of the people and consumers, rather than producing solely for the purpose of
increased government power and control.
The global shift towards market based economic systems has undoubtedly promoted globalization.
The change towards market based systems has four primary components. This includes the transfer
of state owned enterprises, division of previous state owned monopolies, deregulation of markets,
and the creation of a lawful system that supports private enterprise, as well as protects property.
Furthermore, market economies are more likely to participate foreign investments and take part in
worldwide trade, rather than the socialist alternative.

Medical Field Application Essay
I have been interested in the medical field for as long as I can remember. I recall being around
the age of four or five and my mom asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I answered
without hesitation that I wanted to be a doctor. I know at that age I did not know much more
about being a doctor other than simply they took care of sick people. As I got older, I chose to
be a doctor for babies and children, which at first was for the simple fact that I loved babies and
children. I was always researching and reading up on medical books and journals. I wanted to know
everything about the healthcare field from the history of medicineto the most current medical
findings. I was always curious about various illnesses and diseases, what caused them, and the
symptoms and treatment. When I was in my late teens, I interviewed a local pediatrician for a

Frankenstein And Individualism
Romanticism is the active search for expression and understanding, whether scientifically or
creatively and the composers of texts are significant in providing insight and understanding of the
various perceptions of these individuals. There are countless concepts and ideologies that contribute
to the way of thinking that is Romanticism. However, two themes consistent in and central to texts
that express Romantic concerns is that of the transcendent world; a world most commonly
manifested in the realm of the imagination and within the expression and search for the divinity that
links one human being to another and creates individualism between persons.

This law defying creation, being the first and only of its kind, is an individual. Schlegel s
discussion of German Romanticism in Philosophy argues the belief that philosophy is the inner
mental life and highlights the importance of individualism for the human condition. An
individual is a being who is different from the rest, and who defies the laws of an average being
in some way. Because the Creature is cast out by society, he is forced to live in the forest, to

Comparing Empathy in Blade Runner and Slaughterhouse-Five...
Empathy in Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep)and Slaughterhouse Five
What does it mean to be human? This is a question that is often asked in literary works. Is it our
intelligence that separates us from being like any other animal on this planet or is it something
else? Perhaps it is our ability to feel empathy for other humans and other forms of life. If this is so,
then how is it that we also have violence and wars where humans hurt and kill other humans? How
is it that humans can hurt animals without a second thought, if it s our ability to feel empathy that
separates us from them? Both Philip K. Dick and Kurt Vonnegut explore these questions in their

Everyone is a follower of Mercerism, which encourages people to feel empathy for others and for
animals. In this manner, everyone on Earth survives without feeling that he or she is alone. The
main character of Blade Runner is Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter for the Los Angeles police
department. Several androids had killed their owners on Mars and had escaped to Earth. The first
bounty hunter that went after them managed to retire two before being put in the hospital himself.
It was up to Deckard to destroy the remaining six. Unfortunately, the androids who escaped were
the new Nexus 6 types, which looked and acted exactly like real humans. They were even more
intelligent than most humans. The only way to tell them apart from real humans is by measuring
the amount of empathy they can feel, which isn t as great as humans. While hunting these rouge
androids, Deckard s whole perception of what it is to be human gets questioned and he begins to
wonder if there is that much difference between a human and an android.
Slaughterhouse Five, is based on the author s real life experiences in World War II. In fact, chapter
one of the book is all about how Vonnegut is going about writing this novel. The main character of
this book, though, is a civilian named Billy Pilgrim, who through unfortunate circumstances ends
up on the enemy side of the line during the war. He

