The independent variable that will be measured is the rings of the Hapalochlaena
lunulata. This will be controlled and manipulated using a stick with different sizes
of circles at 3 distances from the octopus s location in the tank. The three distances
will be at 60cm, 30cm and 15cm and the diameter of the circles at the end of the
stick will be 4cm, 10cm and 17cm. This will be tested on 3 female and 3 male
octopuses of relatively the same age. A few controls that will need to be insured is
the temperature of the tank, the size of the tank, the objects in the tank and their
location and, the location of the octopus in the tank. The dependent variable
measured is the size and intensity of the blue rings. This will be measured through
photos that will be analyzed on a software on a computer.
The gender of the octopus is not expected to influence the results as they are
extremely similar in size, appearance and behavior. The null hypothesis is that the
intensity of the blue rings will not differ or is not affected by the proximity and size
