Cottonwood Research Papers
Cottonwood Trees
Native to the United States, cottonwood trees preferred habitat in the wild include moist bottomland
areas and around lakes and streams. Those wishing to add one to their landscape need to consider all
aspects of the tree before planting, as the tree has a variety of drawbacks that don t make it suitable for
many locations.
Basic Description
Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoids), which is also its common name, is a fast growing deciduous
tree that obtains an additional 6 feet of growth yearly and reaches a mature height and width of 100
feet. Due to this habit of quick growth, the wood is soft and brittle, breaking easily in windy
conditions.
Bark, Stems and Foliage
The bark and trunk on a mature cottonwood tree is deeply furrowed, thick and gray and with younger
trees, the bark is a greenish gray. Young stems and branches are a yellowish green in color, changing
to a grayish color as they age. Mature trees develop an open and irregular shaped crown.
Foliage is thick and heart shaped with coarse ridges lining the edges, averaging 2 to 6 inches long.
During the growing season their color is green, changing to yellow during the fall before the foliage
drops during the winter months. The several inch long and flattened petiole allow the leaves to flap
from side to side in windy conditions.
Flowers and Seeds
Eastern cottonwood trees are dioecious, meaning there are male and female trees producing flowers,
though the female trees are the ones

In this portion of the evaluative assignments, there will be an analysis to assess the role and function

Analysis Of The Book The Lottery Essay
When I think of the lottery, I think of a game basically where they choose one number and something
or something gets chosen.
* Setting can best be defined as: B. Thy physical location, time, and social environment in which a
story takes place. In the first paragraph, the setting is described as a beautiful sunny day that is during
the summer. Everything is in bloom and the grass is green. Basically, during this first paragraph, the
author describes it as a perfect day which shows how nice it is and making the reader not realize what
the townspeople are actually going to do, which is the opposite of how this day really is. This sets a
peaceful and happy tone and atmosphere throughout the beginning of the story.
Mood can best be defined as: A. The emotional effect or feeling that a text creates in a reader. The
mood that the villagers seem to be in is a happy and normal mood because they feel that the lottery is
just another normal day. They are neither sad nor angry, just content and used to the tradition of doing
the lottery. They act like nothing is wrong and do not care who dies. I can tell that they are in a content
mood because they don t care about doing the lottery and feel that it is an important part of their lives.
The type of event that the lottery seems to be is a gathering where they chose to kill one person by
stoning them to death.
The possible reason why the people hesitated to help Mr. summers with the box is that they don t want

Relationship Between Sociology And Anthropology
We can say that the study of human beings can be the study of a lifetime. Great thinkers have spent
years getting some answers to questions about human behavior. Today there are many fields and sub
fields of study that engage in trying to understand humankind.
In this lesson, we will discuss the nature and beginnings of sociology and anthropology.
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. discuss the nature and history of sociology and anthropology; and
2. differentiate sociology and anthropology.
3. identify the scope of sociology
Definitions of Sociology and Anthropology
Sociology is a scientific study of human society, its origin, structure, function and direction.
Anthropology is a social science that is concerned with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examples of these great men who did the observations and recordings are Herodotus and Tacitus.
However, it was only in the 18th century that a codified study of cultures began. The study of culture
of other people has been done by Westerners that brought forth to the racist theories about the overall
advancement of different groups.
Sociology has been practiced by the Greeks also, when they studied their surrounding society. It was
in the 19th century when sociology was recognized as an academic discipline and became a part of the
university curriculum.
The word Sociology was taken from two foreign words:
 Socius a Latin term which means companion or associate
 Logos a Greek term for study
Nature of Sociology
The nature of sociology is identified by the following characteristics as enlisted by Robert Bierstadt in
his book Social Order.
1. Sociology is a social science not a physical science. It concentrates on man, his social behavior,
social activities and social life.
2. Sociology is the categorical not a normative discipline. As a categorical discipline, it is a body of

The Tempest Reoccurring Theme Essay
Shakespeare s The Tempest has reoccurring themes that could point toward the end of his career,
including control and imprisonment. These are shown through multiple relationships: Prospero and his
daughter, Prospero with Caliban and Ariel, and his relationship with magic to get what he wants.
Prospero and his daughter, Miranda, escaped to the island twelve years before the play beings. In this
relationship, he has kept his daughter ignorant of who he used to be the Duke of Milan and why they
are exiled to the island. He only tells her after he conjures a storm to cause a shipwreck of the men
who caused him to be banished. This relationship has not only kept her away from the danger she