The Physics Of The Cloud
The life (and, sometimes, death) cycle of a star begins when gravity triumphs over heat. This
results in a cloud, composed of gasses and minerals, losing balance, and beginning to contract.
Balance for the cloud is not restored, until several radical changes have been experienced by the
cloud, and have, subsequently, altered the cloud.
Stars start their early stages in the form of the above aforementioned, as what is known as an
interstellar cloud. Following the creation of this cloud, the star then passes through seven basic
evolutionary stages. Characteristics of these seven stages are various centralised temperatures
including those on the surface densities, and sizes, of the pre star object. The process begins with a
cold, dark, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, if a star is born, these clouds can become unstable, and can even collapse under their
own gravity resulting in them breaking up into much smaller pieces of their original forms.
Evidence suggests that this process is triggered as the result of an external event a shock wave of
nearby stellar explosions [supernova] or, perhaps, the pressure wave ripple of another cloud as it
forms a star and ionises its own surroundings. An additional theory suggests that a magnetic field is
responsible for the cloud retaining its form and then fading away as its charged particles drift off
into space, thus the leftover gasses are unable to support the cloud s remaining weight.
Over a few million years, the collapsing process is thought to produce several smaller clouds
which have broken off from the parent cloud after it has become unstable and which, in turn, copy
the parent by collapsing, breaking apart, and so on. All of these theories, however different, result
in the same conclusion: the formation of several different types of stars, which a single interstellar
cloud can then produce.
Stage 2 of a star s formation is the Cloud Fragment stage. This stage occurs in one of the
aforementioned fragments of cloud which have broken off from the parent cloud. Cloud fragments
which might then become stars will contain between one and two Sols of material [Sols are a unit
of measurement] and will appear as

of Americans, how they view the poor, and how to stay safe while living the life of a scavenger.
As he travels the streets with his companion Lizbeth he scavenges through dumpsters in search
of the necessities of life. There are many people that are homeless in need of food. The poor do
not have the money to get food. In some cases the higher class poor are is one of the supporters of

that concept as he travels into dumpsters every day in search of necessities. In one of his

When a call is not confirmed by a customer the pizza is thrown away into the dumpster. After a

he visits the pizzas have jalapeГ±os on them. It was intentionally done because he was taking

The tangent of the maximum point on an isenthalpic curve is a horizontal line, indicating that no

Methods and Materials The Joule Thomson apparatus (Leybold Didactic, Huerth, Germany)
consisted of a glass cylinder with five outlets and a glass filter subdivision. One side of the division
was connected to the helium or carbon dioxide gas pressure cylinder that was supplied in the
laboratory, a pressure sensor, and a NiCr Ni thermocouple, which measures the temperature inside
that chamber. The other chamber contained outlets for another thermocouple and for the transferred

Surgical GI Incident Analysis
While working on a surgical GI unit, I was informed by my nurse that my patient was discharged
and that I was going to be assigned to a new patient. My patient had an anastomotic leak from his
previous surgery and there was a possible chance of sepsis. He had two Jpratt drains, an
ileostomy, an NG tube and lastly some wound dressings. One of the aspects that was different from
this patient and other patients, is that he had a patient controlled analgesia pump (PCA). A PCA is
an interactive method of pain management that permits patients to manage their pain by self
administering doses of analgesics, usually opioids (San Diego Patient Safety Task Force, 2008).
My patient had the PCA pump because of his increased pain due to the complication

College Sports Is Not A Career Or Profession
An article written by Horace Mitchell called, Students Are Not Professional Athletes , caught my
attention the moment I read the title. In the article, Mitchell said Collegiate sports is not a career or
profession. It is the students vehicle to a higher education degree. Meaning that you only play
collegesport for four year, if that. You are at college to get an education and to get a job after and
start your life. There are only a select number of collegiate athletes that will go to the
professionals. If you are not one of those select few, but still receiving a scholarship, you are
there to play sport because it pays your tuition. Mitchell then says that most division one athlete
do not have time for a job, but maybe raising the financial aid would help out. I think this would
be a good idea, but if they increasing the financial aid, they should make it available to all
divisions. But, if it is increased, what happens if the NCAA runs out of money to pay for all the
athletes to go to college for free? Where would the money come from then. No matter the situation
involving the NCAA it would take years and years of figuring out to even be considered. Kristi
Dosh wrote an article titled The Problems With Paying College Athletes . Her main argument
against athletes getting paid is, where will all the money come from? She says that there are only
fourteen schools that are making profit without have to rely on institutional support. Those schools
include, Notre Dame,

Importance of Early American Women Writers Essay
What could be said to early American women s writers except, thank you? The first American
women s writers opened doors and laid the foundation for future women s writers and readers.
Today s women raise children, supervise households, and work outside the home with every
modern convenience available, and as you would expect do not find the time to write, except for a
grocery list. Early American womenraised children and supervised households without the modern
conveniences of today and in some way made time to write the first poetry of the New World. For
example, Everette Emerson gives a picture of Anne Bradstreet a housewife who stole hours from
sleep for writinggave women American writerstheir start (4). Different styles of... Show more

