Fact Profile – Vegetarian’s
Hannah Harkus & Maddie Sanderson
An outline of the various reasons that
people can be vegetarian
Many people become vegetarians or vegans because of the
healthier lifestyle it has to offer, for example having lots fibre is
part of a very good diet. Vegetarians usually eat lots more fibre
than meat-eaters.
Other people choose to be vegetarians because of animals. A
lot of people in the world are against animal cruelty and don’t
agree with killing animals or harming them, for food, drink or other
materials. ‘Many people don't want to eat something that had to
die just so they could be nourished.’
However the environment drives a lot of people in the vegetarian
direction this is because in many ways, the vegetarian option
does help the environment. Large amounts of water are used in
raising beef and other livestock, this is water that could be used
for other purposes, in some peoples eyes.

A definition of the term
vegetarian
A vegetarian is a person who doesn’t eat any meat but also sometimes even other
animals products such as eggs etc. a lot of people do it for moral, religious, or even
health reasons.
Wiki says that the earliest records of vegetarianism come from ancient India and
ancient Greece in the 5th century BCE.
There are a lot of different vegetarians such as:
 Pescetarian- who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception
of fish. Although the word is not commonly used and a Pescetarian is not
technically a vegetarian, more and more people are adopting this kind of diet,
usually for health reasons or as a stepping stone to a fully vegetarian diet.
http://vegetarian.about.com/od/glossary/g/Pescatarian.htm
 Pollo-pescetarian- they only eat white meat, this is because its high in protein and a
great weight loss diet.
 Flexitarian- they only eat plant based foods with occasional inclusions of meat.
 Fruitatian- this is quite straight forward, its someone that eats fruit, nuts and seeds
without the inclusion of any meat products.
 Lacto vegetarian- this is a vegetarions diet that will include a lot of dairy products
such as milk, yogurts, cheeses but doesn’t include eggs.

 Quorn is not only a type of vegetarian
food, it is also a company specifically
designed for vegetarians. They produce a
wide range of foods, however the most
popular are their Quorn Mince and Quorn
Sausages. But they do sell things such as
Chicken strips, Chicken burgers, Beef
Burgers and many more.
Is Veganism a Religion?
 A lot of people don’t think that veganism is a religion.
 As a dietary need, veganism goes a step further than
vegetarian from meat, chicken or fish, etc.
 Some vegatians also won't wear leather or silk items
from animals or use different products that have
been tested on animals because of their religious
believes.
 Christianity and Judaism both believe that meat is ok
to eat and aren’t a vegetation religion, some people
are still vegetation's because they believe meat
shouldn’t be eaten.
 Islam and Judaism believe that some meats are ok
but others like pork aren’t to be eaten.