Kickstarter Persuasive Essay
Shenmue 3 breaks Kickstarter
Whilst some might say that Kickstarter is little more than an unnecessary middle man, many others
have argued that it has revolutionised the way in which the creative industry interacts with its fans by
effectively bridging the gap between creator and consumer. Though the jury is still out on the validity
of this argument, it can t be denied that certain projects would have never seen the light of day without
it, with everything from movie projects to TV series and major electronic products being funded
through the site, which only launched in 2009, but has already risen through the Alexa ranks to 374,
and has earned its place in popular culture.

It was so popular in fact, that the enthusiasm for the project temporarily broke Kickstarter! Take
THAT Kim Kardashian. The total currently sits at 41,000 backers, who have pledged more than $3
million, and there s still 29 days to go on the campaign, with new stretch goals being added almost
daily.
The game s monumental Kickstarter success raises a number of interesting questions, chief amongst
which is whether or not we ll see the model being adopted by larger companies and larger projects It
also raises a point that Kickstarter campaigns have almost become their own form of free viral
marketing, a self fuelled fire of hype spurned on by delirious fans (in this case I count myself among
their number) and the media. Questions also remain surrounding Sony s involvement with the project.
The game was announced to the world at large during their press conference at this year s E3 (which I
ll be covering in more detail next week) and it s been announced as a PS4 title, though so far the
Kickstarter page seems to focus more on the PC version of the game. If Sony if partly funding the
game and using the Kickstarter campaign as a means through which to judge public interest levels in
it, that would surely be a bold move

Analysis Of Lars Eighner s Dumpster Diving
Most people have heard the phrase, Don t judge a book by its cover . This adage means that you
should not make judgements based off of what you see by first glance. This expression is not only
related to books, but to people as well. To clarify, if you see a woman walking down the street with
makeup on most people will begin to think either one of two things at the snap of a glance. A. She is a
makeup artist or B. She is insecure or hiding something. In reality, none of these answers could be the
possible truth. This woman can work at a restaurant as a hostess and just enjoy putting on makeup
occasionally. Our covers are can be based on a numerous things like the way we speak or displaying
common behavior similar to a group of people. The author of the essay Mother Tongue , other wise
known as Amy Tan, writes about her mother s broken english and how it has taken an impact on her
ability. In addition to this, Lars Eighner composes an essay called Dumpster Diving in which he
records his experience as a homeless man on the street scavenging through garbage to find his next
meal. Evident in both the essays and reality, Amy Tan s mother, Lars Eighner, as well as myself, have
all been judged by our verbal, stereotypical, and visual covers by others in society thus affecting how
we are regarded.

Environmental Problems Of Overpopulation
As the population is growing upward of 7.6 billion people, the world is facing environmental
hardships. Since the population is growing to an unsustainable level, this issue becomes prominent for
all people. Due to the population increasing, resources such as food, water and fuel are becoming
scarce. Overpopulation, defined by Merriam Webster Dictionary, is the condition of having a
population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a
population crash. There are a few causes of overpopulation, such as the declining death rate, better
developed medicine, a lack of family planning and immigration. There is a recent decline in death
rates and an increase of birth rates, a main source of the population increase. When the population
increases, so do the environmental problems it entails. In the 18th century, philosopher Thomas
Malthus predicted that overpopulation would cause the Earth to be stripped of its resources. However,
the world has mostly taken concern with the growing numbers and not the environmental issues. The
problems that come with overpopulation include global warming, species extinction and deforestation,
loss of fresh water and depletion of natural resources. Overpopulation will eventually become the
world s most eminent environmental issue because the earth will not be able to sustain all of humanity.
Throughout history, overpopulation has been seen as a threat by three major people. First, Thomas
Malthus, in

Sectional Garage Door Essay
Sectional Garage Door
Home owners are now considering the garage door as an important element in the overall façade of
the house. Not only should a garage door be functional, it also has to look good.
There are many garage door options available. In choosing the one for your garage, you will need to
consider durability, design, maintenance and cost. A popular choice among home owners is the
sectional garage door.
What is a Sectional Garage Door?
Sectional garage doors consist of large, separate panels, which are positioned parallel to the ceiling.
They open vertically going up, suspended just under the ceiling. This type of garage door is typically
composed of up to eight sections hinged together and held in position by brackets. This mechanism
allows the door to slide up and down.