Bradstreet poetry was considered plain style. She offered the reader a look into the private world,
her world. Upon Burning in Our House was a simple style poem about the truth put into simple
words, as were all of Bradstreet s poems. Bradstreet tells about faith in God and belongings lost in
the poem. Bradstreet addressed her husband, children, God, and community in her poems. Her
maternal instinct and dedication were present in her writing. In the poem, The Author to Her Book,
Bradstreet compares the poem itself to a child, her child:
Thou ill formed offspring of my feeble brain,
Who after birth did st by my side remain,
Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true,
Who thee abroad, exposed to public view,
Made thee in rags, halting to th press to trudge,
These errors were not lessened (all may judge).
At thy return my blushing was not small,
my rambling brat in (in print) should mother call,
I cast thee by as one unfit for light,
My visage was so irksome in my sight;
Yet being mine own, at length affection would
thy blemishes amend, if so I could:
I washed thy face, but defects I saw,
And rubbing off a spot, still made a flaw...(Meridian 33.1 14)
Bradstreet wanted her poetry to remain private. She accepted her poetry unconditionally, like a
mother accepts her child, because if she tried to correct the poem s flaws more flaws appeared. A
distinct expression of Bradstreet true love to her

Enron Corporation Essay
Enron Corporation
Before filing for bankruptcy in 2001, Enron Corporation was one of the largest integrated natural
gas and electricity companies in the world. It marketed natural gas liquids worldwide and operated
one of the largest natural gas transmission systems in the world, totaling more than 36,000 miles. It
was also one of the largest independent developers and producers of electricity in the world, serving
both industrial and emerging markets.
Timeline
Enron began as Northern Natural Gas Company, organized in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1930. The
company s founding came just a few months after the stock market crash of 1929, an unusual time
to launch a new venture. Several aspects of the Great Depression actually worked in ... Show more

1985: InterNorth merges with Houston Natural Gas Corp. to form HNG/InterNorth. The new
enterprise begins to divest some of its business that did not fit in with its long term goals, including
the Peoples division, which sells for $250 million. Peru s government nationalizes the company s
assets there, and HNG/InterNorth begins negotiating for payment, taking a $218 million charge
against earnings in the meantime.
1986: Changes its name to Enron Corp. Sells its chemical subsidiary and its 50% stake in Citrus
Corp.
Enron built power plants in industrial and developing nations all over the world: Italy, Turkey,
Argentina, China, India, Brazil, Guatemala, Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the
Philippines, and others. By 1996, earnings from these projects accounted for 25 percent of total
company earnings before interest and taxes
1998: Enron puts its Enron Oil Gas Co. up for sale, but refuses an offer, reportedly from
Occidental Petroluem Corp., for 53.5% of the unit. The company secures roughly $800 million
worth of new customers each quarter. By the year s end, it is the largest electricity wholesale
operation in the U.S.

The Black Death And The Bubonic Plague
The Black Death or the bubonic plague was one of the most devastating pandemics in human
history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe
in the years 1346 53. The black death first appeared in Europe in 1347 in Sicily, the disease was
most likely brought to Europe on a ship that had been trading on the black sea. The black plague
was carried by flea infested rodents and spread rapidly. Almost half of Europe was killed by the
bubonic plague.
So much death could not help but tear economic and social structures apart. With a significantly
smaller class of peasants workers and skilled laborers, wages kept stagnant by law and custom
for generations, soared. The value of agricultural land, formerly fertile but now fallow,
plummeted. This is probably the first time in history the scales tipped against wealthy landlords as
peasants gained more bargaining power. Many trained architects, masons, and artisans were from
because of the plague, there was too much work and not enough workers. This caused work wages
to double and social status balanced out and became less rigid.
Commerce stopped. Foreign ships usually welcomed were now viewed as importing death and
barred from docking. Even trips to the local market became rare. At the beginning, inns and taverns
from those who fled and those who frolicked did well, until their owners and workers too
succumbed to the disease and became yet more abandoned buildings.

