Every year World Stroke Day
is observed on October 29th to raise
awareness of the prevention and
treatments of strokes.
What is stroke?
Stroke is a temporary interruption of blood supply or
temporary seepage of blood into the brain, which causes a
sudden neurological deficit.
A report by the Indian Stroke Association indicates that approximately
18 lakh stroke cases are reported every year in India.
Stroke is presently the third leading cause of mortality and the sixth
leading cause of disability adjusted life years in India.
Worldwide, brain stroke is the second leading cause of death and third
leading cause of disability.
Low and middle income countries (India), have witnessed more than 100
percent increase in stroke whereas the developed countries have witnessed a
drop of 42 percent.
The average incidence rate of stroke in India is 145 per one lakh
(1,00,000) population. According to researchers, three Indians suffer a stroke
every minute.
Elderly age group are more commonly affected by brain stroke, it also can
occur to anyone at any age.
Understanding the risk factors and recognizing the symptoms may help
in preventing a brain stroke.
Simultaneously receiving early diagnosis and treatment increases the
chances for complete recovery.
Importance of World Stroke Day (WSD)
Every year, the October 29 is observed as World Stroke Day to
build public awareness about the condition and to find ways to reduce
the burden of stroke.

matters when a patient has a stroke.

When to call emergency?
Act FAST at the first sign of stroke. We can use letters F.A.S.T.
to spot the signs of stroke and know when to call emergency.
Here, F.A.S.T. stands for:
1.Face (drooping of the face)
2.Arms (arm weakness)
3.Speech (slurred speech)
4.Time (time to call for an emergency)
BE-FAST in recognizing stroke symptoms
B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance or difficulty walking in a straight line
E- Eyes: Sudden squinting of the eyes or loss of vision in the eyes.
F- Facial: Facial drooping on one side or deviation of angle of mouth to one side
A-Arm weakness: When they are unable to lift or hold something with the arm
S- Speech: Sudden loss of speech. The person is not able to speak even one or
two words. There can be loss of language function or speech is slurred or both
T–Timely action: When you see these symptoms, call the ambulance
immediately and shift the patient to the nearest stroke-ready hospital.
Steps to prevent brain stroke
Brain stroke can be prevented by following these steps:
• Maintaining healthy lifestyle.
• Avoid smoking
• Avoid alcohol intake
• Regular physical activity
• Dietary modifications - limiting sodium, meats and sweets.
• Regular health checkups
