characters evolving to the reader in an intimate way. She reveals within her novel
the high cost of claiming to be gay or lesbian within America. Instead of reading the
author s recollection of her experiences, her graphic novel connects the reader within
the experience as the observer. This allows the reader to look at both the personality
of the novelist and the developmental impacts that have shaped her. Fun Home, is a
distinctively persuasive novel that is entangled within the lives of Alison s family.
While presenting to the reader the explanations of Bruce s death, Alison endeavors to
adjust to the reality of her father s death by remembering family life at the Fun House.
Alison introduces the mourning of her father to the readers as the central event of
the story in the first chapter. She proclaims her father s demise by saying; His
death was quite possibly his consummate artifice, his masterstroke. In essence she
is broadcasting Bruce Bechdel death as a clever move, while trying to acclimate to
the reality of her father s death. Her lack of emotions shows she has not adapted to
reality, the comic strip illustrates her dead stair looking away from her father s

The story in the novel The Goldfinch, written by Donna Tartt, begins even before
Tartt s writing begins. Upon opening the novel, the first sentence present is a quote

beginning this novel, the meaning of this quote shines through; the peculiar things
that happen in life are what bring people together, a fate is not necessarily a

INTRODUCTION
I selected to watch Pollan s series documentary instead of his book due to my
difficulties in reading and being a visual learner. I am grateful to Pollen for being
able to see his story as the documentary. This allowed a visual and hearing
experience with the professionals he spoke with within their environment along with
demonstrations of what they were talking about. It was an experience to join the
people from the countries he visited in their homes/work and to learn what he was
taught. This video brings more meaning and life into his story than just words on a
page.

eventually businesses of a certain size would also have to offer insurance options

somehow less than human, and therefore could not love their families in the same

just how determined white slave owners were to make their constructed stereotypes
realities, and expose justifications for slaveryas just that justifications. Former slaves
like Frederick Douglass, Mary Prince, Venture Smith, James Mars, and William
Grimes shared their stories not only to aid in the fight to end slavery, but all of the
harmful stereotypes about people of African descent that had developed along with
the institution of slavery. Black slaves lived in a world of constructed stereotypes. In
order to dehumanize them, white people asserted that they were inferior of mind,
sexually promiscuous, unable to be virtuous, and dangerous closer to animal than