This is because sectional doors can be easily fitted into any opening. Also, they typically don t take up
too much vertical space when opened. The doors don t swing out when opened. Instead, they slide and

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Sectional Garage Door
Sectional doors are considered the best option for driveways with limited spaces. You don t have to
move your car away from the garage when opening the door, as what happens when you have an up
and over type of garage door. This means you can park your vehicle close while waiting for the garage
door to open. When opened, sectional doors provide access to the entire drive through height and
width, which make them great options for garage owners with large vehicles.
This type of garage door also offers flexibility in terms of materials used. You can choose materials
that provide the functionality you need. For instance, if you want ventilation in the garage, you can opt
for panels with vents. If you prefer additional lighting, panels made of glass can be a good

Supply and Demand Advertising Industry
Supply Demand
In recent years, internet advertising has taken the advertising industry by storm, as it continues to
experience huge, incremental growth. Companies are moving away from the dark ages of print ads

advertising revenues soared to $10.7 billion in the third quarter of 2013, representing a 15% increase
over the $9.3 billion in the third quarter of 2012(IAB, 2013). The graph below was retrieved from the

CPM prices can vary greatly depending on the popularity of the website.(Online Advertising Pricing
Models, 2000). In a cost per click model (CPC), the advertiser pays for only the number of people
who click on the ad. Google AdWords, for example, allows advertisers to bid for keywords against
one another in fast online auctions. Some advertisers are willing to bid as much as $50 for a single
click on a popular keyword, such as mesothelioma (Gleick, 2011).
Demand As consumers spend more of their time online, the demand for internet advertising continues
to rise. Traditional advertising methods such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, billboards,
and directories are being abandoned by companies who desire to shift their marketing strategies to the
web. Advertisers are taking advantage of the benefits of online advertising, including its low cost and
ability to reach a large number of consumers. The internet makes it possible and cost effective to
operate markets with millions of participants and millions of products. Every day, eBay has two

more people than traditional advertising at a fraction of the cost. In addition, online advertising is

Black Plague And The Black Epidemic
Black Plague The Black Plague outbreak was one of the scariest events in human history. The people
were afraid to do everyday activities and carry on with their normal routines. This plague is known to
almost every person on Earth. Even as a kid, teachers tell their students about this plague. Even the
thought of an outbreak like the Black Plague makes people s skin crawl. I am included in that
category. It has gotten to the point that when any outbreak of any type or kind of disease happens that
the world gets into panic mode. All of this panic comes from the Black Death. In this synthesis and

The disease spread through eight districts in the Chinese and Mongol dynasties. The deaths were so
severe that some areas didn t even have time to bury all the bodies, so they just stacked them up
against the city walls. Next, the plague spread to Europe, it arrived in Europe through trading ships.
By the time the ships landed in Messina. Most of the crew members on the ships were either dead or
infected. The abandon ships peaked a lot of interest and since the ships were infested with rodents, the
locals that looted from the ships helped the disease spread even further. By 1348 the disease spread all
the way to Genoa and Venice. Then the disease went from Italy and spread northwest France, Spain,
Portugal, and England by June 1348. This is a rapid spread rate since six countries in less than a year.
Although the disease was not yet done with Europe, it then spread east through Germany and
Scandinavia through 1350. The last stop in Europe was Russia in 1351. The last stop for the Black
Plague was the Middle East. The outbreak in the Middle East led to serious depopulation and
economic structures just like the other countries. When the disease reached Mecca, the people of
Mecca tried to blame it on non believers. The plague continued to kill people all the way up to the
Seventeenth century and there have even been isolated cases as recent as 1980 (Black Death). The
Black Plague had many different types of affects that it influenced on the people exposed to it.