Moses vs Abraham
In the Old Testament, Abraham and Moses were two very prominent leaders chosen by God to do
his will. Throughout Genesis and Exodus, both men play important roles in fulfilling God s will.
They are put to many tests, given covenants, and communicate constantly with God. Although they
have many similarities such as being leaders and men of God, there are also many differences
between the two.
In terms of leadership, Abraham was a noble leader. Although he grew up in a camp where the
notion of one God was not accepted, he eventually manages to become the leader of a tribe and
make the people believe in his faith. He leads them around endlessly from Ur to Canaan, to Egypt,
then back to Canaan. His tribe followed him around without much ... Show more content on

And although they received similar covenants, they received it in a different way. When
Abraham received his, he got it through prayer. This seems to be dominant during Abraham s
days as a leader. He communicated with God mostly thought prayer. When he asked God for
advise on what to do about Hagar and her son, he does it though prayer. When he asked God about
the wicked city of Sodom, he did it in prayer. And finally

  • 2. Formative And Summative Assessment The impact of formative assessment on student s learning and achievement in South Africa and The United States The purpose of this paper is to examine the tensions between formative and summative assessments with a review of how they impact student learning and achievement for South African and American students. Introduction Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development (Palomba Banta, 1999). Assessment is frequently divided into summative assessment and formative assessment. The distinction between formative and summative is made mainly in terms of purpose and timing, in formative assessment the positive achievements of a pupil may be recognised and discussed and the appropriate next steps may be planned, whereas summative assessment is the recording of the overall achievement of a pupil in a systematic way (DES/WO, 1988, para. 23). It has been argued that all assessments can be considered summative, but only some of them are formative (Tyler, Gagne, Scriven, 1967). Some however favor formative assessments over summative assessments. There is a critical point to consider when thinking about summative assessment; can test scores be used to inform us about our teaching and learning? Oftentimes it does not inform us very well. Students ability and achievement in learning are not measurable by one single test. Even if they can reveal some problems ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. A Report On The Sun Everyone loves waking up at eight in the morning to go to an auction, particularly a college student whose classes don t begin until noon, right? Wrong, especially one who has never been to an auction, let alone woken up at eight in the morning since mid August. That morning, I was unaware of my ability to learn so much about the microscopic Eastern Shore from a hoarder s garage on steroids. Surprisingly, it s possible for a place that only holds eight percent of Maryland s population to be hectic, but also peaceful and eccentric; its inhabitants could be competitive, friendly, and also rude, all at the same time. Regardless of where I wanted to be, I was in Crumpton, MD on the last Wednesday of September. The sun is nowhere to be seen while drizzling rain is stirring the dirt ground into mud, but regardless of how dark and gloomy the morning felt, the colossal yellowish green building managed to lighten the mood. Its base is compiled of cement blocks and the roof is slanted, painted in a forest green to match the large letters that read Dixson s Furniture Auction. In front of the auction warehouse sat items that belonged to someone at some point, but were in search of a new owner. Each item was systematically scattered throughout the lot. Most items are what you would expect to see: wooden chairs, wardrobes, and even some tables. Suddenly, a short, skinny black man asked if he could be of any assistance. I kindly responded no. The man quickly vanishes into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Setting Essay Does a beautiful sunny morning in an average little town sound like a setting fit for a stoning occurring later that day? The setting of a story is very important to the storyline and gives meaning to each element and theme of the story. The setting of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson has extremely significant meaning to the plot of this story. The setting represents elements of irony, tradition, and unity. The mood in the beginning of the story is cheerful and appears to be a normal day. The children are playing, the men are talking about planting and rain, tractors and taxes (Jackson 1). Nothing seems to be abnormal about this particular day. This is a very unusual description of townspeople s activities and conversations knowing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys as we find out in the end are involved in a tragic and awful stoning of a fellow townsperson with the help of members in the community. The irony comes from the assumption of innocent play that leads to the killing of an innocent woman. The lottery takes place at the beginning of the summer. The children have recently started their summer vacation and people are getting ready for summer activities. Usually during the summer, time is being spent having fun. People usually are enjoying and celebrating the sun and doing fun activities when the weather is very nice. The irony in this is that the town is doing the complete opposite of these common events. The events this town participates in is the stoning of an innocent person. This is very dark and sad, which is completely opposite of the bright, warm sign that they should be celebrating and enjoying at this time. There was one last ironic element displayed. Irony is found in the fact that the women who was complaining and soon