Working to a Brief
      LO1
      Name
Contractual Brief
Definition
This is an agreement to complete a particular task that has to be done within a certain
time period for a set amount of money.
Advantages
If your media company doesn’t stick to the agreement made then usually the will face
     legal actions such as court.

Disadvantages
you could be the one sued if you dropped out of the contracted once signed for.
Formal Brief
Definition
This is where the client itself provides the brief for the media company that simply
launches the product they are wanting to create.
Advantages
An advantage of this would be half of the work is already completed from what the
client has brought and only additional information will be needed to gain full
     prospective of what is happening.
Disadvantages
If your client or yourself breaks the contract then you or your client will not always be
able to sue because its not always legally binding.
Informal Brief
Definition
This is usually just a meeting for a verbal agreement with no written contract or
document to secure the contract to discuss an agreement upon the project.
Advantages
Informal briefs usually don’t have a set time to work around to complete the product
so you don’t have to work to a certain time scale because they isn't one given.

Disadvantages
It can be very risky because they isn't a proper contract involved so legal actions
wouldn’t be able to be taken.
Co-Operative Brief
Definition
This is where more than one company is hired to work on the particular task to
    complete the project.
Advantages
This saves a lot of time because they are one that one company working on one
product enabling the job will be done quicker.

Disadvantages
If someone doesn’t agree on something the brief would then have to be submitted to
both companies again to make another decision.
Negotiated Brief
Definition
The is where two companies are working on a brief and they disagree on what's going
to be made. They then get an external person to help create a new brief that has
both ideas into it so they isn't arguments.
Advantages
Both parties end up happy.

Disadvantages
They both will have to compromise on the different ideas.
Commission Brief
Definition
a large company hires a smaller one to make the product for them like they have
    asked.

Advantages
Two clients put their input in, rather than one external client.

Disadvantages
Clients may disagree with work as it may not be what the asked for.
Tender Brief
Definition
A client wants something made and asks several companies to make it. Each one
creates a brief – the best one gets picked by the client which is then produced.

Advantages
Client gets lots of options and is able to pick the best one.

Disadvantages
A company may put lots of work and effort in, but not get chosen.
Competition Brief
Definition
A brief is made available to all participating production companies

Advantages
The client only has to pay the winning company (if at all)
Often used as a free to enter competition

Disadvantages
If loads of people enter there’s only a small chance that you would win the
     competition
My Brief
Which structure/structures will the Vegetarian Recipe Cards brief use?
Reference your reasons for choice/choices

We chose our idea because we thought that it was very interesting and exciting.
Reading the Brief
Why is important to thoroughly read your brief?
• It will allow you to completely understand what is being asked of you.
• It allows you to see the nature and the demand of the brief
Reading the Brief
What is the nature and demand of the Vegetarian Recipe Cards brief?

These terms are exactly what have been asked of us and what the product ends up like in the
   final presentation.
Negotiating a Brief
Why is it important to discuss the brief with your client prior to production?

• Time with the client is very important to put across any concerns or extra ideas you
    may have.
• If you do not ask questions you may create something which may not match the brief
and if the work doesn’t match the brief we do not get paid.
Negotiating a Brief
What are the advantages and disadvantages of employing discretion with a brief?
It allows us to be creative and put our own ideas into a brief. As I have been asked to make a
recipe card, I could decide myself which age range I make it for as the brief does not specify.
However I must stick to the brief guidelines.
Negotiating a Brief
Are there any potential legal/ethical/regulatory issues with the brief’s proposed product?
I will insure that I do not offend anybody or anybody’s religion views.
If I was to use copyrighted material such as stock images, I would have to get a explicit written
      permission by the orginator.
Negotiating a Brief
Amendments you have considered to;
The Product
I may need to change the product due to being too ambitious and not being able to accomplish
    the work set.

The Budget
If I do not have enough money to complete the task, our budget will need to be increased or else
the scope of the project will need to be downscaled.

The Conditions
If we do not have enough time to get the task done, we will have to amend timescales allocated
so that we have longer to finish the project.
Opportunities
What opportunities could this brief allow you to explore?

Self Development
I will have worked for a professional company and have expanded my portfolio when working for
     these.

Learning new skills
Working to a brief is a new skill that I will be working on and also a timescale is new to me.

Multi-skilling
As I will be doing photography, graphic design and writing copy I will have expanded my multi-
     tasking skills.

Contributing to a brief
I will contribute a theme to the recipe cards for children which I will be creating, but also stick to
     the brief.