In publicly held companies, poison pills refers to use various ways to prevent the takeover bids.
Takeover bids is bidder trying to obtain control of the target company, either by soliciting proxies to
get elected to the board or by acquiring a controlling block of shares and using correlation of the vote
to get elected to the board of directors(Paul H. Malatesta, Ralph A. Walking, 1988).
Common types of poison pills
1. Preferred stock plan: The target company issues a large number of new stock to existing
shareholders, usually preferred shares. These new stock often have severe redemption provisions
(Protect Yourself In A Merger Lawyers.com, 2016). If allowed occur acquisition, new stock will be
converted into a large number of common share, it immediately dilute the percentage of target
company stock acquirer s, and makes it more expensive to obtain 50% of the target company stock.
2. Flipover right plan: Huge debts to the target company, and try to make the debt burden is too high
and attractive. Finally, the acquirer will have to pay the debts of the target company.

Racial Assumptions
The main point that really stuck out to me during the reading of Two assumptions one ideal was to
look beneath the surface of the racial iceberg. Some underlying factors that affect racial attitudes are
often below the level of awareness. An example of an underlying issue that surrounds the racial
iceberg is how racism and inequalities are evident in the U.S. public school systems. Institutions such
as schools make up our everyday realities about our assumptions on race and ethnicity. Students of
color (i.e. African American, Hispanic, and Native American) experience disparities in head start
programs, college readiness, disciplinary actions. Currently, in New York minorities tend to have less
access to competitive math and science classes.

The Sociology Of Health And Mental Illness
John Goulder (13005053) MBBS SSC Year 2: Library Project Dissertation Supervisor: Professor
Paul Higgs Submitted: Tuesday, 13 January 2015 A Tale of Two Asylums: Reviewing the context and
influences of two theorists, Michel Foucault and Erving Goffman, on the sociology of health and
mental illness. Word count: 3,132 John Goulder! 1 Introduction: Mental Health as Disparate Social
Object Antipsychiatry was as much a cultural phenomenon as an academic or institutional one. Whilst
the work of Laing (1960) and Szasz (1960) can be rooted in the Fruedo Marxist methodological
individualism of critical theory (Rogers Pilgrim, 2010: 14), or even a broader constructionist critique
of medical truth, it just as easily lends itself to a more limited historicist Libertarian reading: mental
illness as socio political deviance within an encroaching state (Sumner, 1994). Within this interface
must be located the panoply of iconographic representation (Shorter, 1997: 273) within wider mass
culture: Sumner cites the example of Ken Kesey s One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest as salacious and
sensational as it may be which became, for a generation, a precipitation of populist anti sentiment
towards psychiatric institutions and their operative physicians. It is clear then that the dialectic of
mind and its healer transcends theoretical partitions, spans academic disciplines, and crosses the great
divide to take up its place within the popular consciousness. Considering this, and also

Losing a Language Explication Essay
W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like
characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden
meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests:
language and words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone
to emphasize the loss and quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He
carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray
from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the
piece but to become the dominant thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to the
loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this with the
young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with parents and
children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance that the change in
language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line, farther and farther away.
The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly in the lines we are wrong and
dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we and the other as them, new
owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once familiar to the speaker is now
replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is formed. Because the speaker is
direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone simply because of what the speaker is
explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem also contributes to the tone. There are no
punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad
mood. The poem is divided into fourteen couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the
end of a couplet, we are forced to slow down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. In
addition, most of the lines are complete clauses

Political Campaign Contributions Of The United States Essay
Political Campaign Contributions Recently in the U.S., the most frequent mentioned topic would be
2016 presidential election. People on both sides have donated to political campaigns from the very
beginning. And one of the concerns is that can campaign donors write off any of these contributions
on their federal income taxes? According to the IRS, the answer is a very clear NO. You can t deduct
contributions made to a political candidate, a campaign committee, or a newsletter fund.
Advertisements in convention bulletins and admissions to dinners or programs that benefit a political
party or political candidate aren t deductible, informed in IRS Publication 529 (Political Contributions,
2015). It is also non deductible for any of the portions of dues to lobbying or political activities. Public
funding of Presidential elections means that qualified Presidential candidates receive federal
government funds to pay for the valid expenses of their political campaigns in both the primary and
general elections. Most political contributions, for the obvious reason of creating a more politically
disinterested tax system, are not tax deductible. Political contributions and its limit have a long history

contributions to candidate William McKinley. It was controversial of the growing influence of big