killed in the end was the only women speaking up and making a joke about the lottery before the drawing occurred. The women named Tessie jokingly states: Get up there, Bill (4). When her husband s name was called. She acts as if this whole event is all fun and games, and probably does not think she will pick the paper with the black spot making her the one to be stoned. • 6. Essay On Passover Passover is one of the most widely observed holidays and one of the most sacred to the Jewish people. It is a time of songs, family, and celebration. During this time, the Jews commemorate the bondage of the Israelites to Egypt. This weeklong celebration includes several rituals such as the meal known as the seder, removal of leavened bread and readings from the Haggadah. Passover customs between the Yemenites (Eastern Jews) and the European Jews vary in certain ways. One variation is in their musical interpretations of the Passover seder. Passover begins on the sunset marking the start of the 15th day of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the covenant between God and the Jewish people. Though every family may have their own traditions, there is a larger distinction between the musical interpretations of the Yemenites and the European Jews (Ashkenazic). The Yemenites, also known as the Sephardic Jews, have a more folks song way to their seder. A Yemenite seder uses different melodies than the European. They tend to not be trained singers, were as the Europeans have trained singers who begin their training as a young child. The Yemenites also may chant the four questions that are usually for the youngest child together in unison. They just join in whenever the chanting is going on. The Europeans tend to reserve those questions for the youngest child. Even though the information in the Haggadahs are nearly identical, the songs towards the end of the seder is where they differ considerably. At the end of the European Haggadah, there are seven piyutim. The first five are from the 12th century and the last two were added later in the 15th century from Jewish folks songs. • 8. Leadership Development Of Team Captains This paper is an academic critique of the article by Christian Grandzol, Susan Perlis, and Lois Draina (2010) entitled, Leadership development of team captains in collegiate athletics. Grandzol, Perlis, and Draina were attempting to determine if participating in collegiate athletics was associated with leadershipdevelopment. The authors looked at five leadership practices that were analyzed through the use of the Student Leadership Practice Inventory developed by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The author s research question was Are leadership practices of (A) model the way, (B) inspire a shared vision, (C) challenge the process, (D) enable others to act, and (E) Encouraging the heart related to athletic participation and leadership position? (Grandzol, Perlis, Draina, 2010, p. 405). Although the Grandzol et al were looking at collegiate athletes in their study, they were trying to answer the age old question; are leaders born or are they developed? Review of Literature Leadership has many definitions and has been described by many authors, political leaders, and common men by different means. The great Green Bay Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, once said; Leaders aren t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. • 10. Amos Bronson Alcott Research Paper Alcott s writing was highly influenced by her upbringing, much like many authors. Transcendentalism was her father s principle belief and this in turn affected how he lived his life, which affected Alcott s childhood and eventually her writing. Every follower defined transcendentalism in their own way, such as idealism, individualism, a movement, a philosophy, or even a religion at times. Her father, Amos Bronson Alcott, was a founder of the movement that was transcendentalism. Bronson Alcott was a follower of Transcendentalism, a philosophical movement popular in the mid nineteenth century. When that did not pan out for him in the long run, he became lost and confused. The parents of the students attending this school saw Bronson s teachings as invalid and made up. Parents pulled their kids out of school, even though many students enjoyed having Bronson as their teacher. Everyone had their own opinions and most of which Bronson did not care to hear. In fact, Alcott had a multitude of thoughts on Bronson s teachings. She wrote a novel transcribing every detail. Transcendental Wild Oats is essentially Louisa May Alcott s somewhat fictionalized account of the communal experience: its philosophy, its inhabitants, its daily routine, and its demise. Her description of the commune s seven month existence in 1843 stands as a sharp repudiation of Abel Lamb, based on her father, and Timon Lion, based on Charles Lane. The sketch is an attack on phallocentric transcendentalism, rooted in the abstract and the theoretical: philosophy, idealism, and earth denial. The earth to be transcended by her father ... Purpose of this book The City That Become Safe written by Franklin E. Zimring is to show us how crime rate changed during 1990 to 2009. According to author this book presents a detailed profile of New York Citycrimeover 20 years period. Book provides the vital statistics of the crime drop by type of crime, by borough, and by year. There are two reasons that such exhaustive detail is required as a beginning to the study. First, the size and the length of the drop are without precedent in the recorded history of American urban crime. The second reason that the details of the crime decline are needed is as a road map for explaining what changes in the city and its government might have caused this epic decline. The more we know about the specific character of the decline when it happened, where it happened, which offenses the better our capacity for sorting through different theories of what caused the drop. In addition, shifts the focus from the two decades of the decline to an assessment of current conditions in the city. How safe is New York City?. The mission of this book is to provide a statistical profile of the notable crime decline that started in New York City in the early 1990s and has further well past the of a new century. • 12. Essay about Women and Men of the Victorian Era The Victorian era established strict guidelines and definitions for the ladies and gentleman. Noble birth typically defined one as a lady or a gentleman, but for women in this time period, socioeconomic rank and titles held no prestige or special privileges in a male dominated society. Commonly, women in this era generally tried to gain more influence and respect but to no avail as their male counterparts controlled the ideals and practices of society. Women were subject to these ideals and practices without any legal or social rights or privileges. