Roxanne Wyns (LIBIS) contributed with a presentation about interoperability "International Image Interoperability Framework @ KU Leuven (Belgium). Current applications and future projects". Current applications and future projects". Description of her presentation: There is an increased use of digital resources in humanities research and the expectations towards accessibility are high. Researchers want their material to be available faster, in higher resolution and multiple formats. They want tools for swift deep-zooming on the artworks and manuscripts, for browsing through complex objects in a heartbeat, and for comparing multiple image-based resources stored in digital repositories all over the word. In this context LIBIS, the Library information service of the University of Leuven (Belgium), implemented IIIF and the Mirador viewer for the interoperability and visualisation of the digitised manuscripts stored in the university’s long-term preservation repository. IIIF or the International Image Interoperability Framework is a community-developed framework for sharing high-resolution images in an efficient and standardized way across institutional boundaries by offering a set of shared API specifications for the interoperable functionality in digital image repositories. Using a IIIF manifest URL, a researcher can simply pull the images and related contextual information such as the structure of a complex object or document, metadata and rights information into any IIIF compliant viewer such as the Mirador viewer. Simply put, a researcher can access a digital resource from the British Library and from the KU Leuven Libraries in a single viewer for research, while allowing the institutions to exert control over the quality and context of the resources offered.... Sound and Vision, the EYE, and the National Archives of the Netherlands have collectively awarded over $14 million in tenders between 2007-2012. Principles for the tenders include being highly specific in project specifications, combining similar materials into large batches to reduce costs, and preparing materials in advance so contractors don't factor preparation work into their bids. Lessons learned are that specificity and transparency in the selection process reduces legal claims, and focusing on repeatable, standard processes offers the best value for the money spent.

In December 2004 Google announced its plans to digitise and publish millions of books from 5 prestigious Anglo-American academic libraries by the year 2015. Initiated by French fears that Google's initiative could create a bias towards Anglo-American language and culture, Europe quickly united to mobilise funds for the digitisation, preservation and accessibility of European cultural heritage and the creation of a European Digital Library, including 6M digital works from libraries, muse-ums and archives by 2010. Today The European Library (TEL) is a multilingual portal offering integrated access to the tens of millions of resources of Europe's national libraries. It offers free federated searching and delivers digital objects - some free, some priced. The EU stressed that the European Digital Library should not be constructed from scratch, but build on existing initia-tives such as TEL, because TEL has a long history of successfully implementing and using some of the vital ingredients for the European Digital Library. These include A) internal & external collaboration and cooperative organisational networks, B) a technological platform based on creating, maintaining and conforming to common standards in i) data harvesting and ac-cess protocols, ii) metadata and iii) collection descriptions and C) multilingual access.