The Depth Psychology Of Evil, And The Nature Of God
Corbett s parallel to his former religion continues in his chapter on the depth psychology of evil, and
the nature of God. In this section, he moves into theodicy, the attempt to justify God in the face of evil
(p.129). As Corbett explains, God image within the Western monotheistic philosophy is one that is
both all good and all powerful, but that the presence of evil in our world creates a paradox of these
two natures. The tried arguments is that either God is all powerful, but in allowing and/or creating evil
means that he is not all good, or that he is all good, but inability to stop evil means that he is not all
powerful. This point creates a paradox of the Christian God, making him impossible in the mind of
modern person. Nevertheless, in his true fashion, Corbett moves away from Christian ideology, but
not away from the essence of it entirely. Instead, he proposes instead a different nature of God. That is,
a God of dual natures: abstract and concrete. In God s abstract nature, he is timeless and perfect, while
in his concrete nature, he is not all powerful, not changeless, and not all knowing, and not the ultimate
source in the universe (p.131). But, he is still loving. The implications therefore are that using force is
outside of his loving nature, so God cannot stop evil, and that because god is within us all, he suffers
with us. Corbett s argument makes God compatible with actually sound belief in the nature of evil.

The short story Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell is about Orwell s experience with peer
pressure as a sub divisional police officer in Moulmein, Lower Burma. This experience occurred
during the 1930s when the Burmese had a very strong anti European feeling because they did not want
people who are not natives controlling their own country`s domestic and international affairs. It
commenced when the sub inspector at a police station asked him to control an elephant who wrecked
the bazaar, livestock, a house and ate fruit in the city. Its mahout, the only person who can control it
when it was in that state, was a twelve hours` journey away from the elephant because he went in the

Most of the differences deal with the traits and situations the protagonists faced. One difference
between the peer pressure each of the main characters faced was that Esperanza faced peer pressure
dealing with beauty and sexuality. Another difference between the peer pressure is that Orwell`s
experience involves a death of a creature while Esperanza`s experiences do not mention death
anywhere. The final difference is that in Shooting an Elephant, there was a greater possibility for
Orwell to go to trial but Esperanza can`t since she doesn t know who raped her.
First of all, Esperanza`s experiences dealt with her beauty, physical traits, and sexuality. She wanted to
be cute, have large hips and have a relationship with a boy. Esperanza was also raped and tricking into
kissing and eventually changed her views on boys and men. However, George Orwell`s experiences
dealt with defending himself and the natives. It also dealt with colonialism and imperialism. In

The Music Of Elvis Presley
There were plenty of music coming out and showing up in the 1960 s. It was time; time for a new
form of music, a new sound, it was time for a revolution. There were all types of music being played
and new music being formed. There were all sorts of bands playing different kinds of music and
playing with their own styles while taking over the airwaves. Whether it be rock, soul, or any other
type of music, it was a revolution. This also led to new bands forming and breaking into the industry.
In the sixties rock music comes of age and dominates the popular music charts. Elvis Presley
continued to score hits in the early part of the decade, but the music continued to diversify with the
folk revival, the Brill Building sound, Phil Spector s wall of sound, girl groups and surf music, all

American artists back to the forefront of the pop charts. By 1964 American artists are sharing the top
of the charts with U.K. bands led by great bands like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In the U.S.

Religious Motives For The Age Of Exploration
The age of exploration was an age of discovery and trade which started in the late 15yh century and
ended in the 18th century. During this time the discovery of the new world and new trade routes led to
large steps in economic change and growth in Europe. Explorers motives for discovery were strongly
rooted in both economic growth and religious beliefs. However, Religion was not so much of a
motivator as it was a way of justification for the atrocities committed by European explorers in the
name of personal economic gains. Explorers and slave traders alike claimed that they were relieving
the natives of their natural bestial tendencies, when in fact they were simply justifying their cruelty
and torment of the indigenous people for the economic expansion of Europe.
Explores and enslavers alike knew their actions in enslaving the indigenous peoples of Africa where
deplorable, however, they continued them due to the believed justification of their actions through
religious motives. The explorers and enslavers convinced themselves that their actions were saving the
natives. The religion they believed justified their actions. They convinced themselves that they were
saving these natives from eternal damnation and showing them the true path, the path of Christianity
and of Jesus. Zurara (map maker and historian who lived during the beginning of the age of