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The opportunity for women to further their education outside of the home and express themselves artistically was extremely rare during the Victorian era. The exposure Frances Power Cobbe had to a life outside of her maternal and spousal obligations would fuel other women to protest the prejudice men held against all women, and thus Cobbe s narration influenced female ambitions for equality in all aspects of life. Cobbe s autobiography certainly gave Caroline Norton a precedent for action and encouragement to voice her disdain for male domination over women. Caroline Norton s A Letter to the Queen forcibly protested the prejudice women had endured for centuries in the form of a letter sent to the queen in hopes of rectifying Norton s intellectually impoverished sisters. Norton s frustration with the English legal system (in its regards to women) stemmed from her husband s bondage of her. Her husband denied her access to her sons and tried to wrongfully claim her wages as a writer. From Norton s personal frustrations with her husband and the overall male dominated legal system, her A Letter to the Queen presented a passionate argument for the rights of all women with her emphasis on married women. Norton began her letter by claiming that a married woman in England [had] no legal existence and that her husband had predefined that the only existence she knows. From this powerful ... Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron POSSIBLE THESIS STATEMENTS #1 Can we live in Kurt Vonnegut s story of Harrison Bergeron which is a Utopian society where everyone is equal mentally, socially, and physically? Would we need to interact or come together with others in society? #2 Harrison Bergeron , a short story written by Kurt VonnegutJr., Vonnegut makes it well known to his readers how dangerous it can be to have total equality. Throughout the story, the author uses comedy, sarcasm, and tone. #3 In Kurt Vonnegut Jr. s short story, Harrison Bergeron , the author argues the dangers of a world that is based on total equality. Not only does Vonnegut expose the negative results of being alike, he also shows that we desire to be different from each other. In the year 2081, all people are created or forced to be equal mentally, socially, and physically. You are NOT allowed to be different, whether it is better or worse, than anyone else. If you are good looking, you must wear masks, and if you are strong and athletic, you are weighed down with heavy weights. This contradicts everything that we believe in about our society today. • 14. The Death Of The Frontier And Progressive Era Essay Ragtime is full with a myriad number of characters, from Harry Houdini to Booker T Washington, but the pivotal characters in my eyes were Mother and Father. There s something to be said when the main characters of a novel don t even have names, unlike the many other minor characters, who were major players in history. What makes them stand out even more is the fact that Mother and Father weren t the only fictional characters, however, they as long as all of the members of their family, including Little Girl who would join Mother s family at the end of the tale, were the only ones who were not named. That s because it s an obvious way for Doctorow to use them as a symbol for the typical middle class American family during the ProgressiveEra. However, this is not the only role they had. In addition, the death of the Frontier and the birth of the Progressive Era is shown in Ragtime through the developing relationship between Father and Mother who represent the Frontier and Progressive Era respectively. The relationship they share is a unique one and vital to the image Doctorow is trying to depict, the change occurring in time. There s a reason Father and Mother, a married couple, were used in this way rather than another relationship, and that is because an era does not erratically die, but rather the merging of new and old ideas forms a marriagebetween the two eras before one is completed. Just like two time periods, Father and Mother change positions. While Father grows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The poem is set in 1940, Hitler and his Nazi party had taken control of most of Europe and had vowed to exterminate the entire Jewish race. Duffy s haunting use of imagery and word choice make this poem so memorable and its very strong opening prepares the reader for the rest of the poem. The word gaze shows that these men are detached from their emotions as they are part of a mass slaughtering which seems hard to believe that that is humanly possible. This technique is used to emphasize the point, Mourn for the daughters / upright as statues and carry the impact through the two stanzas. Duffy shows how the women are stood firm and even in the most humiliating, de humanised state. You would not look at me. / You waited for the bullet the woman is looking out for her friend as they are waiting to be killed. For the woman to be faced with death and looking out for her friend shows the incredibly selfless personality of the Jews. The following single word line, Fell is a euphemism for the death of the woman and gives a strong, short impact to the reader and acts like a literary bullet which is literally the object which killed her. Duffy tells us to Remember these appalling days which make the world forever bad . She gives the word Remember a capital letter to emphasize the fact that we should not forget what happened there. In fact the original version of the painting featured the right strap of the gown suggestively slipping off the shoulder and was later repainted by Sargent in hopes to appease the critics and reverse some of the damage done by the piece. The use of color is also what definitely sets these two works apart and gives them such opposing vibes. Mary Cassatt s The Cup of Tea handles light and color a lot more vibrantly. The color palate is light in value and showcases primarily pastel colors and warm colored skin while Sargent s piece is darker in value with pale ghostly colored skin. Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O Shaughnessy and Standler describe ideologies as sets of social values, ideas, beliefs, feelings and representations by which people collectively make sense of the world they live in (2012; 174). This results in a cloud, composed of gasses and minerals, losing balance, and beginning to contract. Balance for the cloud is not restored, until several radical changes have been experienced by the cloud, and have, subsequently, altered the cloud. Stars start their early stages in the form of the above aforementioned, as what is known as an interstellar cloud. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, if a star is born, these clouds can become unstable, and can even collapse under their own gravity resulting in them breaking up into much smaller pieces of their original forms. Evidence suggests that this process is triggered as the result of an external event a shock wave of nearby stellar explosions [supernova] or, perhaps, the pressure wave ripple of another cloud as it forms a star and ionises its own surroundings. An additional theory suggests that a magnetic field is responsible for the cloud retaining its form and then fading away as its charged particles drift off into space, thus the leftover gasses are unable to support the cloud s remaining weight. Over a few million years, the collapsing process is thought to produce several smaller clouds which have broken off from the parent cloud after it has become unstable and which, in turn, copy the parent by collapsing, breaking apart, and so on. All of these theories, however different, result in the same conclusion: the formation of several different types of stars, which a single interstellar cloud can then produce. Stage 2 of a star s formation is the Cloud Fragment stage. This stage occurs in one of the aforementioned fragments of cloud which have broken off from the parent cloud. • 39. Emerson s First Paragraph Poem Diction In the beginning of Emerson s first paragraph poem, he uses strong diction. Use of such words in this manner assists in his main purpose of expounding the idea how one must rely on only themselves and never no one else, how it s a wrong decision. He uses such words or phrases such as imitation is suicide, no hope and envy is ignorance. Use of such words definitely makes an impression on the reader which is the whole purpose, but it influences the reader to how they are going to live their life, cause how would feel after reading that depending on others is just going to kill you, obviously they will decide to make changes in their life and that s the whole point of his writing, that s what he wants to achieve. Which is how it sets the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What I thought was my favorite foods put together making a disgusting combo turned out to be one of my favorite foods. I thought that bread and pickles should not have gone together but someone on this earth thought they did so the squished them together and called them fried pickles. It all started after church when our stomachs were grumbling to be fed. My parents had suggested to eat at Slim Chickens with the rest of my familybecause we always eat with them. When we got there I step up to the line a hope there is something good on the menu that in my world would be called edible . • 41. Essay on Thermodynamic Investigation of the Joule-Thompson... Thermodynamic Investigation of the Joule Thompson Effect and Coefficient Determination for Helium and Carbon Dioxide Niki Spadaro, Megan Cheney, and Jake Lambeth University of North Florida, CHM4410C Fall 2010 The Joule Thomson coefficient explains the behavior of any real gas when changes in intensive properties, such as temperature and pressure, occur. The coefficients for helium and carbon dioxide were determined using a Joule Thomson apparatus that created constant enthalpy within the system. Using literature values for the coefficients at room temperature, the experimental results allow examination of each gas s unique nature. Introduction Enthalpy is a critical study in thermodynamics. It is a measurement of a system s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A pressure versus temperature graph allows comparisons between the two, in which isenthalpic curves are present. Figure 1 illustrates the comparison. Figure 1. Isenthalpic curves on a temperature versus pressure diagram (Image provided by http:/ /www.chem.queensu.ca/courses/09/chem221/ ) [pic] The tangent of the maximum point on an isenthalpic curve is a horizontal line, indicating that no temperature change occurs and ВµJ T= 0. This constant temperature is known as the inversion temperature. It is apparent that this point coincides with the boundary of the shaded area in Figure 1. For a certain pressure, temperatures below the inversion temperature, or within the shaded region, signify cooling. The coefficient is a positive value due to a positive tangent line at any point along the isenthalpic curve. At higher temperatures, a negative coefficient exists due to a negative