The New Year Essay
The New Year is upon us once again, ready or not. This holiday seems to me the one that provokes the
most thought and reflection, which is a good thing really. We all need to assess where we are in our
journey of life and make adjustments. For the Christian, this is especially important. Ephesians 5:1 2
reminds us to Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as
Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. The past year
has been a great learning year for me in the area of relationships. I ve learned a lot about myself,
others, and especially about how much God loves ME! Some of what I learned was very disappointing
as I saw so much selfishness in relationships. I know that I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I just
recognized it more, and saw the repercussions many times. Those consequences are painful and the
effects are trickle down. It has made me really think about Love a lot more and how Love as God
intended it to be should be evident in our lives ALWAYS, and not just when it s convenient for us.
God spoke to me about His Love through my dog, Tracker. Yep, this is the Tracker story that I ve been
meaning to put out there. This isn t exactly how I thought I d convey it to everyone but as time has
passed and I think about it even more, I know without a doubt that the truth that God impressed upon
me that night is what is most important about the story. Tracker is an

Huge Divisions in Haiti Lead to Unrest
The ridged class, race and social structures in Haiti led to huge divisions in Haitian society and unrest.
The majority of the population were slaves and slavery played a massive role in the Haitian economy
and its abolishment had a massive impact. The events occurring in Europe, the French revolution for
example, led to the slave revolt and ultimately the independence of Haiti in 1804. The rebellion in
Haiti undoubtedly had an important role in world history.
Between 1756 and1763, the economy of Saint Domingue gradually expanded, sugar and coffee
becoming important export crops. The colony underwent rapid expansion during wars because it
brought about a lot of demand for resources. In 1767, it exported 72 million pounds of raw sugar and
51 million pounds of refined sugar, one million pounds of indigo, and two million pounds of cotton
[1]. Saint Domingue became known as the Pearl of Antilles and became one of the richest colonies in
the 18th century French empire. By the 1780 s Haiti was producing forty percent of all sugar and sixty
percent of all coffee consumed in Europe. It was the jewel of the French colonial economy and was
vital for their strength.
In 1789, a total of 500,000 African slaves were present in Haiti, working on plantations and were
being ruled by 32,000 white colonialists [2]. There were three major groups in the Haitian society,
which were determined by social status and race. At the top of the social hierarchy were the Grands

China has archaeological records dating from 3000 BCE. However, records on Chinese music only
date as far back from the Song Dynasty (960 1279 CE). There are four chronological stages for
Chinese music: formative, international, national, and the world music period. During the formative
period, instruments made of bamboo pipes were constructed to imitate the fenghuang, translated to a
Phoenix. Records from the Zhou Dynasty (1046 256 BCE) are the earliest surviving written records.
At this time, people used the eight sound classification method to classify musical instruments based
on the materials used to make them: stone, earth, bamboo, metal, skin, silk, wood, and guord. (Malm
2016) Under the stone category, some instruments include the stone chimes, vessel flutes, and tubular
flutes. A cermaic xun, which is a wind instrument, is classified as earth. The wind instrument called
xiao would be under the bamboo category. Metal instruments include Zhong bronze bells and the
bronze drum. Instruments made from skin or leather include the tao drums. Instruments classified as

Reformulating the Hazards Mitigation Paradigm Essay
Scholarly assessments of our nation s capability to effectively respond to hazards suggest a paradigm
shift is needed regarding the future direction of research, policy and tactics for preparing and
responding to natural and human made hazards. This paper will provide a historical overview of our
nation s emergency preparedness and response posture, examine the need to reformulate the existing
hazards paradigm into a broader resiliency framework, and suggest roles and responsibilities
characteristic of government and community stakeholders in the context of this broadened approach.
Mechanisms needed to achieve a successful implementation of this improved strategy will also be
examined.