slope. (Gould Tobochnik, pp.34). Methods and Materials The Joule Thomson apparatus (Leybold Didactic, Huerth, Germany) consisted of a glass cylinder with five outlets and a glass filter subdivision. One side of the division was connected to the helium or carbon dioxide gas pressure cylinder that was supplied in the laboratory, a pressure sensor, and a NiCr Ni thermocouple, which measures the temperature inside that chamber. The other chamber contained outlets for another thermocouple and for the transferred gas. A temperature controlled water bath was used to set the system to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Surgical GI Incident Analysis While working on a surgical GI unit, I was informed by my nurse that my patient was discharged and that I was going to be assigned to a new patient. My patient had an anastomotic leak from his previous surgery and there was a possible chance of sepsis. He had two Jpratt drains, an ileostomy, an NG tube and lastly some wound dressings. One of the aspects that was different from this patient and other patients, is that he had a patient controlled analgesia pump (PCA). A PCA is an interactive method of pain management that permits patients to manage their pain by self administering doses of analgesics, usually opioids (San Diego Patient Safety Task Force, 2008). My patient had the PCA pump because of his increased pain due to the complication ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. College Sports Is Not A Career Or Profession An article written by Horace Mitchell called, Students Are Not Professional Athletes , caught my attention the moment I read the title. In the article, Mitchell said Collegiate sports is not a career or profession. It is the students vehicle to a higher education degree. Meaning that you only play collegesport for four year, if that. You are at college to get an education and to get a job after and start your life. There are only a select number of collegiate athletes that will go to the professionals. If you are not one of those select few, but still receiving a scholarship, you are there to play sport because it pays your tuition. Mitchell then says that most division one athlete do not have time for a job, but maybe raising the financial aid would help out. I think this would be a good idea, but if they increasing the financial aid, they should make it available to all divisions. But, if it is increased, what happens if the NCAA runs out of money to pay for all the athletes to go to college for free? Where would the money come from then. No matter the situation involving the NCAA it would take years and years of figuring out to even be considered. Kristi Dosh wrote an article titled The Problems With Paying College Athletes . Her main argument against athletes getting paid is, where will all the money come from? She says that there are only fourteen schools that are making profit without have to rely on institutional support. Those schools include, Notre Dame, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Importance of Early American Women Writers Essay What could be said to early American women s writers except, thank you? The first American women s writers opened doors and laid the foundation for future women s writers and readers. Today s women raise children, supervise households, and work outside the home with every modern convenience available, and as you would expect do not find the time to write, except for a grocery list. Bradstreet addressed her husband, children, God, and community in her poems. Her maternal instinct and dedication were present in her writing. In the poem, The Author to Her Book, Bradstreet compares the poem itself to a child, her child: Thou ill formed offspring of my feeble brain, Who after birth did st by my side remain, Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true, Who thee abroad, exposed to public view, Made thee in rags, halting to th press to trudge, These errors were not lessened (all may judge). • 47. The Black Death And The Bubonic Plague The Black Death or the bubonic plague was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346 53. The black death first appeared in Europe in 1347 in Sicily, the disease was most likely brought to Europe on a ship that had been trading on the black sea. The black plague was carried by flea infested rodents and spread rapidly. Almost half of Europe was killed by the bubonic plague. So much death could not help but tear economic and social structures apart. With a significantly smaller class of peasants workers and skilled laborers, wages kept stagnant by law and custom for generations, soared. The value of agricultural land, formerly fertile but now fallow, plummeted. This is probably the first time in history the scales tipped against wealthy landlords as peasants gained more bargaining power. Many trained architects, masons, and artisans were from because of the plague, there was too much work and not enough workers. This caused work wages to double and social status balanced out and became less rigid. Commerce stopped. Foreign ships usually welcomed were now viewed as importing death and barred from docking. Even trips to the local market became rare. At the beginning, inns and taverns from those who fled and those who frolicked did well, until their owners and workers too succumbed to the disease and became yet more abandoned buildings. • 49. Moses vs Abraham In the Old Testament, Abraham and Moses were two very prominent leaders chosen by God to do his will. Throughout Genesis and Exodus, both men play important roles in fulfilling God s will. They are put to many tests, given covenants, and communicate constantly with God. Although they have many similarities such as being leaders and men of God, there are also many differences between the two. In terms of leadership, Abraham was a noble leader. Although he grew up in a camp where the notion of one God was not accepted, he eventually manages to become the leader of a tribe and make the people believe in his faith.