An effort to centralize federal emergency functions was instituted in 1979 where many separate
disaster related responsibilities were merged into the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA). FEMA developed an integrated emergency management system, realigning its mission from
civil defense into disaster relief, recovery and mitigation programs using an all hazards approach.
Following the terrorist attacks of 2001, FEMA coordinated its activities with the newly formed Office
of Homeland Security by joining 22 other federal agencies, programs and offices which became the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2003 (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 2010).
Despite efforts to better organize federal response programs, expectations regarding improved federal
response to natural disasters were shattered by FEMA s poor performance in dealing with hurricanes
(Waugh Tierney, 2007, p.33). While integrating FEMA into DHS was intended to the federal response
capability, DHS was found to be plagued by high employee turnover and low morale to the degree
Homeland Security had the lowest job satisfaction rating out of 36 government agencies surveyed;
DHS instituted an ineffective and oft misunderstood color coded threat warning system; DHS
response to Hurricane Katrina exposed a lack of coordination and leadership; and, the agency s
integration of people, assets and technology into one overarching entity has proved complicated and
overwhelming (Fessler, 2008). Such

How Did Akhenaten Change Of Religion
Akhenaten
During the time of the new kingdom a powerful Pharaoh came into power.
Akhenaten, also known as Amenophis IV believed that only one god should rule universally, and that
god is known as the Aten. Akhenaten was the crucial changer of polytheism. Changing polytheism to
monotheism was an enormous impact on society back then and now. But, Nicholas Reeves uses all
sorts of evidence and opinions of his, to conclude that Akhenaten changed the religion of Egypt.
Historians have asked why Akhenaten changed the religion of Egypt, and many opinions have come
into contact. Reeves argues that, even though Akhenaten was the founder a new faith he desperately
used the new religion for political uses. In an attempt to reassert the authority ... Show more content

Reeves interprets the changing of religion for political reasons, and it all started with Hatshepsut.
Thutmose III was the sixth pharaoh of the 18th dynasty and was ruling co regent with his aunt
Hatshepsut. Akhenaten wanted to restore power in himself, not because he cared about his people only
because he thought the gods had more power than him. To fix that problem, he wanted only one god,
the Aten, to rule universally. Reeves doesn t assume that Akhenaten was changing beliefs for
theological reasons, but it was for the sake of his power. From the start of his reign, it was clear that
Akhenaten was determined to change something, and was willing to share his beliefs in monotheism.
Pharaoh, it is clear, was a man with a mission; of rare intelligence, recognizably well tutored in the
theological minutiae...despite his age, he was certain in his beliefs and determined to share them (91).
There was a text discovered called the Great Hym of Aten and it is a hieroglyphic text discovered in el
Amrna in the tomb of Ay. It was believed to have been written by Akhenaten himself translated by
W.J. Murnane. Reeves points out that the hym was rather a strong emphasis on how one should
portray the nature of reality, and rather weak connection between Aten and the kingdom. He also notes
that the hym as well as many other texts, never emphasize sympathy or kindness to the Egyptian
people, and it only praises Aten and the relationship with Akhenaten. Whom you have taught your
ways and your might...you yourself are lifetime, one lives by you. This is showing us how much
praise Akhenaten is giving to the Aten and how he lived for

  • 2. Cottonwood Research Papers Cottonwood Trees Native to the United States, cottonwood trees preferred habitat in the wild include moist bottomland areas and around lakes and streams. Those wishing to add one to their landscape need to consider all aspects of the tree before planting, as the tree has a variety of drawbacks that don t make it suitable for many locations. Basic Description Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoids), which is also its common name, is a fast growing deciduous tree that obtains an additional 6 feet of growth yearly and reaches a mature height and width of 100 feet. Due to this habit of quick growth, the wood is soft and brittle, breaking easily in windy conditions. Bark, Stems and Foliage The bark and trunk on a mature cottonwood tree is deeply furrowed, thick and gray and with younger trees, the bark is a greenish gray. Young stems and branches are a yellowish green in color, changing to a grayish color as they age. Mature trees develop an open and irregular shaped crown. Foliage is thick and heart shaped with coarse ridges lining the edges, averaging 2 to 6 inches long. The Sociology Of Health And Mental Illness John Goulder (13005053) MBBS SSC Year 2: Library Project Dissertation Supervisor: Professor Paul Higgs Submitted: Tuesday, 13 January 2015 A Tale of Two Asylums: Reviewing the context and influences of two theorists, Michel Foucault and Erving Goffman, on the sociology of health and mental illness. Word count: 3,132 John Goulder! 1 Introduction: Mental Health as Disparate Social Object Antipsychiatry was as much a cultural phenomenon as an academic or institutional one. Whilst the work of Laing (1960) and Szasz (1960) can be rooted in the Fruedo Marxist methodological individualism of critical theory (Rogers Pilgrim, 2010: 14), or even a broader constructionist critique of medical truth, it just as easily lends itself to a more limited historicist Libertarian reading: mental illness as socio political deviance within an encroaching state (Sumner, 1994). Within this interface must be located the panoply of iconographic representation (Shorter, 1997: 273) within wider mass culture: Sumner cites the example of Ken Kesey s One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest as salacious and sensational as it may be which became, for a generation, a precipitation of populist anti sentiment towards psychiatric institutions and their operative physicians. It is clear then that the dialectic of mind and its healer transcends theoretical partitions, spans academic disciplines, and crosses the great divide to take up its place within the popular consciousness. • 27. Losing a Language Explication Essay W.S. Merwin immediately sets a tone for Losing a Language in the title, hinting at the lament like characteristic of the poem. In fact, the title is not supposed to be a metaphor or even contain a hidden meaning that the reader must deduce by reading on. The poem is exactly what the title suggests: language and words, and thus communication, has been lost. Merwin creates a nostalgic and sad tone to emphasize the loss and quickly establishes the direction of the poem using simple diction. He carries this simple language, along with the mournful tone, into the rest of the work and does not stray from the subject. This allows the central idea, the loss of language, to not only persist throughout the piece but to become the dominant thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A second conflict introduced in the first couplet is the gap between the old and the young due to the loss or change of language. The speaker states that the old still remember and contrasts this with the young, who have fewer words. In the fifth couplet, we see a similar situation with parents and children. The speaker gives us two ends of a spectrum to demonstrate the distance that the change in language has created. We see a physical representation of this with the line, farther and farther away. The gap is also represented in the sixth and ninth couplets, particularly in the lines we are wrong and dark / in the eyes of the new owners. By referring to one side as we and the other as them, new owners, or somebody, we can see two sides and that what was once familiar to the speaker is now replaced by something foreign (line 21) and an us vs. them gap is formed. Because the speaker is direct and clear, we are able to recognize the nostalgic tone simply because of what the speaker is explicitly telling us. However, the structure of the poem also contributes to the tone. There are no punctuations throughout the entire poem, yet we still read it slow enough to create a dramatic and sad mood. The poem is divided into fourteen couplets, each with a substantial gap between them. At the end of a couplet, we are forced to slow down and fully pause before moving on to a new section. • 32. The Depth Psychology Of Evil, And The Nature Of God Corbett s parallel to his former religion continues in his chapter on the depth psychology of evil, and the nature of God. In this section, he moves into theodicy, the attempt to justify God in the face of evil (p.129). As Corbett explains, God image within the Western monotheistic philosophy is one that is both all good and all powerful, but that the presence of evil in our world creates a paradox of these two natures. The tried arguments is that either God is all powerful, but in allowing and/or creating evil means that he is not all good, or that he is all good, but inability to stop evil means that he is not all powerful. This point creates a paradox of the Christian God, making him impossible in the mind of modern person. Nevertheless, in his true fashion, Corbett moves away from Christian ideology, but not away from the essence of it entirely. Instead, he proposes instead a different nature of God. That is, a God of dual natures: abstract and concrete. In God s abstract nature, he is timeless and perfect, while in his concrete nature, he is not all powerful, not changeless, and not all knowing, and not the ultimate source in the universe (p.131). But, he is still loving. The implications therefore are that using force is outside of his loving nature, so God cannot stop evil, and that because god is within us all, he suffers with us. Corbett s argument makes God compatible with actually sound belief in the nature of evil. Careful not to belittle the very real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Explorers motives for discovery were strongly rooted in both economic growth and religious beliefs. To fix that problem, he wanted only one god, the Aten, to rule universally. Reeves doesn t assume that Akhenaten was changing beliefs for theological reasons, but it was for the sake of his power.
